- The lovely folks at #BooksAreMyBag very kindly sent my mum @louisesavidgemuses4135 and I some book tokens so we could go #BookShopping together in the lead up to Bookshop Day which is this Saturday coming. A reminder to head to a favourite bookshop and pick up something for yourself or someone else and maybe get a book recommendation or two from your local lovely booksellers. We went wild in West Kirby Bookshop and I came home with quite the #bookhaul as you’ll see in this video.

A tote and a coupon, the good life. Rouge is going on the list.
I was sold on Death Becomes Her. Dan knows how to sell me a book. Ha.
I really enjoyed Your Story, My Story. I hope you like it. Love that Dan showed Rouge…. A Canadian book that I’m hoping to read soon. Great tote bags too. Awesome book that your Mom picked for you. 😊💙
I had some good book pickers in that bookshop didn't I?
Clarice Lispector sounds fascinating. Adding to the TBR.
I’m really looking forward to getting to it!
You and your mum are super cute.
I am exactly the same with cookbooks. I only ever make the stuff that has a photo with it!
No photo, no cooking, no buying frankly hahaha.
The way your mum explained her choice of book for you just showed how well she knows you. The love she has for you is evident in her musings ❤
Awwww that is so lovely of you to say.
Simon and Louise, a gorgeous book bag, a cool indie bookstore, interesting books, and buying a book for each other(both short story collections, kismet), checks all the boxes for me. ❤💙🩷💜💛💚🧡📚
It was a lovely day and yes, how spooky that mum and I both picked each other short story collections, something must have been in the air.
Having the bookshop to yourselves is a dream come true!
We were very very lucky!
Enjoyed that Both 👍🤓 xx
I want to reread The Hare With Amber Eyes: read it some time ago a bit hurriedly, but it stayed with me 😌 I like the sound of Your Story, My Story; want to read Pet & the ‘Brontë book’ looks lovely (you’ve reminded me I haven’t yet watched that film!)
To name but a few ….. oh the joy of 📚
Emily is suuuuuuch a good film. I was recommending it a lot this weekend at Durham Festival actually.
You bought Pet 🤩 Hooray 🎉 I love the sound of the Brontë book too. Didn’t we just have the best time? ❤❤❤❤
I mean it was ok. Hahahahaha. I had to get Pet. You’ve wanged on about it so much, plus Rachel’s recommendation tipped me over the edge.
Oops, just lost my message, darn it! It was long and rambling so I'll try to give a quick version.
I love these videos with the two of you together. Interested in both Pet by Catherine Chidgey
Fifteen Wild Decembers by Karen Powell.
AND I was really excited to see a recent repeat of Bargain Hunt where you did a presentation from Liverpool Library. Awesome surroundings and amazing presentation - unfortunately I forget that book you were showcasing, you just took pride of place!
Trying to hunt down that totebag, though not sure it's available in Australia yet. Sending you special blessings Simon.
Hahaha that Bargain Hunt gets sooooooo many repeats, it tickles me.
Lovely to see you both together! Such a treat! Many kisses!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
I feel exactly the same way about cookbooks😂
If it doesn’t have a picture I’m not cooking it… and if a cookbook doesn’t have many pictures I’m not buying it 🤣
I love the turquoise bear in the background 🐻
And the bags are gorgeous. The books, too, of course.
I love me a bold knickknack on my shelves. Haha. The bags are really beautiful this year. Loving the blues.
So lovely to see you both again! Great video as ever, Simon 🎉❤
Awww thanks Fiona!
Yes! ‘When women were dragons’ was one of my favourite books of last year.
Oooh I’ll let mum know.
foodie book that I am just starting is The kitchen front by Jennifer Ryan. Possible for your October book.
My October prompt book is already sorted. Also I think it has to be a food type, not food adjacent. But I’ll look up The Kitchen Front as a possible future read.
Mum and son goals, you two!
Awwww thank you!
Pet is great! I mostly loved the vibes and the nostalgia - having grown up in New Zealand in the 80s it was so, so familiar. It's very readable though, hope you enjoy it.
I will be heading to it in a few weeks so I am hoping that I enjoy it a lot too!
The brilliant Snow Ball is the book Faber has previously reissued. Hackenfeller's Ape is a very sweet story, I think you will enjoy it. As well as her books Brigid Brophy is also known for her work to establish public lending rights and the money authors receive each time their book is borrowed from a library.
Aha! That is where I had seen the authors name, I think that is published by Faber here too so close but no cigar! Ha.
I love the curb appeal of that bookstore!
It’s fab isn’t it!
I loved Denton Welch's 'In Youth Is Pleasure'!
I’m looking forward to it!
PS - super bookshop/sellers 🤓
Jordan and Dan are fabulous.
I just finished Fifteen Wild Decembers and I absolutely loved it. It's definitely an excellent book for a cold, rainy day.
Oooh noted. I really liked her first book so I’m really excited for this one.
Beautiful bag, beautiful people and beautiful books. I mean, what more can ya ask for? 🍂 (And throw in independent shops and tokens as well, it’s pure joy!) Excited to hear your thoughts on Pet and Clarice Lispector when you get to them 🌻
I am hoping to get to both of them quite soon, spooky mum and I bought each other short story collections.
Love watching the two of you together. Love that autumnal shirt! Wish I lived near West Kirby Bookshop! Or near Harris and Harris 2.0. I actually just finished reading North Woods and it’s very cleverly done and has lots of ghosts in it for you.
I am very lucky to have West Kirby Bookshop down the road, I am off there shortly for an event... that I am not chairing. I am very excited as it is Laura Jean McKay an Australian author I am a big big fan of. Sooooo excited for Harris and Harris in December. Also very excited for North Woods.
Lispector is perfect
I’m definitely intrigued for it.
I’m picking up Pet from the library. Interested to hear how you like it.
I’ll report back in due course.
Hi Simon Pet v pop in its home country NZ.
Yes I heard, one of my lovely Patreons sent mum her latest from NZ as it’s not out here yet and my mother is a super fan.
I recommend A Lover of Unreason
by Yehuda Koren and Eilat Negev )about Assia Wevill who Ted Hughes left Sylvia Plath for and who also died by suicide). If you are interested in the woman often left out of the story of Hughes' life.
Oooh Mum might like that, sounds like her kind of thing.
Indie booksellers are the best in the publishing world and I’m not just saying that because I’m a publisher rep! Indie store are the best place to be for your holiday shopping, and if you live in Vancouver (as I do) you have many amazing stores to choose from ❤
I would looooooooooove to visit Vancouver one day.
I loved A Helping Hand and I’m so excited to get the new DB edition of her book. I’m not too sure that Celia Dale doesn’t like old people, I felt that the book was very sympathetic to how vulnerable the elderly are and how complicated their emotional lives can be.
Some really exciting recommendations, thanks so much
Oooh differing opinions, I shall have to see if I am on your team or Dan's when I have read it!
Your mum is so stylish!
Hahaha. Thank you, she will love that.
Denton Welch also painted, quite well.
Yes Jordan mentioned that when he was summing the book up.
Thanks Simon and Louise for a terrific vlog. Looking forward to what you think after reading books chosen for you.
I just added “Other People Manage” to ye old TBR. I finished audio version of “Once Upon A River” by Diane Setterfield and read by Juliet Stevenson. Went in blind on this one and it turned out to be a 5 star selection.
Once Upon a River is the only Setterfield I have yet to read, I need to get to it at some point soon.
Oh my goodness, those Books Are My Bag bags are gorgeous! I love the edition of Rouge with the red pages (WOW!), but sadly the book was a miss for me (it's more a retelling of Snow White with some problematic elements). Nonetheless, Awad's writing is as gorgeous as ever, if a little redundant in Rouge. As always, I'll be looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the book. And as ever, it's wonderful to see you and your mum together. Cheers!
Oooh I should have added my usual line of ‘don’t tell me if you didn’t love it just yet as I am excited for them, wait until I’ve read them’ which I usually say at the end. Drats. I trust Dan’s taste so we shall see.
@@SavidgeReads Oh shoot! Sorry about that, Simon. 🤐
Hi Simon do you know of any book challenges for 2024
Challenges such as?
Rouge is another stunner from Mona Awad, the master of the modern dark fairy tale. Be careful with Lispector; it's not literature...it's witchcraft.
Oooh I like me some witchcraft!
