    What a great design.

    Cutting the tip off of the forstner bit was genius. I've done stuff with magnets before, almost poked through a few times and still never thought off doing that.

    Very nice work and those Maple Bow Ties show up really nice with the Walnut.
    20 Magnets eh, that's alot of magnets on the back, i don't think those knives are going to fall off there. Well Done on a Great Build.

      I'm right there with you. So many new channels coming up that are doing awesome projects. I feel like some of the larger channels have their own ego exploding out and aren't producing what originally drew so many people to them.

      parillaworks I’ve been waiting to make little salt cellars using a Forster bit. But that was my issue. The little pointy tip. Problem solved!

    • @heyimamaker

      Agreed, a flat bottom forstner should exist!

    • @gregmislick1117
      @gregmislick1117 5 років тому

      @@parillaworks Alternatively, chuck up a flat bottom router bit of appropriate diameter and finish the last 1/8" of the hole that way ( the spike on the 1/2" Forsterner bit is around 1/8" ... and that is enough to really mess up your plans with regard to magnets - don't ask me how I know .... now using 1/2" by 3/8" magnets - no fooling around this time!) ( I don't have a drill press yet, so the router bit option didn't seem doable hand held)

    Great video and excellent result! I really like the minimal but beautiful design.
    I do my ties/inlays differently:
    I trace the bow tie with a pencil, make a chisel line just inside the pencil so the final tie has a snug fit. I router out the material, and the chisel line prevents tear-out along the edges. You can go slow and get super close to the edge. Then, just chisel out the last little bits in the corner and you're done! Add some glue, and tap the tie in with a mallet. I can do about 10 inlays in an hour this way. The next day, I flush cut them with the router if they are proud of the surface and sand smooth. Take care! :)

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! That seems like a sound method. I may give it a shot next time!

    • @seanhaney8748
      @seanhaney8748 6 років тому

      I had to come up with it (with inspiration from other techniques) because my drill press is tiny and I do ties/inlays on big slabs and table tops that I can't maneuver under the drill press. :)

    Good afternoon, I speak here from Brazil and I consider your work exceptional and inspiring, I would like to know if in this specific case, I could reduce the crack of the wood using a clamp and then paste the "ties"

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 років тому

      Hi Julio. The wood shrank in size so you can't clamp the crack shut. However, the bow ties will prevent the crack from opening further.

    That turned out great! Love the bowties! Also, I have the same knife set! ha ha. I recently made a video of a knife holder like this, but ended up just putting the magnets on the front after not getting good adhesion from the back. Mine were much thinner than these you had.

    I love the bow ties and the overall look of your knife rack.
    I do have a question. I'm currently in the middle of making my own knife rack. I have everything glued up & ready to go as soon as my magnets arrive from eBay. So I'm curious about the maximum thickness of wood I can leave and still expect to get a good grip on the knives. I have N42 magnets on order. I know I can just experiment once the magnets arrive, but can you shed some pre-emptive light on the matter?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Clay. From the unscientific testing I did, no thicker than 1/8” worked fine. I think I was closer to 1/10”. That presents a problem, though, because a Brad point bit might poke through. For common sizes, I buy an extra forstner bit and grind the spur off so I can get closer to the bottom. I can’t remember if I went over that in this video.

    Another great video mate - full of really useful tips especially the forstner bit one! Although i've got to ask what the point of the blue tape when you were doing the butterflies? It just seemed like a massive waste of time since you've already got knife lines to work off of?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! The blue tape gives a you a good visualization of the area you need to chisel. I don’t think it helps you in a technical sense as much as it just gives you better awareness.

    Love it but perhaps some sort of inlay to indicate where the magnetic lines are on the front? Inlaid wire, cord, or wood strips, emojis, burned in graphics?

      @Gelovan682 6 років тому

      great idea thanks

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 років тому

      Not a bad idea! The inlay would be covered by the knife so it wouldn’t take away from the design. Thanks!

    • @joelthoenen3733
      @joelthoenen3733 5 років тому

      I was thinking you could drill from the front and use a maple dowel to plug the magnets. That would give you exactly where to place the knives and some contrast when you can see them. You also wouldn't have to worry about the forstner bit bc you'd only have to go just deep enough for the magnet and plug

  • @Gelovan682
    @Gelovan682 6 років тому

    maybe I missed it--how much final material between magnets and knives, i'm guessing 1/8 or 1/16th? is there a 'front' and 'back' to the magnets? are you stacking several magnets together? how many? great project thanks

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 років тому +1

      Each hole had a single 1/2” x 1/2” magnet. They’re north/south magnets but it’s not important because I’m sticking the magnets to metal and not other magnets. I left a little under 1/8” between the knives and magnets.

  • @adamunderwood3337
    @adamunderwood3337 6 років тому

    great video, lovely project. I have two questions, the first being what does the tape actually help with? Does it just give you a good guide to work from? Also how deep did you place your bowties?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 років тому

      Hey! The blue tape gives a good visual contrast of what you need to remove. The bow ties went about 5/8” deep.

    The problem with using wood as a plate is that it will get damaged pretty quickly. I have one made out of metal bar and after a few months, it already has a number of very visible scratches.

    Beautiful knife rack. Knives should be hung point down. If you grab a knife and it slips from your hand, point up means the blade travels across your hand as it's falling. Point down means the blade is traveling away from your hand as it falls.

    Beautiful! But it's much safer to store knives point down on a rack like this. If you're reaching for a knife and it slips, you won't make an instinctive grab for the blade as it slips through your fingers.
