It’s Good to Be a Rebel

  • Most parents dread the day their child is labeled “rebellious.” But Francesca Gino, a professor at Harvard Business School, hopes to change this negative connotation. Rather than regard rebels as troublemakers or outcasts, Gino argues, “effective rebels are people who challenge the status quo and break rules constructively, creating positive change in the process.” That’s why she believes that parents should, in fact, groom their kids to be rebels. In the latest episode of Home School, The Atlantic’s animated video series about parenting, Gino reveals why parents should teach kids to question the rules rather than take them for granted.

    I completely agree that we should teach kids to explore and not only do things the conventional way.

    Me as a parent: so I want to be a better father, son. What are something's you would do if you had more freedom?
    8 year old Son: I would redistribute the means of production amongst the workers

      @Huili Wang It means for all employees involved in the workplace to collectively own and manage it, instead of having a corporate heirarchy with bosses and the like. It's essentially the premise of socialism (as there is no private sector in socialism), only if it were certain that a socialist mode of production was also implemented.

      Yea, I try and rebel at school but there are certain lines I don’t cross. I only break rules that should be questioned or broken, mainly sticking to victimless crimes (metaphorically). I don’t do anything illegal. And I don’t do anything that would actively hurt teachers, janitors or another student

    Telling your kids to rebel kind of destroys the whole point of rebelling. If you're told to break the rules, you're technically not breaking them...

      It's not about telling them to be a rebel directly it's about being open to let the kid question reality and figure themselves out

    If you think about it, it is through rebellion that many evolutionary things have been discovered or created. I mean, rules are never a constant. Rules are something that are broken, and a new set of rules is created in place of it. That's the beauty of norms and traditional things - they are made to be broken

    • @Azknowledgethirsty
      @Azknowledgethirsty 6 років тому +2

      No tradition was bad when it was conceived, it's rather that we changed and we have the need to substitute them when, like appendix, cause suffering .

    • @EduardoEscarez
      @EduardoEscarez 6 років тому +4

      The point is not question traditions as all bad but being conscious about why are in the first place. Sometimes keeping traditions aren't all about being correct, but to be part of a certain group of people that shared them. Or in other cases, traditions change like in the case of Christmas, from its religious roots to a secular one when families of diverse backgrounds can spend a day together.
      The video doesn't say teach kids to be against everything, but to help them to be more aware about why we act as part of a larger society and how it can be changed.
