I don’t always listen to The Cult, but when I do, so do my neighbors!
Lol 😆
Facts!
Touche'
beautifully put
I'm stealing that, lol!
Its a crime the The Cult arent more recognized. This album is particular is on fire from the first to last song.
The Cult arguably acieved the mythical perfect Three Album Run with Love, Electric and Sonic Temple.
@@BrianDonnelly68100% but the album The Cult is fantastic too!! You can’t leave that out. Have you heard the Manor Sessions? Was recorded between Electric & Sonic Temple
I played this CD to death back in the day. The Cult are so underrated outside of Canada it's criminal. They, The Hip, and Tea Party all made up a large part of my 90's listening.
@@DarkenSeyreth Now - the Tea Party needs reviewing here -amazing voice
@@DarkenSeyreth You seem to think they're Canadians.
The Cult is criminally underrated.
Not by the fans they're not.
This is a song, that I'm convinced, can not be played loudly enough.
Have always said that about Love, too..to this day havent gotten that one loud enough. And I've tried.
100% agree!
Pardon?
F yes
This one and Sweet Soul Sister
and American Horse
and Edie
oh hell the entire Sonic Temple album
oh and She Sells Sanctuary....
Anyone else screaming "Just let it get to the chorus!!!" 😆
Yes!!!!! That's where the song really cranks up
Absolutely the worst place to cut.
😂
Totally, each time I think it will get there but she stops it short each and every time!
She was killing me with the stops.
“She Sells Sanctuary” is a good next listen.
seconded, my favorite cult song
I'd suggest "Edie (Ciao Baby)" as next - and THEN "She sells sanctuary"
Along with many more...
Agree, "She Sells Sanctuary" :)
The long version of She Sells Sanctuary has some fun additional vocalizations.
My grandparents stayed at a motel once and the cult were next door. My grandmother said they had "very pretty bikes" they were polishing and were very polite when they were speaking with them and asked if they were the "boys in the cover" of the local entertainment rag they picked up. My grandfather looked like Santa and would draw people in wherever he went, so they met the Cult and said they were nice boys.
Wow , The Cult?
Awesome
Ian Astbury is literally criminally underrated as a vocalist and the band is super tight
Ummm... there is no criminal law about underrating singers so I guess you meant figuratively... lol
But is a great junkie and hasn't sung worth a crap in 15 years.
Ian Astbury's voice is so powerful. next is "Love Removal Machine"!
What about rain?
seconded emphatically on Love Removal
@@BallStAlum96 I forgot about this song. I agree, tis great, along with she sells sanctuary
Love Removal Machine is my all time fav Cult song.
Sweet soul sister
I'm a simple man... I see The Cult, I click. No questions asked. Greatest rock band of all time.
The last concert I saw before the lockdown was The Cult's Sonic Temple 2019 tour. So fucking good.
Setlist from the Seattle show at the Moore Theater:
Sun King
New York City
Automatic Blues
Sweet Soul Sister
American Horse
Soul Asylum
Edie (Ciao Baby)
Fire Woman

American Gothic
Spiritwalker
The Phoenix
She Sells Sanctuary
Encore:
Wild Flower
Rain
Love Removal Machine

The fact that your hubby chose this song tells us all we need to know about who you are! He scored! Happy belated birthday!!! 🎂🎂🎂🎂
Who else wants to hear Elizabeth sing a rock song like this. I bet she would be really good at it.
Yes please!
Absolutely!!
She Sells Sanctuary is one of the few songs that gets better the louder you play it, and I have no idea why.
Yes, yes, and yes. And she needs to react to it, too.
It was a jukebox favourite of mine at university. Also "Rain"! Another one that needs turning up loud is "Waterfront" by Simple Minds. Ah, those were the days...
One of the few?
Every time I hear it, it takes me back to hours and hours of playing Gran Turismo 3 on the PS2
The Cult were such a massively underrated band. Every song they did had this same intensity.
They started as a kind of Cure band, and then somebody gave them some interesting weed.
They were on regular rotation on MTV and radio stations in the 80’s and early 90’s
They're still together and putting out music. 👍🏽
Were they underrated?
Elizabeth just felt what we all felt the first time we heard it 35 years ago.
Nah.. she was waaay more civilized upon first listen. I had the volume cranked, running around the room, and screaming along with the chorus! 🤘🏼🎸
The Cult is an absolutely amazing band. Criminally underrated!
YESSSSS!!!! At last it's happening!!! I think Fire Woman is a song that will absolutely speak to Elizabeth's soul! Can't wait to hear her reaction!
I feel that way too!!
I mean, Kirk picked this song for my birthday, so I think he agrees with you too!
@@TheCharismaticVoice "Twisting like a flame in a slow dance, baby"....definitely sounds like your kind vibes! 😊

@@TheCharismaticVoice Happy birthday (early or late, but happy nonetheless!) 😊
"She sell sanctuary" absolute classic ... you'll love it!
YES!
Extended version of She Sells
Been on my playlist for years ABSOLUTE BANGER
"Sweet Soul Sister" is also so good. Love this band. Very underrated, especially the guitar.
So cool to see you reacting to The Cult! One of the great (but oft overlooked) Rock bands of all-time from England. They used to be the Southern Death Cult, in a previous early line-up. Anyway, please don't forget to look at Thin Lizzy and UFO, among other GREAT Rock bands of years gone by. 😎
The Cult: Electric - One of the few albums I own that plays start to finish. Top notch Rock & Roll!
I had that poster on my bedroom wall as a teenager. 🙌
Soooo true...
And Love is a bit better to me !!
YES!
The Cult Love is the best album, in my opinion - for the best drum fills EVER!!! And the songs, too. ;-)
+1
The Cult's transformation from their early alternative sound into the coolest version of The Doors possible is still stunning. Its such a 180. I still contend "American Horse" is a top 5 song in the late 80s rock era.
Yeah, man. That song is a banger.
Glad I'm not the only one who recognised that particular song as the standout on that album
This is The Cult at their peak. The voice, the moves, the groove along with that driving sound. Wow!
this is one of the best songs ever picked on this channel...
This group has a history of being unnoticed. I saw The Cult in Brisbane...sometime in the late 90s. They're still in my playlist...& will always be there.
kinda got lost in the glam craze at the time
super underrated.
Yep, a band that should have been HUGE but just never was. Still... I crank them up every chance I get.
@@sandman_says_runrunner4701 Hardly. These guys were massive in the 80s. Music of my youth. Love, Electric and Sonic Temple were huge records.
@@RobertSmith-js2kz Don't get me wrong, I love The Cult... but "massive" they were not. They were almost niche, when they should have been Guns N' Roses, Metallica, U2 huge (U2 sucks but in term of exposure and mass awareness...).
I'm Canadian. I've never seen them live, but this, she sells sanctuary and love removal machine are still in my playlist
SHE SELLS SANCTUARY!!! ...one of my favourite songs ever recorded!
Yes
"This is the charismatic voice and here is another legendary band I never heard before "
Saw them back in the day. I've seen thousands of bands, but their performance stuck with me as one of the best..period! They absolutely rocked and the energy was amazing. Pure rock & roll !
The singer is Ian Astbury and he's an amazing frontman, but never seems to be in the discussion about the greatest frontmen of all time. In my opinion, he's right up there with the likes of Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler and Axl Rose to name just a few. He's a true entertainer and Billy Duffy absolutely slays the guitar.
Also, The Cult are one of the most underrated bands of the '80s and "Sonic Temple" has to be one of the top ten rock albums from the '80s.
I'm super looking forward to hearing more of their stuff! My hubby said one of the most iconic rock songs ever comes from them, but I've never heard it before.
@@TheCharismaticVoiceYour husband is right and you won't regret hearing more from them. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if they became one of your favorite bands to react to on here, that's how great they're!
They are a great band with a great singer. As you get further into them, I think you’ll find a number of great songs off their Love album.
@@TheCharismaticVoice They have one of the best hard rock album trifectas (string of 3 great releases on a row) out there: Love, Electric, then Sonic Temple. Really cool evolution from Goth Rock to Arena Rock.
Truly one of the most underrated rock bands.
She Sells Sanctuary is killer!!!
Rain is my all-time favorite! I love the Cult. Criminally underrated. A very unique mix of classic rock and New Wave. Love them
Rain.. was our Anthem
There is no finer work of art than “ Rain”
She sells sanctuary!! An amazing rock’n dance song from the 80’s!
Yes you are DEFINITELY a FIRE WOMAN ❤
"Edie, Ciao Baby", a song about Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol's muse, is awesome! The woman that inspired the song "Firewoman" to Ian Astbury, is featured in the video, portraying Edie Sedgwick. They were an item for awhile. Also, I LOVE the song "Wildflower" for a rockin' song with a great beat. I love all of their music!
I was hoping someone would mention Edie, I love that song.
I saw them live a few years back and they were great live! I recommend "Edie" it's beautiful. A favorite of mine.
Happy birthday btw 🎉
I love that song, one of my favorit Cult songs. ❤
Best song
Ciao baby
One of my ALL TIME favorites!! I used to drive around in my Ford Escort with a portable CD player (the kind where you put the fake cassette into) listening to this song on repeat 😂 🎵🎸❤️🔥
Lady, you are indeed a Fire Woman! I think I speak for many when I say we would love to hear you belt out one of these classic tunes.
Whan Ian was a kid his dad was in the RAF and was posted to an American airbase in the US. Ian attended a US school and was bullied by some of the students as he was the outsider. The kids from the First Nations community did not bully him and he struck up friendships with them. This gave him an appreciation and interest in their culture which can be seen in the way he styled himself, heard in the music and indeed seen in some of the dance moves!
Oh, I love this fact.
It wasn't the USA, he moved with his family to Hamilton, Ontario Canada when he was 11. The native influence is correct however..
@@steveedwards9451 that is true. I live just aside and was sooo proud about this when I was young... he was like my cosmic older brother...
I always wondered about his look, super cool
@steveedwards9451 thanks for that. I stand corrected.
Loved The Cult since the first time I heard them ("She Sells Sanctuary"). And I had the pleasure of experiencing Ian Astbury as the singer for a remergence of half of The Doors.
That and Edie (ciao baby) are great songs
Prefer that one as a vocalist intro. She sells Sanctuary...
But I'm sure our hosts would love a deep dive into the whole OTT Gothic period.. Sisters of Mercy and The Mission, Bauhaus etc as most of the present Heavy rock and opera/classic orchestra backed rock bands roots can be found there. 🧙🏼♂️🇬🇧🌌
Besides she will love the Dark Cos play style and Ethnic mixing like with Offra Hazia in Temple of love ..
Happy birthday Elizabeth 🎂 🎉 🎈 🧙🏼♂️🌌
I saw that as well. It was at the now defunct Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Ian’s physical resemblance to Jim Morrison, not just his vocal resemblance, was down right frightening.
After hearing the name of the song for weeks (it was like, #1 dance track in the UK) I finally caught the video on MTV, and was blown away. (If she likes his dance moves, wait until she sees his stomp/kick at the beginning of that video!) They've been my band ever since. I have a ridiculous collection of import 12" vinyl singles and CD's, picture discs, etc.
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Sisters of Mercy yessssss
One of my favourite 1989 albums...
Had the pleasure of getting a limo ride to their show in the early 90’s with Ian because the driver got lost and didn’t know where the venue was. Great show and Ian was amazing.
"Sweet Soul Sister" is another great song by The Cult... Possibly my favorite...
The Cult is legendary. One of the best rock bands of all time.
Sweet Soul Sister is my go-to when I need a good, loud listen. But with the Cult, there is no wrong answer.
The Cult is a whole experience. They should have been ten times bigger than they were. Sweet Soul Sister and Lil' Devil would be other good ones to listen too.
Guns and Roses gets credit for bringing rock music out of the doldrums of the hair metal days but what folks don't realize is that it was actually The Cult. The Cult paved the road for GnR. In fact, when GnR broke big, they were opening for The Cult on tour. When GnR lost their drummer, they reached out and took in The Cult's drummer. The Cult brought the "Rock" back into Rock and Roll.........
Matt Sorum, drums are on top here!
@@ppowerman5000Mike Curry. Sorum came later.
@@rbilleaud Curry played on the album, Sorum was the tour drummer and in all the videos for Sonic Temple, including this one.
@@vondoom6183 True, and he is in the video, but since the audio is from the album, which is why I commented. I just think Curry doesn't get the recognition he's due for his work in the studio on both Ceremony and Sonic Temple.
Saw this tour in Houston! Was right before GnR broke big, we thought they sucked, lol, so we went out on the concourse and waited for The Cult! I stand by my initial assessment 😂
I’ve always been amazed with The Cult being one of the greatest Americana Rock groups, whilst hailing from Northern England.
Not their first two albums
I love Astbury's previous band being called Southern Death Cult. Weren't even from South Yorkshire.
@@RobertSmith-js2kz While Dreamtime and Love have a bit of that Brit Goth undertone, lyrically and structurally they’re still quite Americana.
@@mckinnonkatz24 You are correct- I have owned every album since late 80s, seen them live, met Ian, and continue to love them. Dreamtime even has Native American images on the cover, and "Spiritwalker," one of my favorite songs of theirs, clearly from Native American philosophy. I even have Southern Death Cult album has a song "Apache" and references to desert flowers. I was convinced they were from the USA southwest for the first few years, I think.
@@jas137 Somebody from the actual US Southwest would've probably not disregarded actual individual Native Americans the way they did with the cover and videos from Ceremony. The Ceremony cover pic was used without the parents' or child's consent, and the burning of the child's image in the band's promotional videos had heavily negative religious connotations to that family. There was a lawsuit. The legal settlement seems to have had an NDA that prevents the band and the child's parents from discussing the outcome. Because of that, nobody knows whether the situation was remedied to the family's satisfaction.
"I dove into some sort of magical pool, and I'm going somewhere I totally did not expect," perfect summary of The Cult.
The chorus of this is just 💥🤌🏻. It soars. I absolutely love listening to it in the car.
INXS “Need You Tonight”

INXS is amazing, so many great songs, I'd love to hear my favorite "The One Thing" done on this channel!!!

It's been decades since I've listened to this song. I forgot how great the arrangement and parts are. Beautiful!
Great Band, Ian is one of my fav singers of all time and to see Elizabeths beautiful smile makes a good day, she has a glow about her
These guys have written some of the most awesome rock songs ever. Everything between "Love" and "Ceremony" is pure gold
Dreamtime is an incredible album too, my favourite, a different sound completely.
I think I agree with this assessment, although Beyond Good & Evil is the album that should have come after Ceremony, and is of equal quality.
Blues + Aggression = Rock & Roll 😎
Yes, this, 1000 times!
As Muddy Waters once said "The blues had a baby and they called it Rock 'n'Roll".
The Cult!... Saw them in Spokane several months ago. My No.1 go-to band...love Ian & Billy. You've got to dive into their catalog of great songs.
YES! YOU ARE A "FIRE WOMAN", I've known a few in my life, and you definitely deserve the title!
Heard this almost every night bartending in clubs back in the day. Never got tired of it.
The most underrated/under appreciated bands from the 80’s. Ian is one of the most charismatic frontmen ever. I’m so glad you finally got to them!
Aaaaaand He sang for the Doors for a bit for live show tours!!Did a Great job filling in for Jim.
There was a joke in Canada that Jeff Martin of the Tea Party should have taken that gig since he looks and sounds so much like Jim Morrison already. Apparently Martin hated the comparison.
I saw him in 2002ish when he was singing for The Doors. Stewart Copeland was on drums.
They recorded a couple of the songs together for the tribute compilation around the same time
I was at the concert in Pittsburgh. It was more than a concert it was more like a celebration of Jim Morrisons life. It was awesome.
Saw them in Minneapolis about 10 years ago. Ian's mike went out. Didn't phase him. He just sang louder and you could still hear him over the band clear as day. Amazing.
The Cult... amazing band from an amazing era.

Love The Cult, i remember when they were Southern Death Cult. Soooo looking forward to this 🎵🤘🎵
I saw Southern Death Cult supporting Bauhaus; those were the days!
@@stevenporter8740 That bill right there sums up the musical journey The Cult took over the years. Trippy, gothy to start, to Love's swirling, pulsing, dynamic rock, then Rick Rubin turns them into a modern AC/DC for Electric, to this big arena rock flash and strut. I liked them all. Still do.
Love the song Moya.
Brothers Grimm is one of my favorite Death Cult songs.
She Sells Sanctuary is a must!!!! Loving it 😁😁😁
I am SO HAPPY to see a video for The Cult. One of my all time favorites, and this song always makes my day better. Ian's voice has always fascinated me. I checked The Cult off my bucket list a few years ago. Front row, a few feet away from Billy and his amazing guitar skills. My heart exploded when i heard the first notes of this song ring out.. 32 years of wishing i'd seen them when they came through here and i was a too young teen...talk about fulfilling a dream! Ian sounded amazing, his energy was just as good as it is in this video. Happy birthday! Listen to some more Cult... Li'l Devil is one of my favorites, Sweet Soul Sister is great too.
His voice is still the same! Its timeless
Saw the cult a few years ago and Ian threw his tambourine up really high to catch it, but lost it in the lights, it hit him in the face and put a big gash in his face, just kept on rocking with blood pouring all over. So freaking rock!
Saw him Seattle 5 years ago and thought he didn't bust himself in the face but he absolutely wore out and destroyed about 6 tambourines through the show. It was hilarious he just got another one and kept on going.
I love this story. THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
Rain is my favorite.
Love that song. An old friend of mine's elderly father came into his room one time and said "Ok, so who's Lorraine ?" 😂 He thought the song was called Lorraine 🤣👍 So I automatically think Lorraine. Lol

Always one of my favorite songs by The Cult -- first heard it in college, and Ian Astbury's voice blew my mind.
"I am the Lizard King. I can do anything."
He oozes Morrison in a few ways, but his voice is a bit higher. I am a big fan, but not claiming he's a ripoff.
Saw them live 20 years after this release, Ian's voice was impeccable, so good live
Have not heard this in ages. Elizabeth's thumbnail looks as though she's trying summon fire.

I've seen them many times . Ian is always on...still the energy and power...absolute
Most under-appreciated band of their era. Astbury was one of the best frontmen in rock.
"She Sells Sanctuary" or "Wild Flower" next.
Ian is one of the most underrated vocalists in rock....and he had awesome hair. \m/
As everyone else has said in the comments, The Cult is definitely underrated. Got to see them live during the Electric ('87) and Sonic Temple ('89) tours and they where incredible. Ian's vocals and charisma on stage is legend and combined with Billy's guitar, the result is astounding.
It's no wonder that when the Doors reformed in 2002, Doors of the 21st Century, they had Ian as their frontman. Oh and by the way, yes he is that animated on stage... or at least he was back in the day in his prime during their live shows.
I WANT TO SEE YOU ON STAGE SOON!!!///"Love you soo much about your " perfect ears"...❤
She sells sanctuary is iconic and gives me the colly wobbles every time I hear it
Whole album is solid. Giant guitar sound.
Hell yeah, Billy Duffy really don't get the recognition that he should!!! He's one of those guys when you hear his tone, you instantly know it's him!
I agree, this one is my all time fav ❤❤❤
Sonic Temple is a great album. It was produced by Bob Rock who also produced Metallica's black album. I got to see The Cult open for Metallica on City Island, Harrisburg, PA in 1989. Yeah I'm an old 😂 headbanger. It was a great show. Metallica was so loud, so many people complained in Harrisburg, it was the last show there. And City Island is in the middle of the Susquehanna River, it's many blocks away from where people live. 😂
My ears rang for 3 days after that show. I regret nothing. 😎🤘 I still go see metal & hard rock shows as often as I can. My older son and his gf are my headbanging side kicks. 😊
Just to be clear, all ten songs on the album are solid. The first 5 are 🔥!

Fell in love with The Cult in 85. Album Love is in my top 10 of all time. Beautiful production. Billy Duffy is one of my favourite guitar players. He delivers live, always. So cool. Unfortunately Ian hasn’t always. Maybe he saved it for The Doors of the 21st century. Man that was a brilliant performance. Saw The Cult 6 or 7 times live. The songs are so great. Resurrection Joe, Love Removal Machine, Edie, Love Trooper and of course Spiritwalker etcetera etcetera.

It's literally impossible that she never heard this before.
Don’t beat Elizabeth up because she chose Fire Woman. She’ll be hooked and will get to the rest eventually.
Thank you to put a little sens into me... I was like outraged about this song's choice for Ian's voice...
This is an amazing song and their biggest hit - the weird lack of acceptance of the Cult’s later catalog is crazy. The musicianship on Sonic Temple is MILES ahead of Electric and light years ahead of ‘Love’. Thats just a fact
@@jimilemons7680 Not for me. Sonic Temple marks the '' Comin' to America Era '' with Bob Rock and the big guitars.
What we love, us ol' grinches, is the pop/goth English sounds of the post punk era. The flangers on guitars, drum machines and steady bass lines
..
I went to the show of the Sonic Temple Tour in '89 and Ian was pure Magik !! It was cool... but The Cult when they were playin' Spirit Walker was VERY cool.
Why would we? It is one of my favorite songs by The Cult. The Love album (like, all of it) is the best but Fire Woman is prime shit.
I believe it was her husband that selected the song .
Just saw The Cult a few months ago for the first time since I last saw them in '92. They still kick ass, and Ian's voice is still fantastic. Money well spent!
Loved the Cult for 40 years. Great band!
I was in love with Ian(and his hair) back when this came out. I was 15. "Lord have mercy"
