    Chris was 382-22 on clay in her career, including a 125 match winning streak spanning 6 years . That's amazing. Andrea handed her 2 of the 22 losses. That doesn't suck folks. Evert was near impossible to beat on clay. She had a 95% win rate. No one comes even close on any surface. Andrea really should have won the french.

      Probably, but ended up helping Martina to her 1st Career Grand Slam taking '83 USO over Evert! ;-)

      Chris was the greatest on clay, no doubt. Navratilova's dominance on carpet was similar with 8 YECs and a 93% winning percentage.

    Thanks. When she felt like it, Jaeger could be a dogged competitor. And though she never won a major, she was, briefly, No. 2 in the world. Cheers.

    By the end of 1982 Chris had won two slam events.winning the Australian for the first time completing her legacy of winning all four slam events at least once. She will never lose to jeager again after this match. And beat Austin 6-0,6-0 never to play her again as Austin retired in spring of 1983. From 1983 on till graf started to dominate in 1988 it was the Chris / Martina show.

      Wow, for some reason I didn't realize I had to thank Jaeger for upsetting Evert in the SF! We didn't have a Tennis Channel back then, so the match was never telecast here in the States! We were lucky to get the final! It's matches like this with the newbies "moonballing" almost killed women's tennis! Had all these little girls just keeping the ball in play like Andrea, Tracy Austin, & Carling Basset! Pam Shriver the only one who attacked the net outside of Martina, Hana Mandlikova, & Sylvia Hanika OTTH! ;-)

    Chris had switched rackets from her usual model to this modification model that was lighter in the head portion which was supposed to help her increase her racket head speed . Instead ; she used her regular stroke timing and as you can see the balls are landing way short - she can’t hit a deep penetrating ball or serve , after this match she added lead tape to the sides ( at the 3 and 9 position ). This helped her hit a much heavier ball but it slowed up her stroke which hurt her against Martina , she couldn’t swing fast enough when Martina hit wide shots : it wasn’t until the Australian open till she learned how much lead tape to use . She should’ve changed to graphite here and if she had she would’ve caught up to Martina sooner

      I've always wondered if Chris regretted waiting until 1984 to finally switch to graphite. I know she had mentioned that the graphite racquets she was testing was causing her to lose a lot of her normal control and accuracy so that may have played a big part. I just think if she had tried to switch a year earlier, her losing streak to Martina may not have lasted as long as it did through 1983 and 1984.

      Interesting about the racquet change. I noticed that in 1982 and even more so in 83 her groundstrokes were not as heavy and she played way too short. That racquet model became a liability to her game. It was so blatant in the 1983 USO final. She should have switched to graphite instead.

      @@leolight5369 AGREED! watching the 83 us open against martina it was BEYOND obvious and like 2 different sports were being played on 2 different sides of the court...in hindsight it looks ridiculous that one is playing with a wood racket and small head and the other is playing with a graphite racket with a huge square head...

    This is oNE OF HER FLATTEST PERFORMANCES OF HER CAREER - jeager kept the ball in and Chris struggled to even move in this match - in ttpypical evert fashion - and losing that third set to Martina in the Wimbledon final a month later after being up a service break 2-1 she came back to win the open for the sixth and final time and beat Martina on grass in the Australian final and then following year at the French

    Andrea Jaegar gave a recent interview to 'The Independent' in the UK. She made some shocking allegations. She said as a young teen, she had suffered from serious and repeated sexual harassment from a female WTA official and when she complained to the WTA, they made threats against her and her family. She also recalled another incident when she'd been given alcohol at a WTA event while still a young teen, and another WTA official had driven her home and tried to take advantage. Andrea said it was one of the reasons why she retired so young. Absolutely appalling stuff. The WTA has so far said absolutely nothing, and neither have any of the other players who were around in that era.

  • @shihlin1

    I don’t think her recent switch of racquets contributed to this loss. This was the third and last in a string of Evert losses to Jaeger going back to the first loss on indoor carpet a few months earlier. Evert also lost to Jaeger on her beloved clay at the Family Circle Cup two months prior.
    Jaeger had been catching up to Evert for the last two years so it was only a matter of time.
    What's shocking about Evert’s play here is how appallingly bad it is. She’s either hitting out or wide or into the net like on match point. Two days later Jaeger famously "tanked" the final to Martina as she later admitted.

    • @Fiero425
      @Fiero425 2 роки тому +1

      Jaeger's success over Martina and Chris was brief and very early on! They took it back with few difficulties IIRC! That '83 Wimbledon Final was almost over in half an hour! I woke up late and missed the 1st set that took 13 min.! ;-)

    The most great fortune for Evert was all the problems Tracy Austin suffered at his back that forced her to retirement so young.I think Tracy Austin would have been stronger than Evert if She could play tennis in a normal phisycal condition

      Tracy didn’t have the selection of shots, she hit every forehand and backhand the same way. She couldn’t move well up and b@ck. Chris realized this finally 4-0 down in first set 80 Sf. She started moving Austin up and back and stopped feeding Tracy perfectly lnghtbdeep balls in to Tracy’s strike zone where she didn’t have to move except laterally. Onceevert figured this out Austin never scared Evert again. Tracy did beat evert two more times but both times came when Chris was scared about a death 5hreat at Canadian open. Next time was the stupid double elimination where Chris beat he4 7-6 in third set then drew her name after Tracy had lost and Chris had not lost to play again for the Sf. Chris locked up the number one ranking for 81 when she beat Austin 7-6 .

    These are the kinds of matches that Evert would have won with a graphite racket...using a wooden racket against players that could match Evert's power like Jaeger was tough. It was like playing with a disadvantage from the start. I find the graphite racket made Evert 10%-15% better.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka 2 роки тому

      And yet Chris easily beat Andrea at the US Open that year with the same racquet. I think the main reason why Chris lost this match was simply because she was incredibly flat. Not sure a graphite racquet would have changed that much.

  • @nordattack

    Chris was using wood and Jaeger had a modern much more powerful racket. You can see her hard shots are more penetrating than Chris. Also Chris is not hitting the ball hard at all and she is not putting pressure on Jaeger. Chris was a master of running her opponents around the court. There is no evidence in this match of Chris trying to dominate. Sad.

    • @TheVerbalVolley
      @TheVerbalVolley 7 років тому

      ...Because Andrea was dominating play. This happened to Evert every once in a while, and this was one of those days. Andrea had no fear of Chris at that time (she stepped on to the court always believing that she could beat Chrissie), and that enabled her to hit out freely. Shortly after that, Andrea went through many mental problems and was never the same player again.

    • @nordattack
      @nordattack 7 років тому

      Actually a major shoulder injury at the age of 19 ended Jaeger's career prematurely in 1985. Andrea then found God and gave up tennis to devote herself to service. Jaeger used her winnings from tennis to create the Silver Lining Foundation with her close friend and business partner Heidi Bookout in 1990. In 1996, Jaeger received the Samuel S. Beard Award for Greatest Public Service by an Individual 35 Years or Under. Later in life, she said in an interview, that she never wanted to win and would throw matches to prevent herself from being the winner or #1 player in the world. She said the call of God was too strong and was always leading her away from tennis. The shoulder injury she saw as a sign to leave the game and she did and got a degree in theology. However when she played not for herself, but for the USA, in Fed Cup and Wightman Cup, she kicked major butt! So she was a closer when she needed to be.

    perhaps the worst match ever played in any grand slam event? as it turns out this was the last time she would ever lose to jaeger..from the beginning 6 months or so of 1982 evert was having a off year for her....this year was the 1st time she lost to jaeger (early indoor carpet in oakland) and she would lose this match (the 3rd loss to jaeger in 1982)... they would play 10 times in 1982 with evert winning 7 out of 10. like i said this was the last time she would ever lose to jaeger.. not sure, but i think i've read or heard that it was "hinted" (not trying to be crude here!) that evert was experiencing her womanly time of the month and this lead to her poor error scattering listless play?....
