  • I have heard a lot of noise about Glenn Danzig for a few years now, and how I absolutely have to check out his voice. Well, the time has come, and I was pleasantly surprised! The mix of clean and harsh vocals throughout, with his intense aggression made for quite an interesting experience!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Danzig for the first time, performing "Mother”.

Glenn Danzig modeled his vocal style after 3 of his heroes: Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, and Roy Orbison. Once you know that, you can hear it everywhere in all of his songs.

I had all their albums in my car one day.
Someone broke into the car, stole everything.
Back then it wasn't easy to get just any album so I had to have everything imported for an insane amount of money.
Less than a week after I got all the albums, I found a lot of them in some discount dump basket in some metal-music shop. For about 1/5th of what I paid for having them imported.

You'll want to do a reaction to "How the Gods Kill" from his Danzig III: How the Gods Kill Album from 1992. Probably the peak of his vocal powers. To be noted that he was the originator of the legendary punk group The Misfits, and experimental goth rock/punk/metal hybrid Samhain prior to forming the more blues metal/hard rock band Danzig. Essentially these bands morphed into one another as his musicianship/songwriting improved as did his choices in bandmates. His vocal technique is rooted in his love for Elvis, The Doors, Roy Orbison, Albert King, the delta blues, not just the artist Howlin' Wolf, and all the sell your soul folklore and voodoo the blues carries, but the actual howls of wolves. Put that in a pot with Black Sabbath and you got Danzig. Of interest to newcomers such as yourself is that Danzig has composed 2 original classical instrumental albums (Black Aria I and II), released an album of Elvis covers, and wrote a song each for both Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash that were up there with their best work. But back to the point - How the Gods Kill or Devil's Plaything from 1990's "Lucifuge." You will not be disappointed.

it's such genius songwriting, how he sings soothingly to the mother but keeps this deep wickedness in his tone to where WE know his motives aren't pure but the mom thinks it's a genuine warning. Then he gets much more aggressive, direct and confrontational with the father, even taunting him and challenging him. Playing on each parent's fears and worries at the same time but in the most effective way per parent.

At the same time though Danzig is known to have satanic tones and the terms "Mother and Father" is routed in biblical statements. People usually pray to the "Mother of the Holy Spirit" in Catholicism and the Father is in reference to God himself. The song can be seen as a song about a man telling off parents or it can be seen as "I'm evil incarnate and I'm telling you bluntly I'm not going to bow down and I'm going to show your daughter my evil tonight." As far as the meaning/backstory of the song. In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children. As a result, the record industry agreed to place warning stickers on albums with explicit content.
"I wrote 'Mother' about he PMRC and parents who tell their kids what to listen to. Parents should guide their children, not live their lives for them. Kids should discover life on their own."

Nerd note, this song was written in response to Tipper Gore and the music councils Parental Advisory Stickers forced onto albums back in the day;)

Prior to this band, Glenn Danzig was a founding member of the horror punk band The Misfits from 1977-1983 (surely you’ve seen people wearing T-shirt’s with the giant Misfits skull on them). After that, he started the horror punk/gothic rock band Samhain from 1983/84-1986. In 1986/87, hoping to take the band in a rock/metal direction, Samhain’s guitarist was changed and then the drummer as well. Around the same time, Glenn Danzig changed the band’s name to Danzig, so that regardless of any future personal changes, there would be the appearance of continuity.

The first fan they show in the video was someone who clearly painted their face and rocked the Misfits hairstyle (I'd argue Glen's is still pretty close to it, even if he grew out the rest) -- kind of curious about why that was included considering how bad the break-up of the band was...

In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children.

There are videos of the obscenity hearing featuring the Gores. Musicians from many genres testified against the PMRC including Dee Snider (from Twisted Sister), Frank Zappa, and John Denver. All of them outclassed and destroyed the stuffy politicians arguments including John Denver (Who was running late for a meeting with NASA).

The tones and energy he builds in his delivery is really fitting for the lyrics of this song. It's as if he starts with a conversation with parents that builds to a challenge, an argument.

My first boyfriend introduced me to Danzig back in 1993. Being more of a jazz/blues girl, I wasn't a fan of many of the bands he was into, but "Mother" quickly became one of my favorites, so I was amazed how you pointed out that his voice is sort of jazzy/smokey. Maybe that's why I really liked this song.

Check out his first band The Misfits (late 70’s early 80’s) then Samhain (early to mid 80’s). Glenn is hands down one the greatest vocalist. He’s 68 years old now and still is a vocal beast.

Holy crap...I've been suggesting this for two years! I'm a bit too young to have seen the original Misfits back in the day (they were a hugely influential horror punk band), but I caught Glenn and the boys opening for Slayer in Cleveland on their first tour in '88. I'm so stoked for this....

I bought the Bullet single in the summer of '78. There was nothing like it at all. It was instantly liikeable. The lyrics were mind blowing. When I introduced the song to a college friend in the fall of '79, it blew his mind so much, for the next week he would just wander around in a daze, sayinng, "Suck Suck Jackie Suck"... his mind was completely blown.

@@stevetremblay961I saw them a few years back when they reunited with Glenn, it was awesome. Doyle still looks like he could beat someone senseless...the '86 self-titled release is a sort of a twenty, best of, hits compilation and covers a lot of the high points of Glenn's time in The Misfits. His band Samhain was really a migration from The Misfits into Danzig and had a revolving door policy with members until Chuck Biscuits finally joined Glenn, John Christ, and Eerie Von and changed the bands name. Cool shit...

This is just one of those songs that hits so hard... I'm thinking about covering this in my 90's grunge/punk band. We don't do many covers but the energy on this just undeniable. The way my voice is it lends itself to the Danzig/pearljam deeper base pitch with a clean note carry release... not sure that's the right word for it as I've never took voice lessons, but I'm sure you can get my point

Her Black Wings, Devils Plaything, Long Way Back from Hell. Another amazing track from his third album would be well worth doing, How The Gods Kill is a fantastic song that really showcases his vocals. So good.

Glenn is quite a diverse artist…as mentioned before with the Misfits and Samhain, but his solo “Aria” album will catch you off guard. He’s quite the writer as well…contributing songs to Johnny Cash’s comeback album and even doing some work with movie soundtracks too. I’ve enjoyed his music since I was a teenager. Vocalists like him aren’t too common nowadays

I love when she pauses a song just before something's about to change, and then makes note of the thing that's about to change. In this case it was when she was saying she liked the jazzy sound of Glenn's voice right before the second verse when he cranks it up a notch.

Been a Danzig fan all of my life. As a few others have stated you need to listen to ...How The Gods Kill and Blood and Tears for his vocal range. Glenn is a huge Elvis fan and he def used Elvis as inspiration in his delivery. Glenn has a very powerful voice and is one of my Favorite Metal and Punk singers. His early ion life Punk Band The Misfits is one of the most popular Punk Bands of all time. He was a teenager at the time and wrote most all the material. The Song Skulls would be a good place to start with the Misfits.
