I could hear rod knock every time it was pushed hard on a right hand corner for a long time before it blew. Seems to me lateral G caused oil starvation and bearing failure. When you get a replacement engine make your own baffle plates (anti-surge) for the sump.
Despite what happened on track, perhaps my favourite car this entire year ive seen you drive. Nobody would think of a good ol' Volvo 240 to take on track but with a bit of parts and some tuning they are quite capable. My dad in the past owned bunch of RWD turbo charged Volvos and im quite sad I wasn't even born when he had them and never had the opportunity to experience them. One thing for sure tho, this car does not need body-cage to keep all occupants safe so theres that.
Its crazy that the engine blew, threw out bits from the bottom end, and still didn't loose much (if any) oil, really curious how that worked?! Definitely lucky that it didn't make a mess on the track.
my idea is that the oil got too hot and stopped giving the bearings enough lubrication since he decided to not run the original oil cooler mounted on the turbo variant of these engines, the oil filter seems to be a cheap "Biltema" filter too which is like Ebay quality.
One of the most exciting videos in my opinion! Fast sportscars are cool, but this one beautifully shows the driver's skillset on the track. Would be great to have an additional camera following the car, from the outside this must have been SCARY to watch 🙂
These engines cost like 400 bucks and can be found any day of the week. I've replaced everything but the engine internals on mine and virtually nothing has been cost prohibitive or difficult to do
Ive been working with volvo 8v engines all my life, and its correct. Many Times engine broke Down during trackday, i collected a new one and rebuilt it same night, and drove again next Day, for almost no money at all, nomather where in swedwn you are, you never have to drive more than 30 min to pick up a used engine. Actually you can hear the bearing nock in first brake/turn in, suprprised it worked so long time after that. He should have overfilled engine atleast 1 litre for this kind of high rpm driving😂😂 The stock MAX level on the dipstick is a guidline for those elderly People never revving it past 3000rpm 😂😂😂
@@knotannrkpg The rattle that is heard from the start is propably the fan or something else resonating. The owner says the knocking is the fan at first also.
@@MrAsddasdasda maybe, but I doubt it, since the original visco-fan and plastic is removed the electric fan probobly isnt spinning at such high speed/airflow. And this is the kind of noice b23/230@)s are making due to oil-starvation during hard brake at high rpms. All Volvos used for on track have normally a upgrade drysump pump or heavymodificated oilpan and crankcase ventilation/catchcansystems that this engine seem to not have. Anyway, i bet there is a new enginge in it already
I wonder if oil starvation in the long corners contributed to the engine failure? Thumbs up for a great video and going above and beyond to help out a fellow gear head.
@@vasek987 I know nothing about Volvo engines, but have built some old Datsun engines for road racing. Seems like a windage tray in the oil pan could be a potential easy fix.
But also you could hear that noise that the owner insisted was the fan from the get go. I'd say it had a dodgy rod bearing from the beginning and that drive spun it completely and the rod cap or big end smashed through the block. Unfortunate but inevitable.
One of the most fun recent laps! She still ran as well! Recently blew a hole out of both sides of my block due to a stuck open injector :( Still drove me home, but feel your pain!
That’s so cool to see the old brick hammered around the ring. Really surprised to see one throw a leg out of bed. I guess you could say there’s now an inspection window. They’re not a heavy car, 1350-1400kg tops with a turbo motor. My 244 was 1280kg. They are softly sprung so lean a lot but it helps allow the big heavy live axle at the rear to move without upsetting the body too much. I hope you get it on the road again soon. Long live Redblock power 💪 Greetings from Oz.
Is definitely not your (or anybody's) fault. It's a machine and it's not meant to live forever, when you put it onto the ring, you know that you'll demand to the car "more" than he usually can offer. This kind of things happen and you're an awesome man, we all know you feel bad because it's other's car but hey, health prevail over all! Love u ♥
Excuse me, old Volvo's ARE meant to live forever! In a more serious note, you're right. It's an object after all, it's being used. Eventually every car will break sooner or later.
The best laugh I have had in a while Misha.... That Corvette driver did not want to be passed by a dirty old Volvo 240 😂😂😂😂 reminds me of Sabine in the Ford Transit on Topgear.... you driving this underdog car was very entertaining... great upload..👍
Almost rust free 240 shell is very desirable here in Scandinavia so surely it would be best to just fix it up and get the baby back on road! Shame it didnt last the whole run! But surely it will come stronger when its fixed! Maybe it starvated on oil when cornering fast?
@Bassalicious the 245 estates are my absolute fav of the lot. And they may not say it out loud but they'll softly say to themselves while they drive by, 'those things are cool'.
I'm also driving a 245, but with a b230a engine and aw70 transmission, it's slow, handles like a boat, but I would never trade it for anything else (ok, maybe a ford escort mk1 with a sierra cosworth engine)
Great vid, can't wait to see the follow up. Very kind of you to cover recovery / storage costs. Let's see this puppy back on coil-overs, lightened, with a big turbo engine. Oh and perhaps a bigger rad!
I'm sure it was the wet sump oil system. Probably starved it of oil going around all those corners. RIP little engine. You've served with honor and dignity.
im more sure that it was temperature related since he wasnt running an oilcooler, guess it made the oil thin enough to not lubricate and possibly also starved it as a result
@@Bassalicious Just the "standard" setup that most people run, B230FK block with B234F head. Forged rods, stock pistons and crank. GTX2871R turbo, homemade exhaust manifold and intake plenum. It’s mostly a street car so I’m going with a small turbo, aiming for around 350-400hp at the flywheel with good low-end torque and driveability. And then good suspension and brakes obviously.
@@NorwayVFX Sounds like a lovely setup, good luck with it! My dream setup would be the same bottom end as yours but with a 8V 531 head and around 1.5 bar of boost. Sadly all that stuff is illegal in Germany unless you have hundreds of thousands of Euros to burn. Edit: Forgot to say I'm driving a 245 with a bone stock B230F and M47.
Did the car have an oil cooler? Non turbo volvos didn't come with an oil cooler so when he swapped to the 940 engine perhaps he didn't add one? Also if you got the engine from a 1993+ 940 they came with water to oil coolers that used a much larger radiator to keep up with the added strain on the cooling system. If he was still running the water to oil cooler with that small stock 240 radiator it could get the water and oil temps quite hot. These engines are as robust as they come and will usually only fail due to user error or incorrect setup.
Nice seeing you here, i checked the registration on the site that keeps track of cars in sweden and it said that the engine should have come from a later 940 with a low pressure turbo. One big problem that i see too is the use of the Biltema oilfilters which are no good in a redblock and since they took it to the track that was the end.
I don't think the small radiator could have the water to oil cooler. The option with the small radiator for turbo engines usually had a separate oil cooler right next to it.
@@viktorstj that is correct. The earlier 940 turbos are like a 740 turbo with the oil to air cooler up on the driver side beside the radiator. In 1993 they changed to the water to oil cooler and used a bigger radiator because of this. His engine was pulled from a later 940 with the water to oil cooler, so if he is still running the small radiator that the 240/740 would have came with, the oil temps and water temps will get too hot.
@@stridsvagn1039 yea so unless he added an air to oil cooler OR a better radiator. The stock cooling system would be strained by that water to oil cooler and thus fore oil temps will get hot
Fun but sad lap Misha :/ Tho it seem to have some weird noise from the engine all the time since the start of the lap, maybe some internals were already cracked? Because even the owner thought its something common like a fan.. anyways looking to see this car back again with better engine!
B230 bottom end... yeah, it can happen... be proud you killed one, Misha! That is not an easy task. I've had several of these with many more miles and pushed as hard as you were pushing. I've also had 2 break from other issues. One was an oil pump pressure spring break and the other was head gasket failure. I've had one go through the side of the block like that, but it was after we abused the *crap out of it (driving from Dallas to Wichita KS with a known blown head gasket - but had to get home ASAP and didn't want to abandon car... things you do when you're poor) it made it home (took 12 quarts of oil) and then 2 weeks later, it got revved very high, and the wrist pin let go, putting the connecting rod through the block up high like what that one did. Almost no leakage of oil, but a dead motor.
Love this video. You respected that car so much driving it around. And the. You have give him great advice about the car which to me makes perfect sense. Thanks for the amazing video 💙🙏🏼✌🏼
Have blown a few 240 engines, transmission and rear axles. The best 240 I had was a 1981 TIC with 1,5bar, volvo r-sport suspension parts. In a 240 you should always mount a powerful electric fan. Just don't go after how big it is, look after how much air it can push thru the radiator.
Knock started at 9:05 probably due to low oil level + oil temperature + g forces + wear 9:18 is when he notices what is happening 9:34 you can hear the rod knock due to probably too hot pistons 10:07 oil pump failure (no manifold pressure) 10:37 a little bit of rod knock and left turn (oil manifold pressure is sustained) 11:00 next oil pump failure 11:18 2 next oil pump failures 11:31 main rod bearing has spinned 11:41 next oil pump failure... And then the bearing siezes... I hope that there was no oil spilled ;)
Legendary car, top class in its year. You are the best not only accepting to take this baby for a ride in the track but also for taking care of it after the incident. Respect Misha!
A lot of the rattling sound earlier in the lap before it blew up is the fan for the ventilation in the car, which is why the owner first thought it was just the fan when they heard the rod knock. The fans in these old Volvos tend to touch the housing they're inside and make some really terrible sounds, especially when going over bumps. You can hear that the noise isn't consistent with engine RPM.
@@NorwayVFX It was from the beginning the rod knock that the owner mistook for fan noise. Compare that noise at 3:51, 4:55 and 11:40, it became more continuous each time until the rod came off.
Lovely car in a lovely colour, totally not biased since I have an 85 estate the same tone. Better cooling system, new engine, new H-beam rods for it would be a good idea and that engine would be good and reliable for MUCH more boost! 240s definitely are an underdog on the race track but the Group A race cars proved the chassis very competitive in the 80s so don't let their boxy looks fool you, they can be track beasts too
I miss my 85 estate in that color... it was just a plain non-turbo with an automatic (with o/d) we drove that thing from 170,000 miles until 390,000 and then sold it to another guy when the fuel pump went out - and it had a weird little knock/rattle on start up - he was still driving it 4 years later, and it still had that same little rattle... Great car to go cross-country with 2 little kids... Cheers!
The flying brick......well at least for a while. Well at least anyone passed by the 240 would have died of embarrassment........It would take ballz of steel to drive that thing over 200km/hr on anything other than an airport runway. I wouldnt feel responsible..its a modded "stock" engine not meant to be driven hard as the owner wanted it to be. If you want an old engine to last at max rpm, boost etc it needs to be correctly overhauled AND balanced using quality parts. Thanks for another bangin video Misha ))
I was at the the track on the same day with my 2006 fiesta st, it was my first ever lap and my rear muffler fell of and was barely hanging after caroussel. I didnt knew at the time that you can freerly stop at the safe place on the track if something is broken and drove it to the end praying that it it will not fall of 😂. At least now I know what to do when stuff like this happens..😅
The old redblocks are weird beasts, supposedly the lpt version was 140ish bhp, the hpt a little over 190 in top sport trim. I have an lpt, but with a bigger turbo and running hpt boost levels, so maybe 200-220ish bhp. It's not quick quick, but it's the midrange where these things excel, they just pull like a train.
I love that in most videos, Misha rarely uses the mirrors cost he is going to fast, this one it’s once a second! All cars deserve the chance to be driven like this :)
Just sounded like a typical rod bearing failure after those 267 thousand kms - it could happen to any motor :) What's more impressive is that when it created the inspection window in the block, it didn't drop any fluids on the track! Wonder if that was an intentional piece of engine bay design from good ol' Volvo? :P
Misha just broken the Nokia 3310 of automobile. 😅😂 I wish the Volvo come back stronger with better brakes too, IMO that's the only other things that need attention. And maybe more cooler.
Wow, this is wild. A stock Volvo red block blowing up is RARE. Even when it's a swap. My car has the NA version of this engine, the B230F, and it's as happy as could be at over 440.000 km. Over 1 million km isn't unusual for these engines at all. It must have spun a bearing or worse judging from the sound.
yep the redblocks are bulletproof most of the time, but on a track like this without an oilcooler it wasnt going to last long with any kind of serious beating. i have severely overheated mine once getting the gauge to the red part without breaking the gasket or warping the head, true miracle ;))
@@stridsvagn1039 Oh right and the turbo won't help oil temps either. Yeah that might be the culprit. Mine never goes above halfway on the gauge, but I don't have an oil temp gauge and I never took it to the race track either.

I think to engine failed due to high oil temps, thin oil , probably worn crankshaftsbearrings and the G forces in brunchen that possibly left the oil pickup dry made this engine blow up . Nice lap and very brave!
I have such a soft spot for 240 GLs! It was my first car and I loved it until it threw a rod after some **spirited** driving. I cant wait until the restomod community really get their hands on them and blows us all away! Good on you Misha for helping this guy out.
I thought the sound was the fender touching the tire wall but that must have been a rod knock from the get go. Bad bearing maybe since the sound kinda followed the body roll 😂Hilarious
Haha I thought exactly the same - that noise COULD be a fender or smt, but then I saw that it depended on the revs and I was like “ok, that is the matter of time, I wonder whether he will notice that”. Turns out he didn’t 😂 but it lasted for quite a while, so that’s something
that rattle in most of the video is actually the a/c heater fan motor... it sits in the center console, and on older 240s they start making that noise, especially when turning corners... and it's a real PITA to change out - with some careful cutting, you can get it done in about 4 hours. Volvo pays 12 hours in tech manual to change it. It's like the entire dash is built around it. The first actual knock I heard was just as they were coming into/around Carousel, and it was different by just a tone downward. I should state, I've owned 17 Volvos, and broken 3 motors ( all redblocks, each with over 200,000 miles on them, one with over 450,000 miles on it... and it rattled for a LONG time, albeit not pushing redline for 10 miles) so I know what they sound like when coming apart.
Ah, this brings back memories.......... It was the weekend of "Live Aid" in 1985 and we were ready to drive to Benidorm in Spain ( from Bergen ) in an 1977 Ford Taunus 2.0L. Due to one of the guys working late the plan was to start driving at 23.00 Friday night and go non stop. We got about 7 km when the engine developed an knocking noise, so we turned around and limped to my workshop. We tore the head off the engine and found that cylinder 3 was missing a large piece of the piston, so a new engine was needed. Next morning we called all the local breakers yards to try to find a Ford 2.0 SOHC engine but no one had any in, what to do. Called everyone again, did they have an 1.6L SOHC engine in ? One breakers yard had one that he did not know the mileage or condition of so we told him "sold", we are coming to pick it up. While 2 of the guys went to pick it up, me and a friend tore the engine out of the car. They came back with an engine severely rusted on the outside and told us that it was lying on the ground outside of the breakers shed! Anyway, we got the engine in and connected and tried to start it. It barely cranked over but after some attempts it turned over easier and eventually started, success! We repacked the car and left at about 21.00 Saturday evening. The engine was not good as shown when is started boiling after 5 km, so we got some water from a small river and refilled the cooling system. We decided to turn around, not to give up, but to grab some plastic containers for water as we might need them for the 2900 km journey ( one way ). We also packed some more tools...... Long story short, we "boiled" our way to Spain. It got better as the rust and the gunk got boiled out of the coolant system. When we were in Benidorm, we found a Ford dealer and managed to order a new water pump and thermostat and swapped the parts in the Ford dealers parking lot. It cured the problem as the car only boiled twice on the return leg from Benidorm. I can safely say it was the most fun road trip/vacation I have ever had........

I had a similar engine in an old Volvo I owned a while ago. It had a oil leak from the cap also. It was a breather pipe that was blocked iirc. Also Did you know its probably a renault block? Mine was
From the first time you mentioned it getting hot we could hear the rod bearings knocking. You couldn't in the car but on the camera mic its quite clear. Probably wide tolerances because of the engines age and older oil that would break down easily on track. To be expected really.
The one time my favourite car is on the channel and it's in my favourite colour too it blows the engine despite being virtually bulletproof. Wth, I feel robbed :D

Im sure that is what the car wanted instead of being alone and stuck under some leaves and left to rot to die. And ones the engine is replaced will be able to continue to make memories for him and the owner, simply this car just got interesting and is basically laying down its own story for everyone to see, love it! and another take away from this video is your nobility "Im not responsible but i feel involved" that will resonate to a lot of young and old viewers and hope will teach them a thing or two that it does not have to be your fault or be accountable to be able to decide if your going to help a fellow human being. Props to your parents for raising Misha!
That was an epic send off for that Volvo. It may have only lasted 9 mins but what a 9 minutes. I was hoping you were going to buy it and turn it into a track sleeper.
Great point about the continued experience that will come with bringing the car back to life. Some of the best memories are made out of that type of thing. If Kasper can get a good replacement engine together, and a friend to help fit it I hope someone makes a video and puts it on UA-cam.
There used to be a company called Steffansson Automotive that had all the parts to turn your 1981 to 1984 Volvo 242 Turbo into the 1983 Group-A DTM homologation version. The firewall braces on this car were available from Volvo as were the bottom supports. Ipd, a Volvo Tuner from Portland, OR (USA) had a cross tower brace and sway bars. The rear end is a Dana 44 that could easily accept a Quaiffe or LSD. The best engine is the B23FT from the 740. My old 242 Turbo would have done much better on the ring, but it was sold years ago.
Misha, I hope you can do an update of this when the engine arrives. Also why LS swap it? Rotary swap it instead... be different! 👍 Just imagine a rotary engine with a variomatic transmission. That would be a pretty interesting combination. 👍

The stock MAX level on the dipstick is a guidline for those elderly People never revving it past 3000rpm 😂😂😂
@@knotannrkpg Could be oil starvation for sure.
I wonder if oil starvation in the long corners contributed to the engine failure? Thumbs up for a great video and going above and beyond to help out a fellow gear head.
I was thinking the same thing. If I had to guess, I‘d say oil starvation killed it.
Most likely. You can hear some noise few corners before that were not the fan clearly...
@@vasek987 I know nothing about Volvo engines, but have built some old Datsun engines for road racing. Seems like a windage tray in the oil pan could be a potential easy fix.
My guess also, not uncommon to put in baffles in the sump of the red blocks if you use it for some more enthusiastic driving.
Long live Redblock power 💪
Greetings from Oz.
You did the impossible misha🤣🤣
SAD
Not impossible.... just highly improbable. :)
@@CaptainSeamus But still damn near impossible 😜
@@danishghostrider FACT! 🤣
Almost rust free 240 shell is very desirable here in Scandinavia so surely it would be best to just fix it up and get the baby back on road! Shame it didnt last the whole run! But surely it will come stronger when its fixed! Maybe it starvated on oil when cornering fast?
One of the most eye catching cars on the road, love these old volvos.
I think so too but most people don't apparently. Maybe that's because I'm driving a 245 but it's very rare for it to turn heads.
@Bassalicious the 245 estates are my absolute fav of the lot. And they may not say it out loud but they'll softly say to themselves while they drive by, 'those things are cool'.
used to have a 240 wagon, shit condition but got lots of attention here in the uk!
@@angryii5411 I like to imagine that too :D
I'm also driving a 245, but with a b230a engine and aw70 transmission, it's slow, handles like a boat, but I would never trade it for anything else (ok, maybe a ford escort mk1 with a sierra cosworth engine)
Great vid, can't wait to see the follow up. Very kind of you to cover recovery / storage costs. Let's see this puppy back on coil-overs, lightened, with a big turbo engine. Oh and perhaps a bigger rad!
Misha staying humble AF helping the lad out. Top man ❤
I'm sure it was the wet sump oil system. Probably starved it of oil going around all those corners. RIP little engine. You've served with honor and dignity.
im more sure that it was temperature related since he wasnt running an oilcooler, guess it made the oil thin enough to not lubricate and possibly also starved it as a result
You'd be correct. They have massive oil starvation issues with factory sumps.
@@stridsvagn1039 Probably both. Mitsu 13 @ 1-1.2 bar (?) + original sump + no idea what temps + no idea what press = death on the nords.
Hell yes, love me some brick content! Hopefully I will bring my 1973 Volvo 145 with a 16v turbo swap to the ring in the near future.
B234 or some other engine?
Yeah, it was knocking on deceleration from early on
@@TimmayytooHmmm makes me wonder if the timing was off
That rattling noise predicted big trouble imho
I love that he put this on the track, I’d love to see
More low powered runs.😊
A real Volvo, it has to live on.
By overheating them?
@@andrewaton3353 overheat, rods thru the blocks etc
Knock started at 9:05 probably due to low oil level + oil temperature + g forces + wear
9:18 is when he notices what is happening
9:34 you can hear the rod knock due to probably too hot pistons
10:07 oil pump failure (no manifold pressure)
10:37 a little bit of rod knock and left turn (oil manifold pressure is sustained)
11:00 next oil pump failure
11:18 2 next oil pump failures
11:31 main rod bearing has spinned
11:41 next oil pump failure... And then the bearing siezes...
I hope that there was no oil spilled ;)

I was listening to that knock from the start of the lap already with a keen ear...
Yes, it was already doomed.
I think the camera amplifies the sound. It was probably way quieter for them.
@@JosephSamsoryes, mics are way better at picking these sounds up than human ears.
Best of your videos so far. Included nostalgica, low expectations, high expectations, joy and sadness. 5/5
At least now I know what to do when stuff like this happens..😅
great track trip! even with this story! nice to see your assistance in such a situation! deserves great respect!
Live the videos dude, keep smashing them laps out for us to enjoy 🔥🔥🔥
This was so cool! Watching the owner's expressions as you threw it about a bit, and you helping out with costs. Bravo both!
Go Torslanda ❤ I would love to see the C8 owners face in the beginning
I remember my friends build a 242 with a 960 motor with a turbo it was a beast
even tho you are not responsible and still payed for storaage and all , that is a very nice gesture. Respect
That's the fastest 160hp I've ever seen! Looked more like double until it turned into 1hp air compressor at 11:59
The old redblocks are weird beasts, supposedly the lpt version was 140ish bhp, the hpt a little over 190 in top sport trim.
I have an lpt, but with a bigger turbo and running hpt boost levels, so maybe 200-220ish bhp. It's not quick quick, but it's the midrange where these things excel, they just pull like a train.
Well its only a little under 1300kg and has good power thoughout the powerband unlike a honda engine.
I love that in most videos, Misha rarely uses the mirrors cost he is going to fast, this one it’s once a second! All cars deserve the chance to be driven like this :)
OK. It's not as slow as I thought it would be, it surprised me 😅
Misha, you are such a good person, i hope for the best to you, car and owner
The pickup from 120-180 was actually impressive
I thought the same then I realised that the needle just moves faster with a "short" speedo that only reads to 200kph
This is the fastest 180 hp car I have seen in these videos
Just sounded like a typical rod bearing failure after those 267 thousand kms - it could happen to any motor :) What's more impressive is that when it created the inspection window in the block, it didn't drop any fluids on the track! Wonder if that was an intentional piece of engine bay design from good ol' Volvo? :P
As a swedish person it’s really fun to se you drive an old Volvo around the ring! Love your video. Keep it up man
Misha just broken the Nokia 3310 of automobile. 😅😂
I wish the Volvo come back stronger with better brakes too, IMO that's the only other things that need attention.
And maybe more cooler.
So good to see something old school rip on the ring
I definitely think it deserves a new engine and another lap on the ring

Like I've said before, aside from the driving aspect, there isn't anyone doing what Misha does with such honesty and integrity.
helvete fan också! :)
Full marks to you Misha for your support. It was a great watch too until it started to warm up 👍
I think to engine failed due to high oil temps, thin oil , probably worn crankshaftsbearrings and the G forces in brunchen that possibly left the oil pickup dry made this engine blow up .
@@CaptainSeamus Interesting, Thats crazy hours for just a fan motor 😂
Ah, this brings back memories..........
It was the weekend of "Live Aid" in 1985 and we were ready to drive to Benidorm in Spain
( from Bergen ) in an 1977 Ford Taunus 2.0L. Due to one of the guys working late the plan
was to start driving at 23.00 Friday night and go non stop.
We got about 7 km when the engine developed an knocking noise, so we turned around and
limped to my workshop. We tore the head off the engine and found that cylinder 3 was missing
a large piece of the piston, so a new engine was needed.
Next morning we called all the local breakers yards to try to find a Ford 2.0 SOHC engine
but no one had any in, what to do.
Called everyone again, did they have an 1.6L SOHC engine in ?
One breakers yard had one that he did not know the mileage or condition of so we told him
"sold", we are coming to pick it up. While 2 of the guys went to pick it up, me and a friend
tore the engine out of the car.
They came back with an engine severely rusted on the outside and told us that it was
lying on the ground outside of the breakers shed!
Anyway, we got the engine in and connected and tried to start it. It barely cranked over
but after some attempts it turned over easier and eventually started, success!
We repacked the car and left at about 21.00 Saturday evening.
The engine was not good as shown when is started boiling after 5 km, so we got some
water from a small river and refilled the cooling system. We decided to turn around, not
to give up, but to grab some plastic containers for water as we might need them for the
2900 km journey ( one way ). We also packed some more tools......
Long story short, we "boiled" our way to Spain. It got better as the rust and the gunk got
boiled out of the coolant system.
When we were in Benidorm, we found a Ford dealer and managed to order a new water
pump and thermostat and swapped the parts in the Ford dealers parking lot.
It cured the problem as the car only boiled twice on the return leg from Benidorm.
I can safely say it was the most fun road trip/vacation I have ever had........
Holy shit that's amazing! Thnx for sharing it with us!

I know Misha is kidding about the LS-swap, but it is fairly easy to put a Chevy smallblock in the 240.
Youre such a nice guy. Helping youre followers out this was not youre fault at all, but you still want to help him so sweet. Now for the fun very impressive you blew up a volvo xd
I had a similar engine in an old Volvo I owned a while ago. It had a oil leak from the cap also. It was a breather pipe that was blocked iirc. Also Did you know its probably a renault block? Mine was
the old "cigarette lighter" pcv flame arrestor... (if you know, you know)
From the first time you mentioned it getting hot we could hear the rod bearings knocking. You couldn't in the car but on the camera mic its quite clear.
Probably wide tolerances because of the engines age and older oil that would break down easily on track.
To be expected really.
You're a good dude, Misha.
Luckily no Crash !!! Amazing Content. Thank you Misha
The one time my favourite car is on the channel and it's in my favourite colour too it blows the engine despite being virtually bulletproof. Wth, I feel robbed :D

Awesome start to the lap… you can hear the big ends knocking at the start of you’re lap so it’s not you’re fault 👍🏼

Is it only my impression or speedometer shows 20-30% more than it is really running? (until it hits 200 of course)
That was an epic send off for that Volvo. It may have only lasted 9 mins but what a 9 minutes. I was hoping you were going to buy it and turn it into a track sleeper.
Thats the chance you take with a car when your running them on a track. Stuff happens. Sorry for the bad luck. But it was a good video regardless
Great point about the continued experience that will come with bringing the car back to life. Some of the best memories are made out of that type of thing.
If Kasper can get a good replacement engine together, and a friend to help fit it I hope someone makes a video and puts it on UA-cam.
Get a price for the repair/swap and set up a go fund for that amount...I'm sure a few will chip in
There used to be a company called Steffansson Automotive that had all the parts to turn your 1981 to 1984 Volvo 242 Turbo into the 1983 Group-A DTM homologation version.
Wow that's impressive to blow one of those up, seems to hold for anything
Love the old 240s. Nice job overtaking the corvette. Lol. Good on you misha for helping out with storage and what not
Misha, I hope you can do an update of this when the engine arrives. Also why LS swap it? Rotary swap it instead... be different! 👍
Just imagine a rotary engine with a variomatic transmission. That would be a pretty interesting combination. 👍
