One of my favorite ships! Also, it's nice against subs as well with the hydro and forward fireing depht charges. It's kinda nice to have something to counter subs and cv's. It's quite good at contesting caps and even using the hydro offensively (5km range), but I'd say max concealment is an absolute must.
Full concealment on Friesland actually makes her a pretty good cap contender, as there are just countless of potato DDs that would smoke immediately when encountered and just stay in the smoke, offering you a free kill with your 5km hydro plus a free smoke for you. I've done this many, many times in my Friesland and it was such a good experience.
I'm having significantly better results with F. Sherman, but Groningen is not a bad ship. The issue is that many players know it's slow and doesn't have any torps, good light cruiser players will just steamroll it. It's a ship that needs to be played carefully.
Funny that he does Gronigen/Friesland today- I've been playing a ton of both to finish the final destroyer mission (Earn 2500 ribbons) for the Dockyard. These two have been longtime favorites of mine for farming any mission that requires ribbons or main battery hits.
Ehm.. the Dutch line DOES have a commander that buffs the Groningen to insane levels. Michiel de Ruyter boosts your firechance even further. Which is MENTAL :)

These days we have a LOT of radar in all ships, including DD's. Also, we have a lot more hydro and 5km DD hydro making pushing very hard. And on top of that everyone knows you don't have torps and will push you, or at least you cannot stop them. If you have teammates who will spot you can farm, and I have got some crazy numbers doing that, but I feel very little battle impact with it. I either play it like a light cruiser, or die trying to do DD stuff. My win % is super low in the ship, but she will farm credits even in those matches. That all being said I own the Dutch Tromp as well and she really seems to do well in the current meta, to the point where it feels like she punishes enemy players for playing. I can carry games with her and really influence battles again all ship types. 12km airdrops means you can bait radar (or stay outside it) and then ruin island campers with fires and create a 12km no-go zone. The torps hit often enough with long range, and reload quickly. Your guns actually hit damned hard even if your DPS is low. Finally your detection is quite low and really usable even without smoke. I want to love the Groningen but the Trump is just more fun right now.
Ship Request: Admiral Makarov. I remember there is a loot box controversy back in the day that reward Makarov instead of a rare drop. After that I rarely see this ship in the game, can you make a review of it?
From what I have seen it is not. The plane costs a gun and torp launcher. And a DD is conflicted as they use stealth to play close and aircraft are best used when your ship is in a safe location. Potato Quality has a video about the ship, look it up. Hybrid BBs can get away with it as they are usually at range and have armor. Something the Halford and Tone do not. I like the Tone but the Atago is better.
I just got it and I enjoy it. You do lack a bit for raw dpm but the torps are still good and the torps and planes reload fast enough for you to always have something going on. You can be annoying in stealth by intermittedly firing torps and launching planes too. Still not sure whether to cope-build the gun dpm or build for max range. Do NOT build for the torpedos! The game reccomends that you should, do not listen. It takes just 1 good and hard hit to center to knock out ALL of your torpedo dpm permanently. Overall I like it, its fun, but not the best and I think harder for a player to take full advantage of. Almost forgot... the plane spotting is sooooo useful. Like crazy useful. As important as the rockets.

I wonder how the Friesland, Groningen and Ragnar compare? As a DD player I think my first steel ship will be the Ragnar. But I do like DDs that have torps too, like Marceau, the Ragnar seems like it may be boring to play. I was not a fan of the EU DDs when they came out, the IJN torps spoiled me.
I think i messed up and got Paolo Emilio as my first research bureau ship with out the italian unique commander. Honestly with all the radar and hydro nowadays days and cvs idk how anyone makes that ship work that or I just have bad luck with the matchmaker.
I have to disagree with you about Commander Jerzy Swersky... I think his strongest trait is his 25% increase of Adrenalin rush of which doesn't have to be activated. think about what Adrenalin rush enhances... yeah... "everything in terms of firepower". Yes for Friesland his torp reload is muted but increasing Frieslands' rate of fire is Holy Schmit brutal. On that point Groningen is not equal to Friesland if Friesland has Jerzy for a commander.
While true, the Groningen has the dutch seasoned commander with the 50% buff to the fire chance skill (which id argue is better than Jerzy excluding talents)
You say these cool things about Groningen, which I even think is great, but in the current meta with the playerbase, it's a fucking nightmare to play unless you play it as a long range battleship farmer. It's useless in most scenarios, because the average game is a steamroll - if you're on the losing side, you do nothing, if you're on the winning side, you also do nothing.
Groningen is the best tier 9 in the game. Friesland was horrible because of the fact the tech tree ships are torpedo focused and captains from them wouldn't work well on Friesland.
That is a weakness with Friesland. I have a dedicated 21 point gunboat captain for Friesland and Ragnar, so anything is possible if you're TryHard enough. 😅

I would like to see how PQ handles the Daisen now, secondary build, conceal with brisk, just run to a location and be a big battle barge
I like kitakaze more though. Better concealment, devastating 12km torps and absolutely dumpsters almost everything without needing IFHE.
