oh my.... how magnificent Seles was. She was a true killer.
Monica Seles holds the record for most Grand Slam singles titles won as a teenager in the Open Era.
seles could have gotten the record for the most grand slam single titles won as a teenager in all era, had she not been stabbed, because in 1993 she could have won french and us open, and possibly wimbledon, to surpass maureen connolly record of 9 grand slam single titles won as a teenager.
One of Monica's biggest strength Pre Stabbing was her mental toughness, fearlessness and extreme confidence! On crucial moments of a match. while others gets tight and nervous....Seles goes for it even more.. hits the ball harder and closer to the lines ! Such a tremendous match player! This was all gone when she came back in 1995! She was never the same player after that horrific crime!
Seles hit the ball a LOT harder on her comeback. She just did not have movement. Back in the early 90s she was a great retriever and rarely made errors. Graf and Capriati hit the ball much harder.
@@andrews6341 Everyone can clearly see that Seles was not even half the player she once was before she was viciously attacked by a Steffi Graf fan! For her to make a comeback in 1995 and reached the finals just shows how an amaziing player Seles was!
Seles was as strong as before after her comeback. The difference was, that Steffi was out of her crisis by then.
Also Steffi was hitting even harder , newer racket and was fitter and faster. Graf hit a harder ball in general even before Seles stabbing but her fitness made her incredibly hard to beat on her day@@_friedie
It also highlighted how lacking in depth tennis was by around this stage and pre 1995 . Sanchez was ok and Hingis was only just starting. Gabriela Sabatini and Martinez could have done better given their power but chose not to attack and hit mid court topspins that were wallopped away by big hitters. You could see the game got too powerful for them when they did not have time to hit out on their topspins and started to reverting to slicing because they did not have the time to use that big swing , they should have flattened out their shots more against Graf and Seles and Sanchez @@jjsggg1465
I remember watching this match on Doordarshan with my parents...they were supporting Seles the new sensation whilst I was supporting Graf...the thing I also remember is that day there was satellite problem during the final set of the match and the screen went black, we could only hear the sounds...however when visuals came back it was the game when Seles won...I was sad but what an epic match it was.
oh my god, wow❤❤❤
Before Djokovic mental strength there was Monika Seleš. Both from former Yugislavia. And before he had to beat the opponent AND the crowd Seleš was doing it here already
This was a very interesting match. I really admire both ladies.
Absolutely agree,I am not a graf fan,but she is amazing player.both are brilliant tennis players and it's shame what happened.Tbh Graf can only play whoever is on the orther side of count.she gets bad press, but she is super to watch.I am one of seles biggest fans and she has brought so much joy to my life.❤❤❤
Genius ambidextrous player Seles!
Best match in women's tennis history without a doubt. Seles and Graf took the sport to a higher level than anyone did before or after their time.
Several Graf-Navratilova match had higher quality.
@@carrerau7138 Not from the baseline though.
@@rm1507 Seles took the sport two levels down concerning the net game and general watchability. She established ugly tennis.
@@rm1507 I agree, and don't even bother with that carrerau7138 guy. He absolutely hates Seles because of his fanatical obsession for Graf.
@@carrerau7138Not really. Graf was playing an aging past her prime Navratilova! The Evert-Navratilova matches was more even!
The real and true GOAT..my forever idol Monica Seles..
I liked Monica so much !
The match we’ve been looking for!
If Seles had not been stabbed, she would have been one of the best tennis players in history. Even in that match, we saw how he beat Graf. The injustice suffered by Seles in her career made Graf's career unrivaled.
Seles' best showing at Wimbledon was reaching the final this same year, and Graf rolled her 6-2 6-1. Stabbing or not, Seles was not an accomplished grass court player. And without that feather in your cap, you're not going to rock any history books. Ask Pete Sampras about the French Open.
@@broncoguy4862 She was 18. Plenty of room for her to improve on grass. Sadly her rise was cut short.
it went 3 sets and 10-8 in the third, There as no domination.. Graf would have improved and maybe even use her one hander more if seles wasn't stabbed and kept challenging her. Alot of what ifs
@@broncoguy4862 In the 1992 Wimbledon final, Seles could not play her game. Her opponent in the semi-finals, Martina Navratilova, made a statement that she was disturbed by the sounds of her hitting the ball. If you remember, he hit the ball in the final without screaming. This also affected his game. You can see Seles as she should be in her performances here at the 1992 US Open and the 1993 Australian Open.
@@broncoguy4862 Since Monica Seles is not a player in the Western world, she did not receive enough attention from the tennis media. Following his repeated stabbings, the players on the tour (except Sabatini) were on the front lines. Both Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf did not support him. Seles is an actress who had almost 3 years stolen from her career. The disgrace he experienced in Germany is a turning point in tennis history.
More than a sporting duel, it was a duel to the death. I had never seen Graf talk so much and gesticulate and celebrate the points as if they were the game. and the face when receiving the trophy... what a shame that these duels were cut short by the fateful attack against them. the best women's final in history
Another beautiful day! Thank you, Seles!!!!!
I remember watching this live on TV. The tension in that final set was so high it was almost hard to watch!
Watched this match live greatest grand slam final of all time for me the stabbing of Seles took away about 5 years of dominance she would have win grand slams upto 96 or 97 by then the Williams sisters, Davenport & Hingis came into the scene
I miss Monica so much
One of the best Selesh vs Graff matches of the previous era 😮☝️🙄👏👌☝️
The best match of woman's tennis monica seles vs Steffi graf
Imagine if Seles is not a victim of stab fan..
How old (or young, really) was she when she came back on tour? And for how many more years did she play?
@@christiangonzales3903 correct me if im wrong but took 2-3 years for her to comeback on tour and she never be the same again.

THis is the first tennis match i ever watched! And to this day the best female match of all time! Seles was brilliant! 6 Slams before she was 19!!! Beating Graf 4 times! The GOAT in my book ... she suffered the biggest injustice in the history of the sport I!! Graf wouldnt stand a chance if Seles was allowed to continue .... Grafs lunatic fan, the German guy who tried to kill her by the way didnt even do one day in jail ... Graf took advantage of that attack ... there is no way she would have 22 slams if Seles was not stoped so brutally ...
Monica #GOAT Seles
These two changed the game more than any two players ever, IMO (they would've still been elite in the big babe era 10-15 years later, but nobody from the 70s or even 80s would've been able to compete with them in the 90s). They would've continued producing classic matches at RG, clay was definitely the surface on which they were most evenly matched (neither were at their peak in 92 and they still gave us the greatest final ever).
Also appreciate how this RG final is like the one Graf/Seles matchup where the comment section isn't (usually) just littered with their stans foolishly arguing one was far superior to the other; they both finish with around 18-20 slams in an ideal world (yes, the math checks out) but I guess we'll never know.
Peak Navratilova was far better than peak Seles.
Steffi always said that the only player she was able to lose even in peak form was Martina Navratilova. And that Martina was her best opponent ever.
@@carrerau7138 Their respective rivalries suggest otherwise. Both Graf and Seles are worlds above Martina.
@@thb1091 That is nonsense and you know it.
Navratilova in 1983/84 won 6 slams (incl. 2 Wimbledons; 4 wins against Evert). Martina was 164-3 win/loss.
Steffi in 1988/89 won 7 slams (incl. 2 Wimbledons; 3 wins against Navratilova). Steffi was 159-5 win/loss. Martina still had 2 of her 7 best years in 1988/89.
Seles in 1991/92 won 6 slams (no Wimbledons; 1-1 in finals vs. Steffi). Seles was 144-11 win/loss. Steffi had 2 of her 6 worst years in 1991//92.
At age 34-36 Navratilova beat #1 Seles 4 times.
Even in 1988/89 Navratilova was better than Seles ever was. Ask Steffi Graf.
Super seles.
2:13 a forehand winner down the line from above his head with an open grip, astonishing
Monica Seles: the only lady that had 2 handed backhand and forehand. She truly aged like fine wine. Such a beautiful lady! ❤
Love Seles too. But there was at least one other with 2 hands on both sides... Marion Bartoli
@@HeeJunFansome. japenese players also there.
Hsieh Su Wei also has 2 handed on both sides. She's good to watch like Monica.

The beginning of the modern era
There are two Graf matches that I can't watch to the end: her 1999 Wimbledon loss to Davenport and this one. Regarding the former, I think it has something to do with not wanting to see my favourite player end her career with a loss. I still wish she could have completed the back-to-back slams. With the latter, I just feel like she should have won this match, but the loss speaks to a certain stubbornness in her game, an unwillingness to adapt to the Seles challenge that cost her the match. Still, even though I can't watch it right to the end, both players are a marvel to watch.
Awesome work thanks.
Despite Graf is an amazing champion and tennis legend, she can’t be considered as the Goat. I have great respect for her, but ignoring that the ignoble stabbing, horribly suffered by Seles, helped tremendously Graf in achieving her tennis records, even if unintentionally, it’s like ignoring the existence of the force of gravity on Earth.
the goat is based on numbers and is measurable- 22 slams. Its not based on your opinion of what could have been.
@@user-be5qg7mr1s History will look at it differently! And Serena is the current GOAT and not Graf! Can't the DENY the FACT on how the stabbing of the true#1 player benefitted the #2 player! And to make it worst, the evil act was committed by a fan of Grafs!
Seles was clearly superior to Graf. But Graf fans ( those fanatical ones) hate to admit the truth on how much Graf's career enormously benefitted from the Gunther Parche madness.
losing 5-10 H2H is " clearly superior" and 4-6 before the stabbing. You got anything else beside sounding like pouty 10 year old? @@showtell8905
@@user-be5qg7mr1s 4 to 6 before the stabbing but 3 of those Graf wins were against a 14 -15 year old Rookie Seles! 😂The real story was how Seles quickly turned it around and had a 3-1 winning record against Graf in the MAJORS where it mattered most! 10 slams for Seles vs 2 slams for Graf during the period prior to the stabbing!
Great video and would be so great to see a highlight video of the same year's semi-final match between Sabatini and Seles 🤩
An iconic rivalry... A heartbreaking end ... Seles was on her way to complete domination, if not for that incident she'd easily have surpassed Graf and been the 🐐 of that generation of women's tennis.
You can’t really be considered GOAT without a Wimbledon title...she was able to make it past the quarterfinals only once in her career...
@@franciscolaprida2133 Seles reached the Wimbledon final in '92. She was only 20 when the stabbing occurred, she had 6-7 years to win a Wimbledon, and she had enough time to achieve it.
Monica Seles was actually only 19 when stabbed. Maybe hadn't even reached her peak. In a normal career span and staying motivated, she would have had plenty of time to win a Wimbledon singles title.
True! Monica Seles was the clear #1 at the time of stabbing (defending champion at 3 slams) and that Steffi was a clear #2 (W champ plus runner-up at the Australian and French).
Monica was #1 and had been for 2 years before the stabbing. Whether Steffi or her fans liked it or not, the stabbing made her the top player!
@@showtell8905 Totally agree, one of the most tragic events in sports.
Graf is the greatest female player ever in the Open Era! Her resume & accomplishments are unmatched!
Thanks for uploading. A. Big fan Of Mónica Seles since 1992.i was in Saudi Arabia that time. Now it's May 5th 2024..
TRAGICALLY, the crazy German fan made the correct decision in terms of accomplishing what he wanted to. The monster accomplished all that he could have ever hoped for in the stabbing and more with very little downside risk. He got off legally .. and yet he took the #1 ranking and the tremendous momentum away from Seles.
Yup. And people who say Seles was on the decline already should look at her late 92 early 93 stats. 1 loss in 6 months (in the 3rd set breaker vs GOAT Navratilova) after 34 straight wins that included 2 slams and the YEC
Perfect little Mo ❤

I am in awe of Monica Seles. She plays with violence.
Just wonderful
What an amazing match !

See you 32 years i love you thé girls ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Such a great final
Monica Seles is renowned for her use of a double-handed grip on both her forehand and backhand shots, a technique she employed for the majority of her shots. However, determining her dominant hand solely based on her gameplay can be challenging. Without observing her serve, it's difficult to definitively classify her as either left- or right-handed.

The story of the match.
And why did she have so many unforced errors?
@@Vipa567 Didn‘t have her best day.
Whereas Seles played one of her greatest matches ever.
@@Vipa567 Because Monica was in her head. Hadn't she been stabbed I guess Monica would send her into an early retirement.
@@carrerau7138 So, nothing Monica did made her day worse?
@@TheMixrs That match was Monica‘s only win in her two great years 1991/92 against Steffi who won the other 3 matches quite easily.
So your claim that Monica (!) was in Steffi’s head is asinine. But your are a Selestial and that comes with the territory.
BTW, which #1 player has the worst H2H record against any opponent in the history of the WTA?
Take a guess, boy…. 🤣
Not Steffi's best day with a few too many mistakes, but that and the intensity made it one of the best finals ever. Seles was brilliant that day, but a few weeks later, on a quicker surface, she was absolutely demolished by Graf.
She was the one i was watching Tennis of women, and her finals or games against Graf are always epic until that accident happened.
Monica was fast around the court back then.Graf was the better mover but seles was no slouch.
Now compare this quality to today's matches
Seles ❤
Fantastic how the French crowd supported Steffi!
Seles was really disliked at this time by watchers and other players especially as she came over as quite cold and arrogant also she would win 60 60 and say things like "it was a tough match at times " and laugh in press conferences sarcasticly. Even when she won matches she would give cold handshakes . Graf was like this also too to be fair though. Sabatini was very different she was always very nice either way. Though tbf Seles was very young also the screaming was a bit of a factor.
Her strength was grunting....see the next meeting of that.
THAT YEAR, SHE WAS WITH YUGOSLAV FLAG, DON'T FORGET THAT !!!
Lo mas grande por tu fortaleza
Nobody ever do that 6 consecutive grand slam title its only Monica Seles
I wish Steffi had come over her BH more. No doubt her slice was amazing but when she stepped in & really came over her single handed backhand, it was an AMAZING fkn shot!
Steffi's forehand is not asthetically pleasing either. Effective shots of course but not beautiful.
@marykistnen6837 I thought I was the only one that felt this way about her forehand cause everyone seem to be swooning over it.😂😂 Her style of play will not go past the 1st round today. She has the entire court open when she's hitting the forehand from the backhand side of the court...
Monica was playing for Yugoslavia in 1992, so you shoud put at least Serbian flag, because there is no Yugoslavian. She won 8 grand slams playing for Yugoslavia, just saying.
9:54 Ayrton Senna
I was so happy for Monica Seles. Especially since she beat the woman I most despise. I rather not go into detail about it. 😊👏🎾
Listen, Graf was great but her career and titles were impacted by Seles getting stabbed, as Seles was starting to become dominant!
Even in the absence of seles, graf was destroyed by mary pierce in roland garros quarterfinal, first round wimbledon lose against lori mac neil, the US-Open 1994 were theirs, but sanchez vivario managed to turn the match and win,so imagine her with the continously presence of seles.Grafs short ressurection was owned weak opponents,Mary Joe Fernandez,Helena Sukova,Jana Novotna.
Graff was a great player but Seles was just BETTER and mentally stronger. Graff won about half her slams after the stabbing, when it looked like she was just going to win W from then on..............
We all remember fondly how mentally strong Seles was after that unfortunate stabbing incident.
Steffi would have played again within a few weeks!
Are you saying that your COMPATRIOT GERM stabbed the WRONG PLAYER???
@@showtell8905 Speaking of minor stab wounds (which seem to fascinate losers so much) - Steffi would have played again within a few weeks. She was a tough cookie and never a fragile flower like Seles and, yes, also like Navratilova and Serena (who folded like cheap tents when the Grand Slam was on the line).

@@carrerau7138 Yes, but since Graff couldn't do it on the court, Parshe had to do it with a knife.🤣🤣🤣
Graf can be hard-headed at times. This is one match where she could have varied her match play so much more, making Seles run from end to end, from front to back, with more dropshots just to keep Seles from any rhythm. but she allowed herself to play the Seles game and therefore lost, even though playing that game it was still a very close match....
Why nobody follow two handle forhend of Seles ?
Graf the Great! Probably the most athletically gifted player in women's tennis history, Navratilova & S. Williams 2nd and 3rd respectively!!! Lol
No one other than Graf could have stretched Seles to 8-10 in the third set that day.
No one other than Seles could have survived Graf’s comeback that day.
Amazing how little unforced errors
Monica seles and stefi graf would hv ended their career with nearly 15 titles each.
Realistically yes. I still think both would stop dominating by the late 90s. Seles was robbed of 1993-1996 which would have been her peak years. She had lost only one match in 6 months when she was attacked in hamburg
Monica Seles is GOAT in Tennis History
Monica was mentally unbreakable...even with the audience clearly on Steffi's side. Monica was a natural fighter and Steffi was clueless how to break her.
Yes. In similar conditions both Sanchez and Hingis crumbled under pressure. Seles stood firm.
Graf should have won that match , she made far too many errors. If she cut them down she would have the last two sets easily.
@@andrews6341 errors are drawn. Seles was pressuring her like hell through the whole match and punished every short ball with a winner while bringing a lot of balls back. Graf had to go for a lot of winners and this produced a lot of errors in the process. Actually Seles was leading in the third by a significant margin and could have won 6-3 had she converted any of the match points she got.
I love a great one hand backhand but Seles just ate up Grafs slice
Why they play tiebreak in the third now? Is better without by far, i wish they comeback to this
Agree. It’s such a stupid change, especially for finals. It cost Federer the Wimbledon 2019 title.
I guess they still had to win the set by two games no matter how high the set went back then, right? No tie-breaker.
As remarkable as Seles was, she was also the most significant player to bring in the screaming/shrieking/yelling (whatever term u prefer; but it's not 'grunting' really) era, which taints the tour to this day.

Amazing footwork from Steffi such a unlucky 3 set matched..she brutally revenge came at Wimbledon with only 57 minutes matched. Such a GOAT.

Despite Graf's >60 unforced errors she barely lost the match. Monica is a great player but what was unique about Steffi is her ability to stay competitive/win even when her level isn't on top.
Greatest rivalry. Graf destroyed her on grass. People forget during this time Grafs Dad was in prison which affected her mentally. Seles was so strong mentally. Grunting should be banned in tennis, nobody should be doing it for every point it’s a intimidation tactic.
Seles destroyed Graff everywhere else which was why she was number one and Graff was not. Not much of a rivalry between the 2 during that time as Seles was DOMINATING women's tennis including Graff. Are we supposed to believe that Graff barely clinging on to Wimbledon while the top ranked Seles was winning all the other slams was merely due to a graff slump? What happened to her motivation there? oh i forgot of course "the slump" is covered by other excuses. And of course there seemed to be no problems mentally from 30th April 1993 onwards. it was positively indecent the way *SLUMPING* graff immediately started showing up in slam finals again once the prospect of a drubbing off Seles disappeared!

Yes, but the single backhand of Graf is awesome too
Bartoli used two hands on both wings, as did Peng Shuai before she disappeared.
