      Exactly... most Americans don't have a problem taking supplements, they have some of the most expensive urine in the world. But somehow that's a bridge too far with Veganism to take a single vitamin that's very important for human health (more important than the K2, Coenzyme Q10, or whatever the carnivore/Weston Price folks are touting now days).

    22:01 *"possibly even frightening people into giving up veganism, because they trusted you, and now you scared them"*
    This was absolutely my first reaction. I made the switch to veganism almost five years ago, and Jon was a huge factor in this switch. I watched all his videos, interacted with him on socials, I even bought his merchandise (who remembers VEGAN REVOLUTION - wow, the irony), and dithered on more than one occasion in investing in his coaching services (my finances said no).
    So when I first saw his video I was so disappointed, but I also had a little moment of panic, like "oh, maybe this vegan thing isn't so sustainable, should I follow suit?!". My common sense prevailed.
    If anyone else is feeling similar to the above, take solace in knowing that I've been vegan almost 5 years, always had very good to excellent bloodwork, my bone density and muscle mass is that of someone my junior, and I am thriving. I have no plans to abandon my morals as my morals haven't done me dirty to date. It may appear that all of our "vegan heroes" (vom) are letting us down but they do not represent the majority of vegans. New vegan products are being churned out month on month, and the good ones are selling extremely well.
    I hope this essay helps someone who may have been feeling similarly.
    Thanks Swayze!

      The vegan deterioration videos get to me sometimes and I start wondering. It's hard to deny the sudden facial changes people have. But then UV shared one of her and she looks exactly the same. It's weird how that stuff being spammed at you over and over again influences your thinking even when you're otherwise not susceptible to it
      On the other hand, I've tried having conversations with carnivore dieters and so many of them are obsessed with meat = masculinity. They unironically use terms like "cuck" all the time and EVERYTHING is apparently a cause of autism or mental illness (veganism included). So it's like well these people are clearly delusional.

Like take your multivit and get your fruit and veggies in where you can, but this maddening desire for a joyless life is such an odd side of the internet. I'm a vegan, so obviously, I'm comfortable with a certain level of discomfort and inconvenience. But like never in a million years would I want to remove the fun and pleasure in eating for all this "bio hacking" nonsense. But you know the folks who have had a MORE obvious, profit driven, well documented, unethical agenda? The dairy and meat industries. There are currently multiple law suits by dairy companies against non-dairy products for using the words “Milk” or “cheese” because the dairy industry wants to maintain their monopoly in these spaces. whilst vegetarian can be seen as a middle ground in terms of diet, ethically it is not so - a vegetarian diet still results in animals being slaughtered. whilst it is less harmful than an omnivorous diet, it doesn’t get rid of the binary. you are either paying for animals to be abused and slaughtered, or you’re not. you either find their exploitation unethical, or you don’t.

      @@user-tx5vr2lu6e Meh, I disagree, at least in theory. If you are willing to accept some suffering going into your food, but not as much as conventional meat eating, that seems like a middle ground to me. You could even put an arbitrary number on it - 'misery per calorie' - with simpler lifeforms (e.g. fish and invertebrates), as well as less cruel farming practices (factory farming vs. free range), reducing the misery per calorie. Below a certain point, you are willing to eat the food. I'm not saying its a linear curve - some changes make a more dramatic difference than others, but it isn't a simple binary of 'animal misery vs. no animal misery' (personally, I'm happy eating insects - it's not clear whether they feel 'pain' or not, but even if they do, it seems extremally unlikely they are capable of emotional or psychological pain/distress - which is enough for me)
      -
      That seems clinical, I'm sure most vegans would probably make a similar calculation - if producing a ton of soy necessarily required mildly irritating an orangutan for five minutes, most vegans would not de-facto stop eating soy, because that isn't that bad - in terms of misery per calorie.

    • @user-tx5vr2lu6e
      @user-tx5vr2lu6e 4 роки тому

      @@merrymachiavelli2041 True - after all, unless you are growing it in your back garden then some suffering goes into all food. However, there's a difference between necessary and unnecessary suffering.. I accept that insects die when my food is made, but that is necessary to produce it. If all methods of producing food mildly irritated an orangutan, then a vegan would just choose the least irritating method.
      You could totally argue that even vegans might choose food that constitutes unnecessary harm as the line for veganism is somewhat arbitrary (why stop at animal's byproducts when things like palm oil exist and harm the world immeasurably), so in that way it's not binary.
      I can see it both ways on this issue because whilst thinking about veganism - I can see it being a sliding scale as you described... but if we were talking about something like rape - If someone said "oh no I'm not a rapist, I just sexually assault people!" would you really think "ah yes, good for them, they're taking the middle path". Personally, I wouldn't - they're still committing unconsensual sexual acts and therefore are still a predator. You either always have consensual sex or you are a sexual predator. You either do the minimum effort to avoid suffering in your food (not eating direct animal products) or you don't.
      Overall I do think that vegetarianism is a good first step, but I don't think people should be satisfied with it. I don't think it is equivalent to eating meat though

      @merrymachiavelli2041 3 роки тому

      @@user-tx5vr2lu6e Just saw this. The thing is moral absolutism always produces absurdities somewhere. It is necessary when it comes to the law, because there does have to be a letter of the law even if there is discretion in sentencing, but in reality, nothing is ever black and white.
      You give sexual assault as an example, but there are all sorts of grey scenarios there; intoxication, mental health issues, both participants being under or almost-under the age of consent, one or both participants feeling pressured by outside forces...etc. None of which is to say those situations are 'okay' or should not go before the courts, just that they are morally murky enough that I wouldn't necessarily be comfortable automatically labeling people involved as 'sexual predators', as if all people with that label committed equally egregious acts.
      You can say the same about murder, terrorism, torture...etc. I honestly can't think of a crime or morally questionable activity where I wouldn't draw some distinctions between offenders in different situations, if called upon to have an opinion. That doesn't mean somethings aren't inherently wrong, just it's always gonna be complicated.

Anyway, I agree with you about almost everything, but it bothers me a bit with how flippantly you discuss how diets affect health issues in some videos (such as in this video when you say that people advocate for diets to help diseases that aren’t caused by having a certain diet). While I understand your point here and in other videos, I think to a certain degree you discredit how much some diets help with symptom management for people with certain conditions, even if they’re not curative. From my understanding, your point is that people shouldn’t promote pseudoscience and preach that certain diets can cure disease and I COMPLETELY agree. I just think that the way you say it makes it sound like you’re writing off anyone who says certain diets can help with non-food related illness. I’m a huge fan of your videos, and again, I know I’m overly sensitive about this sort of thing. Also, totally understand my point was not the point of this video lol. total sidenote: watching this video (knowing nothing about this Jon guy) I was thinking within like 3 seconds that "looks like he´s in Norway". Like.. How can a country have such a clear profile! Haha! And yeah, I´m 50/50 Swedish and Norweigan so I might pick up on details that might not be obvious, I don´t know but that ceiling tilt+that wood colour+those chubby "shabby chic" candle holders = Norway. Had it been Sweden there would have been less tilting, more grey colouring and smaller candle holders, more minimalistic, though not at minimalistic and chic as Denmark, who wins the decor round of Scandinavia. (You get this ONE THING Denmark! And maybe you win the cheap beer round too but that´s it! ;D)

    Why Jon is having interviews and conversations with carnivore advocates?
    If he stops being vegan and is highly plant based + animals (Omnivore) why and what he has to do with carnivore people? I am sure he is playing to promote that too in a close future and I even would say he is planning to do anti-vegan videos.

      He's not the only one. Carnivore advocates swoop in to "support" ex-vegans when they get backlash from their vegan fans. They're feeling wounded and vulnerable so they're easy prey. And carnists often like to present themselves as hyper "masculine", which they think would be a good thing to have in their corner.
      The carnists buddy buddy up to them for their own agenda and content. The ex-vegans feel protected.
      It's toxic.

    It is 6 minutes into your video and I have seen 8 meat commercials. I haven't seen a vegan commercial almost ever. The only semi plant commercials I seen is for Morningstar and half of their meats that they're calling plants the second ingredient is egg not not a plant. I know they're saying by 22 that they'll be mostly vegan or all vegan. The point is is I'm 55 years vegan and I still haven't got my toaster oven so I don't know where this agenda is. I should be way up to some color of car like maybe green. LOL🌱🐸🥦🐾👣
    Ps isn't he posing with animals he has hunted? SO BEST FOR THE ANIMALS?

    Tbh I would love a Soylent scenario. I have type 1 diabetes and IBS. As much as I love certain flavors and foods. There are days when I just don’t want to eat but feel bad that I’m not eating.

    As regarding him eating different from his child, I don't think his concern is with potential hypocrisy, necessarily. Rather, it seems to me to be a deeper reconsideration of the possible danger that comes with cutting out a lot of foods (and potential nutrient sources) from your diet. People might be willing to "experiment" on themselves, knowing that, as long as they monitor the situation, they are unlikely to suffer serious damage from possible malnutrition. But they are surely not willing to risk making a mistake when it comes to their children's health. I think this is due to a sense of ignorance and impotence: essentially, if you do not have a pediatrician with vegan expertise you trust, you really feel like you would be gambling with your children's health by feeding them a vegan diet.
    I understand this because, having approached veganism for a couple of years now, I have recently been thinking that if I had a child I would have no idea how to make sure to feed them properly (even an omnivore diet, but a vegan diet seems even riskier). This made me doubt my own veganism, in turn: if I would not feel my child a vegan diet, perhaps this means that I am gambling with my health more than I thought/care to admit. It's an awkward realisation, but I don't think it has anything to do with a wish to avoid hypocrisy or cook the same meal for the whole family.

    This isn’t related to the video but I just wanted to say I’ve been vegan for the past week now and finally decided on the lifestyle change and not just trying to diet. I’ve been watching you for a couple years just for entertainment and never thought I’d be vegan cause I couldn’t give up cheese. I found out I have a casein intolerance and had to give it up anyway so here I am. Thanks for the level headed vegan channel, they’re rare with the pseudoscience of diet culture.

      Hey that's great! I'm sure you know about the cruelty that involves in producing cheese. Also, it seems that casein is highly addictive. I think Dr. Greger video about that. Cheese is often the one thing that people say they couldn't give up. It only makes senses, when the casein is indeed the thing in cheese that causes addiction.
