Sony made pieces of shit back then like PlayStation All Stars and Tokyo Jungle. Not the best time for PlayStation exclusives The former was a Super Smash Bros ripoff and the latter looked like a PS2 game in 2012 🤦♀️😅
@@CreativeWM_Personal 2012 was a garbage year for PlayStation exclusives, aside from Everybody's Golf 6 and Wipeout 2048 Then again, Assassin's Creed 3 was a game I greatly dislike in retrospect and it released in the same year
For anyone just wanting access to PS2 games, I was able to get both a PS3 Slim and PS2 Slim for less than the price of a backwards compatible launch PS3.
I used to own the very first batch of a PS3. Had the PS2 chip in it, and a chrome trim on the front of the console. My PS3 stopped working after 12 months and Sony said they could either take away the PS3 and give me another replacement. Or I'd wait 3 weeks so they could fix mine. I took the replacement model as I couldn't wait 3 weeks to go back on it. Big massive mistake. The replacement model was the one with the removed PS2 chip and with a grey trim.
@@garethlloyd1445 That sucks for you, when my GameStop refurb PS3 died in 2011 (YLOD with a Blockbuster CoD MW3 disc in it no less), I sent it in to them and they sent me back the same exact model, looked like it'd been completely untouched, with the 500 GB hard drive I'd installed in the old PS3 already installed in the new one, and with the disc in a CD sleeve. I mean this thing ended up better in every way than the one I sent in. Not a single buff, scratch, hand or finger print.
I loved the launch PS3 as far as design. It really felt and looked like the most expensive piece of hardware under the TV....which it was, but it at least looked it.
Honestly I got some mad appreciation for you still making videos about the PS3. Such a cool console. Recently got a fully modded CECHB01 and I love it. CFW, new fan, new thermal paste, some extra thermal padding, it’s been running very cool which is great.
I have a modded Slim model, I use it to play delisted games and games that are still available but I'm not sure of purchasing (i.e. games that are central to PS1's identity but I'm not sure that I'd like them like Breath of Fire)
The best part of the SSD upgrade is how snappier and smoother the XMB was. It did slightly improve loadtimes in games, less so for earlier ones, and more so for the ones released by it's end of cycle that were significantly bigger in size. Also, it runs cooler and requires less power to run so it helps reduce the systems overall temperature. The catch is, it's not gonna make almost any difference if you're playing the game off a disc, the real visible difference is if your games are digital. But SSDs are much cheaper now so it's not a bad idea to get one.
Man every single piece of your content is constantly amazing. Thank you for this! Helps a lot and a great video covering everything in soo much details!! Appreciate a lot!
I've recently started collecting for PS3 given its amazing value on games. I'm 26 and I feel it's the right balance of great games, nostalgia but not absolute potato graphics so I'm loving it. Thank you very much for posting Ryan!!
There's just something about the ps3/xbox360 generation of games i feel like it was the golden age of gaming so many great titles and online play had a presence but local and couch co-op was still a very big part of gaming also being im 25 turning 26 this year🤣 this was the main era of gaming i remember so the Nostalgia is so real how I wish we could all go back to greater times.
Same man . I had like a 10 year gap from PS3. Really enjoying the console. I’ve been dipping into some of the non gimmicky PS move titles recently . Two arrived today Child of Eden and De Blob 2 . Some good shooters as well like Dead Space Extraction which comes with limited edition Dead Space 2 also Resi 5 Gold Edition !
Me too... I recently bought a PS3 again, after having sold it when the PS4 came out. Also sold my game collection, so I'm starting all over again, and I'm kinda loving it :p
@@kabba4575 Weird how different opinions can be. For me it was the worst Playstation/ Xbox generation. It was this weird transition from low resolutions to the higher ones but games still looked very jaggy and with many games still beeing 30fps the experience was sometimes horrendous. This time period was also the rise of military shooters and I've never liked those. Especially because many games had that ugly brownish/ yellowish tone over it. In the end I've liked the Xbox360 way more because of Gears, Oblivion and Crackdown but ultimately the PC was kinda the best place in this time period. Sadly the golden age of PC gaming started to diminish with the rise of the PS4 and now with the new console gen and prices for parts, PC gaming for me is dead (I only play older games on it). The golden Playstation era for me was PS2 most definitely. I mean holy shi* we got GTA3 in 2001 which changed videogames forever, we got MGS2, Burnout and even EA published really good games back then.
Too bad gamestop won't buy any PS3 games. A month or so ago, I had some PS3 games that I didn't play much at all, and some were duplicates. Tried bringing it to a local gamestop, and all the offers were rejected. Maybe it'll be better in the long run, like wait until they're vintage or expensive or something and then others will finally see the importance of getting those now, waiting, and selling them like 10x the original price
@redx I pretty much stopped buying them... I used to have a few a month back when PS3 was out... Now a couple full price games a year if lucky... I got gt7 before that was cold war... 1 a year getting too. Games are just a rip off as are the in game buying practices.
I remember watching movies in 3D! Whatever happened to that technology? I wouldn't mind trying out a newer version of the Playstation TV 3D 2 with 4k 60hz.
If you have a PSVR, it can play 3D movies natively. It's a carryover functionality from Sony's 2011 product, the Personal 3D Viewer, which looks a lot like a PSVR prototype.
I nearly bought the Sony PlayStation 3d TV. I think the seller still has it for sale for £100 in North Manchester, UK. I first looked at reviews and UA-cam videos from only a couple of years ago. Not much for connectivity or 3d game content. The biggest concern is that apparently they are very unreliable and easy break. I think I only wanted it just to own it and would have used it maybe in general? Another issue with 3d is that I have my left eye stronger than my right. So this made 3d look double vision. It worked but I either had to see the up close character in double and distance fine, or change the settings so the characters up closer were fine with the background double vision. I found never get it to find the middle.

I'm amazed at how concise and well-organized this video is. Most console buying guides I see are a little jumbled, don't go into as much detail on model #'s, and/or are long af, but this one is very accessible. Long live the PS3! Also, a quick personal rec; Echo Night is one of those rare $500+ PS1 games I would suggest getting on the PSN store. It's one of From Software's earlier titles, and it's a great game. (Just don't expect Dark Souls-like combat, lol.)
For anyone doubting the use of an SSD on the PS3, I still use my launch fat PS3 which I upgraded to a 1TB SSD about 5 years ago. It still works like a charm and games load much faster than on my PS3 slim with a 500gb hard drive. Worth it!
just picked up my 4th back compat ps3, 2 of them bit the dust. I gotta say, I love the look of the original models with the chrome, they aged so well. Great vid! I had one of the memory card adapters for the ps3 and remember getting it for $8 on clearance at toys r us, can't believe the original release date was over 15 years ago, makes me feel super old!
Seeing how all of your data and content is organized in your PS3 spanning from the 2000s to mid 2010s makes me so jealous, I had a lot of data from my childhood in the 2010s but idiot me formatted the PS3 and lost everything, the memories and fotos/eyecreate content, the games I used to player dating back to 2011and videos is what was most important cuz it captured my childhood day by day. It's heart wrenching to this day that I could be stupid enough to even click on the format utility. So sad.
Some of Sony’s earlier 4k TVs with 3D actually supported the simulview feature. Not many games utilized it, but I thought I’d note this in case anyone was interested in a larger screen size :)
@@chauvintookaknee4blm268 If you’re asking if televisions that support Simulview also support regular 3D, then yes! If you’re asking if The Puppeteer supports 3D, then also yes!
@@chauvintookaknee4blm268The last 3D TVs to be manufactured were 5-6 years ago. Because of this, unlike normal 4K televisions which degrade in value every year (because new ones with better features come out), 4K 3D TVs might hold their value more (as 3D is a missing feature from current televisions, even if the rest of the TV’s features aren’t up to date). Personally, I’d recommend waiting 1-2 years to see if 3D gets added back in after the release of “Avatar: The Way of Water” releases.

One of the biggest concerns re-raised is the timeline of game access via PSN and the system battery issue on PS3. I would imagine that if Sony dumps connectivity to the PS3 there will be significant backlash, hopefully ending in Sony leaving it accessible. Fantastic video, lots of great stuff here!
@@SavagePatch115 Considering that PS3 is the bulk of their library for PS Now (or PS Plus Premium now I guess) I don't see it going away as long as that remains the case. At very least, they will want PS Now customers to be able to sync trophies.

An essential and very helpful video for PS3 fans! I have a PS3 Super Slim and I’m very satisfied with it but I was scammed when buying a DualShock 3. The information in this video with help me a lot.
Now looking back in time, the PS3 must have been the ultimate console of all times, you can play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games, listen CDs, watch movies in DVD and BluRay, even streaming like Netflix or Crunchyroll, access to the network, like Google and connectivity, free online, apps like Spotify, trophys, 3D support, move, camera, a top resolution at the time, at 1080p, a controller with gyroscope, and wireless, if you think about all these things for the time of release this is definitely the ultimate console of its time
@@anotherguy12 Xbox is an amazing console, but I’m talking in that time, and the competitor was the Xbox 360, that only could read DVDs and CDs, not Blu-ray, and the videos were on a low resolution, at 1080p It looks like 480, and only a handful of the Xbox Classic can be played by backwards compatibility, and of course, the UI was so different at that time, the control was more ergonomic, but didn’t had gyroscope, or any other additions, obviously, today all of that it’s on the Series X, even in the XO, but, again, in that time no one had that kind of technology, it was so ahead of its time
I bought my PS3 in 2005 I believe, and it died a few months ago. 19 years. Not a bad ride for a console. I definitely got lucky. I remember buying it for the same reason I bought all my consoles. To play resident evil games. A lot of my games were downloaded from PSN, so I'm debating investing in another PS3 (I don't have a PS4 or a PS5) because I wonder how long I will have access to my digital content I bought from Sony ?
Awesome recap! I love the PS3, and since it's been impossible to get a PS5, I'm playing through its library right now and having a blast. Folklore is excellent, by the way. 👍
One thing that can help for anyone trying to get a BC PS3. Since the early models heat up quickly. As Mystic said Replacing the Thermal Paste is a Must for these systems but I would also like to add that buying a 19 blade fan is great for replacing the 15 blade fan that already comes in the system. It does a better job pushing the heat out and cooling the inside of the system.
I agree, I stocked up like 3 years ago on 2 working 60GB's. My original which I played thousands of hours playing black ops and mw2 with the boys in my teenage years (not to mention gran turismo 5 as well for a long time and all other golden titles, red dead redemption etc) Then it got YLOD, then it got fixed, YLOD again, fixed, YLOD... I don't know wtf to do anymore. HMU if you know any solution or if that one is just dead for ever..
@@henrik1743 It has something to do with capacitors. Those models are ALL a ticking time bomb dude. I know it sucks, but just let it go. It would be cheaper for you to just get a regular Slim/Super Slim PS3 plus a PS2 versus buying another BC fat PS3.
@@henrik1743 It's not the capacitors. It's the RSX either dying or the solderballs cracked and didn't work. The capacitors themselves are very good actually. They can last a very long time. The only way to fix the yellow light of death long term is to reball with lead-free solder and a 40nm RSX chip that requires a few modifications so the system can read the newer chip. Watch RIP Felix's video "PS3 Yellow Light of Death." He goes into massive detail on what happens during the YLOD. He also goes over the misconceptions that have plagued the PS3 since the YLOD first happened, and goes over the recent innovative reballing repair method for a fat PS3 working with a 40nm RSX chip. The newer RSX chips are the only things that will save these early PS3s. The good news is that there's more 40nm RSX chips than backwards compatible PS3s. The bad news is that these early PS3s will be extremely rare in 10-15 years. Especially one with a 40nm RSX. They will be highly sought after when the PS3 is considered retro.
Personal experience I have had the last version of the ps3 the super slim and that console was incredibly well built and sturdy and I have had it since 2013 and it runs perfect to this day , as well I found the second flat matte model on the side of the road on pickup took it home cleaned it plugged it in and she works perfect

I love your ps3 console reviews. I have similar passion with ps3 as the way it is. Question for you and other people, does 65 is really unreliable as well?
My dad got me a ps3 slim at launch and it still works to this day it crashes very rarely but it works like a dream still great to go back and play Gran Turismo 6 and Uncharted 3
Gosh! I needed this video like a week or two ago. I spent weeks investigating which ps3 model to buy all over the internet and I ended up with a Slim. It is actually my first console and I'm waiting to find some games I'm interested in to try it out! I cleaned the controllers deeply and test everything I could in the console but until I have a game I don't know if it runs okay. I think I got a pretty good deal. It's a 160gb (or so), it was in pretty good condition and had two original dual shock 3. It came with 4 games that I really don't care about much (fifa) and it came with a remote controller very much like your standard tv remote but it is Bluetooth! I found it strange. All this for $50 :) I'm now going to watch your vid! I want to know if I made a good deal and also I enjoy your videos very much!
I replaced the 320gb HDD in my 3001B with a 1tb momentus sshd and loaded it up with movies, music and games. I loved streaming movies from my phone's sd card too once I discovered bubbleupnp. Very impressive machine for it's day, the ps3. I want to get a 25xx series and try out cfw, too many other projects though!
The PS3, for what it is, is still a very interesting and surprising old box of bolts. Here's a funny story. Right before the pandemic, I got a super slim with no controller for 30$, what a steal, and a genuine controller for 10$. What. A. Steal. Little by little i was catching any game that caught my attention, and some dude wanted to swap me my copy of Oblivion GOTY, for his kinda rare reprint of Demon's Souls. I got oblivion for 5$, and I really wanted to play it, but I had my eyes on demon's souls for a while, so I accepted. Well, guess which remake was announced shortly after. Guess which game skyrocketed in prices since a PS5 is both a pain in the ass to find and prohibitively expensive in loads of places.
Just picked up a PS3 super slim. I missed out on the PS3 generation as I stuck with the Xbox 360 so it's so fun diving into games I have missed out on.
I use a 1tb SSD in my ps3 slim and it's a great improvement. It improves load times and helps with graphics loading in faster. The biggest improvement is the menu. No more lag👍 I did try the hard drive from my PS4 pro but couldn't see any difference.
That's because it's still a hard drive so you wouldn't get any difference. With that said though it's funny you did that because I moved my PS4 drive into my fat PS3 after the drive that was inside it died, and I upgraded the PS4 to 1 TB.
SSDs also for longevity, hdd dies out quicker but we’re talking about years and depending the amount of usage. But still having a ssd is still better for just having a better storage if can be afforded
I just bought for $120 on Craigslist the MGS4 bundle with 28 games and 2 controllers. It comes complete with its box that one with snake and the ps3 on the front and it looks sick. I was so lucky.
I see someone has great music taste. The Bravery - Believe is a great rock song with amazing drums. And I also see The Cure(one of the best bands of all time) and The Shins!
Very cool, I didn't even know the PS3 could recognize generic USB joysticks. Just used a third-party USB DualShock 2 clone though some games are having trouble recognizing it in the main menu and driving games do not seem to recognize the L2/R2 buttons.
Great vid, I keep going back & forth if I want to buy a PS3 for the 3rd time in my life and it was nice to watch this. There were some great games on that console.
I went with a slim 320gb for 80€ and then I found a backwards compatible for only 70€. It's been very reliable but i don't play for long hours and changed the fan speed

Yeah, that's something that has impressed me as well. He is really good in ad-libbing freely for his LTPS videos, which I love. For some of the segments like in this video, you can hear a change in tone when he reads from his script. It's not bad, but you can hear it's rehearsed/polished which makes it sound less free. MVG does the same but is also not bad. There are plenty of channels that only read from scripts and it sounds terrible.
I've played with the non-OEM models and honestly, I can't really tell the difference. The OEM one that I had was a bot worse but that's because there's a lot of usage from them, much older. If people want a great PS3/PS4 Elite controller, the Astro C40 is a great choice especially with the fat models that have 4 usb ports. It's wireless USB and any given USB controller works on PS3.
@@henrik1743 It does PS4/PS3/PC and PS4 for PS5. It is indeed expensive, I suggest you get it at a discount from Best Buy, The Source or wherever. It is however the Ultimate experience. The build quality is extremely solid and it's modular, meaning you can switch where the analog sticks are and even make it a left handed controller by swaping the face buttons. It also has 2 back buttons programmable only from a PC with analog programmable throw. Genuine New OEM PS3 Sony controllers go for 100$+. They are not worth it. @@ron6505 Unfortunately no. Maybe there's an update or something, a mod, you can install to make it work. One thing I think you missed: The Superslim came with or without a hard drive. For those without, it was 12 GB of internal flash storage instead. This will quickly run out. You can therefore buy a hard drive separately and install, BUT you need to buy the HDD cradle for that, which is a special product not often spoken about. It should be cheap, around $12-$17, and while people claim you can build your own using a pizza carton for bottom support only, I definitely don't recommend it. The flash superslim console is dirt cheap however (I got mine brand new in store for $100) so if you know you won't satisfy with 320 GB or something, why pay more for a drive you're gonna replace anyway? When my PS3 fat died, I bought a superslim and via hardware backup management and what have you, ended up with a flash drive superslim with 1 TB HDD. That lasts me forever: I have about 60 PSN games, quite a number of installed disc games, a big mp3 library, and several seasons of low-HD video clips, and despite trying to push everything in there I'm still only at 60% usage. Spend that extra dollar for the terabyte and don't look back on managing game sizes and disc space ever again.
I picked up a near mint Super Slim with a Six Axis controller, 500Gb HDD and a cradle, all for around $100 USD in total from Amazon Marketplace sellers. Best results of an afternoon of online shopping ever.
@@Easelgames Sure, I guess, but as he explained in the video, SSDs don't bring many advantages to the PS3 because of its infrastructure, and I would always prioritize storage over speed any day, especially when it can and should be used a lot as a media device. Eventhough their prices have been going up in the last 2-3 years: The DECHA00A is my choice for a backwards compatible model in europe. It is region free debug (testing) kit that has the EE+GS. With rebug you can also safely play online with it. Wireless controller, virtual memory cards, HDMI out just makes PS2/1 gaming more comfortable. Also as it also does just play burned discs it makes it effortless to play some english patched PS1/PS2 games. Only downside (at least to me): No BluRay movie and SACD playback support.

For those in Europe interested, you don't really need the DECHA00A it's way more expensive than CECHA01/00. You can get the 00 or 01, install CFW and change the region to make PAL PS1 and PS2 games work. It's like owning the DECHA00A unofficially.

The cheaper one looked beat up with cracks and was completely scratched. I put in a shell from a normal PS3 and that is also the one I am currently using. Only downside on theat thing seems to be that the PS2 chip is somehow damaged and/or its connection to the PS3 output as there is one line that is slightly shifted, so I doubt that one will last forever. :D

Right now is the best time to collect for the PS3! I've seen prices normalize somewhat on titles that were selling close to or above $100 (Folklore, 3D Dot Heroes). Recently picked up 9 titles complete in all like new condition or brand new under $20 each. Edit: It won't let me reply with a comment so here it is. I get all my used games from EBay. I like all my used copies to be clean free of any markings/stickers hence why I choose Ebay over anybody else, including local. I just tend to search in like new condition always, and I guess get lucky in whatever I'm seaching for to be in mint condition at a decent price. There some wholesalers on Ebay that sell decent legit brand new sealed PS3 North American region games at a reasonable price. Just do some digging and you'll eventually find them.
I can vouch for a slight improvement with SSD. My ps3 was basically unplayable, it was crashing, the xmb menu screen was agravating, basically unusable. I slapped a crucial 400gb SSD and it gave it new life. It did improve install times and loading times are a bit quicker.
That was probably your HDD dying on you, and replacing it would probably fix it, HDD or SSD. Keep in mind that the PS3 doesn't support TRIM, so the SSDs life would be shorter than if it was in a PC.
For PS2 playback: I believe all models can now be hacked, and thereafter rip the PS2 discs to play them through software. Beware though, hacking a PS3 is much more of a hassle to do and maintain than any other PS console, even the Vita. It's not like the PSP which was hack-n-go.
@@ericmeiring2512 People say it's so easy but in comparison it really isn't. PSP: Pop this in this folder, start the program on the home screen, press X and you're done. Insert games in this folder and that's it. Same goes for Vita but it has a more complicated root file system with several drives you have to maintain and plugins which must be configured. For the PS3, it's depending on a web browser hack which is seriously unstable and works once every ten tries, and once it's done you need to configure the whole operating system from three different highly advanced programs and debug settings lists over half of which is just lingo nobody understands unless you Google for five days straight (my hacking project took a week and a half to completely set up). Downloading games requires license key files which are hard to come by and very buggy to crack. I would say only one in three games I download actually work as intended. Going online on PSN is risky for banning and you can theoretically circumvent it but it requires even more research and that you constantly clear your OS cache from traces of the console being hacked. Overall I don't find it such a pleasant experience at all and I still haven't managed to go online with it. I did it mostly to be able to rip backup my own actual games on disc and to get a few functionalities in like a SNES emulator and a slightly more intelligent media player. If you're not tech savvy, I can't really recommend it. PSP, Vita and Wii hacking was so much easier than this.
@@DriveYourSanity Oh really? You mean all of a sudden every single rap and rep file is readily available on the web for every single game and the reActPSN is suddenly for some reason working flawlessly after ten years of being a buggy lackluster of an app with not even as much as a button GUI to show for it? Gimme a break. Installing a Hen might be easier through better installers than in my day, but maintaining all settings for all different types of CEX and other modes is no child play. The fact remains that it is a pain in the ass to import games in comparison to the breeze that the PSP was. Pop an ISO into the right folder and off you went. I just checked the video from Blaine Locklair confirming every single thing I said for seven minuets straight and if you check up Mister Mario that's another 35 minutes of agony. And they haven't even begun talking about having a system, just hacking it.
@@Henkibojj bro, I’ve literally hacked all my ps3’s in about 10 minutes. The PS3 is legit one of the easiest consoles to hack. You don’t even need liscense keys to run games anymore, all you do is create a folder called “GAMES” and drag your games into that. Then, to bypass needing a liscense key all you have to do is activate the account you are using to mod the system. That’s literally all it takes.
@@Softtako1738 That's interesting, things must have changed. Sounds hopeful. Aren't there any risks of banning when you register your device? You used to have to clean the cache and everything. Do you have a link on GBAtemp or similar to this release? Thanks.
Thank you for this video, Mystic. Unfortunately I'll need to wait until after August to use it. When the end of the month comes the Nintendo eShop on Wii U/3DS will no longer accept eshop cards, so I have to focus on only purchasing for those consoles until that happens.
@@mydogeatspuke I never considered hacking my Wii U before, but I'm more inclined to do so ever since game codes were removed from Amazon yesterday. To my knowledge they may have been gone before then.
I once bought a "for parts/not working" controller on ebay (back when the PS3 was still the current gen) because I wanted the plastic housing. Turns out, I plugged in the USB cable and it worked great. Still using it today nearly a decade later. So I'm really curious, did the seller not realize these are rechargeable and toss his controllers every time the battery died?!
I think your videos are great! In my opinion they are well organized, short, entertaining and informative! They are full of fun facts and just a joy to watch in this day and age. I wanted to say thank you for your hard work it is appreciated. Would you please do a video on the PS3 3D capabilities and best 3D game choices in your opinion of course, lol. I think your viewers would get some great info and it’s a great opportunity for the PS3 to shine once again.
It's a nightmare shopping for those things. Even when it says OEM in the description you still gotta pay attention to the little details to distinguish the fake ones. Just got one yesterday in immaculate condition off eBay for $40. First thing I did when I received it was I tested it on MGS HD collection and Heavenly Sword. Both pressure sensitive buttons and motion controls were present. I went off by the serial number to check for authenticity.
may u stay blessed with the best of both worlds. Brother, your content is super useful and so far super authentic for all my uses. Regards, Passions and Prayers for you
So for anyone looking at this comment, you cannot use sixaxis movement for your PS3 with a DS4. Also I’m having a bloody nightmare reconnecting my DS4 to my PS4
The super slim is honesty the best model. I’ve had multiple slim units that stop reading blu rays. Swapping out the laser is a complicated task I wouldn’t expect most people be able to do. But never had an issue with my super slim. It’s the smallest, runs the coolest, and quietest, uses the least power. Love mine.
I had to get a new controller last year after I threw broke my other one. It came in one of those blue boxes so I guess it’s fake then lol. I thought it felt kinda weird and lighter than normal to be honest
I got a CHE1 PS3, PS2 Slim and a PS5. The ultimate Backwards Compatibility setup. I only spent $50 on that PS3. Got it from a guy who put it up years ago shortly after buying it. Came with a Dual Shock and a Six Axis too
Thank you for this video, it helped me immensely in buying a PlayStation 3. I hope the PlayStation 3 mass never dies. In my country, namely Turkey, PlayStation 3 is both widely bought and sold. I wish PlayStation 3's processor architecture was as easy as PlayStation 2's, the game library would be even richer.
Well PS2s architecture was kind of complex, not like cell but if you dig deeper then you will find out it utilized something similar to what was later implemented in PS3
A note for people who's not considering the PS1 and PS2 compatibility: if you're thinking of buying a PS1 and PS2 later, you need to make sure your TV supports them because those two were so old they don't support modern TV resolutions. Even if they do, it'll look wonky with black bars and other stuffs. Playing it on PS3 will be a much better and easier experience especially if you're planning to put it in your collection of consoles which connects to just one big TV in your play room. Also I completely agree with the mindset of exclusive only games. Just bought a PS3 few months ago JUST to play GT6 because I missed it. But when I fill it with games I only look for PS3-exclusive games. Other games you most likely can play in PC, unless yours is not capable, it's not worth it. This would apply to other consoles as well, it was the case when I bought the PS2 too, GT4 and Ace Combat was the two I was aiming for. Now I'm looking at the XBox 360 due to it having Ace Combat 6 exclusive in it for some reason.
You can get really good image quality out of a PS1 and PS2 using a dedicated upscaler like the OSSC or Retrotink 2x/5x. Imho the launch PS3 is a really impressive piece of hardware, but I think it's not worth it due to reliability issues. A non-backward compatible PS3, like the later Fats (CECHJ to CECHQ with 65nm RSX) or Slims/Super Slims, and a fat PS2 or 1st gen slim PS2s (up to SCPH-75xxx) will get you full original hardware compatibility with PS3 (through the PS3), PS2 and PS1 games (through the PS2). Plus if you are into original hardware you can use the upscaler with a lot of other systems.
Imo the big factor in deciding which PS3 to get is also wherever you consider jailbreaking it now, or in the future, because Slim/Super Slim models CECH-30xx and later (generally speaking, because there are some CECH-25xx models that support installing CFW, while others don't), have minimal firmware version newer than 3.55 thus limiting your choice of modding the console to only HEN.
I bought a super slim about 8-9 years ago, slapped a 1Tb laptop hard drive in it, and now have 350+ games downloaded on the console. Still runs absolutely perfect. PS3 was a great system.
Per.ission to ask. Did you get all the game from Playstation Store or there's other place to download for free? And does ps3 accept retro game emulator?
@@mondrose4501 all the games came from ps store. I know ps3 can be modded/jailbroken to be able to use emulators and download games from other sources, but other than the hard drive, mine was bone stock. Pretty sure I've seen vids on youtube and articles on places like how to sites to jailbreak and mod.
@@TheSnatchbuckler Hello, do you know if he said whether any PS3 model has better graphics for PS2 games? My English isn't that good and I didn't understand anything after at least 1.30.
@@turko4ever7252 I don't know whether he said anything about better graphics with one model over another, but I had 2 different PS3's-one slim and one super slim. I didn't notice any difference. Since you asked about ps2 games, though, I believe only one model was backwards compatible-the original "fat" ps3, although others can be modded. If I remember correctly, all ps3 models are backwards compatible with ps1 games.
I loved my PS3 Slim. However, I only got to enjoy it for such little time as a power surge fried it. I loved it for being the retro gamer I'am. Loved having the old Twisted Metal and Crash Bandicoot games.
I literally bought the ps3 tv remote with the channel/volume up/down buttons. And a great thing about ALL PS3's is that you can mod them to be able to play ALL PS2 games. Also EVERY SINGLE PLAYSTATION before the Ps4 could play Ps1 games. Ps4 is the only one that isn't backwards compatible AT ALL except through Ps Plus
Couple tips as somebody with a ton of sealed controllers: 1) Sony NEVER included a USB cable with any controller, whether that’s PS3 or PS4. Watch out for those, which seem to be in the blue cardboard packaging. 2) Look at the details. Fonts, typos, weird spaces, and things that look out of the ordinary are signs of fakes. 3) Check the UPC. There are a ton of fake DS3s in the plastic packaging but they have the wrong UPC. Next to a real one they are way off, but without knowing what one looks like, they’re damn close.

The backwards compatible PS3s are also unreliable and not worth the risk. They are all going to die.
I don’t know, the 2nd to last PS3 fat BC model I picked up was £17… just needed a new hdd. And the last one I picked up was just shy of £30.
How much did you pay for the crt tv to play the PS2 games?
I loved the launch PS3 as far as design. It really felt and looked like the most expensive piece of hardware under the TV....which it was, but it at least looked it.
The fact that it wasn’t a common murder weapon is surprising, It was a beast.

If the PS3 got modded with CFW, does that mean I can’t play online?
Enjoy it.

@@donut_jam some dude on eBay.

Definitely agree, the XMB is a lot snappier on an SSD. And I've seen games get up to a 10 second improvement in loading times over a hard drive.
Definitely a video to save.
Thank you
I still love my PS3
I just bought for $120 on Craigslist the MGS4 bundle with 28 games and 2 controllers. It comes complete with its box that one with snake and the ps3 on the front and it looks sick. I was so lucky.
I love this channel, PS3 is an underrated console and advanced for its time So glad my favorite gaming console getting the much needed love
how is ps3 underrated
@@familyguyballschiefin it's games and console value are very low which makes it underrated. Anyone can purchase a ps3 and it's best games easily

What a coincidence! I too got a PS3 Slim 320 GB for 80€.

They are awesome .Right now Im watching your GoW playthrought and its amazing to see you play it and talk so effortlessly(like you talk to a friend).Thank you for your incredible videos!
Still play games online on my ps3 to this day, great community.

The build quality is extremely solid and it's modular, meaning you can switch where the analog sticks are and even make it a left handed controller by swaping the face buttons. It also has 2 back buttons programmable only from a PC with analog programmable throw.

i instinctively scrolled down twice to like this video after liking it the first time
One thing I think you missed: The Superslim came with or without a hard drive.
Yeah but you can just use an SSD instead and then like tape it in there. SSDs don't have movement nor fall damage so it's much less risky.
@@Easelgames Sure, I guess, but as he explained in the video, SSDs don't bring many advantages to the PS3 because of its infrastructure, and I would always prioritize storage over speed any day, especially when it can and should be used a lot as a media device. Yup Sony soon realised the load/seek times on blu rays were pretty slow and allowed a lot of games to be installed.
@@hazy33 That's something you can see on the install sizes: many early games were down on kilobyte levels whereas GTA IV for instance was about 4 GB which is also not much. The DECHA00A is my choice for a backwards compatible model in europe.

For PS2 playback: I believe all models can now be hacked, and thereafter rip the PS2 discs to play them through software. Beware though, hacking a PS3 is much more of a hassle to do and maintain than any other PS console, even the Vita. It's not like the PSP which was hack-n-go.
Can you elaborate the more of a hassle part tho was planing on hacking one, Haven't tried yet.

PS3 Slim, it can play the majority of PS2 games if it's modded with surprisingly good results
Thanks for using parts of my repair video's :-) If you would like to know anything, just ask me.

Couple tips as somebody with a ton of sealed controllers:
1) Sony NEVER included a USB cable with any controller, whether that’s PS3 or PS4.
