    Very detailed video imma be doing the same thing. I have a friend that had a fat model ps3 backwards compatible disc drive issue and luckily I had one given to me that had the yellow light of death so I thought to just use it as a donor console

      This is what I'm doing. I got an original CECHA01 PS3 for $40 the other day w/ a bad bluray drive, and the CECHE01 I bought in 2008 got a YLOD in 2014.

      I used the drive from a 40gb model. Any drive from a phat model will work. Just have to switch over the board from your original drive.

      Going to be hard to find anything outside of just buying a used drive off ebay or something. The good thing is that any one off the OG Fat model will work. Just make sure you put your original daughter board on the replacement. Or else it won’t work

    Thanks for the straightforward guide. My E01 decided to stop reading PS2 games and most DVDs, so I figure the drive must be going bad. Going to take the drive out of a broken A01 I have to fix that. Gotta finish my playthrough of Silent Hill 4. Cheers!

    I have the same console that you share on your video. Where can I find the blueray drive that will fits in the same console that you're sharing on here?

      So you can use the blu-ray drive out of any fat ps3 as a swap. I actually used one out of a 40gb model as a direct swap for the 60gb model. The drives have nothing to do with the backwards compatibility. That is all done on the motherboard. I’d suggest eBay to find one. But you have to make sure that you use the board from the broken drive that came with the ps3 on the new drive. If you do not swap the board, the ps3 will not recognize the new drive. They are paired with the motherboards.

    Do you have a link to a website or somewhere you can get a new disk drive exactly the same as the broken one but working and replace it yourself?

    • @HMTgav09
      @HMTgav09 8 місяців тому

      My disk drive also has a different metal cord and no green on the back with chips etc..

    • @AlmostInFullColor
      @AlmostInFullColor  8 місяців тому

      If your disk drive does not have the chip with it then sadly it is not fixable. That chip or “daughter board” is paired with the main board when the console is manufactured. Thats why it has to be swapped over to the new disk drive you are installing. There is no way to buy a replacement daughter board and pair it with the console. So if you don’t have the original daughter board or if it dies, then there is nothing you can do.

    • @HMTgav09
      @HMTgav09 8 місяців тому

      @@AlmostInFullColor well originally it never came with the chip or daughter board

    • @AlmostInFullColor
      @AlmostInFullColor  8 місяців тому

      The chip and daughter board are the same, just different names. Did you buy it used? All PS3 disk drives have the daughter board on the drive in order to play blu ray disks.

      Did you transfer over the original board to the new disc drive? If you’re new drive came with a board, its a chance you put the wrong board on the new drive when you switched it

    Hey, I just bought a replacement laser for mine, but the blue plastic tab came off the short pin ribbon during it's shipping delivery. Does that mean I need to get another?

    • @AlmostInFullColor
      @AlmostInFullColor  7 місяців тому +1

      You mean the ribbon the connects the drive to the main board? If so, technically no. You can try to slide the blue plastic piece back in with the ribbon into the slot and lock it but it’s gonna be a headache to get it to sit right. Without the blue plastic piece it will not make a connection when it’s plugged into the slot because it isn’t thick enough to make contact anymore.

    I thought they didn't start forcing you to install video games to your console to play them till PS4.

    • @AlmostInFullColor
      @AlmostInFullColor  Місяць тому

      A lot of games forced installs to the hard drive on PS3. Maybe not the entire game but it installed parts of it. MGS 4 was forever to install lol. PS4 was similar because honestly the hard drive read speed was basically the same as the blu-ray drive. PS5 was mandatory because the read speed of the ssd is way faster than the drive. Honestly reading data from a drive during gameplay is basically stone age tech now lol.

    What about the 2 little wires on the side??? I took my out and accidentally pulled them off. Do they get soldered?? Please help

    • @AlmostInFullColor
      @AlmostInFullColor  8 місяців тому

      So they are supposed to come out from the board with a little plug. So i am assuming you mean you pulled them out from inside the drive? Those should go to the motor that controls pulling the disc in and pushing it back out. So if you pulled them from there, then yes, you will need to solder them back on

      Thats the wire that goes to the motor for the disc drive. You will probably need to replace the whole motor now. Pretty sure it’s soldered right to the motor. If you aren’t good with a solder, or have one, then replacing the motor is the easier route.

    Ok, now I have two other problems: 1. The white piece activates as soon I try inserting any disc, and 2. The magnetic piece doesn't attach from the top of the black plastic drive top.
    What the living fuck am I doing wrong...

    • @AlmostInFullColor
      @AlmostInFullColor  6 місяців тому

      Is the white piece you are talking about the little white piece that “blocks” it from taking any discs in? If so, you have to reset the disc tray back to “accept” stage. The magnetic piece should just sit in the top. Once you get it reset right it should work. It’s hard to describe in text. But there are videos that shows how to reset it on UA-cam. Unfortunately, i do not have one on hand right now to do a video on it.

    • @theunholinesswithin70

      @@AlmostInFullColor No, inserting the disc triggers it, in my case.

    • @AlmostInFullColor

      It sounds like it isn't reset right. You will have to look up videos on reseting the disc drive arms and mechanism to fix it.
