Interesting point about too wet/root rot. I tried growing gardenias inside for about a dozen years and had bad luck with them. I was at a friend's house about ten years ago and saw their blooming, healthy gardenias and asked them how they kept them so healthy. They told me to try to over-water them. They kept them in a tray that was fill;ed with water. I went out and bought a new plant and kept it wet and it bloomed like crazy, usually in June or July. I took cuttings and rooted them and gave them to friends, telling them to keep them wet. They've all done well except for one friend who let theirs dry out.
I've since re-potted mine and I'm about to propagate new cuttings. Mine stays in a tray that is always filled with water and I mist the plant several times a day.

joemac356 , that’s a pain in the neck if you have to mist them several times a day.

I did the opposite. I put the plant in direct sunlight and water it everyday, I try to keep the soil moist. The plant grew very big very quick and it likes to blossom at night when the humidity kicks up. Also, my leaves on my plant are very dark compared to yours.

@@ladyEnchantressGarden Yes but in small amounts once per week I use the miracle grow mix for flowering, the purple box. I ready a gallon mixture and spray about a quarter cup on the soil. Doesn't seem like much but it helps keep the plant nice and green with a lot of blossoms. I do this on my Hibiscus plants and it helps a lot too.

I agree with you. In my tropical climate - I tend to keep gardenias in nearly full sun all day long, never let them dry out- and they do extremely well. I think underwatering (coupled with over fertilizing) is also a frequent cause of chlorosis. In hot climates over watering doesn’t cause root rot since the plant seems to take it up/soil dries up so quickly

Hi there! Any suggestions on things that I can spray on a Gardenia to keep a pesky cat from gnawing on the leaves AND are safe for both plant and cat? Thanks for any suggestions!

Every article I have read on Gardenia says it wants to stay moist, and everyone says water it as soon as the surface gets dry (when outdoors in a pot) in the spring & summer,
but in fall, wait until the top one inch is dry. Exactly how dry should we let them get before watering when it's indoors? How dry should we let it get before watering when it's outdoors
    in a pot?

I was given a gardenia plant and it looked like it was root bound. I didn't realize how incredibly rootbound it was. When I transplanted I couldn't really loosen many of the roots and I was afraid if I did too much I would kill it. now it's in a pot and I put new soil in but basically it still has that root bound center. When I put a moisture meter into that part of the plant it's always dry so I'm wondering if you have any suggestions about how I can loosen that or what else I need to do. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi, I was given a blooming one as well. It was horribly root bound, so I loosened the roots one by one and repotted in a larger pot 5 weeks ago. It has grown a lot and has a few buds on it. I just bought Miracid for it. I researched and everyone swears by this fertilizer. It's too early to repot but I think yours is way too root bound to be very happy. Not sure if you should repot it now. Good luck with it.

Hello I bought gardenia in a pot for indoor and it is too bushy as much as looking inside the plant and checking it the soil is wet or dry is difficult. I feel the plant would suffer from too much density. What should I do?

    Hello John,
I have a large Gardenia plant (Small tree like), outside, approximately 35 years old. in the past year it has been declining. Losing leaves from underneath. The leaves are also turning lighter green with the veins a little darker. Another observation is it appears not to be able to hold new buds. Before the buds can reach a blooming stage they fall off. Nothing has be changed around the plant or other conditions identified with exception to noticing spider mites 6 months ago which were immediately eliminated with Dawn. Do you have any suggestions. Central, West Coast Florida. Thank you//Doug

We had bought a healthy and lush gardenia and now it's dying. Half of its leaves had fallen off. I plan to put it outside where it will get lots of sun and not overwater it. Any suggestions?

Im a big fan of gardenia, but they seem to be very fragile. I have pot gardenia, about a feet high with decent girth on the stem.
Problem is the foliage instead of being green and glossy is yellow , like the chlorosis you mentioned in your video. what is the root cause ? OVER or UNDER Watering ? In india here we have temparatures ranging from 10deg C to 25 deg C this time of the year . I water my Gardenia once in 2 days. Direct sunlight is available for 3 /4 hours a day .. Can you advise ?
