    • @KattReen

      The great thing about oatmeal is that you can quite easily sneak things in there that are pretty good for you without really making it any less yummy or that much more work. Like you can put some mixed seeds in a little tupperware container or something, and just mix a tablespoon or two of those into oatmeal, salads etc, that's a couple of extra grams of protein and some extra minerals with virtually no hassle. If that's still too many steps, protein powder is even more convenient.
      Not that I think oatmeal and nutbutter is a terrible snack/breakfast.

    It all stems from Freelee telling people “if you eat enough calories, you’ll get enough protein.” There was such awful advice being given in 2012, the vegan community can’t seem to leave it behind.

      Yes. Such a crazy concept. Like I could totally eat 1200 calories in just regular table sugar and I would be getting a whole 0% of my needed proteins. Not to mention any vitamins and minerals I need. It's so ridiculous to make a statement like that.

    • @hayleym1483
      @hayleym1483 3 роки тому +26

      Also you can eat 'enough protein' technically and not get enough amino acids at all. Like if you ate a ton of peanut butter you'll reach your protein needs but peanut butter alone doesn't have all the amino acids. GOTTA HAVE THAT SOY.

      @Ramiromasters 3 роки тому

      @GozerTheTraveller My intention here is friendly. What happens in veganism is like what happens with fasting, for a while people do good as long as they have reserves, and our bodies are designed to withstand 2-3 months with little to no food. So when you go vegan you can go for a long time with little to no nutrients like vitamin K2, D, D3, B12, good cholesterol, estrogen, testosterone, heme iron, Creatine, Carnitine, Carnosine, etc. Because your body will get it from your bone marrow, bones, muscles, fat, and organs, by the time your doctors see that something is missing from the blood its because you are truly out of all and I mean all reserves. But this is not the end, your body is so damn good that it will cannibalize part of your bone, brain, organs, muscles and even your intestinal tract for those missing nutrients! But you are excuse me Fucking dissolving... So, sure today your blood work looks fine, doesn't mean you are fine ok. You have 1 body and to date nobody can replicate your organs, if they go wrong nobody can help you.

      That is what she is saying as well, she said you dont have to have tons of protein with every meal as long as you eat enough throughout the day in total. But There is a dangerous amount of vegan influencers/content creators spreading actual lies about how much protein is in certain foods or not realizing how little protein they are eating themselves, and then telling people who are using their instructions and recipes to eat healthy and balanced on a vegan diet so it’s not just the person making the recipe or What I ate today-videos who are the ones ending up not having enough protein. Then people complain about vegans being malnourished or not feeling satiated on a vegan diet and instead of fixing their diet they just give up veganism.

    • @EmmaRules2010
      @EmmaRules2010 3 роки тому +1

      Though the channel is not inherently promoting these specific meal ideas to be "high protein" or "balanced", I still think there needs to be a level of responsibility when posting meal ideas to an influential audience on a platform like UA-cam. You are definitely right in saying not all meals need to be balanced, I am sure every person - including myself are guilty of that.
      But the focus primarily is on the vegan viewers watching and taking these lunch ideas without considering protein (when already breakfasts for some vegans aren't particularly high in protein anyway, meaning dinner has to account for all of that protein for the day - which is a tad more than someone eating a standard American diet). It doesn't help also with a portion of the vegan community down playing the importance of protein also. So I think Unnatural Vegan has an extremely good point in saying that protein should be considered and implemented conciously in meals. So to promote said meals that lack an important macronutrient could be harmful, and I don't think the risk is worth it.

    • @christina7454
      @christina7454 3 роки тому +1

      If only one meal a day has a decent protein source it's really hard to meet your needs when you're vegan. Unless you're using a mock meat (which a lot of vegans call "junk food" and treat it like it has no nutritional value) or 1-2 scoops of protein powder. Beans have a lot more volume and calories (when you want the same amount of protein) than meat so you'd have to eat a *huge* dinner if breakfast, lunch and snacks are all low protein. And a lot of recipes are like that unfortunately. It's pasta, rice or bread and vegetables (or fruits) mostly. Breakfast is often avocado toast, oats and fruit or a fruit smoothie with almond milk. :/

    I guess once you have a target macro ratio, "high protein" is everything that has a significantly higher protein percentage than the one you're targeting overall? (i.e. What can you eat more of to get to your desired protein ratio, if you're currently below for the day?)
    If you want 20% of your total calories to be protein, and sometimes eat stuff that is 5% protein, that can only be balanced by something that is way above 20% (either a small amount of 50% protein stuff, or a lot of 25% protein meals).
    And the further below target some of your meals are (e.g. having only toast & jam or a fruit smoothie for breakfast), the higher above your target the bar for thinking of something as "high protein" would have to be. Not an RD, so beyond the obvious math, I have no idea how useful that is in practice.
    Oh, also I guess since lysine (a particular amino acid of protein) is a special but related consideration for vegans, maybe it's useful to have the bar a bit lower for high-lysine foods to call them "high protein"? I think that's the way Messina & Norris frame it, IIRC.

Quinoa is the only veg food to provide a complete EAA profile. Only problem is it doesn't all unlock and absorb very well so you need to add the amaranth and spelt to back up the proteins that are a little more difficult to access. what really makes me sad about the protein in veganism debate is that it's so often clearly derived from just... not wanting to eat calories. Once, I calculated the average amount of protein I eat as a vegan vs. my carnivorous dad and I actually ate MORE than he did. The trade-off is that I probably also consume more calories, or even fat, and that scares people who are unconsciously looking for a diet rather than a lifestyle. In this day and age of body positivity and awareness, no one wants to admit how entrenched we still are in diet culture. No one is really at fault for their fear of calories at this point; we're just afraid to admit it still lingers.

      That could be, but honestly, she did a protein video years ago and put some youtubers diets into cronometer. Aside from one person they were all eating 2000 or more calories and still low on protein and essential amino acids.

    • @tatianalazo4387
      @tatianalazo4387 3 роки тому

      The reason you eat more than your carnivorous father is because your body is not absorbing the amino acids from the sources of protein your getting. Your body has a very difficult time absorbing certain amounts of protein. Also meat has a higher nutrient and caloric density so you don't have to eat as much to give your body the nutrients it needs.

    I've just started trying to eat predominantly plant based again. One of my bigger problems with eating protein is it's hard to make beans taste good in only so many ways without having to do any kind of cooking. I get depressed a lot so having to make food that I will want to eat but not having to put a lot of energy and make sure it's adequate is really difficult to do. And having to adjust my taste buds to the healthy food but then not being able to maintain eating healthy when I'm depressed makes me have to keep readjusting my taste buds and so I usually just stop trying.
    Would you be willing to do a video on addressing depression and healthy vegan eating? I think this is a barrier that has yet to be addressed.
    edit to add, I also have ADHD which makes maintaining new habits very difficult. It's a multi-headed issue for myself.

      Similar issue here. For me it helps to focus less on eating healthy and more on what I want to eat. Like, what is it about a chicken curry I'm after when I crave it and how can I satisfy that without the chicken? There's no easy answers here since it's about personal taste but it's worth thinking about.

      It really depends on what you like and how much you can do when you're in a bad place. If you have freezer space prepping some high protein stews, curries or pasta sauces that you can just microwave is probably helpful.* Using protein powders in a smoothie (or even in a dip), there's protein pasta and protein wraps too. I get it though. When I'm feeling really bad I get whatever I feel like (takeout, some sausage rolls to quickly put in the oven, a (savoury) pie that goes in the oven etc.
      *Edit: prepping when you have enough energy to have on hand when your mental health gets worse

    'All of those meals and snacks look real delicious! 😍 The UA-cam channel Veggies & More has got a lot of practical nutrition tips and advice for raising vegan/plant-based kids! She is a registered dietitian who raises her own daughter vegan and her website morethanjustveggies has got free resources and a newsletter 😊 One small habit that can give such a boost in important healthy fats (omega 3), minerals (iron) and vitamins is to add a teaspoon of ground flax seeds or hemp seeds to each of their meals. (I always add a tablespoon of ground flax to my own oatmeal.) Another UA-cam channel from vegan dietitians about children's nutrition is Plant-Based Juniors 😚🌿

    I assume for bean chips you’re talking about Beanitos and I love them! I have had a (documented by my doctor and allergist) corn intolerance for about 10 years and missed tortilla chips so much until those came on the market. For me they’re just a delicious corn chip substitute but they are much higher in fiber and protein than regular tortilla chips. And because of that, they’re great as a snack with salsa, guacamole, or even hummus. I also use them to make nachos and also to top taco salads, chili, or Mexican style soups. They’d be a great higher-protein chip alternative in a kid’s school lunch or snack too. I think they taste pretty close to a regular corn chip, but I haven’t had corn chips in 10 years so what would I know.

I do eat a little more protein than I should even considering the fact that once I am done losing weight (I lost 70 lbs. over 5 years, partly because of eating vegetarian twice a week - I like tofu, but I do like quark cheese as well) I want extra 10 lbs. of muscles. However, I do not go crazy with protein because many longevity (lifespan and healthspan) experts believe that too much protein does make you age faster.

The FAD and FAD-like diets create all-or-nothing type of thinking. It is wrong in a diet, and for majority of people, it is wrong in fighting or managing addiction. About 70% of addicts will relapse. The difference is how well are they prepared to get up and keep on going after a ( or every ) relapse.

    I think you're missing that different people have very different calorie requirements, but not very different protein requirements. Personally, I would consider Hannah's snacks "high protein" because I would eat an enormous amount of each of them. By percentage of calories they are not high protein, but I'm a breastfeeding woman who exercises a lot and has a naturally high metabolism in the first place. I cannot get by on fewer than about 2600 calories in a day. I can easily down 3000 a day without gaining weight, and I feel really good when I do. Doesn't change that I really only need about 55g protein per day. If I eat almond butter with apples, I'm eating AT LEAST 4-5 tablespoons of almond butter, and I won't blink about the calories. I'll get about 15g of protein, which is over a quarter of my daily protein requirement. Really not bad for a snack. I realize not all people have my calorie requirements, so a balanced diet will mean something different to them. But I'm guessing Hannah is more like me, and so she probably does know what protein is, and she probably does get enough of it on her current diet, just based on what she showed. It would help if influencers would include specific amounts along with the calories, but I think they're concerned about triggering people with EDs and such, which is also understandable.
