Andrea Jaegar gave a recent interview to 'The Independent' in the UK. She made some shocking allegations. She said as a young teen, she had suffered from serious and repeated sexual harassment from a female WTA official and when she complained to the WTA, they made threats against her and her family. She also recalled another incident when she'd been given alcohol at a WTA event while still a young teen, and another WTA official had driven her home and tried to take advantage. Andrea said it was one of the reasons why she retired so young. Absolutely appalling stuff. The WTA has so far said absolutely nothing, and neither have any of the other players who were around in that era.

Andrea was quite charismatic. Handled herself well for a teenager.

Tell me more! I used to teach with her father at Saddlebrook, and I knew him well. Fantastic coach and great friend.

A commenter said he was a typical "tennis dad" type of person. Domineering and controlling.

This is the first time I have seen this footage. On court, Andrea Jaeger always looked moody, angry and unapproachable. This interview really surprised me. I have never seen Jaeger smile much less show her teeth when she smiles.

Andrea started to tear up the bars at this point. Her father overworked because he feared that she was going to be an alcoholic. But Roland Jaeger didn't teach her to serve and locate with power because top players started to attack the slop. Which was really why Andrea got rebellious her father. He kicked her out of the house before the 83 Wimbledon final against Martina and ended up spending the night at Martina's house!

Tear up the bars? I've read a lot of stories about Jaeger over the years but I never heard that she was a serious drinker/partier.

Yikes, no wonder she lost so badly to Martina the next day. She was already traumatized as a result of her father's actions, and she likely did not have the heart to play against the person who took her in. Speaking of that, I always wondered why Andrea could never seem to beat Wendy Turnbull. I read that the first time she beat Wendy, the latter started to cry about losing her talent so badly that she was now getting beaten by kids. Andrea was so upset that she subconsciously resolved never to beat Wendy again. The thought of her taking a dive like that, if true, speaks oddly of her personality. Even more interesting was that 1983 Wimbledon tournament you speak of. Andrea thrashed Billie Jean King in the semifinals (in what would be Billie Jean's last Wimbledon), and I read that Andrea got angry at Billie Jean after the latter boasted about how she had an easy time beating Wendy in an earlier round. Andrea was essentially avenging the defeat of Wendy.

Too bad that Tracy Austin and Andrea Jaeger didn't have the kind of long successful careers they potentially could have had. The record books would have looked alot different. I remember Andrea Jaeger telling a story about a dispute she was having with her father right before a match with Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon. This dispute impacted Jaeger heavily. A few weeks earlier Jaeger had played Navratilova and beaten her at a Wimbledon warm up tournament. When they met at Wimbledon Martina won but something seemed to be off. Some time later a reporter had said to Jaeger that it didn't look as if she was trying her hardest to win that match. Jaeger's reply was, "I wasn't."
Andrea Jaeger went through alot to get to the top of the tennis world. It would have been nice to see her fully realize her potential.

I think Andrea's father wanted her to be a champion. I'm not so sure how much Andrea herself wanted to be a champion. She's a nun now.
