    What a beautiful arrangement. Everyone was in their groove yet all one. Bassist Steve Rodby set the pace and maintained the flow for everyone throughout. The Lyle Mays solo was like a beautiful snowfall in the moonlight. And Pat took us up to the mountain top where we could stare in awe at the lush green valley below at The End of the World.

    Every work of art that he creates is inspiring and truly introspective. My Dad always said, "there are two types of music, good music and bad. I only want to hear good music." He and I found a true coming together when I introduced him to Pat Metheny's music. "GREAT" he said, and every time I hear a Pat tune I think of my Father and the great times we had listening to "GODD MUSIC".

  • @hidayaturrahmandody1676
    @hidayaturrahmandody1676 2 роки тому +4

    Been thinking about this song a lot. My interpretation is this:
    The beginning of the song is very hypnotizing and mysterious - almost as if someone/something/some entity(ies) were just starting an equation - the creation of the world. Then come the main melody which feels a lot like a reminiscence for journey to the unknown - how early civilization was trying to figure out stuff, on to the making of an improved society.
    Then Lyle's solo - it's the introduction of the "sophistication" era where we recognized things that separate humans from other animals, realization that human is the superior species, and (maybe) some people thinking they are superior than the others. There is also a taste of division in society (notice how the solo has that "jumpy" feeling between joy and misery repetitively) which is a consequences of our development and realization. Some people just wanted to stand out more than the others - sometimes way too far - and it is not always a good news for everyone. I guess the statement "Power is made by power being taken" fits the story here.
    Pat's Roland GR Solo - MADNESS is the keyword here. How we (the modern society) are pushing things to the limit to see how far we can go - just to realize that there's no limit and we will not stop until we cannot do it anymore. And maybe - just maybe - we did not think about the consequences of our madness so well... and in the end sudden abrupt to our madness will come anytime now. AND That's when the thunder sound comes in! it really put an end in Pat's solo - which is a representation of our madness.
    Humanity pushing things to the limit can be beautiful sometimes, just look at all the inventions that has done some unimaginable wonders for us. We are constantly trying to achieve the impossible, and setting an even higher goals once it is achieved... and we all kind of agree that there shouldn't be any finish line for this way of thinking - and only external factors such as the "thunder" will put a stop on us. The end of the world, as we know it.
    And after that, we're circling back to the beginning of the song. Starting fresh, innocent, and clueless again. But we don't know yet what's gonna happen in this "2nd intro", just like we have no idea how it's going to be after we left this world...
    Man I've been rambling a lot. Does this make sense to you all?

It's nice to put on high quality headphones (I use Beats), turn out the lights, and just kick back and listen. I don't think I have words that can articulate how this song makes me feel. Andy Smith Beats are ok, but it's seriously worth it to get some open back headphones from Sennheiser, ATH, Beyerdynamic, etc.
      I would also get an amp with reverb or just a hight quality amp such as the objective2.

    • @smitty195
      @smitty195 7 років тому +2

      Thanks for the info---I will look into ATH and Beyerdynamic as I have never heard of those (I do know of Sennheiser though). Do you have a preference as to which one puts out the cleanest sound? And regarding an amp, sorry for the stupid question here but what would I do with an amp? Do you mean to get one so that I can connect that to speakers? If so, I have a very decent system here at home that is run through my home theater Dolby Digital 7.1 system. Unfortunately, I can go any more powerful or louder because I live in a townhome. My neighbors would NOT be happy. LOL

    • @MatthewSheeler
      @MatthewSheeler 7 років тому +2

      Bigger headphones need more power. That's about it. Amplifiers put out more power than what's in your computer.
      As for a preference, a good all around option is the Sennheiser HD 598. They're open back and you can find plenty of reviews for it.
      A popular option on the amp end is the Objective2. Again, plenty of reviews.

    We saw The Pat Metheny Group in 1995 at The Palace Theater in Stamford, CT. I bought the tickets on a whim, not knowing what to expect. It was the We Live Here US tour. The announcer came out and said, "If you've never seen this group play live before you are in for a magical evening. God if he wasn't right. I was especially taken with David Blamires and Mark Ledford who used their voices as instruments. So thankful they were video recorded in Japan so I can replay that ensemble on demand.

    22yrs after it's release and this is still one of my top 5 favorite songs of the last 30 yrs. I remember hearing this on the radio for the first time.. just blown away by it... made a bee-line to the nearest music store (yea.. remember those?) and bought this CD ("We Live Here").. along with Joe Sample's "Invitation" & David Sanborn's "Pearls". To this day I consider that to be the single best day of music purchases I've made in my life! All three albums are simply sublime... but this album.. this song... just completely remarkable.
    I'd purchased Metheny's "Letter from Home" about 6yrs earlier and just loved that album.. but the album after that... which I have but cannot remember the name of... simply didn't work for me, which is why it took 6 yrs to buy another Metheny album.
    I had an opportunity to see him in concert during the "We Live Here" tour that same summer. I'd been to 2 concerts in 3 weeks and just didn't want to make that trip again. I agonized for 3-4 days trying to decided whether or not to make that trip and by the day of the concert I was still trying to make a decision. Ultimately, just hrs before the concert I decided not to go... I decision I'll regret for the rest of my life.

    He opened the main stage at the Lviv jazz-2016 three-hour concert almost. After the concert, I walked on slightly unsteady legs, realizing that all these world-wide trendy rock soloists-guitarists are at best pupils of the second class of the Irpen music school ...

      Lyle Mays is at the top of my list of favorite pianists:
      1. (Tie) Lyle Mays and Keith Jarrett.
      3. Lisista Valentino.
      4. Brad Mehldu.
      5. Chick Corea.

    Sad that the Pat metheny band is gone, a total disaster for many of us...

    • @EricBalcon

      To be honest what we call Pat Metheny group is only the one with Mays, Wertico etc..the other one are not known to be called Pat Metheny band or group. Of course you might think it's better but it's a question of personal taste. For me, Metheny without Mays it's like fries without sauce...

      Eric, I love that analogy. Like minds.

      I agree, Eric. For me, the era when "We Live Here", "Imaginary Day", "Still Life (talking)", etc, are the albums that I continue going back to again and again. Pat Metheny, Wertico, Mays, Rodby and having the guys in the back (Mark Ledford, etc)---my god, GOOSEBUMPS MAN!!!! And Lyle Mays is total and absolute perfection. Just listen and watch from about 3:50 until 6:50 or so. Look at how his fingers move across that keyboard and produce some beautiful stuff. Oh I miss this so much.

      Jonathan, the original PMG started with Pat, Lyle, Steve and Paul with the inclusion of Brasilian percussionists (Nana, Armando etc.). I'd say what Pat recorded with Mark Egan & Danny Gottlieb along with Lyle was kinda 'experimental' before settling down with his full-time group with guest percussionists etc.
      Bright Size Life (BSL) consisted of Pat, Jaco and Bob Moses (not Danny Gottlieb) on drums.
      Speaking for myself who has been following Pat' music since BSL through my own library and catching live gigs, I pretty much gave up following his music after 'The Way Up' album. The live concert was the final deal for me.
      Here's my three favorite videos, which I view side-by-side:
      -Facing West (Secret Story - Live 1993)
      -How Insensitive (Secret Story - Live 1993)
      -To the end of the World (the one featured here)
