I first heard The Cult in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec. "She Sells Sanctuary" came on the radio and i had to stop playing and look up what this magnificent sound was.
The studio version brings out the melody a lot more even though this was a nice live version. I think this is a great great hard rock song. To me this this is their best song. Peace dog is great to. Great riff. The Phoenix and she sells sanctuary and wild flower are good too.
Saw them in 1986 when they were a goth band. Here they stepped into hard rock to try entering into the US market. Later on they came back to goth. One of the greatest bands of the 80s.
Wow this is from "the old grey whistle test". Used to be a great show. Only live performances allowed. No videos or miming. They were one of the best live bands I've seen. And since live bands used to be my job, I've seen an awful lot. They did start out as a post punk sort of new wave ish outfit. Southern death cult. But they evolved into a hard rock band. Try fire woman, wild hearted son, sweet soul sister, edie (ciao baby) for a ballad. Which was about edie Sedgwick, a protege of Andy Warhol who died of a heroin overdose. As for being basic and simple. That's all that's required as long as it's good isnt it? 😊 He was also the sexiest man alive at that time. Watch the videos you'll see why. 😊
They always remind me of a young, vibrant Rolling Stones. A lot of their riffage is very Stones-ish. Although at the guitar breakdown I think they must have heard UFO's Prince Kajuku.
I loved The Cult. The vocalist has a great voice. Big and commanding. My favorite The Cult song is Sweet Soul Sister. But I love this track also. The fidelity of this version has a lot to be desired. Still👍
Ed, you will like the entire "Sonic Temple" album. I see people suggesting "She Sells Sanctuary" - but you won't like that one. It falls more on the New Wave side. "Sonic Temple" is a straight banger all the way through the album.
In my experience, the Cult was popular with many different cliques; Motoheads, Jocks, Heshers, Punks, Metelheads, New Wavers, etc. Kind of how they all loved Bowie, but not as well known.
I left the UK in 1982 before The Cult was formed and never heard of them living in Australia. Came back to the UK in 1992 and saw exactly what I missed. SUPERB BAND.
FUN FACT - Ian Astbury toured with The Doors as a replacement for Jim Morrison in the late 90s-early 2000’s... And Rick Rubin produced some of their early work. You should do She Sells Sanctuary- everyone knows the track.
Ed. Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed. These guys were pretty badass from maybe 85 - 89/90. I saw them open for Billy Idol at an arena show and they absolutely blew him off the stage. Can't remember the year other than it was late 80's I think. Several of their albums during this era were like a bridge from the early/mid 80's hard rock to the coming wave of alternative rock that would of course make them less relevant. But for a while, they WERE the alternative, and did really well. A few years after the Billy Idol show, I went and saw them open for Metallica at another arena show in '89. Ian's waistline had grown at an inverse proportion to their former glory, and I felt so bad for these guys lol. Metallica just annihilated them, and I didn't pay them much mind after that, but they've stuck around doing their thing, breaking up and reforming a few times I think. They won't ever recapture their old glory, but for a few years there, they were young rock gods living the dream that so many of us never realized.
I always liked The Cult more than Metallica, I went to see Metallica on the Justice tour and was bored to tears, thank fuck Danzig was supporting, he blew them away.
All hail Sir Billy Duffy, King of the Gretsch White Falcon (although obviously not featured in this TV show performance)!! But I gotta say, I prefer the original studio version off their EXCELLENT "Electric" album, featuring those patented anti-production techniques of that bearded zen guru Rick Rubin!! P.S., hey, Ed, Google their follow-up "Sonic Temple" (album), featuring "Fire Woman" and "Sweet Soul Sister" amongst other tracks, most lovingly produced by Mr. Bob Rock. Kind of a hybrid between their "Love" and "Electric" albums and perfect arena rock for 1989. And one more thing, MACH-IIIIIINE!!!!!
The zepplin shirt guy sounds a lot like me if it wasnt metallica metal church slayer crue and others then it was tossed away and prince was there and rocking so hard wow
After discovering The Cult while playing Grand Theft Auto Vice City several years ago, I now own three of their CD's I have asked myself, where was I in their hay day? A quick story about ignorance, I was 17 in 1976 and as a part time job I worked in a ice cream parlor/ restaurant one of the dish washers was a huge Cream fan he was several years older than most of us and we harassed him because of his taste in music, none of us had ever heard of Cream. No more than three years later I owned the complete Cream album collection, how stupid I felt but it taught me a lesson about closed mindedness at least when it comes to music.
I shunned some great great music and genres but lived long enough to eventually come around and thankfully so music from our time will not be replicated today greta van fleet is close oh yeah this is a poor choice of cult there is better
The Cult can’t be categorized,,, they’re just awesome!
I don't get how an old Led Zep fan would have never heard this song. It's been on rock radio for 40 years.
Amazing but true!
Closed minded . He judged them without ever listening to them .
Each Cult album is a 90° turn and still rockin awesome
Electric is one of my favorite albums of the 80s!
Electric is one of the all time great hard rock albums- not a bad song on it.
Hell yes! Best rock album ever!!
I first heard The Cult in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec. "She Sells Sanctuary" came on the radio and i had to stop playing and look up what this magnificent sound was.
I relate to that. Same for me when I discovered 'Scars on Broadway They say' (System of a down era) when playing a Colin McCrae rally racing game.
The studio version brings out the melody a lot more even though this was a nice live version. I think this is a great great hard rock song. To me this this is their best song. Peace dog is great to. Great riff. The Phoenix and she sells sanctuary and wild flower are good too.

WOW!! HOW the hell do you confuse them with The Cure!!??
Just as easily as one could be mistaken for Marcus Halberstram. You'd have to have been there I guess. Thanks for watching.🤘

Yes, Sweet Soul Sister is a great song! Very underrated; like Soldier Blue, imo.
The Cult Love is a great one and is the album prior to Electric.

Billy's mullet is long, long gone.
In my experience, the Cult was popular with many different cliques; Motoheads, Jocks, Heshers, Punks, Metelheads, New Wavers, etc.

The reason this Cult album sounded so different than their other Goth Rock stuff was because it was produced by Rick Rubin
Yes, one of the great beards in rock and roll.🤘
It’s Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones...the Cult rocks. ❤️
This video was a very subdued Ian Astbury, you need to check out “Fire woman”,
FUN FACT - Ian Astbury toured with The Doors as a replacement for Jim Morrison in the late 90s-early 2000’s...
And Rick Rubin produced some of their early work.
You should do She Sells Sanctuary- everyone knows the track.
This album, Sonic temple is one of the best albums of the 80s. Better than GNR and others in so many ways.
Check out Memphis Hip Shake from the same album!!🔥🔥🔥
Ed.
Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed.

Luv me some white falcon. My hero, malcolm young, would disappear behind his with just his head and feet showing
You have a new subscriber- thanks for doing the Cult!
I’m actually surprised Billy is using a Les Paul rather than his White Falcon.
True. Rock on Canada!🤘
The zepplin shirt guy sounds a lot like me if it wasnt metallica metal church slayer crue and others then it was tossed away and prince was there and rocking so hard wow
Ol' leather lungs, there! 😁
the cult and billy idol would've been great together as a show
After discovering The Cult while playing Grand Theft Auto Vice City several years ago, I now own three of their

I remember Axl Rose wearing a Cult t-shirt in a photo shoot during the Appetite for Destruction era. Guns N Roses knew..
Great song and live band . Billy is so solid
Billy's more alot more than an Angus young
If you wear a Zep shirt, you need The Cult in your life brah
Ian stepped in with Doors for a while .
I love the Cult. Heard fire woman and I was hooked.
Mutt Lange retooled their sound.
Yes, he had a great knack for that. I know Def Leppard thanks him for it.
And thank you for watching.🤘
If you drew an imaginary Rock band, you'd pretty much draw The Cult. Looked great, sounded great. What more do you want exactly?
Not new wave ...Band Post Punk !!
Listen to them more please
Outfuknstanding live version. The Cult at the height of their powers.
No Billy Duffy no Smiths. He introduced Marr to Morrissey.
The Phoenix
Electric is a jem of an album
Catchy as hell and in the pocket, just like a later day AC/DC!🤘
Still together as well uk tour starts November a think brilliant band 👍
Ian ♥️ The Cult ❤️
You have to hear the studio version. It's night and day
Should have played the Studio version . Way better !
Haha not new wave class of 87 here
🤘🤘🤘
you should at least give a listen to The Ally Venable Band covering a Carl Withers tune "UseMe" kicks ass! ua-cam.com/video/V7qfd-x8P-o/v-deo.html
I shunned some great great music and genres but lived long enough to eventually come around and thankfully so music from our time will not be replicated today greta van fleet is close oh yeah this is a poor choice of cult there is better
Try some other cult songs
assessment it bit vague plant pinched stuff from the blues not acdc influenced at all
Oh please, you can hear ACDC throughout several songs, just with a nice rough punk flair. Thanks for watching 🤘
Billy duffy, nothing to write home about?????
