BUILD: Old School Desk Restoration
Вставка

- My wife found this old school desk on craigslist for really cheap but it needed a lot of work. I decided to completely restore it and make all new bent plywood laminations for it, which I covered in antiqued street maps of our city and surrounding areas. I coated all the surfaces in bar top epoxy and buffed the gloss down to a nice satin finish.

Have the same desk here ready to go, plus a single chair from school days. Thank you sooo much for showing, sharing, teaching!!
Not a wood worker myself, so I thought it was pretty interesting how you made replacement curved wood components. Thanks for sharing!
Bless you for making this. I've been trying to figure out how to adjust thie seat and desk for my son. Thank you for making this video, I can also now paint it his favorite color now too.
Using an iron to flatten out the map was pure brilliance!
Thanks It was a bit of an experiment but I was really pleased with how well it flattened out
Loved the restoration - right up until the point that you glued a map to it! Nothing wrong with it - everyone has their own taste. Guess I'm just a purist. Great video none the less!
Thanks I wasn’t sold on the map at first but once the top coat went on I started liking it
I love watching stuff like this ! I use old maps as the inside face of box bottoms I make as gifts.
I love the map - that took it to another level -
Thanks it’s our city and surrounding areas so the boys can learn where everyone lives etc (and not get lost like I do)
Great job. I love how you transformed it. I remember this style desk.
That is cool! I use to use a desk like this at a local elementary school. It was built int he 60's and I guess they never bothered upgrading anything, they actually did a good job keeping everything original.
Very cool. I like the fact you integrated an old map into it. Will give kids hours of fun just looking at the map wondering where the secret treasure is. Great job.
It’s our area so they can learn where all our family and friends live too
Love the map idea!
This is about the best restoration project I've e error seen on you tube
This is beautiful. I’ve seen these desk at thrift shops and have wanted to buy one to restore but didn’t because I couldn’t picture it. But wow 😮!!! Nice job
Thank you!
I love this!!! Including the map on it was an awesome touch! 👍👍👍
Pretty smart, using the ply-bent pieces as your forms for making new ones. AND reinforcing the adage that you can never have enough clamps!
JusBidniss absolutely! You can never have too many. I have a fair number but I still find my self running out at times
Neat project! I like how it turned out.
Thank you!
I'd have never thought about using a map like that. I'm going to have to steal that idea! :)
Please do!
I'm in the planning stages of a very similar desk... where did you get the replacement rivets for the ones you dremeled off?
Looks just like the ones we used as kids in school. Thanks for sharing this restoration.
Thanks yeah the sound of it opening really takes me back.
The map was a nice touch too. I could have used that in geography class. LOL
That's a really cool idea with the map! Nice job!
Thank you!
Just so I have this straight, you took an antique desk and rebuilt it to look like an antique desk. Well done.
Exactly! 😂
Wow that turned out great nice job... Great skills you have.!
That came out awesome. Great job.
Thanks 😁
Great job... Loved the map upgrade
Thanks I figure this way maybe my boys won’t be directionally impaired like their old man :)
Well you did a great job and it came out very nice !!!!
Thank you!
Great video and workmanship, thanks for sharing.
Look's pretty perfect to me, great job, Brian UK !!!
Brian Hinton thanks!
Looks awesome, i think you need one more clamp.....lol
Always need one more!
You can never have enough clamps!
You say that like you're joking, but you aren't a real woodworker until you've realized you need at least 10 more clamps...
Great video, cheers from Egypt!!
Dude!!That was A MA ZING!!
Greets fro Greece
Nice work, just wouldn't have done the map myself. Wood was too beautiful after all that laminating work
Greg Alan Edwards yeah if I had better quality plywood I probably would have left it, the map was a risk but we ended up liking it better in the end
Wow. Amazing! I have just started refurbishing old pieces myself. And I may have come pretty far from knowing little more than "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey", but this is so intimidating. I have this exact desk, but the metal frame only. Besides needing a ton more clamps, any advice on how to ensure I don't ruin this same project of mine? Mainly, the shaping of the wood. You made it look so effortless. Eek
You could do an entire video on just applying that bar top!
Hi there I just got one of these desks and I was looking at how to lock the desk and the chair in a taller position? i know there is a button under there but it will not stay for me. Thank you for your help. Yours was the only one that I found out here!
Look at that - a beautiful, clean canvas. For middle schoolers to write curse words inside 😐🤣 This came out great! I liked the technique for laminating the ply to the shape of the existing pieces, and that came out dead level was so satisfying 🤘🏻 Well done!
Thank you!
Funny I don’t know why I never considered tinting the mod podge. Thanks for the idea. I love the desk.
Brilliant, looks great!
Thank you!
That map is a nice touch.
Not really the kind finished product I like but I can appreciate all the work that went into it.
I like very much!! What thickness was the plywood used for the back of chair before glueing them together? Thanks
Brilliant job :) I have a few old school tables to work on and I'm happy that this video came up as a suggestion :) Great channel ॐ
Love it! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you!
Nice work !!! Love it !!!
Thank you!
Nice Work! Well Done!!
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!
bravo...never seen this application when i was in school..lol...yes..i am that old....but..fantastic job...
Thanks!
Wow a lot of work but well worth it. I wanted to see more of the moving seat mechanism at the end.
it’s pretty interesting design the seat swivels (to a point but it does have stops) it also slides in and out several inches. Also the top has 3 different positions
I noticed it in the beginning. Was just curious how smooth it was after restoring and greasing.
bruh you got me fucked up when you pulled the map out, A+
Dustin Grimes thanks 👊
Thank you so much for this video I just found one today . Still in mint . Your missing the latch that’s why it stops . It’s for the desk to be straight as well then tilt. But amazing restoration. Can it be adjusted or just one size
Great stuff man, really great. Video production really nice too although personally I'd love it if you dialled back the blurring when you put a headline up, I'd like to continue to see what you are doing - but that might just be me - anyone else feel the same? Like if you do, ignore if you don't care.
Thanks for watching! Sorry about the pull focus but without it sometimes the background makes the text hard to read unless you border all the text which can be sorta ugly at times
Brilliant idea with the map. This was so cool to watch. I’ve used mod podge before on a top but never thought of finishing with epoxy. Learned a lot in this video. Thanks man.
Thank you for watching!
I remember those desks were cool😉
They really take you back!
Restoration Level 100!!!
Great job!
Thank you!
That is awesome!!
Thanks :) The boys seem to like it
Incredible !!
Thank you!
Omg I wish I had one as a kid!! Actually I'd love an adult sized one too
great work
Thank you!
Stunning
I've cleaned a few of those desk in my 30 years as a school custodian.
Lol yeah I bet, hopefully not in the San Juan Unified School district though... if so sorry 🤣
very nice job i like the map but i think i would have not done the seat parts with the map but overall very nice
Awesome 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Great video. I’m redoing two of them right now. What rivets did you use for the plywood on the chairs?
I used screws but they’ve been problematic. If I had to do it again I’d use Chicago screws
Love it!
Romi Araya thank you!
did you just put grease on the swivel or did you replace the gasket also? thanks!
Great project. I've only used pour-on epoxy once in the last couple years. Cannot believe how flexible/soft it is (bathroom vanity over mahogany) -- using as a writing surface in your application, do you have recommendations to mitigate risks? Not sure if it's a specific brand or putting it on thinner? Mine cured correctly, but if you can leave an indent if something sits on it for a couple weeks. Yours looks awesome and I'd like to use it again!
This is just the cheap stuff from the big box “parks super glaze”. It’s pretty tough stuff though if if cures correctly it’s designed as a bar top coating which will see a lot of wear and tear. I can’t dent this with a finger nail or anything and it was actually a bit of a task to buff and polish down to the satin. That being said I did add a little to much hardener but I doubt that effected it all that much.
Yeah, that was the stuff. Used a full bottle of A and B. Wonder if it just was too thick given the humidity. Mixed the living piss out of it. Thanks for the feedback.
Great job
Thanks!
Superb! 😀❤️
Extrem cool
Awesome desk, maybe could have done with a slight ridge to catch the paper when the top is on an angle. Love the end result
Yeah I was afraid it would be annoying when writing flat. I think if my boys tip it up I’ll just tape the work down.
Hey would you know if these desks are lead based?
How did you put the back of the chair on what did you use I have a old school desk working on it can you help please don't know how old this video is but I keep watching you do this chair all I have to do now is give that chair a good sanding down just need to know how to put the back of the chair back on love your video.
The next time my wife asks me why I need more clamps, I'm going to show her 3:43.
Bob Lee you can never have too many clamps!
What kind of grease did you use for the swivel mechanism? I am refinishing an identical desk right now, wondering what to use for the swivel though? Thanks!
Brennan Boettcher white lithium is what I used if I recall it’s held up great so far
Cool!
you spray paint on the floor like that? comes out fast?
This was so awesome! I was just given .oat the exact desk by someone but I can't figure out how to adjust the height on the seat and table. Do you remember how you adjusted them? After watching your video, now my daughter wants me to redo her desk so it can be all pretty too! 🤦🏻♀️😝
Journey of A Kangaroo Mama onbours there are just a couple clamps that you loosen then you can adjust and re tighten. After loosening you might try twisting the table back and forth a bit while pulling up if it seems stuck.
@@TabLeft hmmm unfortunately, ours look like smooth caps on each side and I haven't been able to get a good grip with a wrench or anything else on it!
Journey of A Kangaroo Mama maybe a pipe wrench or strap wrench? Not sure I’m not really familiar with that style sorry :(
Amazing
I have the exact same desk. I'm going to start the restoration after the summer heat lets up some.
So, after 3 years, what would you have done differently? I appreciate the time you took to film/edit this video. I know it can be harder with a wife and kids.
i might have used good threaded inserts or Chicago screws to attach the furniture rather than just screws alone. after a year or so several had wiggled loose and wallowed out the hole due to the kids doing kid stuff. i filled the holes and and put the screws back with a drop of CA glue and its been fine since but i should have done it right from the start with chicago screws.
@@TabLeft thanks for the reply. I'll keep that in mind when it's time.
man, thats strait up old school
Awesome work! What kind of wood did you use for this? It looks like a thin plywood but i can’t tell how thick the layers are and what type of wood. Hope you see this!! I’m working on this same desk now. Last part to go is the wood.
adamrallard thanks! And the bent laminations where made from thin 3ply underlayment
TabLeft Workshop is that pine? Do you think thin birch plywood layers would work if gluing/bending along the grain?
Muy bien
Nice rebuild let Robert know if you need more clamps(Cheers) ✨🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺✨👍
awesome
Thanks 👍
Can I ask how you reattached the seat and the seat back, back to the frame? I am about to start a very similar desk and I'm a little afraid to drill out the rivets cause I'm not sure how I would replace them.
Nathan Huber I just used corse pan head screws, I actually purchased a bunch of Chicago screws (male and female paired screws that function more or less like a rivet) but opted not to use them at the last minute but as I didn’t want them to obscure the the map decoupage.
That turned out awsome question what map did u use lol
Dallas Woiken it’s our city and surrounding areas so we can use it to teach our boys where friends and family live
TabLeft Workshop thats a great idea.i never would have thought about that 👍👍👍
Very nice
What are the rivets on the seat back. I'm refinishing a couple desks bit cannot find the rivets
I didn’t find them either I just used screws but in retrospect I would have used Chicago bolts
Nice rebuild! Love the map overlay. I always though Modge Podge had a pretty hard finish. Did you just want something even more durable? Looks great! Thanks for sharing.
I wanted the thick look but also since it’s a writing surface it needs to be pretty glassy smooth, the modpodge would have some texture from brushing which could make writing kind of pain (well that was my thinking anyway I didn’t actually try writing on it)
TabLeft Workshop I didn't think about the texture problem. That's a good point.
+Seth Galitzer Its Mod Podge loool.
Were those desks painted with lead paint ??
I just got one of these desks for my daughter. Did you re-rivet the seat abs seat back? If so, where did you get them?
Great job by the way.
I used screws. In retrospect I should have riveted them or used Chicago screws. My kids are pretty rough on it and some of the screws backed out and wouldn’t hold in the pine plywood after a few tightenings. I added a few drop of CA to stiffen the wood and act as a thread locker which seems to be working fine for the last year or so. If it fails again I’m gonna use Chicago screws.
U r genius bro.
What you didn't show me what's the part I came looking for what did you do for rivets? For reassembly and isn't the seat adjustable for height I have no idea how to adjust it little help
I sat in a desk just like that in grade school.
Working on this one sure took me back lol
Well...Hmmmmmm.? I think you did a fantastic job.
Thanks.
What are those thin tipped markers called? Can't find anything like them in the UK...
Paul McGuinness there are two kinds that I use. One is called a “long nose pattern marker” made by “FastCap” the other is called the “Reach” made by “Dixon”
Cool... [rushes off to amazon to search :-)... ]
OMG - £37 for a pen!?!
Paul McGuinness lol yeah not that expensive here. The fastcap in about $6 and the reach is about $3
I think I'll look on eBay and get a bundle of them to justify the postage :-)
What tool did you use to take off the seat. I would like to adjust it for my son
Mine just came off with a wrench of some percussive persuasion to free the rust.
What kind of grease did you use for the hubs when you reassembled it??
M probably white lithium, might have just been garage door opener grease though I can’t recall
@@TabLeft After some further research I found that the white lithium is best for metal on metal contact so I did go out and get some of that. Thanks!
When i first saw the map i was all like "that looks familiar" until i realized that it was a map of Sacramento
Michael lol yeah I’m in Elk Grove all the furniture has different areas Elk Grove Sacramento Roseville so the boys can learn where all the family lives
What are the dimensions of the desk top?
Welcome to TabLeft Elementary School.
Today's Lesson: Restoring old school furniture.
Haha!
