Thank you for this. I messed up with replacing this the first time, and realized from your video that lining up the pegs upon reassembling the drive I had not done at all the first time. It took me 20 minutes of swearing, but it is working and has given my system a second life. I did replace the whole laser assembly (rails too), found the part for less than $20 on Amazon (a new drive would have been $60+ and potentially have pairing issues).
Before, my system would freeze after 20 or 30 minutes of blu ray playback. Now it is working fine. I also swapped out the 80 GB drive for a 500 GB one, and cleaned it out properly. Looking forward to another decade of good use!

I'm a little gun shy about swapping PS3 lasers. The last time I did it I lost the ability to play back CDs and DVDs for some reason.
OMG I have a FAT PS3 with this same problem, and I could find nothing about it. The laser was probably swapped or something before I got it.
@@lyndellkell I actually don't know why this confused me, I know why it is.
A Blu-Ray drive has two lasers: one for CDs/DVDs and one for Blu-Ray discs. The CD/DVD laser can die out without the Blu-Ray laser going dead. You can observe this if you ever took apart a BD drive. In PS3s in particular the CD/DVD laser seems to die out faster than the BD laser.

@@SolidSonicTHI have conflicting information on this matter. My 60 GB original had worked fine for four years until some games started freezing for no reason. It was always disc games so I figured it was the laser. I can't remember experimenting whether it was BD games vs CD (PS1) or DVD (PS2), because I don't have many of either of those. I did have several video discs however, and CD and DVD played perfectly whereas bluray movies died some twenty minutes in. Eventually nothing BD worked, not even to identify an inserted game. So, the BD laser was dead. For later PS3 fat models as well as slim and most obviously the superslim (since the laser is exposed), the laser is actually two lenses, one for CD/DVD and the other BD. It has been said that if the laser dies in the old fat, every function dies. Well, apparently not. I replaced it with another combined KES-400A, not the split laser 410A.
I did everything in this and the disassembly video. Replaced the battery, upgraded to ssd, cleaned the whole machine up. I am still having problems with the disc drive. I accidentally ripped the silver cover paper of the ribbon cable when taking off the tape. Does the silver cover matter ? The drive is not spinning the discs anymore. It takes them in but its not spinning. Could it be the ribbon cable or Could the cover of the drive be at the wrong spots. Im trying to put the cover on different ways and move the plastic parts to find how it should be. Thanks for the videos !
It was apparently about the left side where you use the knife before closing. Got it now. Thanks! The ribbon cable was fine.

Well done replacing the laser. . But it was a motherboard issue because of overheating cpu from previous owner hours of use.

I have a similar problem and would appreciate your opinion: i have the older fat ps3 with the purple laser. When I insert a clear disc I can see the laser turning on and off, but it does start spinning.
Is it possible that the pins of the mechanism aren’t aligned properly and that this can be the cause, or is it more serious and something needs to be replaced?

It may have been just the cpu processers in the motherboard because the thermal paste got overheated with previous owner.
This is a very good video in explaining these issues. Mine is a purple and red laser. Is that bad? I ask because I accidentally bought a 60pin when I have a 24. If it’s the laser i think I can transfer them.
Hi there, I’ve changed my laser for the same on a ps3 fat 60gb (backwards) model. I put it all back together and everything worked. It’s now an hour later and not working. I tried that test and only seeing red light. Disc goes in fine but no spinning from what I can see nor does it register the game or dvd now. Any ideas please? Connector loose maybe now?? Strange as it was working

Thank you for the video. You say the laser KES-410A and KES-400A are not interchangeable but have you tried putting a KES-400A laser lens as a replacement into a PS3 Fat which has KES-410A? I ordered a replacement and I did not know it would be the older laser lens model so I am not sure if I should now replace it...
I have not tried to swap a 410 with a 400. I have read from multiple sources that they are not interchangeable. I believe the 400 uses a single laser and the 410 has 2 separate lasers for BD and DVD/CD.

There are several vendors on eBay and AliExpress. I just picked one. AliExpress is cheaper, but it takes longer. Shipping from China.

I've got the 80gig back compat one. Recently it has stopped playing PS3 and Blu Rays but will still play ps2 and ps1 games. Would it be a question of just replacing the bluray drive. Thank you
You must have an early A or B model of the PS3, if it plays PS2 and PS1 games. I would still start with the laser. The laser housing contains 2 separate lasers, one for DVD's and CD's (for the PS2) and a another laser for BD's (PS3). It could be only the Blu-Ray laser has failed. Replacing the Blu-Ray disc drive is quite complicated. Do that only as a last resort.
Does anyone know if I need a new blu ray drive if my 60GB doesnt play ps1, ps2, CD's and DVD's? It only plays ps3 and blu ray disc. Thanks!

Hi I have a cech03 ps3 and It wont read games or blu Ray's but it will read normal DVDs what is wrong laser or something different any help would be great thanks
PS3 games are on bluray discs. If the PS3 is reading DVD discs but not Bluray discs then it is most likely the Laser.

So no blue ray reader is compatible with the fat ps3?
The control card in the bluray player and the PS3 are "matched". If you replace the bluray player, you must keep the control card from the original. If the control card is bad, you must replace the control card and "remarrry" it to the bluray player. The remarry process is described in this link: ua-cam.com/video/a3Py7IRfv7w/v-deo.html

Only the first version of the PS3 was backwardly compatible with the PS2. I assume that is what you have. PS3 discs are bluray, PS2 discs are DVD. If it will play DVD discs, but not Bluray disc, you may have a bad laser. Also, in the first version of the PS3, there was a separate hardware for the PS2. It could be that the fall damaged only the PS3 circuits.

My ps3 plays cd ps2 games, ps3 games, and dvd movies. It will not play ps2 dvd games.
