I just got a small struggling gardenia from the grocery store for only $2.50! Im very excited ! Aside from one wilty cutting out of the few its pretty healthy 💚 my mum had one when i was growing up and i LOVE the smell
This is my 9th time getting one, the last one I got lasted the longest since I had it inside the house longer, I thought she was ready to live outside and it started getting sick and nothing I did worked to get her healthy. So i´m gonna treat it as an indoor plant like you said, I just can´t live without their frangrance!
Can you please do a video on pruning, repotting, soil acidity, propagation for gardenias. I love these plants but they keep dying and I feel really bad. I live in the UK and we don’t have the best of weathers. My grandmother had one in her garden (in Srilanka), and it was about 2m in height with a thick trunk. The blossoms were so fragrant, it smelt heavenly mixed in the evening salty sea breeze. I would love to successfully grow one indoors in loving memory of my late grandmother.
Just purchased a 10" Gardenia and searched for how to care for it, as I haven't been successful before. Glad I found you. Great video and a ton of information and science.
I love gardenias and haven't even tried growing them for a long time because they kept dying. Thank you for giving me these tips! I'm going to try again!
Thank you thank you thank you! This is the best instruction and explanation on taking care of gardenia! Every point is right on the spot! subscribed right away
My Gardenia Bush and one of the Standards looks really good now that I finally got my PH right. I live in zone 6, and I have kept them on my patio, moving them under the eaves of my balcony when it rained - until I got an outdoor umbrella. I keep the umbrella open to provide them with indirect light, and they seem to do really well with it. When I first got them from Home Depot, they were not in good shape. The soil was the wrong PH and I kept getting yellow leaves, which would then die and fall off. Once I got the PH right, the leaves are doing great. I have them in a large enough pot that all I have to do is water them well (with well draining soil) and then let them be until the soil starts to get dry. If I let them dry out too much, the leaves will dry out and start to die. The temperatures were definitely above 62 degrees on my patio this summer, but they did bloom. I'm guessing that's because they had cooler temps in the spring, outdoors at Home Depot. So cooler temps for the buds to form, but then they were fine on the patio for the summer. I think they will probably form buds in the spring if I put them outdoors when the temps are closer to what you are talking about. The Gardenias we have are hardy to 10 degrees F but I thought I would keep them in pots and bring them indoors for winter because I am not convinced the temps won't get colder than this, and I worry it would kill them. I don't get a ton of sun in my apartment, so I will be giving them supplemental light over the winter and pray they do ok. Although you say these plants do better indoors, I'm actually more nervous about having to overwinter them inside, as I don't know how well they will do once I have them in a lower light environment, and in cooler temps than they have been in all summer.
I bought my first Gardenia plant a couple of days ago. I love the fragrance. You directions are easy to follow. I live in zone 3. My plant will not be outside. She is loaded with buds. I am excited to see them open. You have eased my anxiety. Thank you!!
Nice video. Good info, nicely presented. I like your specificity on the temperature and humidity. Gardenia’s need acidic soil. What is your preference on the NPK numbers? I just bought a nice Gardenia and placed in a nice pot with Dr. Earth’s organic fertilizer for acidic plants. I planted it about a week ago. The PH readings are still in the high 6/low 7 range. What is your favorite way to increase the Gardenia’s acidity? I’ve heard used coffee grounds and blood meal are good choices. Do you have a preference? Thanks in advance.
I absolutely loved your video. I have killed more gardenias than I can count but I keep on trying. Hopefully with your information this next time will be a success. Can you please share information about when and how to prune a gardenia? The one I bought this spring surprisingly is still alive but it’s getting very leggy, I just brought it in from being outdoors But all the information I received says to prune it after flowering but I feel that I should do it now. Would you please do a video to respond to this? Thank you
So I have a question. I ordered a bush online and it came here looking healthy. There are no flowers, which is fine but all the leaves look green and I don't see any pests. I have it sitting in a South facing window and I have been misting them every morning. I've been watering a little inconsistently because it seems like I need to water daily. I noticed it's leaves are turning yellow. The leaves have yellow veins and spotted green colours. Its a little root bound so I was wondering what soil you use to transplant it? I was really hoping not to change anything but it seems like I might have to.
Great video. I have just gotten a gardenia like yours in the video and I have been checking the water every two days and having fine luck. My hubby insists it's dry every day and waters it. :( Now I have large buds ready to bloom but falling off and dead leaves and yellowing leaves. What do I do? :-( Thank you for any assist. It is an in the house plant and will be as we are in the Pacific North West and lots of gray and cold dreary weather.
Thank you for the informations I really loved it . I know nothing about plants and I started to plant gardenia at home because I live in Denmark and it’s a cold weather here. So your video helped me a lot . Thank you again for sharing . I would ask you to show us how you take care of it and how much you water it and fertilise it. God bless you dear 🙏🏻❤️🌺
I am in zone 6 and I had my gardenia outdoors under an umbrella with only morning sun all summer with no problems. I had a water fountain nearby and did not give them any extra humidity and they did great.. I accidentally gave two of them direct sun for a few days, and then even though I moved them back under the umbrella, both of them proceeded to dry up more and more until they both look dead. The third Standard looked amazing until after I brought it indoors, and even though I have been misting them every day, and not overwatering, the standard and the bush that both looked amazing, suddenly started looking drab, and leaves began to turn partly brown and dried up. The bush now looks almost dead, except for one set of leaves on the bottom of one branch and a few leaves at the top. The Standard now looks drab, and the leaves are starting to dry out even though it has been kept moist most of the time - not wet. I don't understand what is happening. The standard looked GREAT all summer, and now it's drying up and the leaves look dull! I have not treated it differently than when it was outdoors. I give it light all day, not in the direct sun , but indirect, with supplemental light for at least 12 hours because I don't get sunlight all day in my house due to a balcony causing premature shade. I am so frustrated because the bush and the standard looked amazing all summer. The bush started showing problems not long before it was time to take them indoors. The standard looked great until after I took it in, but they both started drying out just like the ones that got too much sun. Can someone PLEASE tell me how and when to water them? I can't tell by sticking my finger in the soil whether it's dry enough to water. I read that Gardenias like to stay moist but not waterlogged, not wet. I try to water them when the soil looks like it's getting dry, where it doesn't feel wet , but dryer than "moist",.... I don't trust my water- moisture=PH meter anymore because it said the soil was wet when it clearly was not. I am at my wits end trying to figure out where I went wrong when at least the bush and one standard looked amazing most of the summer and then suddenly bam, they start to dry up.
I’m in 7a and have successfully overwintered gardenia frost proof. This year, I purchased Swan Wueen gardenia, which is hardy to zero degrees, and more closely resembled the tropical indoor gardenia.
I brought home a nice healthy gardenia but it's since developed chlorosis. I've added an iron supplement and have been trying to lower the ph of the soil, too, since it's a bit higher than what is recommended for a gardenia but I haven't seen any progress after about a week. Is my little buddy doomed or can we still recover?
I seem to be the queen of water and going to try the finger test first! I laughed when I saw these in the PNW toward the end of summer...no way we get warm enough at night long enough for them to bloom...so they were all on clearance for $1...so trying again.
When I first received my Gardenia 4 years ago from my brother at my husband's funeral it was the size of the one you are showing. I have since transplanted it twice and it is about 3 1/2' wide and 3' tall. Covered in blooms. I keep it indoors over Winter and move outdoors when the weather warms. It is extremely healthy has never had any problems. I live in southern Oklahoma. My question is can I plant it outdoors?
Hi, I am a newbie to gardening and someone at Nations mississauga sold me a gardenia when I asked for a jasmine plant. So turns out now I have a gardenia. I re potted it and have it indoors. But the plant does not have any buds. How long before I can expect buds on it? Also could you please suggest a fertilizer that that I could buy in store. Thanks in advance.
I've had mine for a week and the flowers are turning yellow and brown round the edges. What could need adjusting? I water it about every 3 days, and use a humidifier. It's at a windowsill facing north so it gets afternoon sun. It's summer here in London UK, zone 9
I’m wondering if I need to repot the plant. Is the only way to shift it out of it nursery pot to look at the roots? Or can I tell by looking at the stems or leaves ? My gardenia is wilting right now and I found one inch worm
I got my Gardenia a year ago on sale from Walmart. It had aphids or something when I bought it. I kept spraying it with Neem Oil. It survived a year but now the leaves are wilting drooping lately and am not sure why or what is causing it to do that….
Those overnight temps are really low for indoors. We don't go below 68. If it would be okay outside in warmer zones, does it really need that low of temps at night?
🌼 I love Gardenia Flower, specially with white flowers . I also use Creed - Fleurs de Gardenia (A masterpiece fragrance based on Gardenia) . Excellent Information . You are beautiful & handsome . You have a lovely job . Good Luck 🌼👍 (I also wanted to know where this farm is located ?)
i purchased my first grdenia and i noticed that the pot had three gardeias in one pot. I decided to repot the gardenia, however I did the unthinkable out of ignorance....I exposed its roots completely and washed them with water, as I wanted to separate them from the roots of the other Gardenias....sure enough, two dies and one has been struggling for 2 months now :( I still have hope, though I know that I have only a short time-window to work with..... I have now only a few leaves left, green, but sick.... please help me.....
Can you show us a video of you pruning that gardenia and how it looks like that? Is it a young gardenia or you pruned it like that (this question is so all over the place sorry)
Hi, could you please help me with the size of the pot I can repot my plant? I bought it last summer and I feel it's ready to be repotted. But at the garden centre I was told I can only go 1 size up. So if I had 13cm depth pot, I can only go 15cm. I bought it, but now I look at the think it might be too small?
I can't believe gardenia can be kept indoor like other indoor plants I bought more than 40 gardenia plants during 5 years and all of them died very soon unlike other plants like pothos or rubber plant and when I decided to plant one gardenia outside , surprise surprise, it is still alive and became bigger
Hello, I bought a Gardenia in pot for in door here in Germany and I keep it next to the window and it gets 2/3 hours sun in the sunny days but it is very unhappy and have a lot of problems. first the leaves where drying and falling so I made sure that the soil is always moist. Now some leaves below (not the ones that get the sun) is turning orange. I think it needs iron so I bought iron and gave it to it. after that the new bud where white but it did not open and started to get black and it died. I really do not know what to do but I think it is dying 😰
I received a gardenia as a gift and unfortunately, it's had some issues. Most of the leaves are dead, and the blooms are gone. But the roots look good, the branches are green, and it still has a few leaves. I'm hoping I can save it.
I bought a beautiful big gardenia plant and I replanted it in bigger pot . It's in outside but not in direct sun light ,after a week all buds droop down then next day it perked up. Now most of the leaves turn yellow. How do save my gardenia
I bought a small gardenia tree this weekend and it had one flower bloomed but already the flower is welted and the leaves are welting too … not sure what I’m doing wrong but I did repot it to a slightly bigger pot and it’s sitting on direct light, I watered it .. I don’t know what else to do 😔
I live in zone 6, was successful to keep 1 out of 2 through the winter. Last summer both plants bloomed only 2 or 3 flowers during summer. Is that normal?
Well, I think I was setup for failure from the get go. I got one as a gift in the middle of a freezing day, and of course I didn’t cover it to get it to the car. I would have never imagine that a plant would be that delicate to carry around for a few minutes in the cold. I don’t know why people come up with this type of gift ideas for me 😣 I have tones of plants that are mostly healthy and pest free, and now I got this. Great 😒
Thank you for all of your advice, can you please share a link or the name again of the fertilizer you suggested? I just bought my first gardenia home today! Thanks again.
Can u please guide, how to get rid of white ants in potting soil of indoor plants? I feel they are causing root rotting. I checked potting soil and found white tiny insects like termites
I love gardenias and just bought one without knowing how difficult it is to take care of 😭 I didn’t know any of this especially checking the bottom before buying and I just checked and it has what seems like spider webs all over the bottom so I don’t know what I can do in this case
Hlw, Don't you need to prune a gardania. Just trim them and after trimming use fungicide both in soil and plant. This plant is so sensitive. Never prune it to hard coz that will develop 'die back'. 😊
I keep trying in southern California's hot arid climate and alkali soil . No matter how much I try to swing its makeup the other way and how much amendments I add , my once beautiful gardenia plant I bring home dies . I guess it's from a childhood memory of my mother ( she passed a few years ago ) and aunts wearing gardenias in their hair on memorial day . In fact a,l the women in that part of Texas did in memory of those who served and didn't return .
omg this is the most dramatic plant ever.. funny the guy who sold it to me gave me all these tips for the other stuff I bought which is flourishing, but not a word about this one that I've been fighting to keep alive for months and hasn't even blossomed once 😂😂
I had bud drop on mine but it’s outdoors I figured out it was to hot and dry I’ve since been giving it more water and it’s full of healthy buds 🙂 I’d have it inside if it wasn’t for my kitties gardenia is toxic for them 😕
Elizabeth Marks-Graham I just took my gardenia in. I live in NJ. I had no idea gardenia is toxic to cats. I put in the office with the door closed but they are curious because it was outside
I have owned one before and never last to me after few mo died. Just bought one again and watered once in a while. Only now I noticed the leaves are all down seems dying😭
I just got a small struggling gardenia from the grocery store for only $2.50! Im very excited ! Aside from one wilty cutting out of the few its pretty healthy 💚 my mum had one when i was growing up and i LOVE the smell

Thanks. We’ve never been able to grow gardenias for more than a few months indoors. Impulse buys for us but we keep buying and they keep dying.
Danielle hugged her gardenia...love it. Thanks
I love gardenias and haven't even tried growing them for a long time because they kept dying. Thank you for giving me these tips! I'm going to try again!

I’m in 7a and have successfully overwintered gardenia frost proof. This year, I purchased Swan Wueen gardenia, which is hardy to zero degrees, and more closely resembled the tropical indoor gardenia.
I am in seven Day also. How did you successfully overwintering gardenia?
I brought home a nice healthy gardenia but it's since developed chlorosis. I've added an iron supplement and have been trying to lower the ph of the soil, too, since it's a bit higher than what is recommended for a gardenia but I haven't seen any progress after about a week. Is my little buddy doomed or can we still recover?

Good info😊
Thanks! I've killed one but with all those beautiful blooms I think I'll try again!
Yes! Totally worth another try! She is a bit of a diva - but so worth the extra effort!
Hi Daniel, what kind of media do you use to repot gardenia plant?
When I first received my Gardenia 4 years ago from my brother at my husband's funeral it was the size of the one you are showing. I have since transplanted it twice and it is about 3 1/2' wide and 3' tall. Covered in blooms. I keep it indoors over Winter and move outdoors when the weather warms. It is extremely healthy has never had any problems. I live in southern Oklahoma. My question is can I plant it outdoors?
they're sensitive to frost or cold temperature and drafts. if your place is free from cold winds and frost, then yes
Please clone it and plant the clone 🌱
Do you recommend misting your gardenia?
Hi, I am a newbie to gardening and someone at Nations mississauga sold me a gardenia when I asked for a jasmine plant. So turns out now I have a gardenia. I re potted it and have it indoors. But the plant does not have any buds. How long before I can expect buds on it? Also could you please suggest a fertilizer that that I could buy in store. Thanks in advance.
In photography we like "North light" - it's bright, but soft and indirect. Being near north windows that are bright might be good.
I've had mine for a week and the flowers are turning yellow and brown round the edges. What could need adjusting? I water it about every 3 days, and use a humidifier. It's at a windowsill facing north so it gets afternoon sun. It's summer here in London UK, zone 9
I bought this plant last year ,its healthy but not bloomed yet. Can you please help to suggest anything fertilizer or tips to get them bloom?
Hi. I have two of these gardenias but they don’t keep their blooms. What do you recommend to do. I live in southern California. Thanks 🙏
I’m wondering if I need to repot the plant. Is the only way to shift it out of it nursery pot to look at the roots? Or can I tell by looking at the stems or leaves ? My gardenia is wilting right now and I found one inch worm
when using a humidifier does it matter if it is cool or warm mist?
I got my Gardenia a year ago on sale from Walmart. It had aphids or something when I bought it. I kept spraying it with Neem Oil. It survived a year but now the leaves are wilting drooping lately and am not sure why or what is causing it to do that….

Can you show us a video of you pruning that gardenia and how it looks like that? Is it a young gardenia or you pruned it like that (this question is so all over the place sorry)
You looks like gardenia.so sweet. where can get yellow gardenia. I never seen the yellow color.
Thank you for the info. How do you keep your Gardenia house plant from out growing it’s pot? Do you eventually need to plant it in the garden?
Pruning roots and stems.
I just got a 6” gardenia yesterday. When watered, all the water just comes out. Now the leaves are drooping. What could be the issue? Thanks
what's called again?.....=p that plants flowers smell amazing
Hi, could you please help me with the size of the pot I can repot my plant? I bought it last summer and I feel it's ready to be repotted. But at the garden centre I was told I can only go 1 size up. Can I ask how you test the PH for your potted gardenia? I have a PH meter but it isn't working
Excellent
I just got myself a gardenia last week, it was doing great but the last 3 days the leaves started wilting and it keeps getting worse. Any advice?

this is a magnet for pests in my area. which is so sad because I love the flowers. attracts way too many spider mites that infected my roses :(
I live in zone 6, was successful to keep 1 out of 2 through the winter. Last summer both plants bloomed only 2 or 3 flowers during summer. Is that normal?
Hi! I was given an outdoor Gardenia plant but I live in an apartment.
Is there any chance that this plant will survive?
Thank you
Well, I think I was setup for failure from the get go. I got one as a gift in the middle of a freezing day, and of course I didn’t cover it to get it to the car. I would have never imagine that a plant would be that delicate to carry around for a few minutes in the cold. I don’t know why people come up with this type of gift ideas for me 😣
I have tones of plants that are mostly healthy and pest free, and now I got this. Great 😒
How will I know when to repot my gardenia I just purchased? And how much larger should the pot be?
what is fertilizer and what is the growing season
I was advised to use Azalea/Camillia fertilizer at half strength. I found some at 10-8-6. How do I make it half strength?
Thank you😊
Mine's outside and I've never had any problems with mine
Mine is pretty much dead any tips to relive it? Or it’s over now?
Thank you for all of your advice, can you please share a link or the name again of the fertilizer you suggested? I just bought my first gardenia home today! Thanks again.

Can u please guide, how to get rid of white ants in potting soil of indoor plants? I feel they are causing root rotting. I checked potting soil and found white tiny insects like termites
Does snake plant flower smell good..?
I love gardenias and just bought one without knowing how difficult it is to take care of 😭 I didn’t know any of this especially checking the bottom before buying and I just checked and it has what seems like spider webs all over the bottom so I don’t know what I can do in this case
Probably just mycelium..Dont panic its you friend and one of natures miracles..
Hi Danielle Can you please explain how to prune a gardenia? After the flowers bloom they turn yellow and die...what do you do?
Hlw,
Don't you need to prune a gardania. Just trim them and after trimming use fungicide both in soil and plant. This plant is so sensitive. Never prune it to hard coz that will develop 'die back'. 😊
How is your gardenia doing, do you still have her?
Hello, Danielle! Your gardenia is beautiful. What is her ID?
Do we prune off spent blooms and exactly how or just leave them? No one seems to offer this information on gardenias.
Yes u prune off dead flowers or your plant will waste energy making seeds.
Nice gardenia
How do you keep a gardenia at 60-62 degrees at night? Any tips or tricks?
Can please you share a link for a good soil to use for the Gardenia? Thank you!!
Did you found out what soil? It's warm here.

I’d have it inside if it wasn’t for my kitties gardenia is toxic for them 😕
Elizabeth Marks-Graham I just took my gardenia in. I live in NJ. I had no idea gardenia is toxic to cats. I put in the office with the door closed but they are curious because it was outside
