    Though I can't find it, I remember reading ages ago an interview with one of the leads on the series (probably series creator/director Masahiro Yasuma?) remarking on one of the core design philosophies of the series: It should be difficult, but anyone should be able to beat every boss, regardless of skill, with the right chip library setup. The quick kills on bosses are living proof of this. The game has an extremely high skill ceiling once you're in a battle, but even before that, you can trivialize the fight with a well thought out strategy and the right element chips.Of course, very few people were building an entirely new library for every boss, until the postgame where you needed those S ranks and the bosses were overwhelming, sometimes a kill or be killed in 30 seconds or less.

    Mastering these games becomes an artform, especially battle network. I love watching people desimante bosses with crazy ass setups.

    it's kinda sad how extremely, excruciatingly overlooked this series is, I have not heard a singular person mention or talk about this game who *didnt* play it as a kid/when it was relatively new. I just got into the series 2 years ago and have been near-obsessed with it since then (I have alot of trouble actually beating the games though. not for the usual reason of me not completing RPGs (laziness/boredom) but because it is either RIDICULOUSLY hard or I have to grind for specific cards and backtrack a ton.)
    anyway, back to the point; for how simply amazing these games are, from the intense but skillful gameplay to punishing boss fights to incredibly fun characters and absolutely magnificent music, its painful to see it NEVER mentioned or discussed or come up in convos about "best action-rpg games" or "hardest and most rewarding games that aren't named dark souls"

      it definitely helped me get obsessed with the game when I found these like, illustrated walkthrough on some website. an artist basically painted a walkthrough and loaded it with humorous remarks and my god it just further cemented my absolute love for MMBN 1 and 2 (I dont think they did any past those two games..)

    I'm making my way through the battle network franchise (just finished 2) but i honestly don't think it's that hard, you only need to fight a virus 2 or 3 times to get the behavior down along with a strategy and the bossed patterns are well telegraphed, the game is also very generous with money and healing chips, imo megaman zero 1 and 2 are harder
    Edit: after playing through the whole series i can say that i was able to strong arm it with very few deaths, specially after 4 with the counter system

    nice video but I cant agree, dark souls tends to have very little wiggle room as where MMBN3, if you have a decent grasp on the battle mechanics provides a lot of wiggle room. dark souls sets you back every time you die as where in MMBN you can save almost anywhere and game gives access to very powerful battle chip early on such as anti-dmg, mine and the monster that is the life sword program advance, seriously it hits like a truck. battle chips like stone, area steal and panel brake can turn the tide of battle as they can cut off ground attacks, steal enemy zones, and provide cover. dark souls also locks you into a build for the most part as you cant really change your play style due to its leveling systems, as where battle network promotes experimenting with the battle chip system as well as the navi customizer.
    in short my point is that while at surface level they can seem similar in practice they operate vastly different. I don't mean to offend though this is just my thoughts.

      @Ssss Nake Hmm... I never claimed it to be clickbait. I take your lashing out and emotional reaction to be mildly interesting projection. Saying anything can be compared to anything is, of course, a meaningless statement because you lack any standard or definition. Can anything be compared to anything? Well yeah, they are both made of matter, take up space and can be interacted with! So anything can be compared to anything! A tiger is the exact same thing as a pillow!
      When you're ready to realize there are nuances to these things and realize that applying different standards can lead to different forms of comparisons (like that things can be compared in how they differ, not just in how they are similar), then we can continue this dialogue.

    Imo Battle Network 3 is harder than souls-like games. Dark Souls, Monster Hunter, etc all have telegraphed realistic windups that are intuitive because they are how physiology and physics actually work. Battle Network games just launch the most insane screen-wide attacks and combos at you without that same kind of intuitive telegraphed windup.
    Additionally, people have done no damage runs of every souls-like game. Nobody has ever or will ever be able to do that on the Battle Network games. All the damage IS avoidable, but it's just wayyy too hard nobody can come even close.

  • @TheWwemaster123

    I'm surprised that to this day in my first play through I made it as far as I did with the bug-style. I personally eventually got stuck with the undernet ranking, in particular the part where you had to go and find the hint for rank 3 or 4 (The one where you had to find origami birds in the room of mamoru) to the point of resetting thinking I did something wrong. When I got past that, it took me till I got the +300 or 400 HP navicust part and the folderback chip from the bugfrag trader before I finally beat Alpha. Nowadays I can blast through the games and largely know exactly what to do.
    Another fun fact: Back when I got the game, in the store I originally grabbed the box for the white version of the game. But at the register the clerks accidentally switched mine with the blue version as they swapped the empty box with the box with the actual game and such, which in the end did help me cause blue had the folderback chip.

    I remember getting quite good at the first 3 Battle Networks back in the day. Not much of a master strategist with regard to the building chip folders, but definitely capable of beating most bosses in one go. I missed out on 4 & 6 and never got to complete 5 due to my GBA crapping out on me and waiting until the 3ds had been out for a while before getting another Nintendo Handheld. Really hope that Legacy Collection comes soon!

    Eh, not that I disagree with BN3 being a fairly tough game. But I feel like you could say this about a lot of older games. I feel like people give Dark Souls a bit too much credit when it comes to how challenging it can be since I know there have been plenty of games before it that were harder and at least half of them follow the simple to learn but hard to master mindset. This isn't to say Dark Souls is an easy game (or that it can't be hard), just that it isn't a really a high bar if you've played games for any decent amount of time.

    • @goji3755
      @goji3755 2 роки тому

      Trying a similar no-death run now. BN3 Blue was also my first BN game (my first of any kind of Mega Man game, tbh), back in the good ol' days, and I played the HELL out of it. Playing it all these years later with a PC controller has been a bit more challenging, as the buttons are a lot thicker and stick for a split second before rising back up, which makes a HUGE difference in a game like this. But it'll tide me over while we wait for the Legacy Collection.

    Honestly, having played the entirety of the MMBN series, I would not have considered Dark Souls to have these in common...
    Thinking back, though, after effectively mastering MMBN6 and the absurdity of the postgame bonus bosses (Protoman FZ and Bass SP, BX doesn't appear often enough to practice against), it makes most of the past games laughably easy by comparison... So it's probably no wonder why the link never really clicked to me.
    It would have been interesting to see some examples, though...

    • @IanTalksAboutStuff
      @IanTalksAboutStuff  3 роки тому +1

      1 in particular is so different mechanically (healing after every battle, etc) that comparing difficulty is weird but yeah I would say 3 is the hardest. It's also hard to judge because 4 onward have enemies that are much weaker in a vacuum but PAs had been toned down so much that it was harder to trivialize fights.
