    I started playing tennis after Evert retired and only recently, thanks to fans uploading vids here on UA-cam, have had the pleasure of watching her in action. I LOVE everything about her game! She truly was the ultimate "professional" in every aspect of the game. The proud, yet gracious, manner in which she comports herself is both admirable and endearing.

    Just noticed that Martina's parents were in the front row and applauding for chrissie... by this time 1988 chris and martina were truly great friends...

    I remember Reggi for her incredibly awkward serve and ground strokes. Yet she was among the top pros in the women's game for a long time.

    I remember being really shocked that Reggi had beat Chris at the Olympics. I couldn't imagine how she could have,she didn't do anything better than Chris, nothing. After watching this match.. I now understand. She is playing with the Wilson Profile (2.7), the most powerful raquet they have ever made. I got one in 1989, and it was very stiff and unflexable, but extremely powerful. I had to really shorten my back swing and get behind the ball. I improved my game immensely, as far as added power.

      That ilympiatch played with non pressurized tennis balls in a very high altitude that evert arrived too late to acclimate - she couldn’t keep the ball in the court the balls were flying out, she had no control that day. She played that year only because her husband or soon to be husband was an Olympic skier and wanted to participate although the Olympics were new for tennis . She was a pro and had mixed feelings participating in the Olympics ( supposed to be for amateur athletes ) . I watched that match and figured something had to be up because Chris literrslycouldnt keep the ball from flying off her racket when she took a regular swing and when she tried to keep the ball in hit the ball in the net . Her whole timing was off . If she had arrived earlier she could’ve gotten used to the very different conditions . Reggi didn’t seem to miss a ball but was not hitting winners . Reggi collected unforced errors

    @karrtt1234 I had read somewhere that Chris had something like 62 unforced errors in her match with Reggi in the Olympics. This will cause almost anyone to lose! I do remember those Profile raquets, they were like a baseball bat... so wide! Reggi did have her days though, I was at Hilton Head in April of this year when she took Martina to 3 sets at the Family Circle.

    I don't know why, but your comment made me bust out laughing, especially when neither of them bothered to try and reach up to shake the umpire's hand.

    (cont) So when I saw the raquet in Reggi ... I understood immediately, you can even see that it seems that Reggi is really hitting powerful shots, and Chris is having some diffculty with the pace.

    talk about revenge, this match was literally less then 10 days after reggi upset evert at the olympics, in one of her (evert's) worst matches of her career, one of those matches in the last few years of her career that was signaling her time to retire soon since she could still beat anyone but also have those rare unexplainable losses where nothing could be done about it.... surprised evert played ANY indoor tournaments by this time in 1988 when it was her least favorite surface and martina's favorite and by this time the year before her retirement year evert had the right and had enough of playing anywhere she didn't want to..

      The exact dates of the two matches were 26th September (Seoul) and 15th October (Filderstadt) 1988.

    @thequinnster72 Again exactly my point.. the sheer power generated by the raquet would force the error , as you can see here in the first set... so not surprising to me, Unfortunately for Reggi she just didn't have goo stroke production.. otherwise with that raquet .. she could have spelled big trouble ! Chris actually played with it after her retirement for awhile, but I suspect it would have been too beefy... it was a heavy raquet and my swing had to be shortened.

    is it me or does reggi remind anyone else of tracy austin's serve motion and still flat groundstrokes? perhaps the closest we'll ever get to seeing a older austin in 1988 with a heavy powerful graphite racket against evert?....

    • @senorgato70
      @senorgato70 8 років тому

      +thomas schmitz Nothing about Reggi's game, except being a flat baseliner is reminiscent of Tracy's. Maybe the forehand has a very similar backswing, but that's it.

  • @cypher31

    I'm a bit surprised to see Reggi using that "club." It was clear she was having some difficulty controlling some of her ground strokes with that stick as it requires lots of control and a very compact backswing. Even with all that added power Chris still handled Reggi quite easily. You could see there was a little venom in Chrissie's look in that second set set and she was really trying to hand out that bagel, but had to settle for a breadstick. At 4-0 in the second it seemed like Reggi was clearly just trying to get off the court.

    • @lenwelch2195
      @lenwelch2195 Рік тому

      Chris doesn’t respect players who figure they are going to lose so they want off the court so she attempted to take every point to show Reggi that once you step on the court you play your best or try your hardest because people paid money to watch you play and it’s part of being a professional .

      @@martinray4475 i dislike playing those who use those wide beam rackets - blasting every shot the ball is either in by an inch or two or out ... anyway glad Chris walked away with a win here to show that finesse counts.

    Raffaella certainly hits a very powerful ball, but she doesn't have much margin for error. That would make Chris Evert a difficult assignment I think - just too many balls back.

    was this match before or after the 88 olympic match? knowing chris it was probably AFTER that bad, bad loss...everyone knows that the great majority of the time, when chris would lose or have trouble with a lesser player, she subsequently never lost or had trouble with them ever again!
