    That goofy tool you used to apply the bondo actually worked well on the large dents, the rigid straight edge served you well to allow the bondo to fill up the dent

    Awesome bro. Little advise. I would stop using paint thinner as a pre paint solvent. Use isopropyl alcohol. Or a can of spray glass cleaner. Just my .02. Both of these evaporate quickly with no residue.. all love bud

    That was awesome well done. I'm doing a TLR tank at the moment .but I want it left original,It needs the underneath, the bottom doing, so I'm just doing the bottom part you can't see,it was pitted and Rusty . the top of the tank is fine and good

    There are many who would argue that you were correct to prime first, and then fill. Filler straight to bare metal could allow rust to form under the Bondo and cause it to lift. Primer first guarantees all your bare metal stays rust free and should still give the Bondo a great surface to adhere to.

    Awesome paint job! You should be proud of it. A small advice for next time: regarding the template you made for the red part, you can trace it, fold in half and retrace it so it is 100% symmetrical.

    Fantastic job but here's a bit of advice on using acids. Always follow it up with mixed water and BAKING SODA to then neutralize it. VERY important. Also when using strong acid you have to be quick or it not only eats the metal but it changes the chemical make up of it. I put a pair of rusty vise grips in muriatic acid once and the next day after restoring it and using it it BROKE in half ! Imagine what it does to sheet metal.

    Use sandable filler primer after the bondo to sand out all the little imperfections then sealer primer before base coat.
    Dupli-Color makes these products as well.

    It turned out great. That 2 part clear coat in a can is good stuff. I think you could have popped 90 percent of those dents out. I'll take a long tire spoon and cover the end in a few layers of cloth tape to make it a softer edge.... then I go into the tank with the iron and try to pop out the dent from the inside.

    I'm not sure if I should paint over the old coat on my tank now that I've seen you strip it down to bare metal. I've sanded it down to a smooth surface. However, I'm not sure whether I should just strip the paint or prime it as it is and then apply the base coat.

    Dude that is a shit serious awesome resto job on that tank. I was looking at it being hyper critical but you know what? Factory Honda tanks aren't better than yours. At least not classic ones like that. I'm thinking about sending you 12 of my tanks to restore! Well done, can't wait to see the rest of the bike.

    Hello GG love your videos. I have three MTs. A 125 and two 250s. The 125 is a gem, but I feel you pain with the 250! I can’t get one of them to run right and the other is a future project. The question I have for you is when you coated your tank with POR15, did you have to remove the petcock? Thank you. Your fan Dave.

    Do you still have the Captain America Honda? That clear coat would protect that distressed paint job on the bike. That is if it comes in a matt or semi gloss finish. The tank does look brand new. Great job!!

    I have a question : when you use the muriatic acid, do you leave the fuel tap on the tank? Because it's aluminum and muriatic acid can dissolve it.

    • @GoldGuyRides
      @GoldGuyRides  Рік тому

      I only leave the fuel tap on if I plan on replacing it anyways. If it's a new one then cut a rectangle out of steel and tighten it on with some gasket sealant and send it. The acid will dissolve the petcock btw.

    I worked in a body shop for years and was taught that a motorcycle tank should always be sprayed in the orientation that it will sit when on the bike. Rattle cans especially should not be sprayed up and down, they should be sprayed side to side for smooth coverage.
