There will never be another Chrissie!!! How she is not recognized as the greatest of all time is something I will never understand. Sports careers are measured by how much you win, and if you look at Chrissie career winning percentage it says it all. Nobody, not Martina, or Serena had a winning percentage that even comes close to Chris. Remember she skipped the Australian open many times, and also the French to support Billie's world team tennis. She probably would of won at least 25 majors had she not done that.
When watching something like this you realise the sheer flawlessness of Chris's stroke production,almost every point is perfect she very rarely misses and that takes incredible mind strength and talent,just one of the reasons I feel she is THE G.O.A.T, to maintain that over 18 years with such precision is incredible.Yes there have been flashier players but Chris was flawless with a wooden racket and graphite,her talents are a sheer joy to watch and something today's game lacks.
You'd never teach someone to hit the ball like that now off the ground (or like Navratilova's forehand, either). Chris's strokes were essentially from the 1960s, with wooden racquets. As time went on and players started to hit with more and more topspin, the shortfalls in Chris's technique started to show. She'd been drilled to hit the ball at waist height, and with a heavy topspin shot, that involved retreating way back, planting her feet and letting the ball drop. That meant that Chris couldn't step in and take the ball early to cut off the topspin and instead was pushed way behind the baseline or dragged way off court. There was one famous point at the US Open when Chris was playing Monica Seles. Monica hit a high topspin shot and Chris moved so far back that she ended up against the stands and the ball bounced over her head.
Actually, I live in Fairhaven, Massachusettes, and I made all of the compilations being sold on the internet.........these bring back so many memories and painstaking hours of putting those videos together!!! However, Chrissie is well worth it...hope all the Evert fans enjoy!!
I'd have loved to have been a tennis player. Watching Chris over the years made me. But just in a small club. She makes it look so effortless. But I know it's not. Well done Chrissy. What a champion.🏆
my personal opinion......GOAT....chris evert has records that may NEVER be broken..........16 years in a row at the US open..semis or better.....also...13 years in a row that she won a grand slam title.....AND.......34 GRAND SLAM FINALS.............NO ONE ELSE EVEN COMES CLOSE.............
Back in the mid to late 70's when Evert was at her ultimate peak, she deliberately missed the Australian Open because it was around Christmas time. Evert was number 1 and Margaret Court won most of those titles because none of the top players travelled to Australia to play there. Nothing against Margaret Court..she is great... but Chris Evert would have won most of those titles and would probably have about 25 or 26 Grand Slam titles. Also, back then, no one cared about records or who won the most Grand Slam titles.
The full and correct answer is: Chrissie and Martina were more or less on par with Martina edging it overall. Martina won the h2h - but had the benefit of technology in 3 crucial years. BUT you could say, Chrissie's stubbornness sticking with wood was not Martina's fault. Chrissie had better percentages and only 4 times failed to make the semi's of grand slams in her entire career (Martina failed 18 times over a similar 19-year period of career). Martina was better against Chrissie - Chrissie was better against the rest. And then, of course, doubles - Martina was the greatest woman doubles player of all time (but, let's face it, doubles never really counted for much and Chrissie didn't really bother with it).

A master class, from the greatest counterpuncher to ever play the game...male or female, in my opinion. And the thing that seperates her from the baseline-types like (off the top of my head) a Seles or Sabatini or Sanchez-Vicario or even Borg or Vilas, is the blatant simplicity of her groundstrokes. And that simple shot prodcution, actually made it more difficult for her opponents, believe it or not...especially on her backhand side. When your strokes are whippy and long and wristy, with these weird grips, you have to get all of that in motion before the ball crosses the net..and thats not easy, trying to replicate a passing shot over and over again,with all kinds of "stuff" going on with your racquet preparation. So, she wrote the book on how to pull of simple passing shots, repeatedly. And the proof is in this video,
For Evert it was all about the fundamentals of impeccable footwork and early racket preparation. She made it a priority to get to the ball early, on balance and prepared to hit it early. She had plenty of time to disguise her pass, plenty of time to adjust at the last minute for a gust of wind or awkward bounce. When you get a little sloppy, thats when you deny yourself three good options for passing and the time to disguise your choice. Nobody had a clue what Chris was going to do after she did it.

Just call Evert's two handed crosscourt pass 'ol reliable'. no matter how Evert is playing or who she is playing, or where she is playing or whether she played in 1971, 1982, 1985, o4 1989, that passing shot went exactly where she aimed it. It was probably the best single passing stroke for 15 years.
Stephan I agree with you. Today's women are boring compared to Evert, Martina etc. they are all sluggers and no finesse! Evert, Graf and Martina are the all time greatest IMO!

You also don't see any Austin, Jaeger , Court or Wade because these videos concentrate on the tennis of 1985-1989. Someone needs to make an Evert 3 of the tennis prior to 1983, a prequel if you will.
No VCR's in the 70's and early 80's. I think that's why we don't see as much Goolagong, as well as Long, Court and Wade. I think these matches were recorded on VCR"s. I think I bought my first VCR in 1984-85. But I too would love to see more Goolagong.
So interesting to see Chris and Martina play so well in 1985. Within just a couple of years, both of them seemed to have lost so much physically and mentally, due to injuries and burnout. Their 87 and 88 Wimbledon semi finals were a lot worse tennis than their 1985 final.
Great compilation video beginning with THE rivalry Martina and Chrissie. The power they both showed at Wimbledon is fairly close to what the woman have today. I am the biggest Evert fan but you know is missing from the game today ? Serve and volley !!!! You may have some girls who serve then hit a big groundie then go to the net but there is no one today like Martina. What is missing in all the rivalries today is that they all play pretty much the same. Navratilova and Evert were really the halcyon days of tennis and without someone like a Martina,Goolagong or Bueno I cannot see anything coming to close this classic time. God, I was lucky to see most of these matches and even saw Chris win The Australian Open in 1984 in the stands.

I agree. US Open 84 Final was of the most devastating loss for Chris, so close to break Martina's 13 victories streak. So Evert comes to 85 RD with a even heavier burden. And the match was full of drama. In the 3rd Chris serving at 5-5 all was 0-40: if Martina had won that point, would have served for the championship the next game
Fred Gonzales true... but the 86 final was more of a decisive beatdown than 85....the fact that the 85 final ended on a perfect passing shot puts that one over this one.... however....I enjoyed BOTH cuz Chrissy beat that ass!!!
In the '86 French Open highlights that this collection begins with, you will sometimes see a tour player at that time in the crowd, Andrea Temesvari (from Hungary, who I believe was once in the Top 10 or Top 20). She is blonde with bangs and her hair tied back, looks like she has a white towel on her shoulders, and is sitting in the crowd just below Evert's husband at that time, John Lloyd (sunglasses and white jacket), at for example 3:23, and she remains basically stoic whenever the camera is on her, regardless of what happens in the match, as if not really happy for Evert. Maybe they were friends, who knows? But it sure didn't seem like it in this match. Jealousy?

10 Slams on clay. 5 Slams in grass. 3 on hard court. 5 year-end championships on various surfaces. Her precise, aggressively probing and DEEP game could excel on any surface. She should have had the foresight to play for history and ditched the Billie Jean King folly of World Team Tennis. She would have overtaken Margaret Court in singles majors.

I think the '86 FO Final was better tennis with less unforced errors, and the '85 FO Final was better drama but with more unforced errors.
