- [Conversations with Dr. Westman: Episode 63]
There's a lot of fearmongering out there about whether keto diets are dangerous for kidney function.
It's time to set the record straight -- big time!
The two MOST harmful things for your kidneys are:
Chronically high blood sugar and
High blood pressure--diabetes and hypertension.
And what about kidney stones? Do keto diets cause these to develop?
Get the answer to that plus other insights about keto and the kidneys in the latest episode of Conversations with Dr. Westman. - Розваги
My GP put me onto the ketogenic way of eating in 2016. I have MS too, was a little over weight, and my BP had gone up. The years of immunomodulating therapies I was on were hard on my kidneys. My GP was a nutritionist before studying medicine so her practice is rooted in good, sensible nutrition. She always kept up with the latest developments in terms of nutrition because of her training as a nutritionist, so the Keto way of eating made sense to her. I am also an RN, and like doctors, we were not trained well in the facts of nutrition. Anyway, I followed keto for 6 years and everything balanced out, the eGFR, proteinuria, cholesterol, and BP all improved, not to mention moving into a very healthy weight range. Last Christmas I fell off the Keto bandwagon, and yesterday I had blood tests, and took my weight because all of my clothes are a bit too snug. My kidney functions are becoming a problem again, so this has motivated me hugely. In terms of the MS, I cannot tell you how much better the brain fog is too - in fact this is why she wanted me to go on Keto, because of the MS and the emerging evidence of how anti inflammatory it is. Keto works, and is safe.
The problem is not proteins or fats.
The problem is DEHYDRATION.
My 87 year old Mother, only weighs 92 pounds, keto has help dementia and Alzheimer’s we took her off Alzheimer’s meds after 15 years on meds. We had to go back to more carbs for weight and she developed hypernetremia, was hospitalized. Kidneys were at risk! Our battle now is protecting her kidneys, needs weight gain, but Keto keeps her mentally clear.
,
I find these videos very helpful, I’m 77 a diabetic and I try Keto and have reduced my A1C to between 5.5-6.0…down from 6.5-7.0
Thank you for the information! I have only one Functioning kidney and I have had friends to tell me that I should do keto
Thank you for speaking on this topic of keto and kidney disease
Thank you Dr Westman!
Good on you Doc 👍
Thanks, Doc.
My kidney Dr told me keto, also losing weight (with keto) is the best way to keep from having them ever again.
I did have to have a kidney stone removed 3 months into keto, but he said it was in there for a long time, could be a year. When you stop Oxilates (what kidney stones are made of) your body dumps Oxilates from all over your body. In your kidney, they are called kidney stones.
Thank you for sharing your personal journey AND your knowledge for the rest of us. I don’t have any kidney issues but diabetes and CVD and dementia is the greater risk in my family which could end up leading to CKD. Once again, thank you for sharing your experience. 🥰
Good to know there is more and more doctors that know this stuff and are actually helping people!
Not all kidney stones are composed of oxylates.
Thank you!😊🌺
Thank you. Important and helpful !!
I needed to hear this!! Thank you
Thank you Dr. WESTMAN. I needed to hear those specific words said about CKD that Keto is safe. * Is it also safe if I do carnivore Keto with CKD stage 4 /5? I always read that CKD kidney can not clear the body of the stuff the animal protein lives in the blood since kidney can't filter correctly. So it always held me back. I started Keto on August 16th. I thought what do I have to lose. Now I have even more hope. I also am doing it for crazy diabetes . Thank you both for this show. ❤
Thank you for watching Rita 😊
A..
Wondering how you are doing now Rita I was listening to Dr. Ken Berry and he has actually seen the kidney disease reverse a stage.
Hows your CKD? Improvements? still doing high fats low carbs?
Dr. Westman you mention in this video that there were studies and they would soon be published. Have they been published? Can you please update your channel regarding kidney disease and a keto diet?
Would LOVE to know this as well. I have a loved one that is close to being on Dialysis (Thanks to Metabolic Syndrome, HBP, T2D, etc.) and I think Keto is the only way to halt CKD or even heal it slightly. But without some real scientific results to show them, this loved one won't listen to me.
Thank you for this informative video, Dr Westman
Thank you for watching 😊
So keto is safe for a person with 1 kidney, then?
My PCM told me it wouldn't be a good fit for me because I only have 1 kidney, but I don't know how well educated she is on the keto diet or what her personal feelings toward keto are.
Please have RCT on keto diet compared to high carb DASH diet on kidney diet.
Where is the link for the Keto phase calculator? Thanks Glen and Dr. Westman!
Hi Kaye, apologies, we are busy updating and refining it. It will be back up on our website in the next week or so. 🙌
nice
Me gustaria saber así como yo k apenas comienzo hacer las diálisis puedo hacer dieta cetogenica?
Gratitude for the knowledge DR. Eric Westman
People believe that changing your diet is like winning a prize from one day to the next,
Friends, a bad diet for 30 years or 40 years or 50 years or 60 years, etc., can't be resolved overnight, they spend their whole lives eating wrong and want to blame it on an ancestral diet? We must go back to what worked before, and wait for the results to see what has improved!!! It is definitely proven that meat and animal fat greatly satisfies our appetite, which means we are on the right path.
*Lose weight*
*Decrease in blood pressure*
*Decrease in blood sugar*
These are proven facts!!!
Finally, wait for the time to adapt to the new diet, your body needs to learn again to burn this new food fuel, some adapt in a few days, others can take months, and others a few years, I believe that an efficient food transition is around 5 years on the diet, whether ketogenic or carnivorous
I usually eat more protein, but I'm adding more fat and I intend to add 30% protein and 70% fat, today I'm eating 70% protein and 30% fat,
Thank you for the extremely important content
I'm not concerned with Kidney disease relating to keto but I am concerned about stones. Could Dr. Westman address this (youtube won't let me put a link, it's the meta-analysis entitled "Incidence and Characteristics of Kidney Stones in Patients on Ketogenic Diet: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" ) meta-analysis specifically or is he considering a study of the incidence among his patients? So much out there is written by folk with a strong anti-keto bias, and info from Dr. Westman would be helpful. as the meta-analysis suggests ''More studies are required to understand the risk of recurrent kidney stones with the ketogenic diet." I expect that no
one has more access to a large ketogenic diet following populace than Dr. Westman. I know for many of us, other diseases present more of a specter than Kidney stones, and so it would be lovely to find a way to minimize risk AND keep on Keto.
There's no link in the description, I'm afraid.
Can't find the link
Why do peoples EGFR fall below 60 and creatine go up so much when they eat meat??
So is protein in the urine bad?
My efgr went higher and creatine down after I switched over to plant based from Keto. Kidney function normal and less protein in my urine.
YES 🎉🎉🎉
My mum has diabetes and her doctor actually told her to occasionally eat something sweet?
Dr Westman, have you done any videos covering red meat on T1/T2 diabetes? I had someone tell me they reckon that a T1 diabetic cant have red meat. i'm pretty sure it's not true. but I cant remember if you covered this or not
@Engelbert Humperdinck yeh I dont have much faith lol in the current standard medical advice, especially as we know their advice around T2 diabetes and weight loss is completely wrong. I just wondered how to answer that when someone throws that question at you.
Hi Sean, you certainly can have red meat being a T1D
@Engelbert Humperdinck Hello there, long time no chat. I have also wondered about Eric’s skin. Perhaps he has an allergy? I have noticed the change recently too and am also wondering … although it’s none of my business at the same time.
@Engelbert Humperdinck yes, I am aware of their utter nonsense… all of it defies intelligent review of what real science there is… I believe a lot is still unknown regarding ageing, our microbiome and our outward presentation. Gut flora are transitory for an entire sphere of stimuli … hormones (for which they are intimately responsible) emotions, external stresses of lifestyle and living habits or the lack there of. So much influences the human body there are many who forget this and try to advocate for a simple one size suits all.
Lovely to connect with you again. 🌸🇦🇺
I have one kidney, my eGFR is 53 & my creatinine is slightly elevated is keto safe for me
Yes, it’s just real food, without carbs 😊
have you tried KETO? what did it do for your kidney issue?
I'm not a doctor, but my Kidney GFR is 65 at age 79 was close to 40 2 years ago..Red meat will raise creatinine and lower your GFR.. I cut red meat from my diet, and occasionally ate Fish and Chicken for proten..Also lower my protein
Creatinine is just a marker they use to calculate EGFR. Lowering the creatinine in you blood due to diet or reduced muscle mass doesn’t change your GFR in reality.
@@a3300000 Well then why do they use EGFR to evaluate your CKD..That's the only thing they go by
GFR off due to Creatine Mononyxrate. Renal Doc advised only 1gr protein per Kg bodyweight. Made graphic example of hitting kidneys with a hammer. Definitely not 1gr per pound. Labs went in range when stopped Creatine. Have resumed Creatine and continued higher protein diet. 😋 Pencil ✏ neck doesn't get it. Yeesch! 🏋
@John David Rhoderick Orr creatine. And protein powder. Renal labs still in range. Plan to resume supplements. 🙏👹
I’m not seeing the calculator?
They said it will be coming in earlier comment. 👆👆👆
Don't think you will ever get a true study done that will show you can get away from drugs!
I only have One kidney now...what about the carnivore diet?
This doc. is great there are a few others one is Ken Berry he is amazing and on a carnivore diet and talks a lot about the benefits. his wife does a ketovore diet which is what I do. I eat about 5 to 10 carbs a day you might try following them. yes i have kidney disease and yes it is helping
Is the keto diet definitely harmful to the kidneys?
Watch the video
No. Keto diet is not harmful. What is harmful is sugar and carbs because they cause diabetes which is the leading cause of kidney failure. Doctors should be telling their patients to stop eating carbs to save their kidney function.
@@jonmoceri ic ic.. thanks for the information

With all due respect, I can't help noticing Dr. Westman's red, blotchy face. Too much time in the sun or tanning booth? Something in the diet? Genetics?
Geeezzz.......that's what you got!
@Engelbert Humperdinck exactly.....you don't know that he hasn't.
@Engelbert Humperdinck Yes, I have rosacea as well and have wondered and been concerned about Dr. Westman. I have been ketogenic/carnivore for 3.5 years. Only thing that helped me was Metrogel topical via my primary doctor. Wondering if Dr. Westman is having an allergic reaction to some food or environmental chemical; plants, pollution etc
@Engelbert Humperdinck Exactly. I certainly don't hold it against him. Who am I to judge? But he's promoting health and this isn't exactly a rosy ('scuse the pun) picture.
Me too!
