- Pat Metheny Secret Story recorded live in New Brunswick, New Jersey, November 24, 1992.
Pat Metheny, guitars
Torsten DeWinkel, guitar & misc
Jim Beard & Gil Goldstein, keyboards
Steve Rodby, bass
Paul Wertico, drums
Armando Marcal, percussion
David Blamires, Mark Ledford, background vocals, misc. instruments.
Pat Metheny? What an oddity. He comes from a time when the industry really cared about every listener. This master piece lasts about 10 minutes and nobody cares. Now the industry is crappy music everywhere. I hope I can still save my child from today's garbage music. I am trying real hard to teach her to appreciate this music. We owe that much to Pat.
I was lucky enough to be at this show. I recall being amazed by Mark Ledford and David Blamires. In the midst of such great music, they were doing so much so well.
You should listen to David's album Absolute Drivel. It's interesting, intelligent and hilarious. You'll be amazed again.
I was at this show as well.💜💜
I saw this tour in D. C. 2 weeks earlier. Outstanding!
I've wondered HOW can anyone compose for those vocals? Pat (and most 'lyrical' musicians) use intruments like voices, but Pat uses human voices for an instrument that doesn't exist. These blow me away. Same with "Over the Treetops" though those vocals aren't as complicated as these.
@@Fulmer1000 I think is on the DVD (or a separate interview) when Pat says he didn't know if they could do this live - I forget why, but he got the musicians who could do it and they did a great job. He doesn't have his usual horizontal striped shirt here.
No every one can be in tune with the universe. Pat Matheney is.
🌍🙏🏿💪🏿💪🏿🇿🇦🙆🏿♂️❤️
Best album I've every owned. Can't stop listening to it. Much greater than the sum of its parts.
yes your right ! the best album from pat !
Thank God for Pat Metheny . I cannot imagine living my life without his music.
Same here 7cds, 3lps, 2cassettes
the Mozart of our times
This man is up there with Andreas Vollenweider and Vangelis creating beautiful landscapes and stories that inspire you and make you dream…
I've liked Andreas ever since he was introduced to America many years ago and have purchased most all of his themed induced Cds. But I must interject that Pat has meant so much more to my listening pleasure over that past 45 to 46 yrs. He is one of the few artist that his music is timeless and cannot be dated. Just as fresh sounding today as it was back then, even more so now with technology such as You Tube along with sound quality enhancements...God bless all the wonderful musicians that have played with PMG and other Pat Metheny projects. And God bless you as well.🙏
Yes!!! He creates landscapes with stories in them.
R.I.P. Mark Ledford ... ! He was great ..
I had tried for years to understand Pat Metheny, without much luck. Than suddenly, cannot forget, I was in Ireland at that time, I decided to start listening to it deep into the night and suddenly I cracked it. Since then Pat Metheny has become an important part of my live and every time I feel "kind of blue" I go back to him. Secret Story and Letters from Home where the first two album I owned and since that day I still keep going back to it.
He never released any other work similar to this. My fav of all his work
One of the most astonishing live performances ever on video.
Mark Ledford did an awesome job here. RIP
The most rowdy 7/4 tune ever! A little "First Circle" clap rhythm thrown in courtesy of Mr. Wertico = absolute brilliance. Post break we're treated to 6/8 and a couple of key modulations for good measure!
Mesmerizing vocals, especially starting at 7:10, combined with Pat's brilliance makes this an all time classic.
Pat is in a class by himself. The fact that he can mold and morph the music of a different culture (Secret Story 1992), into this jazz thing and sounding good to the ears is unbelievable.
Can't believe this album is 25 yrs old already. My god!! Anyway, I started listening to Pat in the mid-70's while in college and have probably seen him 20 times thru the years at many different venues in America. One such time was when i was traveling from AZ to IL and i routed myself to be in Denver when he was there. 9/29/92. Not having a tic, i bought an extra from a woman outside and proceeded to enjoy this incredible Secret Story concert. But it was this song that was most amazing. When the singers first started singing, about half of us immediately stood straight up applauding....like a doctor testing your reflexes, it was something that happened without having the time to think about it. Truely amazing moment and something I had never seen before nor after. Very moving and I'm sure one of those you had to be there happening but i wanted to share nevertheless. Thank you Pat!!
I was also blessed to see Pat and Lyle on this tour in San Diego. When Lyle cuts in about 6:30 it gives me chills every time.
Bobo... i was at atht same show in Denver!
Had killer seats in 5th row orchestra!
my wife on my left and a young couple who had never seen Pat before on my right. When this song was played.. he girl on my right grabs my arm at teh startling break mid way.. she says "i'm sorry!" ... "no, it's ok"... then she says "this is like a religious experience" .. "yes, that is exactly what this is! and Thank God He gave us this!"
Great story, I can only imagine if I was there. Regret not seeing the Secret Story tour.
Simply ASTOUNDING. AMAZING.
There is a God. He brought us Patrick Bruce Metheny. WOW.
Couldn't say it better
gilmandel thank you.
I’ll never stop regretting that I discovered Pat 10 years too late to see this group live. I’ve seen him play his quartet a few times and as wonderful as that is I bet the whole band hits much differently
Nothing like the band, PMG!! Listening to him since 1988!
I saw them live every chance I got. Fortunately mostly in smaller concert spaces.
This album really grew on me. Wasn't quite sure at first, but has turned into one of my favorites!
This is human beings at their very, very best.
This music goes straight to the soul. I love it more than any music I have ever hear in my life!!!!
This live performance has an excitement that makes the original CD recording sound tame (relatively speaking). I never thought I would ever say that about any music.
The man is so creative.
This is 1993
Think of all the work he has done between this and Orchestrion.
amazing mind.
This ensamble is the closest you can get to hear the voice of heavens. This piece is probably even beyond ... I can only love you Pat.
One of Pat´s most beautiful compositions. There is a Brazilian rhrythm on vocals.
Just love the momentum of this piece... an artist that is so underrated.
I don't believe that Pat Metheny is underrated whatsoever.
@@usandthemakakelly2535 Maybe he's underrated by the 99% of Americans who never heard of him !!
pats solo on this song is the definiation of perfection. wolfen
6:39: truly astonishing.
Yes, my favorite part of the song. Probably on the entire record.
Team work as one body, so lively performed! I love this recording!
i get happy feet every time i hear this. turn it up
me too. :)
Jeez, that transition at about 6:37, starting with the piano!
The best band Pat ever assembled imho, and what a performance! Awesome
Why can't there be actual music like this nowadays?
Saw this concert in Austin @ The Bass Concert Hall in September, 1992, with my very good friend, Jerry LaVergne, Rest his soul. It was amazing. I didn't know at the time but Jerry had seen it 2 nights before in Dallas. We had been talking about it for at least a month or more. A few days later I moved to Northern California. This was an excellent show, I have kept it in my heart as what music should really be.
Seeing and not believing. The best musical video on UA-cam (Modern Jazz Genre).
One of my favorite song , this is so great.. love it
The drop at 06:38 is so wonderful!
As a bassist myself I was immediately drawn in by Rodby's line, and then those vocal harmonies, just pure magic! One of the coolest tunes I've ever heard. I love it!
Ile ja się naszukałem żeby znaleźć ten kawałek 😃
One of my favorite songs!!!
The last few minutes of this song are pure musical bliss, as only Pat Metheny could produce...
I saw the PMG in 1993 at Wolf Trap in Washington, DC. It was the same tour. An incredible show. The group was at their peak. They were an amazing group of musicians working together to create an unforgettable experience/performance.
It's hard to believe it was 30 years ago. Where does the time go?
Just wondering if Pat will consider getting the group together again! It would be awesome!!
@@fernandopinero3182
It’d be nice but probably won’t happen. Without Lyle Mays, it wouldn’t be the same.
@@cohoanglervancouverwa6755 That’s true! I was able to see them while on tour at Nashville, TN, when I was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY. After this, I saw him in Puerto Rico while on the tour An Evening with Pat Metheny, in September 2017 and in trio at the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazzfest, and at the Beacon Theatre.
I was at that show
Absolute magic
I love how so many of us concertgoers are finding each other in the comments, YEARS later -- that's the power of timeless art
@@amarbyrd2520
Technically I was incorrect.
The show that both you and I attended was NOT the Pat Metheny Group. It was Pat Metheny playing Secret Story, which was Pat’s solo album.
The musicians were all from PMG (Steve Rodby, Paul Wertico, Armondo Marcal, etc), with the notable exception of Lyle Mays. He wasn’t there.
Nevertheless it was indeed magical. Unforgettable.
Also, three years later PMG was at Wolf Trap playing their ‘We Live Here’ album. Lyle Mays was there. And so was I.
Pure ART!!!
Doesn't get any better than this. Or tighter. Simply incredible.
I love the way each musician is working flat out to achieve such a great result.
Still here, still watching and listening...
Pat always has the best he can find to accompany him on his magical ride!
Top 🌻🌻🌻
The greatest composer of those years!
When I first heard this, I was hooked forever. I thank my dear friend, it was on my birthday that he gave me a copy on cassette 😃played it during my party in the garden, wonderful🌝
Best Metheny piece ever.
My Fiirst concert at 19 was from this album and have loved him ever since!
the vocals in this piece are wordless chant...;-)
Possibly my favorite Metheny work...
The ostinato is in 7/8 while the band plays in 6/8. But that's nothing compared to what is asked from the singers,
I can't even imagine the work to memorise all these "words".
Pat added some modulations and an ending to the final part instead of the fade out.
Very interesting composition, but the Secret story album is full of beautiful tunes.
I can't articulate it as well as you did, but I love all the exciting changes in last two minutes of this gorgeous tune... It adds something truly special to an already stratospheric performance!
This is beyond incredible!! THANKS! Those lovely singers!!!!
I was fortunate to see this show in Albuquerque, New Mexico in '92... phenomenal show... I still have my ticket stub❤
Amazing Cross-cultural integration. Talented instrumentalists (including voices). First view of the live version since the 90s when I got the CD. This was my favorite track on the album, as complex and challenging as it was. Thanks Pat Metheny and company.
I was at this show. Pat was unbelievable 💜💜💜
Thank you for telling stories on the strings...
What says the most about Metheny as a person and musician is that over the years there have been no scandals and no one has ever complained that he had a big ego and wanted all the glory for himself. The music reflects this expansiveness and is the richer for it.
So true. He is a very humble person. I met him back in 1992 when he signed all my PM's CDs after a concert in Caracas, he was so nice and friendly and a couple of hours after that we met again on a jazz place/bar, everybody went there, the late Mark Ledford RIP, Armando Marçal, S Rodby, etc...we hang and talk, they played music until 3 am. Unforgettable night...
I saw him a couple of times in Vancouver and Chicago, but I never met him. Lucky you!
GRANDIOSO!!!
SENSACIONAL!!!
Excelente .
Love this album! Love this tune! Probably heard this album and this tune several dozen times throughout the years. NEVER seen it performed before, though. Until now! On UA-cam! Let's just say that I was envisioning a whole different set of singers. (Never read the credits on the CD, now that I think about it.) Loved watching the TWO GUYS sing the melody! LOL! Lots of energy with this song. Thoroughly enjoyed the video (wish I was at the concert)!!
Glad you like it !!! and just for a little envy from you, I saw it live... twice, in NY in '92 and in Caracas in '93... and to finish it all, after the concert my pal Joaquín and I went to a jazz bar and 1/2 later almost the whole group came into the place and played till 3:30 in the morning. Jealous yet ? There was like only 20 people in the place, something like a private concert/party, we chat with all of them for almost 3 hours; and by Metheny's own words it was the last presentation after almost 3 years on the road with the Secret Story Tour, he said he was happy and sad at the same time. One of the greatest experience of my life. It was awesome. Mark Ledford RIP.
Jorge Luis Garcia and now PM doesn't go to jams any longer because of this UA-cam thing! It's a pity to be sure! closest I got to that kind of experience was having Anjelique Kidjo's band show up to a gig of mine and jam with us for an hour past the last call!
Jorge Luis Garcia Boy do I envy you. In 1999 I was divorcing my 2nd wife and "Finding and Believing" and "Cathedral In A Suitcase" got me through. Believe it or not. I had never seen this performed until tonight...on UA-cam. Astounding. I just saw Pat last weekend at the Thornton Winery in Temecula, California with his Unity Band (with my new wife...ha!!!). Not bad. But Pat came back for an encore and solo-ed for awhile and then got some backup from the guys plus Bruce Hornsby. I've seen Pat Metheny about 5 times all told. "The Way Up" Tour, the "Speaking of Now" Tour, the "Still Life (Talking) Tour, and couple more times. I never get enough bro. Really. **dappz**
I always envisioned a group of West African women in their ritual costumes handling the vocal chants. Just like on "Above The Treetops", my mind's eye sees 8 to 10 Cambodian girls vocalizing those mesmerizing chants. I guess from show to show it's not practical, so we appreciate David and Mark (RIP).
Cool visions. :)
i sure miss seeing Pat with that beautiful old Gibson workhorse! great solo on this one!
My mantra for those days when life weighs ! Fantastic !!!! :)
Increíble música!!!! Gracias por compartir!!!!!!!
2019 - Anyone still listening?
cant stop me !
2020
2020!!
2021....still moving and stirring the soul....
July 2022!!!!
It's too bad that more people haven't experienced Pat's absolute magic. He could any of the top guitar players ever. But he chose jazz and he compose all of this amazing sounds
Beautiful piece of music ruined by the adverts. Glad I have the album and also was lucky enogh to see it performed live.
I was lucky too, twice in 1992, NY and Caracas, Vzla. About the adverts, try using AdBlock. Thanks for the comment!
@@jorgeluisgarcia1006 Didn't realise that I could do that. I will have to find out how! I know it's not your fault.
Never quit!
one of the best live album i own
Beautiful
This is still a masterpiece of a composition. It doesn't cease to excite me. Love! Love! Love!
Fabuloso. Impresionante.
From the first sound of Last Train home till today Pat is my favorite music composer and musician of All Time!
Still life talking is not his first album, but you know that. I was impressed by his early works, Bright size life or Wichita falls (especially the tune It's for you, Metheny is already entirely in it), but this one (Secret story) is full of beautiful themes, Antonia, Always and forever... masterpieces. As a drummer, I find the most difficult is Letter from home, lot of odd time signatures, I work on it. In a few years I hope I will be able to stop counting on some tunes ! Paul Wertico is a great drummer, excellent musician, too bad he is not well known.
Great drummer. One of the reasons Metheny is so good. Have you heard. My favorite song from that album.
Been listening to this for years, one of my favorites, but I just stumbled across this video. I always thought the chanting was done by the Choir of the Cambodian Royal Palace, as they are credited on the album, and it sure sounds like Cambodian chanting to me. It blew my mind to see who was chanting on this video! What an incredible composition. Metheny is possibly the greatest jazz influence of the latter part of the 20th century, especially with all those he inspired at Berklee!
Amazing !! Thanks for sharing 💙
So So Beautiful! I feel an homage to Jaco P. in this one.
I was very fortunate to have seen this tour..in San Francisco at The Warfield theater, it was my first time seeing Pat Metheny .It was a remarkable show...just a close to sounding like the album. After this show I had seen The Pat Metheny Group many times forever a fan boy.
this is awesome!
IT IS !!!!!!!!
Metheny is unique as a composer and musician. I never get tired of listening to his music as I keep discovering new elements that grabs me and take me on to new places. Beautiful music that will live forever!
Amazing composition..
avec end of the time circle et quelques autres c est l un des morceaux les plus phénoménal que pat a composé pat je t aime
Marvelous too Great! Are They Gods?
beautiful lyrics
i so wish i would've been at that concert ! my fav Pat Metheny album !!
+1guitbox1 I was at this concert (i.e., the one in the video). They played a regular gig, and toward the end let us know that if we wanted to, we could stick around after -- whereupon played all the "Secret Story" tunes over again. They had to have been exhausted by the time it was over, but it was awesome.
Einfach sensationell!! Fabelhaft!
Extra-extraordinary! Vocals from another world! Pat soaring! What inspiration! 👌🙏
30 years ago and still jazzy 😎
What a show!
a pure summer sunshine day in musics
:-)
My lfe is full of pat moments....
Amicalement Guy
