Creating a 3d open world on Psx hardware before gta 3, was really ambitious. This and Driver was mind blowing to see, back In the day. It's flawed and really janky, but It's still one heck a technical feat.

If this game had more development time, it could have been another Goldeneye. Im not even sure if PS1 was designed for 3D Open World games but Props to Probe for this technical feat.

It's 2023 and I didn't know about this version. I thought it was the same as PC, a 2D scroll game. I was shocked about this 3D world with those graphics and I really enjoyed this gameplay. PSX was one hell of a console in some ways and developers did a great job on PSX and PS2 for ages.
Never stop to admire ps1 games. It destroys most of modern mobile games by world detaling, animations, physics, original plot delivery. You feel full efficiency of gaming experience.
*Man... When you talk about "open world" in games, people already think of GTA. But very few know about this open-world BATMAN game. Even though it is based on a crude movie, the game is still very good. I had the pleasure of playing as a kid, I enjoyed playing with Batgirl (In this game, you can play with the three protagonists of the film: Batman, Robin and Batgirl). Good times.*
This game made me a huge fan of Frosty, who was Mr. Freeze's sidekick in this game. You can see him at the 32:53 mark. Sure, he might have been a Captain Cold rip-off, but it was such an intriguing character. I used to have his action figure (somehow I lost it in a move) and he was called "Frostbite". For Halloween 1998 my Mom made a homemade costume for him. In the movie, he was the guy always saying "Uh, yeah boss..." but in the game, they made Frosty more important than Mr. Freeze because of how many times you fought Frosty. His backstory was interesting too. He was a professional hockey player that had a failed career by the time he reached the big leagues, not scoring goals much and getting too many times into the penalty box. Before his hockey days, he was known for committing petty theft crimes. After failing his professional career being a laughing stock, he became a "murderer in cold blood" with a "bad mask", as his wanted poster clue in the game said & other clue descriptions of them. Loved to kill people to rob them, and pull off big heists. Besides his wanted poster, there's one series of clues where you put together pieces of surveillance camera reveals a photo of him standing at Snowy Cones, a picture of him and Freeze together, as well pieces to modem where Frosty tried to research a computer store's opening hours. The modem still had in its cache an audio recording of the "Ram World" computer store of its opening hours. Some of the clues are also hand-written messages to Freeze written very neatly in blue ink (showing his orderliness), while Freeze's messages to Frosty are written in sloppy black ink. So in a sense, Frosty was a money-driven killer with a hockey gimmick, trying to restore his public "fame" but in a bad way. So with that, it was only natural for Mr. Freeze to hire him as his sidekick, which Frosty sought fame, power, and cash. In the movie Frosty's actor was Joe Sabatino, and because Frosty isn't given a real name in any of the clues (at least in my multiple playthroughs), I consider Joe Sabatino to be Frosty's name, hehe.
I know everyone hated the movie, but I loved the comedy tone, it felt like Batman finally embraced who he was and got a bit chill about it, also it felt like the Burton saga finale.
I see what you mean. Batman having some comedy to him I've always enjoyed. I don't think the character needs to be so serious all the time. Him being laid back shows his experience. Wish Batman fans saw it more like you do.

Yea I'm 26 and just found out about this game on Wiki. It's very impressive even with all its setbacks. I don't even think PS1 was designed for this type of processing. I'm hoping when GTA6 drops in 2025, it will match this type of impressive technical measurement on limited hardware. Imagine how giant that world is gonna be. Big Batman fan as a kid the fact you could drive his car around in these days was amazing this game was ahead of its time it never got the respect it should have.
Grandioso videojuego!. Muy adelantado técnicamente, era difícil para un niño, pero amaba sus gráficos, soundtrack y me encantaba recorrer la ciudad en el batimovil, que hermoso era el catálogo del playstation one ,saludos desde Chile🇨🇱👍🏻
This game was so amazing for its visuals, music and atmosphere when it came out. The gameplay was a bit unfriendly to the beginner though. but overall a totally underrated batman game.
As a kid, I was like "Where do I go after the museum?...". The rest of the game, I literally had no idea what to do, or, where to go, afterwards because I never got a clue as to what you had to deal with, next.
I think you had to drive around Gotham and hope that you find police cars, those cars meant a crime scene was close by and there were always clues around crime scenes that let you know where the heck to go next lol.
@@MisterX867- I thought that would help just by driving around Gotham City & collecting clues/health/etc., but, that didn't really work out for me. In theory, I was like "The more police cars I see, the more it's gonna help out...". In practice, it didn't work.
I imagine what it was like when this game was released, how to find out the right paths or what to do in the game, because there were no tips on what to do
I was one of them, it was in August 1998. I bought the strategy guide on the same day because that was literally the *_only_* way to know what to do, what clues to find, what walls to break, how to easily kill bosses, etc. GameFAQs or Acclaim's site didn't have much either. To this day, it's almost like the game being this confusing was a sales gimmick to make money selling guides. My Uncle felt the same way about the Zelda NES games. As for the bosses being easy to kill, the strategy guide recommended you to stock up on aerial/vine/polar missiles, shoot them at the boss, and then keep kicking them when they are down. Tear gas bombs work well too and the brass knuckles can (oddly) do more kick damage. So throughout the whole game, I made sure I had 10 tear gas bombs, 10 aerial attack missles, 10 vine slicing missiles, 10 polar assault missles, and 10 bat tazers. That's 50 of each and it became *_extremely_* useful for me by "Day 3", especially with all of the annoying hockeymen. You could easily get missles in the Westside Station (aerial), Axis Chemicals (vine), Ice Rink (polar), and the computer store (tasers). Without those, there would have been absolutely no way for me to kill all of the bosses and the hockeymen, because the fighting combos for me barely work & the bosses block me a lot.

Hey! Awesome upload. Playing this game for the first time and its been so helpful for getting through it. Does anyone know what happens if you fail a mission? I was in the Gliterrati and I don't think I beat Mr. Freeze in time because he escaped and I got a bad headline. I've successfully beaten the other areas but does anyone know if I'll be able to retry this mission on another day. Is it necessary to complete all the robbery locations to beat the game? Can't find an answer anywhere online.
*honestly my only complaint is the kicking only part with a lack of a stepping dodge. The various vehicles Free roaming on ps1 without it being a driving only game really impressed me.* I see it borrowed a lot from other games but that's ok. I wonder if it would have worked better refining the side scrolling of batman forever on snes to work with this one for interiors. Well, this was interesting and entertaining. Definitely had to be fun driving, maybe not that fun fighting lol. Buy it was fun seeing this. Thank you for the upload.
I'm not for sure if you can progress any further if you fail one; Go back to your save file & retry
This is indeed very impressive for its time! Didn’t know about it
This game looks insanely good for the time I csnt believe I've never heard of it
This game is ahead of its time when you see its graphics 😮
I’m 32 and as never heard of this! This is early day RPG!!!
Before Arkham knight we have this
If this game had some better interiors and a free flow combat system it might’ve been one of the best ps1 games
Thankfully we have the perfect batman game, arkham knight that only left us wanting more like more vehicles and usage of the batcave.
Ah... Batman forever... that game was stressful lol
I remember just driving around ignoring the story.
I think many of us did that lol.
That opening ps intro 😍
Holy Batmobile there's a black mist right ahead everywhere i turn! Lol
This Batman is like " I saved the museum by destroying it " :P
😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂
