    Thx for the video got wife expy, I have same engine in my f150 and a tip I found was to cut one side off of an old quart bottle of oil. Then use that to make a tray under the filter to catch the oil spilling out (keep lid on) . Works great to avoid a mess from their ridiculous double drain tray which I was hoping was fixed by now

    Phew!!! I'm doing an 'extended test drive' on an overstock 2018 F150 with the 3.5 eco (if I get it, it's at an insanely reduced price) and after watching this, I ran out and checked. This one has been converted back to the aluminum oil pan with a a standard drain plug.

      It is a great truck. We love this engine in our Expedition...except for my plastic drain plug. I have done 3 oil changes now and it is still working as designed...if you are not careful that plastic plug can create the messiest oil change ever...the traditional plug (like what is probably on your test drive truck) would be easier to change. Hope you buy it!

    Great info. as I recently bought a Expedition. Will definitely grab a spare plug prior to doing. Cardboard is an ideal deflection idea, I also use refrigerator size boxes under my vehicles. Not only to catch the mess but also makes it easy to slide on then a creeper and insulated from the concrete floor. Same for brake jobs or what ever. Buy boxes of nitrile gloves for durability on line the correct size and no more dirty grease filled finger nails coming at the wife. :)

      I just bought one to put into my 2020 Mustang GT. Starting in 2021, the Mustang GT's will have metal drain plugs and pans again. The bad news: they will have cylinder deactivation.

    I wonder if there is an aftermarket drain plug that is magnetized to gather any metal shavings from the engine oil in operation.

    I've got a Ford dealer nearby. Got a spare drain plug there for $5 bucks before I changed that I will just keep in the glove compartment. Also on the weight savings plastic plug is necessary for the apparently lighter weight composite oil pan. I assume weight savings strategy is the sum of all the lighter weight components that are substituted everywhere plus aluminum body, not just the single components like oil pan, equal the over all weight reduction for entire vehicle. They forget to tell the passengers to loose weight though.

    Someone should tell these guys that they do not have to lift any tab on the oil plug. It is simply a turn counter clockwise and it comes right out. Trying to lift the tab can damage the lining in the oil pan and make for a very expensive do it yourself oil change. I am the owner of a 2017 F150 with 3.5 liter ecoboost w/10 speed transmission and have changed the oil and not what i am talking aboutr

    • @AdventuringToday
      @AdventuringToday  5 років тому +1

      I tried just turning it. What I have read is people will take out pliers and try to turn it and that is one way they are breaking. Someone also mentioned the new 3.5's (at least on the F150's) are being delivered with steel drain plugs again because these plastic ones have been such an issue. I was very careful with how I encouraged the tab to slid over the stop. I would suggest other people who have the same plug to be very careful which is part of the point I was trying to make with this video. Thank you for your comments. I appreciate it!

    • @forgedsteelwrench9249
      @forgedsteelwrench9249 5 років тому

      😁😂 you can damage the lining in the oil pan......oh thats right because its plastic too right. Ford is soo high up in the technology right now, they just might come up ABS plastic crankshaft and pistons.

  • @Mill72

    I was successful on my first oil change with the oil plug on my ‘17 F-150, but on my second change I broke the tab. Went to the Ford dealer and bought acouple new drain plugs for future if needed. Some say they used pliers and clamped on the middle tab. I don’t see how it will lift up over the pan lip that way. I also use 5-30 Amsoil Signature.

    23:46 I have watch several videos on oil changing a 2018 f150 3.5L, each one the people are commenting about the yellow plug. I get under there and after fight with the screw & clips. I take one plastic cover off only to find no yellow plug after looking for 15 minutes. I take another plastic cover off. Still can’t find a yellow plug, again I looked for 15 minutes. Driving over to a dealership later to find out if they lost my plug when they did the change or I have a metal plug from the factory.

    2018 Ford Expedition: I have a metal drain plug. Simple to do. Level ground oil filter drains out front. On ramps, drains out back, there is a cut (port) in the fabric cover underneath. Plastic drain plugs maybe they don’t use anymore or when my ford dealership did the first oil change they replaced it with the metal one. No idea. Either way i didn’t have a plastic one on mine

    • @U20E27
      @U20E27 4 роки тому +1

      Ok so late 19’s Got the Aluminum pans👍. The location is the same. I left the oil cap and dipstick in, to avoid oil drainage disaster. I cut up a 1 gallon milk jug for a spray shield to keep the oil from going everywhere. Thanks for the warning! Success with no mess.
      Not too difficult I need a taller funnel my shorty doesn’t help that much avoiding spillage during refill.

      @@U20E27 It is absolutely crazy how quickly the oil comes out of these vehicles with the drain plan like mine. I agree with you...Ford recognized a problem here and went back to the tried and true design. No more plastic drain plugs is icing on the cake!

      I have a platinum...I believe Ford was having trouble with these plastic oil drain plugs (and the plastic water separator plugs on the diesel super duty trucks). I understand they are now using metal oil drain plugs on all their 3.5 ecoboost engines...both in the Expedition and the F150.

    • @AdventuringToday
      @AdventuringToday  5 років тому +1

      Thank you for the feedback on the music. Hopefully I have gotten better with experience from this earlier video and experimenting with better equipment. I have done oil changes at 1,463, 4,787 and 6,113 miles. Below are the comments from my most recent oil change in December 2018. On this third oil change all wear metals are running right around universal averages for the engine (although universal averages are tough to go by due to personal Oil change intervals and how the truck are driven...we do lots of short drives in this truck which is tough on oil because it often does not get warmed up to normal operating temp). Here are the comments from Blackstone Labs.... "So far, so good for your new Expedition! This engine is maturing nicely, and it looks like the majority of the
      lingering break-in material has left the system. Iron and copper continued to improve, and silicon dropped into the average range this time. You might see slight improvements next time too, but this engine already looks great, so they'd just be gravy. A trace of fuel dilution turned up, but that amount isn't enough to show or cause any problems. It's likely just from normal use. The TBN is still good at 3.7, so shoot for 8,000 miles on the next oil. Nice!"

      I actually buy it directly from Amsoil. I became a preferred member. I bought a 5 year membership and it works out to just $15 a year. You will probably save at least $15 on your first order because preferred members get nice discounts. Shipping is usually within just a couple days and for a reasonable price. Amsoil does make it pretty easy. I don't get paid anything by them...I just like their products. Thank you.

    I've found that oil changes on Ford vehicles with 4 wheel drive are always messy. The oil always drains all over front end parts and the filter is usually in a not very well thought out place
    GM trucks are easier to change oil on, much better design.
