  • Fuel tank repair with solder.
The Fuel tank in a rotary hoe had some corrosion holes and wasn't holding fuel, using a soldering rod 40% Tin -60% Lead, I fixed the holes, works great now.
Take care!!! with tank, thoroughly clean out the fuel before applying a flame to it..., and be aware that fumes from rod can be harmful.

Seems this is your first time doing this. And what about giving precautions about making sure there is no gas residue in the tank?

Is there much or less rick using a iron instead of a torch? I have a pin hole in my metal tank as well. Trying to figure out the best way to do this. I’ve been using a sheet of duct tape to get me by for each single use. Then take it off and re apply for my next mow. Its annoying but for a couple hours the duct tape works fine. Just a cheap 60$ brigs push mower i picked up but i’d like to patch it permanently if i can

Possibly the luckiest soldering I've ever seen! For the first timers the whole concept of soldering is to put paste on the place you want soldered and heat that, not the solder. Once the place is hot enough tip the solder on it, it will melt as needed. Before you do any heating of a fuel container you must remove any potential of an explosion due to residual fuel vapors! And if you make a video do not play music as it is very distracting!

Hey, where did you buy that soldering rod. I want to give this a shot on an old smudge pot I have.

You know that tank could have very easily blown up right?

If you look at the paint removal, there's been a lot of preparation prior to soldering. He's also very handy with the soldering skill, so no worries about this.

@@jimwoods9551 Famous last words. There should ALWAYS be substantial warnings and precautions before showing any heat related repairs to gas tanks. Exterior prep work and soldering skills have NOTHTING to do with the safety factor!! My buddy washed his three times and it still blew while he was working on it. Fortunately the size of the openings mitigated the explosion and the tank did not split. He figure all the fumes were now burned out so he proceeded...and it blew again. He filled it water like he knew he should have and finished the job. DON'T try this on a gas tank unless you know what you are doing.

@@FisherCatProductions I used lighter fluid as my first rinse then 70 percent rubbing alcohol and sloshed it around for both no issues but I also left the cap off and placed the tank upside down on a hollow concrete block to allow any explosion which its more of a rocket engine effect not an explosion another way is to use alcohol to rinse then to light it this poses a higher risk but the going theory is to have the fuel to burn on your terms and not later unexpectedly their is no safe way of doing this their is some amount of risk now after a good cleaning if you do your repair but still have a leak the risk after a second cleaning is greatly reduced as the issue is lacquered gasoline that does not rinse out easily my tank did not any build up so the risk was minimal

@@tomsims7868 Pardon my intrusion, but would you do this to a 16 gallon Steel gas tank for a car?
I've heard that people have stuffed the tank with something (ground charcoal)? to give an extra measure of not exploding while welding and or soldering?
I'm asking cuz I have a hole in my gas tank, I need to repair cuz I can't get another tank.
      Thanks.
I appreciate your video and your choice of music, good job!

@@fubarlife7776 I think the key factor is volume I had a much smaller tank but the same protocols would work to clean it just need more alcohol and you would need to rinse a few more times then any explosion would be a poof out fill hole so keep that facing down or directed up and away with a thin pipe its not a huge risk if done right I would say soldering is less of a risk then welding and the charcoal idea seems like it would reduce the risk even further now welding onto a freshly emptied tank bad idea one could also fill the tank with argon or CO2 options exist I used what I had and it worked and I would do it again a bigger tank would change things slightly and that does not invalidate my protocols for my small 1 quart tank
