Seriously all the binders and additives, chemicals along with the medication has to be filtered out somehow and what effect does those things have on the kidneys? What damage is being done to the kidneys by doctors trying g treat symptoms and make a $$$ instead of addressing the core cause?
Exactly. Not to mention, Keto is traditionally 75%+ fats per day and only 20% protein. And it doesn't matter if it's animal-based or plant-based protein. There is also a HUGE difference between people eating loads of processed sodium vs high quality real salt like Himalayan Sea Salt or Redman's Real Salt. Not to mention, you only really need to worry about having a higher salt intake while you're getting adapted to the diet. I rarely worry about my salt intake at all. Sometimes I get a decent amount, sometimes very little, and sometimes none at all.
It's interesting that Dr. Jason Fung has referenced studies that have shown protein intake has not shown any effect on kidney disease oneway or another.
I found the same information about kidney health and protein intake. I have found no evidence of a study that proves that protein has any affect on the kidney function. Dr. Ken Berry has a very interesting book that touches on that very subject.

This is incorrect, poor diet and being metabolically unhealthy cause diabetes. Diabetes is a side effect of mostly eating a high carb diet which initially causes Insulin Resistance.
Who is overweight with diabetes or pre diabetes, is because they were eating right? Probably no one is overweight due to eating plant based, keto, paleo or carnivore. This is amazing. You confirmed what I thought. I intermittent fasting everyday. The first 4 months I see good results with health improvement for my arthritis, that's my only issue. I cut down carbs and consume excessive protein to keep me feeling full and satisfied for a long fasting 18 hours. I start to notice foaming urine for many days. When diminish protein intake and replace more carbs, urine is back to normal. It's a conflict between carbs and protein. I tested many times, got same result. More carb less protein, no foaming. Increase protein less carb, foam urine is back. This is the only video that tells me what I doubted. Thank you doctor!

Very interesting, I've never heard of that side effect while doing keto! I wonder what the actual reason was behind why it happened to both of you, to help others that want to try the diet as well! (because most people who try it don't experience that, so I wonder what they do "right" to prevent the foaminess from happening)
It's dehydration. While getting adapted to Keto, your body gets rid of sodium and water weight quickly. So, it's usually recommended to add high quality Himalayan Sea Salt or something like Redman's Real Salt to your foods and water. This should clear that issue right up. And, 75% or more of your daily caloric intake should be from FATS, not protein. Otherwise, you're doing Atkins and not a traditional Keto diet. The FATS are what will keep you satiated. If you're eating tons of lean meats, you're still gonna feel hungry. One big meal with fatty meat and added fats from things like butter, lard, coconut, avocado, or olive oils will keep you satiated WAY longer than lean meats with loads of veggies.
But you CAN be plant based Keto. This includes lots of leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, soya beans, tempeh, tofu, avocado, olives and small amounts of legumes and berries (depending on your carb tolerance).
@@ulyssesmarshall5061 if non GMO organic and in small amounts. It depends on your carb tolerance and the context of the rest of your diet. I still am under 50g total carbs. Up to 80g on a higher carb diet. Edamame beans, quality tofu and tempeh in particular are very high in protein and fats and fibre with little carbs. Obviously this is plain without additives. Other beans are very high in fibre and have more carbs though but small amounts can be ok for some, particularly on an active day. You can measure your blood sugar to see the effects.

I have IGA nephropathy, Im stage 4 kidney failure. Before I was diagnosed I went on a keto diet, I gained a lot of muscle and looked great. I was diagnosed last year, I have severe bloating and feel terrible, with constant pain. I’m thinking of doing keto now, it was not advised by my nephrologist but it was suggested by another doctor whom I know. Any advice?
@@kennyfyb5563 Hi there! I couldn't go keto, per my doctor's request, but I did go on the fasting method and have been feeling a lot better. Still not in remission. My bloating and inflammation have drastically decreased. I take a lot of enzymes and probiotics! I truly appreciate all your prayers!
Very balaced info and honest delivery. I lost 120 lbs. on predominantly whole food plant based keto then shifted to more animal based keto. This is where my inflammation levels and CKD numbers began to rise, along with a 25 lb. weight gain, so now I'm going back to basics and sticking with mainly plants, IF, and occasional EF (intermittent and extended fasting). Thanks, Doc!

I wanted to like the ketogenic diet but it was just impossible, I felt horrible. Then I saw a review about the Agoge diet and I tried it and it was awesome.
And this Dr im sure goes along with the fda recommendation for cholesterol level which is the reasoning to prescribe statin drugs which have horrible side effects.

What if someone only has 1 kidney but the function is normal?? Is keto ok for that person, or do you recommend more of the kidney diet plan to include higher carbs? I can’t seem to find that answer anywhere.
Keto is meant to make our bodies use FATS as fuel, NOT proteins. Also, you can eat as little animal based protein OR protein in general as you wish on a Keto diet. It should be 75% or MORE of your caloric intake coming from fats, especially healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, with a smaller amount of saturated fats. If you eat a big salad of low-carb veggies and add in 4 tbsp of olive or avocado oil, that's over 400 extra calories from the pure fats alone and is absolutely considered Keto. Many Keto experts actually recommend this. It's not all about eating tons of bacon, butter, cheese, and saturated fats. Sure, you CAN and still get some benefits, but it's not the best for you in the long haul. As with any diet, if you're gonna do it, you should do it right. Otherwise, it's kinda pointless.
When you watch survival shows you notice quickly that people need fat to survive, then moderate to low animal protein, and occasional plant based carbs. Seems pretty simple, but throw kidney disfunction in the mix 🤷🏼♀️.
GFR is a calculated using age, weight and creatinine levels in serum. This will give some muscular older females a GFR that does not look good. As well as some individuals will have GFR that looks good due to lack of muscle and protein and could still have kidney disease.
Yes, all things should be taken in consideration evaluating ones health. Age, physical size, physical health, race and prior medical history should all be in consideration.
I was in hospital for 10days with kidney failure ,for two days I was on dialysis one day for two hours and the next day for three hours ,and my kidneys were functioning well after the dialysis and the nephrologist told me I will not need to go on to dialysis anymore ,just keep up my fluid intake ,keep away from anti - flams medication ,because I was taking them everyday for back pain ,I have to see a dietitian to what foods are good for me and what foods are poison to kidneys ailments ,I have looked on you tube but some recommends this and some recommends that and I'm confused ,they say bananas, avocadoes, oranges is not advisable because of their high potassium content ,also red meats is not advisable but chicken and fish is okay
@@chetanrsI could not urinate at all ,I had a total block, about protein in my urine I do not know ,what I know is that my body was shutting down, blood pressure was terribly low ,and my sugar was beyond 3 ,although before the nephrologist saw me another doctor saw me and sent me for a sonar ,and there I was asked what am I doing in hospital ,because the sonar showed my kidneys as normal ,if it depended on the sonar they might have sent me home ,then I'm sure I would not be sitting here today writing this comment ,thank goodness for the doctor that gave me over to the nephrologist ,I'm on Adco -retic water tablets because my kidneys do not get rid of access water ,I'm a isolated systolic hypertension sufferer now at the age of 74 ,I do not know when my kidney ailments begun ,maybe with pregnancy when I had toxemia ,or it is hereditary ,my dad died of kidney failure .
My own doctor does not think I have to restrict protein ( am on about 140g a day , weigh 200 pounds and train three times a week ) I have a Gfr of 55 . It seems there is disagreement over this issue.
You are stage 3 but still have plenty of kidney function and diet is not that crucial. It's when your actually in kidney failure that everything becomes extremely important. I had zero kidney function. I did not urinate one drop for 7 months. My kidneys were in shock from Graft vs Host disease following a bone marrow transplant. I'm stage 3 now and sometimes stage 2 depending on how my kidneys are working . I just try to refrain from sugar and too many carbs. I pray I never see another dialysis machine.
Good video & good advice. The main problem with animal protein is getting too much protein, is that correct? The excess protein turns to sugars & therefore damages your kidneys that way?
keto diet messed me up! it should not be recommended to all, different bodies should have personalized diets, this is why i switched to agoge diet, it has done wonders
I agree with you I went vegan for my RA and it caused me so much pain after 4 months I was so depressed and angry because nothing changed that I went into 5 guys and bought the biggest burger they have and in 20 minutes all my pain was gone. Hi there, been keto for 5 years, a1c from as high as 13.3 to 5.1 255 lbs to 185, all blood work improved ! Great kidney dr. Jason Fong he got tired of sending people for amputations,
@Number Six it took about a year, and yes I did do (and still do most of the time) intermittent fasting. Losing the weight was a by-product of getting healthy.
Why do you recommend carbs as a source of energy?? You could be recommending fat for that... Good video but yeah, in keto protein has to be moderate, so there is no reason to think it would stress the kidneys at least not because of the protein. I would like to see a follow up
Great video, I’ve just subscribed to your channel. I’m 42 and I’ve been weight training since I was 17. I do weights 4 times per week and do regular cardiovascular workouts. 2 years ago my GFR was 88. I had another blood test 6 weeks ago and my GFR was 60! I decided to stop taking 5g of creatine every day and eat vegan food 5 days per week. I had another blood test 2 weeks ago and my GFR had increased to 73! I’ve also now removed organic whey isolate protein so it will be interesting to see whether my GFR has improved even further. Do you think it’s likely that I have kidney disease? I don’t drink or smoke. I drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated and 97% of my diet is mostly whole foods.
I am curious to know what your GFR is now 6 months after posting this comment! I am sitting at Stage 2 CKD 74 GFR, I have only one kidney since birthday and I am trying to determine if I vegetarian with fish once a week is my best bet for now to recover. Then after about 2 months of this introduce more proteins if my GFR recovers.
Research more- You need a Cysteine C test and a Urinalysis to see if you actually have high Protein in your urine. Most weight lifters get these tests and find out that do NOT have Kidney disease- then you can resume the creatine-but seriously- you do not need that supplement.
If you ask me, keto is not for most people. It's just really hard to stick with and you feel exhausted. But the *Agoge diet* on the other hand feels great, and it works too.
The protein Hypothesis has no evidence or data to back it up, also, it its not really current, its very antiquated. What happens that the kidney starts not processing proteins properly? The damage happens, this is NOT the cause. We all pee out protein, this is a normal, its only when it is elevated we worry. And the main culprit is damage by excessive glucose in the blood stream. Personally I think this doctor is unqualified to speak about Keto and Kidneys. Jason Fung on the other hand is qualified because hes a "kidney doctor" or more correct, a Nephrologist. His background includes physically studying actual patients and monitoring using his own clinic.
Thanks for the info! I have to say, why don't Dr's who are mainly talking to people who are here in the US, give weights as pounds & oz's instead of kg's? Please use the system of measurement that 99% of us can instantly compute and not some unfamiliar, quasi-indecipherable (for Americans) European measurement.
I eat 5 boiled eggs , 2 avocados large and 1 cup of peanuts or beans and that's it is not high protein at all. total protein is about 53 to 76 grams per day and carbs are about 20 to 33 a day and you basically don't eat anything process
Keto is NOT for me there’s negative effect on me I was always low energy opposite to people who get benefits from it. I feel more sick after doing this diet so I’m switching to Whole food plant based hopefully this diet is the one who will help me from my health problems.
Not true...you should have a flex day once or twice a month where you raise your carbs just a bit (not sugar and tons of carbs, but some healthy carbs like organic sweet potatoes, for instance). A 24-hr fast after the flex day is recommended. Then, return back to healthy keto.
I have been diagnosed with stage 1 ckd and my kidney function is at 47%. I am also suffering from severe gout attacks. Ur fatty meaty diet will give me gout. Any alternative suggestions??

Yeah, Keto is NOT hard to stick with. It's no more restrictive than any other diet aside from maybe if you're eating whatever you want but counting calories only. Just stay away from highly processed foods and foods high in carbs. The reason most processed foods are high in carbs is because companies add sugar to EVERYTHING. People shouldn't be eating that crap no matter what diet they're on. I have a pretty decent variety in what I eat and I've been doing it off and on for over a year. I take short breaks to eat carbs again to get it out of my system and to make sure my body doesn't forget how to use carbs as fuel. Otherwise, Keto is actually the easiest diet I've ever done and the only one where I don't feel constantly hungry.

I'm no doctor, but U stated people with CKD it recommended to eat .6 to .8 grams of protein per kg Where the keto lifestyle recommend between 1.2 and 1.7 grams protein per kg. .8 to 1.2 is small difference, even if you went half way and did 1g per kg. Keto more about the fat, it's not the Atkinson diet.
im sorry your wrong! only in stages 4 and 5 protein intake matters! nobody lost their kidney function from eating protein! main causes? HIGH BLOOD SUGAR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE+ diabetes thats it
From what I heard keto diets have "no sodium" so I have to salt some foods because our body needs so much sodium. And be as for protein, keto is a more moderate amount of protein, so I am eating less protein. So 🤷🤷🤷
Why is plant based protein better? There is no evidence for that. In fact the higher quality protein you eat the lower amount you need. It can be used and does not need to be processed by the kidneys. Controlled trials showed egfr actually increased with high protein diet in CKD 1-3 over one year. Protein restriction is only shown to be beneficial in late stage kidney disease. Salt depends upon your individual response. This low salt recommendation is very old and out of date. The whole video is biased because he is promoting his way of eating. His patients are coming to hime asking about keto because many people have had their kidney disease reverse with keto -- which is unheard of in conventional approaches.
Keto diet isn’t a high protein diet at all ... is more fat than protein. Fat includes Avocado, cheeses, etc. You do have to make sure you do use natural cheeses not processed one because of the potassium or try to balance the cheese with other fats...
Every time I try keto I regret it lol. But I usually get suckered into trying it again every 6 months or so... The last time I spent 2 weeks, never got into ketosis. I had zero energy and was struggling HARD to just hold myself up through each work shift. Absolute hell. And I was overwhelmed with toxins for some reason, maybe from fasting, losing fat (which releases toxins), eating animal protein, etc. Maybe if you're just sitting around most of the day this will work for you. But I'm walking and moving nonstop the entire work shift, 5 consecutive days a week.
Keto is not at all difficult to follow. I can eat a ton of vegetables. It's not at all about just meat and fat. I don't eat meat, only fish, eggs and some dairy. You should NOT overdo the protein. I was on my way to diabetes, but my blood sugar is normal and I lost 19 kg so far.
If you want to lose fat, you should not compromise your well-being with the keto diet. I recommend getting a personalized diet. I've had great success with the Agoge diet for example.

You're a bit misinformed about what the Keto diet is and the different kinds of Keto diets. A Keto diet higher in protein is pretty much the Atkins diet. There already is a Vegan/Vegatarian based Keto diet. But Keto in general is meant to make us fat adapted so we can use fats as fuel, get the amazing health benefits of ketones, and lose weight relatively quickly. A traditional Keto diet has 75%+ of fats, 20% protein, and 5% or less of carbs. I appreciate you trying to be nonbias, but it appears that you don't really understand the diet. I doubt it was intentional, so I'm not trying to talk down on you. Just educate you on it.

Soy, tofu, legumes???
@@ulyssesmarshall5061 if non GMO organic and in small amounts. It depends on your carb tolerance and the context of the rest of your diet. I still am under 50g total carbs. Up to 80g on a higher carb diet. Edamame beans, quality tofu and tempeh in particular are very high in protein and fats and fibre with little carbs. Obviously this is plain without additives. Other beans are very high in fibre and have more carbs though but small amounts can be ok for some, particularly on an active day. You can measure your blood sugar to see the effects.
That will leave you with too much omega 6 fats and not enough omega 3 fats and saturated fats.
@@KatJaguar1122 flax, chia, walnuts, algae, hemp are good for omega 3 if plant based. Saturates can come from coconut and cacao too 😊

Any advice?
Any updates? Praying you’ve seen more success than you imagined/ hoped for!
Could you tell me what you eat for plant based protein that helps, please?

i have ckd3b and had type2 so i went carnivore. all the years of the things that got me the ckd went away. high blood pressure, insulin resistance due to carb intake, and yes diabetes has gone away too. no more meds needed. even the bubbles in my urine has subsided. i'm 65 and feel so great and energetic, finally, perhaps if it does worsen my ckd at least all those chronic illnesses pains and low energy are gone. at least in my advanced years, i'm not suffering anymore. maybe my final days will be with dialysis but i did finally get to feel what it was like to live again

I wanted to like the ketogenic diet but it was just impossible, I felt horrible. Then I saw a review about the Agoge diet and I tried it and it was awesome.

Low carb recommended for proteinuria?
What if someone only has 1 kidney but the function is normal?? Is keto ok for that person, or do you recommend more of the kidney diet plan to include higher carbs? I can’t seem to find that answer anywhere.
I am searching for this info too. Kidney donor, so obviously healthy other than 1 less kidney. Did you ever find anything?

Good video & good advice. The main problem with animal protein is getting too much protein, is that correct? The excess protein turns to sugars & therefore damages your kidneys that way?

Hi there, been keto for 5 years, a1c from as high as 13.3 to 5.1 255 lbs to 185, all blood work improved ! Great kidney dr. Jason Fong he got tired of sending people for amputations,
Sounds great, but how long did it take to lose the 70 lbs, and did you do intermittent fasting during that time?
Do you high Blood pressure ? What was your diet like when your egfr was 88 ?
Research more- You need a Cysteine C test and a Urinalysis to see if you actually have high Protein in your urine. Most weight lifters get these tests and find out that do NOT have Kidney disease- then you can resume the creatine-but seriously- you do not need that supplement.
If you ask me, keto is not for most people. It's just really hard to stick with and you feel exhausted. But the *Agoge diet* on the other hand feels great, and it works too.
great diet plan, just got mine
What is Agoge diet ?
@@ulyssesmarshall5061 a scam that is promoted by bots on every diet video.

Thanks for your unbiased message, cool guy, you didnt really try to push the keto diet, spoke even about vegan keto etc, very nice
This info is important to me. Thank you.
I eat 5 boiled eggs , 2 avocados large and 1 cup of peanuts or beans and that's it is not high protein at all. total protein is about 53 to 76 grams per day and carbs are about 20 to 33 a day and you basically don't eat anything process
I hope you don't have ckd. Good.
Kidney diet: Similar to Keto, but only half protein, less sodium and a bit more carbs (important for energy). But shun sugar! Did I get it right?
Excellent review on diets in general and physiology
This was the most confusing talk so far is the keto bad or good for kidney disease? This is so not helping
as long as u restrict the protein within 0.6-0.8, it is kidney friendly
I agree with you!
Keto is NOT for me there’s negative effect on me I was always low energy opposite to people who get benefits from it. I feel more sick after doing this diet so I’m switching to Whole food plant based hopefully this diet is the one who will help me from my health problems.
You are just an awesome doctor
I've heard testimonies of people's thyroid disease reversing on the keto diet so I'm not sure about these theories that are taught as facts
Not true...you should have a flex day once or twice a month where you raise your carbs just a bit (not sugar and tons of carbs, but some healthy carbs like organic sweet potatoes, for instance). A 24-hr fast after the flex day is recommended. Then, return back to healthy keto.
You're wrong on the protein intake. Keto is 0.6 to 1.2, not 1.2 to 1.7
What about if you don’t have kidney disease but only have one kidney ? Then what?
Nice work doc!
Thank you for your advices

I have kidney stones, but my kidneys are functioning normally; is low carb safe for me?

I'm no doctor, but U stated people with CKD it recommended to eat .6 to .8 grams of protein per kg Where the keto lifestyle recommend between 1.2 and 1.7 grams protein per kg. .8 to 1.2 is small difference, even if you went half way and did 1g per kg. Keto more about the fat, it's not the Atkinson diet.
Per pound not per kilo

im sorry your wrong! only in stages 4 and 5 protein intake matters! nobody lost their kidney function from eating protein! main causes? HIGH BLOOD SUGAR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE+ diabetes thats it
Thank you for the insightful info, Doctor Shusterman.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
So much misinformation about Keto, protein, etc. Old science. Would like to see the research studies he bases his opinions on.
From what I heard keto diets have "no sodium" so I have to salt some foods because our body needs so much sodium. And be as for protein, keto is a more moderate amount of protein, so I am eating less protein. So 🤷🤷🤷
Is there any result that keto diet cured CKD?
Do you know if Pruvit ketones are ok for the kidneys since they have a lot of sodium?
So if you can have it on a diabetic diet you should be able to have it on a kidney diet
Jesus Christ! I literally can’t eat anything but broccoli? Might as well just blow my brains out
not much there anyway
🤣
I’m on stage 4 years just the same
Keto diet isn’t a high protein diet at all ... is more fat than protein. Fat includes Avocado, cheeses, etc. You do have to make sure you do use natural cheeses not processed one because of the potassium or try to balance the cheese with other fats...
What if you have just ONE kidney that is healthy?
Oxalate?
Thanks for your common sense information. I appreciate it!!
I think Dr. Boz' program emphasizes meat protein.
And we have never watched sodium. Carbohydrates cause more water retention than salt. Watch Dr Robert Cywes discusses in his SALT video.
maybe a little less proteins and more fat, which under keto you body uses for energy?
My diabetes 2 is gone thanks to a diet similar to the Keto diet.
If you want to lose fat, you should not compromise your well-being with the keto diet. I recommend getting a personalized diet. I've had great success with the Agoge diet for example.
How is cheeseburger soup butter bacon and eggs…. Low protein!

I tried all these diets and gave up on all except one. Only the Agoge diet helped me lose that stubborn belly fat.
