Trains in Northern Indiana - Amtrak, Norfolk Southern, and South Shore Line

- In July of 2023, I made a stop over in La Porte, Indiana to see one of the first runs of an ALC-42 locomotive on Amtrak's Capitol Limited. While I was there, I filmed several other trains passing by on Norfolk Southern's busy Chicago Line, one of the busiest east-west freight rail routes in the upper Midwest. Included are several NS freight trains, Amtrak, and South Shore Line on its run to Kingsbury, Indiana.

And fun fact: After Cleveland, Ohio both the Lakeshore Limited and capital Limited fallows the same tracks between Cleveland, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois
I’m right in the middle of that route
yes… we know. no other route it could possibly take and remain efficient
If I correctly recall the horn signals of a train approaching a flat crossing, they consist of two long blasts, one short blast, and one long blast. However, I've lately heard all manner of signals. Near where I live, there is a Norfolk Southern line extending from the inner city marshaling yard to a quarry about twenty miles north of the marshaling yard. The line is only used at night-a couple of runs between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM.
When the train approaches a nearby, single, flat-level crossing, I hear all manner of horn signals, maybe a few double taps, a couple of long taps, or up to thirteen short taps. The signals make no sense. When the same train approaches a nearby road intersection where the tracks cross two intersecting roads, the horn signals are again completely random-maybe four or five taps of varying lengths, several double taps, or intermixed short and long taps but no distinctive pattern.
Are train horn signals now left completely up to the engineer?
Used to go to school in that area, I went to college at Valparaiso University Indiana. It was great to listen to the trains and go to see them.
This was a awesome video mike! Thanks for making these!
idk why but i happen to find this so relaxing
🎉😮😊😅❤

I love that Nathan P5 horn from 7:04.5 to 7:30! Great doppler effect!
Fantastic compilation video of this area. Enjoyed watching and have a wonderful upcoming weekend.(Steve)
Thx for visiting my state, I'm glad you got some great footage. The area you were up by seemed to be relatively close to Michigan City, Indiana which fun fact is the home of TM Books&Videos where the iconic I love Toy Trains Parts 1-12 were filmed, and Tom McComas passed the reigns over to his son Jeff McComas
I'm also in this area too
Awesome video😍😍❤❤
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa it's awesome
Thank you Mike Armstrong. What a joy, especially to listen to! I miss those sounds. Wish Amtrak would donate a model train with train whistles, bells, track sounds at Fernwood Botanical Gardens Railroad Garden , Niles MI. We do have an artist made rendition of the 1800's Amtrak train depot... AND for train enthusiasts: we're not far from LaPorte IN and encourage everyone to come see the beautiful original Amtrak Depot in Niles AND The Railroad Garden at Fernwood. 😉
Nice video man!
Great shots! Have a good weekend 👍
Wow this is new some brand new coaches for the Amtrak service that’s awesome I found the coaches at 6:11
I believe the SouthShore Freight line is the former Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon) RR Michigan City line.
So cool
Awesome video
Absolutely a great video Mike, love these freight trains especially tanker trains since I am a fan of them
In fact, it has my favorite K5LLA horn on a dash 9
And you were there at the right time too because as of recently, most crossings through La Porte are Quiet Zones.
Hello Mike, fantastic video.🎥👍👍👍💗 Have a nice weekend and best wishes.

Incredible video Mike! So cool to see this busy action on the Chicago line, including the south shore short line which I am very familiar with as I’ve seen it in Chicago before.
Indiana needs more transit besides amtrak and south shore line. PS great video as always!

Great video
Wow I had no idea trains were that busy because I have no idea how train life is like how does it feel to be a driver of a train of either passenger or freight and the drivers of these locomotives they are really busy this channel just got more entertaining much more entertaining
sweet one dude!
On my trip to Indiana, i got to go on a south shorelines passenger train and it was pretty fun. But on the way we got to see a south shorelines freight train carrying a bunch of tank cars!
The freight train was also all orange
Even though there wasn't one while you were recording, Canadian Pacific also has trackage rights on this Norfolk Southern Chicago Line, but they turn Northeast into Michigan.
I... remember you, still going strong like the early to mid 2010s
Great Videos
8:31 Nice NF 2PC 1L K5HL on that ES40! It sucks that those old 2000s K5HLs are getting rare as more GEVOs get RL ones.
It’s surprising that Amtrak is now making the P42s trail behind the ALCs
Cool
1:31 cool K5LLA
U gotta do some more rail runner vids. also what if coaster got a MP36PH?
Hello Mike! Did you make it to the NY Central museum in Elkhart?
Anyone noticed that Mike is nearly at a million subs?
And a million videos?
Is Caltrain required to disable their EMD F40s when they are retired and the EMUs launch into service?
YES AMTRAK CAPITAL LIMITED GANG HERE
Hey Mike are there any other grant funds for railroads to require older locomotives to be inoperable when they are replaced with new tier 4 locomotives or is it just the Carl Moyer grant funds? Because I recently heard that the Trinity railway express in Texas is getting new Charger locomotives in the next few years as replacements to their F59s
Lets just take about the Wallscreen the video About a Train Hitting A UP TRAIN
What about South Shore line but Passenger, theirs been ALOT of changes in Street running section?
1:30 K5LLA on GEVO
3:51 UP 8226 jumpscare.
Some beautiful trains in America but british are good 2
🆒🆒
9:06 PRIME 😮😮😮
It isn’t what you think it is
Why do a lot of American train trailers have grfeety on them in my country britan we bairly have grfeety on are trailers
🤷🏻♂️
I don't like American commuter and passenger trains as the all have that same ugly metal look
