I teach a large population of low income kids--age 13. They have both breakfast and lunch provided by the school each day. It is nowhere near vegan or healthy. Some of them know I'm vegan and they think it's really cool. I'll answer any of their questions about it, but I always tell them it's not something for them to worry about right now. Sorry, but not everyone can be vegan right now.

@@annaselbdritt7916 stop repeating a paper 4 vegan members of ADA wrote. ADA also has position papers suggesting diary and animal products to kids. Also on that paper it CLEARLY tells you that you need proper supplementation in order to sustain your diet which means that vegan diet IS NOT A COMPLETE diet.
If it was a healthy diet we wouldn't see vegan babies dying from malnourishment, Belgium and Italy wouldn't sentence families to prison time who decided to feed their kids vegan diet.

Almost nobody in the world has that option.

There are zero vegan grocery stores where I live either.

I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, and lived there until I was 34. I've lived in Austin, TX the past five years.
Both places are extremely vegan friendly. However, I'm just not someone that goes out to eat often and I never have been. I love cooking and it's much cheaper and most of the time I prefer my cooking to restaurants.
I guess the real privilege, to me, is eating out in general. If someone is coming to my house, they should be able to consume the vegan meal I cooked and if they feel otherwise, that's up for debate.

Being the only vegan in my friend group and family, I disagree on the ' refusing to eat where animals are being eaten' statement. Veganism is a personal choice, and as long as I am not forced to eat animal products, I'm fine. I want to be an example and not that one annoying person who needs special treatment every time you want to go out. As long as there are vegan options, I'll gladly join them wherever they want to go, and worst case scenario I can bring my own food. Of course, we also go to vegan restaurants and they don't complain, so why should I? I am happy to say that some friends and family members have started consuming less animal products, as they've realised that it's not actually that hard, and that's what matters to me. Making a positive impact and spreading the message without imposing anything is the best thing you can do.

I don't force them to eat gluten containing products, and am actually very proud to cook a meal they're able to eat, even though it's not a "normal" thing for my own family. Meanwhile, they specifically treat the food they prepare me with the same courtesy. We choose our family over the food that's in the cupboard.

Same here. I always make a point of going out with friends only if there are vegan options available at the place we're eating at, but if they want to order something non-vegan they can. I've had far better discussions result from ordering my usual vegan food and people being curious about why I do so, rather than excluding them from the get-go. It's also really amazing when people start catching on and purposely seek out veggie locations for my benefit knowing this - it shows me that they care.

Agree. I am close to my family, despite the fact that they are no where near even close to vegetarian. We've had numerous conversations about it over the years, and I don't expect them to ever give up meat. I grew up deeply religious and having large family dinners on the sabbath and holidays was really important. If I were to stop eating at tables where meat eaters were... I'd have to give up those family events. I enjoy cooking vegan dishes to share, and bringing them to the table is an opportunity for omnivores to try something new. My family has gotten more and more willing to try things over the years, which is only possible because I didn't exclude myself from meals.

I actually came on here with a similar example, spurred by the "nephew" hypothetical from @unnaturalvegan - my grandma died last month at 96. She was in home hospice for prior, and I volunteered to be her personal chef (while making a second dinner for myself).
I stuffed every dish with cream and cheese, made her favorite crab cakes, and even joined her request for "one last pizza together".
Her last meal was a pumpkin milkshake with about a pint of ice cream. I'm proud to have served it to her.
Cooking for the elderly (like this touching anecdote - enjoy your time with your grandma!) or infirm or eating disorders are just a few of the numerous grey areas, here. Life isn't black and white and this type of aggressive veganism does nothing to promote a cause. It only promotes a stereotype.

People do not understand that you can’t force veganism on people. People do not like to be told what to do especially with meat. All you can do is help. I’ve helped my family see that every meal doesn’t have to have meat. That’s a step. We need to focus on steps because people are stubborn especially in America. America loves their meat. This is especially true if you have a job where you're sitting all day. I don’t think the “if you have an exception you’re not allowed to say you’re vegan anymore” can be a realistic way to exist as a vegan... I’ve been vegan for 5 years and I do have an exception, as I think most people who are vegan do: medication is never vegan. It’s all tested on animals and often contains animal ingredients. We live in a world that is filled with animal exploitation and we have to navigate it in the best and least exploitative way we can but 100% perfection isn’t attainable... for anybody, I think. Like I know that’s usually grouped into “as far as it’s practicable” but if you think about it... it is a conscious exception. Also, strongly agree with you on reusing leather items (and wool for that matter). Might I add that imo a thrifted or re-used non-vegan clothing item does less damage to the environment than, as you pointed out, throwing these items away to buy a new “vegan” one. Especially with how bad a problem textile waste has become the way clothes are produced and just... the human exploitation behind it :( I watched a documentary on fast fashion last year, can’t really bring myself to buy from these big fashion store chains anymore (unless absolutely necessary but it hasn’t happened so far)

Also, about the vegan label - I will usually call myself a vegan to people I know or eat out with etc, but I occasionally eat eggs that I get from a friend who keeps a few hens in her backyard. They are not slaughtered and have plenty of space, so I see absolutely no reason not to. I feel like the avoidance of animal products is about exploitation of animals and supporting cruel industries according to the definition itself (?). Not consuming the eggs just to "stay vegan" without any ethical reasoning to support that decision does not make sense to me.
If I called myself a vegetarian people would expect me to be fine with milk and store bought eggs etc, so I still think vegan is the closest to the truth. It tends to anger people that I claim the label "out of convenience"; I know it's not very important, but I'm torn!

This is definitely a thought that I had during this video. I’ve been vegan for a little over two years, and none of my family nor friends (including my partner) is vegan. I still have meals with them (where they eat non-vegan food), and when my partner visits me, he buys eggs and chicken and keeps them in my fridge. I allow him to use my cooking utensils and equipment to prepare them (he is respectful of my diet overall though). While I can completely understand why people would find these practices disrespectful, I’ve tried to remember that everyone is on their own journey and has their own relationship with the environment, animals, food, their bodies, etc. And so many factors dictate that relationship (health, ability levels, gender, socioeconomic status, etc). While I can express my opinions, I don’t feel it’s my place to criticize (at least outwardly 😂) what they eat (especially since I hate when they criticize my diet 🙄). I’m not in their position, and I can’t speak to where they’re at. I can only control myself. I also realize that I live in a very non-vegan world and I don’t want to ostracize myself from people I love and care about and who I know ultimately care about me. I also recognize that I wasn’t always vegan and that my journey wasn’t perfect, so I should try to reserve judgement.

I do not cook meat for them, but I will make things with milk or eggs because I don’t have an issue with that. If that makes me a bad vegan, so be it lol my family comes first and I think I will always believe that. I thought I’d share my experience with watching Freelee:
When I was in early high school I started watching her videos, around the time I was developing a very serious eating disorder that nearly killed me a few years later. The way she put food on a pedestal of importance, as well as her sense of superiority revolving around her diet seemed fairly normal to me at the time. Watching Freelee is what got me into veganism, but I wish I had found it through anyone else, because I blindly believed her while in a very vulnerable place regarding food. She essentially taught me that if you’re underweight and vegan like her, your health is fine because you can’t get diabetes or heart disease (which is false). I truly believed I could live off of nothing but fruit and vegetables, which validated many of the lies my disorder told me. I am still vegan several years later and have completely changed my views on veganism, however the way she shames entire necessary food groups still affects me. After watching her videos frequently in the past, many of the things she’s said I still remember and can trigger destructive behavior. Freelee has at times made it very difficult for me to get her logic completely out of my head, and stay vegan for the right reasons. Shaming people for their diets does not create a happy healthy vegan world, it’s dangerously toxic to people’s relationship with food. Instead, we need to talk about veganism in rational terms, because what Freelee is doing honestly ruined my life in some ways. I am ultimately responsible for myself, but people who are in an extreme vulnerable place can easily be manipulated by her horrible logic.

She's not nutritionally informed and has always given inaccurate, dangerous advice. She has a very toxic, cultlike presence, and I sometimes still hear her words in my head when I'm thinking of food. I wish I had never gotten sucked into that and just followed the advice of registered dietitians and the latest nutritional information from the very beginning, instead of wasting so many years striving for an unhealthy goal.
It's funny you said that, because I always say that Freelee kind of ruined my life. I didn't find veganism through her, but found her videos early on in my journey. It's taken me the better part of a decade to find a healthy relationship with food and heal from a very destructive mindset.

In respect to the “buying non-vegan things for other people”, I don’t think it should be a problem. I can see why it seems disrespectful to you, but here is a different perspective: People are less likely to validate your veganism and WAAAAY less likely to even give a try to “your” food if they feel judged. Let’s say I’m going to a family event and I know I’m the only vegetarian/vegan there: if they ask me to stop and get some hotdogs and burgers to grill I’ll do it. I’ll also bring a veggie option, but I won’t impose my choice on them because I don’t want them to impose their choices on me. If my sisters want a very specific makeup pallet for Christmas, I’m getting them the one they want even if it ain’t vegan. They go through the trouble of finding vegan gifts for me. It doesn’t create a moral dilema for me because I am not the one asking for it/consuming it. I’m simply integrating their ways and mine in a respectful environment where neither of us feels obligated to adjust or judged by the choices.
At least that’s how I see it.

If i weren’t vegan, i still wouldn’t expect a muslim to bring pork to a barbecue or a jew something non koscher. I enjoy people that take the time to find options for me but i don’t expect them to do just like they shouldn’t expect for me to get something non vegan.

    • @HerrMisterTheo

Agreed. I mean, of course there are some things where I would agree that it's disrespectful. Say if they wanted you to grab a literal sheep head from the butcher (which is a thing, just in case you live in a culture where that's unheard of), I understand why as a vegan you'd say "Yeah, um, how about no". I as a meat-eater would more likely than not refuse, because that's just plain gross. But if you refused to grab me something like a chocolate bar, because it's not vegan, I'd go so far as to argue that you are being rude, not me. In a situation where sometimes I run your errands without complaining (say in the case of a significant other you cohabitate with), I'd expect the same from you. And if you refused to do me the favour and buy stuff for me, I'd probably reciprocate. Not that I'd see a relationship like that work out long-term anyway, but I think it's entitled and honestly borderline-abusive if you expect from me to do shit for you without being willing to return the favour.

I have some issues with how it's usually claimed to be the "cure" to diet culture, as I think it's a lot to ask that you know how to listen to your body when you've been overweight or obese for a long time. It's very often people recovering from restrictive eating disorders (anorexia, orthorexia etc) who talk about how great it is, but I don't think that necessarily applies to people who've had problems with eating too much/very unhealthy. And I say that as someone who was a very fat child and young adult.

It’s also interesting that people say it can be a cure for eating disorders, because I’m sure it may be helpful for people with anorexia, but no one mentions how damaging it can be for people with eating disorders like food addiction.
Intuitive eating may not be all bad or all good, but I don’t like how so many people just treat it like some miracle cure for anything.

@@catdragonrose2155 I love abbey, but I have allot of problems with how she approaches issues around obesity.
As someone who was overweight until I was about 25, and never learned about nutrition or good eating habits, I kind of resent her hand wavy approach to it. It just feels mocking. It took me over two years to lose weight on weight watchers and change my relationship with food. I didnt need to "ditch diet culture and eat intuitively" I needed to get my effing life together. My life and health have vastly improved being 25kg (50 pounds ish) lighter.
She has said several times that she views IE as something more complex than how she often refers to it, and I am genuinely looking forward to her series to see what she has to say.
But I still think it's irresponsible to just say, eat intuitively read the book, and then say no diets work. Fine, she had an eating disorder and I'm sure that was awful, but being very overweight or obese is also a serious problem which will have long term effects (even if you cant tell what they will be now) and that should be taken just as seriously.

The item itself was kind of lame, but not being able to refrain from eating things at home is LITERALLY a problem for lots of people whonover eat.
I am much better now than I was a few years ago because I've spent time PRACTICING not eating chocolate in the fridge, not finishing dessert once I'm full etc. It's super hard when you've never learnt how to have a healthy relationship with food.

I've tried a few times with the guidance of an aunt who is strictly vegan and had lived that way for over 60 years... but, I hate how sick the restrictiveness makes me since I have a fine-motor skill disorder. Certain textures make me gag/vomit and this is very true of certain powders and supplements, namely the protein ones... I just do not do well, and my mental health just dropped out on me when I cut out meat completely. So for me the thing about labels really resonates with me. I call myself a "consciousness omnivore"... meaning I do eat meat or things containing dairy a few times a week, but they're circumstances where I myself haven't purchased it, and I try to donate monthly to causes that support the production of supplements and powders in hopes that one day I could just make the complete shift without feeling like complete garbage.
On the night that I do eat meat, I'll usually I'll take dinner with my parents on those nights (as we share the same household and they would have purchased the meat for themselves anyway) and I have found that to be the best personal compromise. It's not ideal by far, but I thought I'd just add to the nuance of the conversation, as I did find this video (and many others I've been watching today) as insightful... particularly some of the "What I ate today" videos and guides... because there are some recipes I'm hopeful to try once I gather the ingredients even if I do omit the powders.

The Liberation Pledge is a Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) tactic! You wouldn't know from the website because they're trying to make it less associated with them (in order to attract more people), but they created that website. I was there when Wayne Hsiung (DxE's founder) announced it. They've hosted a few events about it, and they all wear those forks, but otherwise it's a bit hushed that it's them. The foot binding story came from Wayne. He never cited a source for this. When asked, he just said he read it somewhere. I specifically asked him because I also couldn't find anything about this food binding story- and he couldn't answer me.
They have never been discerning about what they base their tactics on, though. They actually set up an indoctrination program modeled after the Mormon Home Teaching Program (like, directly modeled after it- they have a somewhat prominent ex-Mormon organizer), and tried to hush up anyone who said anything about where it came from (it's called "DxE Connections," if you want to look into it - basically they pair each new person up with a "Connector" who will be their mentor, and this person sets up these hang outs with their "Connectee" and they have a huge database of data tracking it all - it's pretty appalling). Anyway, if you ever hear something like "Liberation Pledge" or "Dog Meat Please" or really any phrase from a vegan that sounds like someone made it up, or anything that sounds like it will alienate you from most of society... you can be sure it's DxE.
I'm happy to give you more insight on this/point you towards some good resources if you ever do a follow up video on DxE, I know quite a lot about them - I used to be involved in DxE scene (largely in their earlier days, before they started collecting felonies) and I know a looooot about them and their leadership, the good and the bad. Anyway, I love your work!!

    • @singlesidedampersand
      @singlesidedampersand 4 роки тому +2

@@narilias6621 The "speak out" culture they've cultivated definitely looks like street preaching, totally. They don't have strong Mormon connections, to be fair, just one ex-Mormon. But IMO the problem is that no one in their leadership said, "hey guys, maybe copying Mormonism isn't what we want to do." I think you're spot on that there's something pseudo-religious about them, though-they've (inadvertently, perhaps) formed a cult. There's a lot going on to analyze with their hero worship of their main leaders. They act like they are saints for the animal rights movement. Wayne in particular has awarded himself a semi-celebrity status, claiming he has some grand career as a law professor he's given up to do this (which is really a stretch). And now there's a sense they've fostered that he and his chosen inner circle are sacrificing their own freedom, picking up countless felonies, all for the sake of the animals (when really, it's because he gets off on feeling badass, seeming self-sacrificial, and being worshipped on Facebook). And if you don't think what they're doing is effective or positive, you get told "you must had thee animals." So they guilt-trip their members into supporting these tactics, and demonize any other vegan groups in the Bay Area.
Frankly, DxE meets most, if not all, of the criteria for being a cult-it's a closed community, they foster an us vs. them mentality, they use undemocratic decision making, they repress dissent, run denunciation sessions for members who defy Wayne, reject of ANY reason someone could give to leave the "community" as being valid (they usually claim the ex-member had mental health problems), push for homogenization of their members (those identical blue shirts), they have institutionalized alienation from friends & family (the Liberation Pledge), pressure to engage in actions that sit in legal grey zones, authoritarian leadership without accountability (their organizational structure is appalling), constant sacrifices required for the leadership on the part of members, no financial disclosures for the TONS of money they claim to need, absolute vindication of the leader from ANYTHING he has done wrong (and the same is done for the rotten men he protects), etc. They also have some pretty terrible power dynamics running unchecked, older men dating much younger women, that sort of thing. And now they put a woman in the supposed leader's position- and I feel damn sorry for her, because she's being used as a scapegoat for all of this unchecked foul behavior.
They demonize, marginalize and, retaliate against anyone who disagrees with them, and they convince all of their indoctrinated members to do the same. So I strongly urge anyone involved with them to think critically about their culture, and try to back out SLOWLY. They've been accused of a lot of pretty foul things, ranging from not paying sanctuaries money they promised to pay, to tokenizing Black & Latino/a members, to protecting men who have committed sexual crimes (I personally witnessed this), to accusing a Jew member of infiltration and stealing money and (I also witnessed this). They recently posted a video of an activist of theirs nearly being strangled to death and sustaining nerve injuries because of their stunts. It's NOT a group to mess around with. There are some really great people there, and like many others, I found friendships and meaningful experiences at their events before I realized just how toxic they were beneath the surface. They're a terrible representation of what animal rights activism should look like.

I'm a 22 year old university student who still live at home. Ive been vegan for a little over two years, and was vegetarian a year and a half before that. Since going vegetarian back in January of 2016, I've been cooking my own food every day, but the rest of my family still eat meat. Generally, the only rule I've established with them is that i don't want to help with their food, like cut up meat or cracking an egg, but I can't get away with much more than that. I mean, they're the ones who pay for groceries so I'm just grateful they're supportive of my dietary choices. If my parents both work late one night and ask me to buy groceries, then of course I'm gonna do that. At the end of the day, it's not my money. Restaurants here (stockholm, sweden) is harder. Ive only been to one fully vegan restaurant, so to "avoid" restaurants serving meat is not an option. I'm just thankful when I can find something to eat tbh.

Wow, this was a really cool concept (source video) and your video made some excellent points! As far as labeling goes, I don’t think it really matters what people choose to label themselves but I do think it matters if that in turn “muddies the waters” of food labeling. For example, I have always understood “plant based” to mean sans animal products. I am hearing of a number of people calling themselves “plant-based” to indicate that they eat mostly plant based and then eat non-vegan foods (dairy, eggs, fish, meat) once or a few times a week. Again, whatever they want to call themselves, fine-but, I have seen products in the store labeled “plant based” and bought them without checking the ingredients, only to realize later that it had dairy or egg in it (and then have to return it). For this reason, I think clearly defined labels have value.
Also, if I had it my way I would only ever go to vegan restaurants, but I live in a very suburban area with no vegan restaurants. I cook almost all my meals for myself & my vegan boyfriend (luckily I am a great chef 👩🏻‍🍳), but if I am with my non vegan family and they want to go out to eat, we will go to a restaurant that we know can accommodate me. While I don’t feel great spending money at a restaurant that profits off of animal suffering, I figure if there are enough other people like me eating at this restaurant over time, they might consider adding more vegan options on their menu to accommodate the growing demand.

I disagree - I think expecting someone to conform to your beliefs when you hang out with them is disrespectful. I never expect someone to order something vegan when I go out with them - that would be so absurd. It would be like if someone who was celiac expected me to also be gluten free. I remember one friend told me her other friend was vegan and would make a big fuss if she ordered something not vegan when she was with her and it really turned her off from wanting to hang out with this person. It does not make veganism look appealing when you impose your beliefs onto others.

This is such a great video and I found it really interesting to discover that despite being vegan for over 4 years, it turns out I actually have very relaxed views on it compared to other vegans. Perhaps I could be more actively trying to change the minds of others but I find that this doesn't actually work for me unless someone wants to get into a genuinely serious and intelligent discussion.
I also think (regarding Freelee's activism) that it's a difficult one to measure. Her platform is so large that she is originally the person who drew me to veganism based on the footage she was showing of animal cruelty. Perhaps I would've seen this elsewhere eventually but I was never really drawn to any crazy diets or the pseudoscience. That could be because I did a degree in Biochemistry and have been trained to think more critically? I think if you are someone that can be drawn to these crazy diets or you are in the mindset of being very keen to lose weight, you will always find something that isn't necessarily backed up by science. Be that raw vegan, paleo, carnivore diet etc! Just to be clear though, I am not defending Freelee's videos. I just think it's interesting that she was the person who turned me onto veganism despite how much I disagree with her.

So I decided try it (though my cooked meals weren’t always vegan/vegetarian then). And then once the season changed, I came to the conclusion that it would only make sense to eat like this during the summer months. So I just eat more fruits than usual in the summer versus other seasons (though not raw till 4)
For extremist like her, it depends on the type of person you are. If you’re a Yes Wo/Man then yeah it could be dangerous. But whenever I saw new ideas and I wanna try it, I usually think about how to adapt it to my preferences and predicaments. If I can’t then, I’d ignore it.
After experimenting on myself I find that eating mostly plant based + eggs here and there and baked goods (that may possibility have dairy/egg) works for me 🤷🏾‍♀️
I never understood why militant vegans like a Richard or Freelee are so judgey towards people who aren’t vegan but eat vegan 75-90% of the time. If I was into animal rights, I wouldn’t have beef (intentional pun) with someone who chooses to reduce their meat/dairy/egg intake versus someone who chooses to eat 100% meat lol.
