This is a great walkthrough, thanks for taking the time to make this! Im absolutely just going to order the whole assembly. While it's already apart; you think I should go deeper and replace the thermal paste and clock battery as preventative maintenance or is that probably unnecessary if everything was working cool and fine before? I got this model for Christmas in 2010 so I'm sort of attached to it by now. haha

thanks for the help buddy, I have a 2501b but it was basically identical, replaced my drive for 15$ and have access to my ps3 disc library again at a reasonable price
edit: the first time I put it back together I forgot the small white gear, thankfully I didn't have to take out too much to put that back in.

DVD PLAYERS last for 10 years without a laser problem but not the ps3 laser? Do I sense Sony wants their customers to buy a new ps3, ps4 or ps5? How deceiving that is.
I think that is built in to the system. But then again a laser in the PS3 or 4 are used a lot more then a blue ray player. There's times a game system is on 10 to 12 hours a day for 5 or 6 days a week where a blue ray player mat only be used a couple hours a week.

If I bought the whole brand new deck with everything can I just swap the whole drive?
Yes. You have to use your circuit board out of your old drive. I can't remember if you do or not, it has been a long time since I changed one. I just rebuild the one that I have.

I have a issue with my PS3 Slim sounding like a printer when it reads discs I have this problem with mine where it echoes in the entire room and the sound is even louder than the audio from the game itself. The sound is constant during gameplay.. not only when loading the game up or something big is happening in the game.. but when you just stand still in a room with nothing going on in the background. This sound is unbearable wondering if you have a solution for this and i have the 320gb PS3 slim.
Did you replace the laser deck? if not it sounds like one of the gears on the deck is having a hard time moving the laser.

@@arif187 What you are hearing is the laser deck moving the laser back and forth reading the disc. Some will be louder because the laser has to move more to read the information. I have had a lot of the phat-style PS3 do the same thing. That is the nature of the beast.
Hopper I just put the replacement in my console and it's not powering the disc drive or reading the disc at all please you got to help me
Do I need desolder the thing of the laser for this console yes or no?
Normally there is no antistatic point to desolder on the replacement decks. Check all your ribbon cables are seated in all the way.
@@RetroGamingWithHopper I just found out a bigger problem the motor sensor thing that makes the disc go in is not working or accepting the disc all and I cannot fix it, and the console recognizes like there is a disc in the system but then I press the eject button and still it won't accept the disc!
The only other option would be to buy a replacement disk drive entirely! And the magnetic round thing that makes the disc spin didn't spin at all I don't know why!

@@michaelrodriguez2829 When you insert the disc can you hear anything, like a motor spinning? Like it's trying to take in the disc.

@@michaelrodriguez2829 I was asking because there is a little white gear in the corner of the drive. When you take the drive apart it can fall out and you will not notice.
