    Who doesn’t love a gardenia in bloom? Another wonderfully fragrant blooming tree for South Florida is the Ylang Ylang tree. It is intoxicating! Speaking of intoxicating…… where is that precious child with Aunt Bonny’s refresher Cosmo!?!?!?? Children these day!

    Hi, I just discovered your channel and thank you so much for your detailed video!! Thanks you!
    I have been pining over a Gardenia Tree which looks like a topiary. I bought at a garden center about 2 mos ago. I thought I did a fairly descent dive into the Gardenia needs. I repotted it in a moisture control potting mix and after a couple of weeks added some acidic fertilizer ganuals. My garden faces south and I placed the gardenia where it would get morning and afternoon sun. It was lovely and gave me quite a few fragrant lovely blooms!
    Suddenly one day all the healthy deep green leaves were brown, drooping and crispy. It was watered about 2x’s a week.
    I am still in shock. I can’t understand what happened. I asked many gardening friends what they thought and the general consensus was, don’t give up on it!
    Well, I plucked the brown crispy leave off and snipped the thinner branches and watered it and nothing is happening. Where I snipped the branches there was green centers so I was hopeful, but now, not so much.
    I am in zone 9-9b Tampa Bay area.
    I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thank you for your attention!

      Hi there. I am sorry to hear about your gardenia. Can you tell me more about the granular fertilizer. Sometimes plants can shocked out if too much fertilizer ( concentrations) gets into roots. Also does your plant require 2x week watering ? That may be a bit too much water unless she is in a really hot location or in a tera cotta pot😀🪴

    • @deeb66
      @deeb66 Рік тому

      @@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN Hi, the granular fertilizer is azalea/gardenia I believe 4-3-4. I thought about pulling the gardenia out of the current pot and repotting in new soil, but I’m am afraid to disturb it. It just look like brown twigs now that I have removed all the burnt leaves. Should I consider this a lesson learned and move on, or do you think I may be able to bring it back to life?
      Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and time! Hugs, Dee

      If your Gardenia has some flexibility to stems, she might still be alive, You can try cutting a small branch and look on the stem on end at cut section to see if you see any "green" ring, if yes, that will tell you she is still alive. Hope this helps.😀🪴

      @@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN Hello again Michael, while I was at work today, my husband cut a stem and found green in the center. He then removed the gardenia from the pot and found what he described as something strange with the root ball. He said there were two root balls, one on top of the other but connected. He didn’t think of taking a picture for me.
      He cleaned the pot and repotted the gardenia with new potting soil, and gave it a good watering. What do you think?
      I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate your advice.
      I hope you are have a great day and week!!

    So much great info!! Thank you! I would like your advice about placement for my newly acquired Miami supreme standard. My house faces north, therefore no direct sun in winter for least 6 feet out of the foundation, but full sun 8+ hours spring through fall. Zone 9B Orlando. . I'd love it near the door but I'm not sure it will thrive given these conditions. Having said that should I keep it in a large pot instead of planting? or find a different spot in the backyard near our porch which faces south and is full sun year round? Thank you in advance!! 🙂

    • @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
      @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN  Рік тому +1

      Hi!, I think she will do ok, my older sister Amy has her ‘Aimee’ on north side about 8’ away from foundation (2 story home) and her gardenia is doing fine, but if you want to be absolutely sure, you could try placing her in a pot for the first year on north side, If she does well in the pot after a year, then you can either plant her there, or if not, move her where she can get more sun. Hope this helps. 😀🪴

    Un gran abrazo desde España, soy otro loco de las gardenias pero tengo muy mala suerte con ellas, no me duran más de 3 meses, ge probado muchas cosas de las que recomiendan pero no me funcionan, donde vivo el sol es muy fuerte y los veranos son muy secos, sin humedad, además el agua contiene mucha cal, lo dicho.. muy buen video y que disfrutéis del maravilloso olor de estas flores.

      Hola ! España es un país tan hermoso. Madrid, Sevilla, Toledo, Saragoza...todos, LINDO! y lamento que tu gardenia no crezca bien. ¿Quizás podrías intentar usar agua de lluvia para reducir el alto ph de la cal en el agua local? El agua de lluvia tiene un ph ligeramente ácido y eso podría ayudar a que su gardenia absorba mejor los nutrientes del suelo. ¡Espero que esto ayude, Caio! 😀🪴

    • @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN

      Hi there, I am sorry that your gardenia is not giving you flowers. Maybe your soil is iron locked. It can happen when your soil has high ph. You can try an acid loving fertilizer ( use 1/2 strenght at first) to help reduce your soils ph and hopefully your gardenia will begin to bring in the iron and get stronger. And a stronger plant = more flowers.😀🪴

      Hi, As a general rule, I like to add grdenias near the SE corner of a home so prevailing breezes pict up the scent ( when she is flowering) and bring it towards the house. Hope this helps.😀🪴

      Would that hold true for my house that's located about 7 blocks from the ocean? Or would the salt be too much in a SE corner? I could plant it behind a concrete block wall on the SE side.

    Is it true that there are soil nematodes that kill gardenias if they are not “grafted”? I’m in zone 10a.

    • @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
      @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN  23 дні тому

      Hi there. Maybe not kill, but can degrade gardenia health. It is better to have grafted to G. Thunbergii root stcok, we have found. Those grafted gardenias do better against pests( nematodes) and tend to flower bigger & more robustly when grafted. Hope this helps😀🪴

      Hi, as far as I know, gardenia’s do not repel mosquitos unfortunately. Lemongrass however, can repel mosquito’s it has citronella oils within the plant, a natural mosquito replant! And lemongrass has Devine scent when you crush the leaves! Maybe you could add some lemongrass shrubs to your gardenia garden to help keep mosquitos away. Hope this helps.😀🪴

      My sister Bonny is no shrinking violet, trust me. If she wanted to say something during the video, she would have shoved me aside and spoke up ( for example, watch our bougainvillea video where she literally mocks me🤣. Bonny tends to be more quiet on cam (unlike my older sister Amy who lovvvves talking in our garden videos). And our whole big Irish family talks over each other all-the-time, this is nothing new, its just who we are and how we roll. 😀🪴
