Good job man! This was helpful
evaporust works really good on rust removal
Love your persistence, well done so far keep it up 👍
Nice job man. I honestly had not idea what you're going to do on that tank. I always learn something new watching your restoration adventures.
Its cool to see you restoring something that most would throw on the junk pile! Enjoying this series!
Man! I love this build series! Keep up the good work!
Tackling my first bike build. After a couple years of watching build and restoration videos I feel like I can handle it! Thanks for the info and tips!
great video ,thank you for uploading. can't wait to see the next video.
BRAVO!! my friend , your the first one i have seen to actually try to fix all the holes by soderin them i have to give it to you , couse it is a real hard job ,but the only right way imo !!!thumbs up for that!!
Respect to your hard work.
Love these vids keep them coming
That tank is saint-like
well done. I admire your tenacity.
Thank you for the video Maison, Im suprised you did such a good job man. xD I voted get a new tank haha.
Informative and great content as always *thumbs up*
So helpful!! I am about to do the same thing for the first time, your vid game me the push, thanks
Helps a lot ! thank you for sharing
I'm currently balls-deep in a restoration of 1970 yamaha ht1, and there have been a few things on your Suzuki I've envied because they were so much more intact than mine; the tank however is not one of them. Luckily, my Yam tank had only surface rust and a couple very small dents, interior pristine. Thanks for the vid! I enjoy your sense of humor.
i just picked me up a 1972 kawasaki 175 stored for 17 years gas tank not as bad as yours but close.. thanks for video helped me alot ,keep up the good work,
Love the longer videos
great song
I finished my ts185 this winter, cool to see someone else building one. My tank had some rust holes, jb weld on the outside, then sand it smooth, easy and has been holding gas no problems.
for now at least...))) it's been a year that i was handed a TS 185, i hope i will start working on it within this Summer. Not sure if i should go for a complete restoration or keep the original colours and just fresh up the bike... what do you think?
Thanks for watching guys! There will be a part two of this episode where I make the tank look good, paint it and then test it with gas. Stay tuned!
Why not use Evaporust they you would not have to deal with the fumes of that acid, that is some pretty caustic and dangerous stuff there.very good video very informative.Cheers
Usually paint stripper works best in warm climate.
I don't have the luxury to buy a new tank because my tank is part of the frame. I am restoring a moped.Hope you where able to complete the restoration of the tank.Cheers
Great job!!!
Awesome, restoring such a hopeless tank.
I’ve had an old German Bike called “Simson”. I’ve enjoyed your video so much dude. Keep it on! Greetings from germany
Well you really took on a Challenge. Good Results. Thanks!
Love the exposed metal look, did the same to my old tank a while back. Keep up the good work!
I am gonna paint it in part 2 of this episode! And put some awesome decals on it
@@GoldGuyRides Niiice, excited to see more
Great song choice!
phosphoric acid is my preference not as harsh on the metal and leaves a nice silvery coating that protects from future rust. It used to be called prep and etch, It can be found at Home Depot they have changed the name to concrete and metal prep but is the same product. Awesome videos. Your hard work will pay off in the end, those vintage bikes sure are fun when done. Refreshing to see someone interested in the salvation of them old souls. Looking forward to hearing the bike roar to life. Good work
Agree on the Phosphoric Acid and 40/60 acid core. I did my tank with it and pressure checked it to make sure there were no leaks. I did not put a liner inside the tank because if they say "ethanol resistant", it is not ethanol proof. After a year or two the liner will get soft and start coming loose from the metal. I just went with the phosphoric coating and run non ethanol gas in my bike.
Well done man
You should use a cutting wheel to cut out the holey sections and weld in some 14 gauge sheet metal with probably a MIG set-up. The 14 gauge is thicker than the tank so you can keep your puddle focused on the sheet metal and avoid blowing out the tank. You’ll have a better looking tank that will last much longer
Awesome friggen work dude u rock
Thanks Mike!
Good lord!!!! Ida just bought a new tank haha. Im very curious to see how it will come out!! Love the vids keeo up the good work👌👌👌👌
Good work
Well done for persevering with that tank when most would have given up as soon as they had seen the inside let alone the bigger holes once the paint had been removed.
Just shows you how bad we are at throwing away stuff that with a little effort and time can STILL Be useable
Keep you vids coming dude
To be honest restoring the tank probably costed more than having a plant making a brand new one.
He would have paid more, but it would have been better for the environment and cheaper to produce in my opinion.
@@C4H10N4O2 Restoring this tank: $45
A better used ts185 gas tank: $100+
@@GoldGuyRides I'm sorry I don't speak english very well, what I tried to say was that restoring the tank was more expensive in materials and worktime than having a plant making one from scratch.
But in the end it would indeed be sold for a lot more than what it costed you to repair it, cause they make a big profit.
A tank like this cost maybe 10 bucks to make and sell for at least 80, more often 100 (talking about more common CG125 tanks).
@@C4H10N4O2 your English is fine! Yes that's true, but they don't make these gas tanks anymore
@@GoldGuyRides Haha, thanks ! yeah the refabricated tanks are only the most widely sold or the one used on cafe racers or scramblers..
i dont see where anyone mentioned using flux. i know its been a while since you did this, but i wanted to mention using flux, especially on steel/iron, help tremendously for soldering. only catch for it is you cant let it get too hot. cheers.
Eyyy! That looks like my current gas tank ( '3')
Thanks for the videos. I am proud of your hard work as well. I would have cleaned the inside with rocks/BBs and water, then sealed the holes with bondo over that whole pitted area.
I didn't know bondo held fuel
No acids!
1part molassis
9part H2O.
2-4 weeks
Lasts 7 months.
Will absolutely remove all rust and will wash off like silt in a creek. I'd then wash out with breack cleaner and coat with the tank stuff.
The blue hairs used to fill bathtubs with to do car doors and fenders... my hair is still blackish.😄
I use a few pounds of square nuts or rough fish tank gravel with vinegar attached to a orbital sander and just keep turning the tank.......works freaking great and on the cheap
That liner he just used flakes and peals I just redid a tank off a 2012 Harley Road King for a customer. Fortunately there is a large opening in these new tanks so you can get your hands inside. I pressure washed the tank than hand sanded the rest of the tank sealer to bare metal the resealed it with an old product called Kream. Save yourself some problems and use the Kream to start with. That other stuff looked old house paint the way it chipped and pealed.
Muriatic acid ? What are we making drugs for the payday gang lol
Try straight white vinegar to soak rusty parts ,it comes off. Takes 24 hours at least, it really works.I have 77 TS250 original on second rebore use it at the cabin super reliable only problem is the cdi like most old bikes, other wise bullet proof same engine as the 185 bigger cyl Great vids
2:06 always gotta smell it twice
Just a tip if you can't find muriadic acid use works toilet bowl cleaner works great as well
enjoyed the video, any tips for making sure the gas/ vapors are all out of the tank before soldering?
Wow man, yeah good on you for the effort. Not sure I would have tried that one. Id be afraid it would leak and burn up the bike. Good job though.
Yess
Great restoration video! I'm looking to do something similar on old metal boat gas tanks so I fell on your video. PS I feel like Beavis and Butthead but anyone realize what was said at 11:20...hihhihi.
great work on a dead and given up bike, cool that u saved it. i am watching the play list, awsome vids,.. subt ya
i mate,use thinner ,solder it melts easer,plus more heat,all the best,bolton uk,keep it up.
The gass tank was dissolved by the acid that's why you have so many holes use viniger next time.Steel can be dissolved with a diluted solution of nitric acid and water. The chemical make up of nitric acid reacts to the iron in steel, producing iron nitrate and hydrogen gas. As this chemical reaction takes place, the steel begins to dissolve.
What should be followed up after vinegar? Do we need ALC after to clean vinegar out?
@@StevenStGelais vinegar can be cleaned out with alcohol or normal gas, you can also use water with soap but u need to dry it out right after cleaning it
Vinegar is still an acid - specifically acetic acid. It’s not as strong (low in pH) as muriatic acid (which is hydrochloric acid) - so it works slower. But the end result is EXACTLY the same. The holing is not the fault of the acid used - its an indication of how much oxidation (ie, rusting) that steel has already gone through. You can’t turn back time on the oxidative process - only arrest the damage already done.
And by the way - in case I wasn’t clear - neither muriatic acid (pool acid, btw) nor acetic acid (vinegar) are nitric acid - which is a different beast entirely.
You are very welcome my friend
The older motorbikes you probably should be careful with the lead paint . Not saying that has lead based paint but I didn't take account for that when I was your age. Better safe than sorry
great job! good lord that would have been far to much for me lmao. maybe brass brazing on steel would work better next time? just a thought.
Probably the only way to fix this tank is by brass brazing. Personally, I'd rather throw it away. If I still had to repair the tank somehow, I'd use a laminating fabric to relaminate the whole tank. Then I would coat the inside with a two-component gasoline-resistant resin (or paint).
Hey mate..I seen you having a bit of a struggle opening that can of sealer a good trick to open easier with the screwdriver is to put in the gap like you did and twist the screwdriver rather than lever it you'll find it much easier 😎
Or use a thing called a paint can opener. free at HomeDepot
Well, no matter the tool (and you are nuts Phil for suggesting the optimal tool) you need to use multiple points of leverage. Then having gone to a comment section on UA-cam, feel like you should end it all for having to make such a comment.
Muy buen video, pienso que sería mejor que nos mostrara detallada mente pasos a paso la reparación de el tanque de gasolina
OH MY GOSH ITS YOU AGAIN I HAVEN'T WATCHED YOU IN FOREVER BECAUSE I FORGOT YOUR NAME AND I JUST HIT A RANDOM VIDEO THIS IS GREAT DAY
I'm glad you found me again!!!
Lead based paint aye? Nice job
If you put a length of chain inside the tank and shake it around before you put the acid in it will help break the big chunks loose
I give you a thumbs up for effort but that tank is Swiss cheese, will be interested to see if it works and if it does how long it lasts. I reckon you'll need a replacement tank.
Shouldn't use acid, especially second time, just making metal thinner and more pinholes!!! Use evaporust and caswell costing. Brazing wouldn't hurt either.
We used Naval Jelly to completely strip metal in the old days, I think aircraft stripper is the same thing.
When you clean an old tank put in some nuts and bolts then you can “stir” it once in a while. Aircraft stripper will completely strip the metal on the outside of the tank.
The acid core solder is what you need for metal repair.
I would have bought a tank on eBay!
Or got out the cut off wheel and welder and fabricated a new tank...????...
That one will definitely leak, probably while you are out on a trail somewhere.
Live the videos, keep em coming!
Por-15 seals up pinholes which is what I used, and I am going to apply at least 3 coats to ensure it doesn't leak.
Thanks for watching Uncle David! I think I am gonna get some aircraft remover for the outside though.
Hmmmm... rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F264040381802
@@mixfixdave7571 that thing still needs cleaned and sealed too, it could have pinholes in it too. There could be a lot of rust hiding under that paint and inside the tank. I'd rather just use the tank that came with the bike if I'm gonna have to clean it and seal it either way
GoldGuy I agree, your current choice makes for great video subject matter too.👍
Hey man, love the videos. We're working on our TS185 simultaneously. I think, however, that you have later than a '75, mine's a 73 which looks just like the 75.
Yeah I think mine is a 1977
@@GoldGuyRides I just bought a 1980 TS185ER which I pick up in a week.
doing some similar things. hopefully not as bad as that. zr400 gas tanks rusty
what is precisely the las souder that you use on it ?
In japan, Pain Strips You!
damn! i hope my tank doesn't look like that. it isn't as bad as that one was on the inside, so mebbe i'll get lucky. if i wind up with holes like that, i may just replace it. thanx!
Polishing a turd, buddy. Good effort though.
Dude, I laughed so hard when i saw this. I have one I need to do. I might film it just to see if it is worse than yours, though I doubt it could be.
All of the above
The lost city of Atlantis? Jimmy Hoffa? Waldo? I know, more electrical tape!!
Look up "lead loading" similar thing but real old school method
New universal tank on eBay, $53. This tank will come back to haunt you when you are far from home someday.
We'll see
Bro your so funny when u swear
Ya had to dissolve all the rust and spiders
Where's the rest of the video, can't see part 2?
I got a whole in my gas tank. For this old 1984 kz 750 kawasaki bike. Is this fixable??
These are holes going through the gas tank BTW.
If you put Solder for cables is no compatible with iron
Why not use jb weld?
I would of just binned it so ten out of ten for effort .
Just subed. Question please . I have a chance to buy 2 identical yamaha 750 cc Shaft drive 1980's and a honda 250 all three for 500 dollars ,canadian. The bikes have been outside for quite some time ,with just tarps over them. Do the yamahas make good cafe racers .....Thanks
Thanks for joining man! Hell yeah that is a good deal do it! Yes yamahas make good cafe racers
@@GoldGuyRides Thanks bro, going to get them tomorrow !!! yahooooo !!! Really like your videos, your really funny. I really cracked up when you said " now i just have to do this gently" Then you start wacking the carb with big ass hammer . Too funny man. Can't wait to see you get that beast started !!!
I love the video. But I want to point out. Muratic a code does 90% of its work in the first 15 minutes. It was not necessary to leave it in that long. And that is a lot of your problem. Great video tho
You need to.make a soldiering paste
Video was uploaded 1 year ago. Try looking his channel first before commenting on a old video
@@sipe254 ok tnx! I done much better job!
Good on you, but go buy another tank
D all the above
Won't the gasoline melt it?
Why do you try metal epoxy filler
Yes many spiders were dissolved
That fuel tank looks as bad as mine.
Throw that tank in the trash. I will go find a good one for ya at the MC junk yard tomorrow.
Throw the whole tank away
At some point you need to look at the effort/risk/reward relationship.
Don't know your location but, there are ts185 tanks in much better shape for a mere 50$ on eBay tight now, and surely even better deals than that if your actually looking.
Hate to rank on someone making serious efforts, but this wasn't worth it
Why must everyone apply what they think is music to every video?
I couldn’t hear what you were saying because it was on mute.
Try to get it street legal
That tank is done! If you wreck the bike the tank will leak gas all over your crocknballs and one spark an your a fire Kroch. I’m afraid for you
Just spend 30$ and get a new or used gas tank
Body solder....
