Regret and Failure in The Legend of Zelda
Figuring out the theme of a work is fun in itself, but things get even more interesting when looking for shared themes across different pieces of art. In this video I discuss the theme of failure, and how it is treat across three different Zelda games (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Breath of the Wild.

Mixed-Up Metaphors in Hellfire

Tried something a little different with this one. Let me know whether you think the comics are effective, and also whether or not I'm so un-funny I should avoid them like the plague. This one's an analysis on The Hunchback of Notre Dame's track, "Hellfire." There's a lot of interesting symbolism and imagery to unpack here, and I do like how the video came out overall.

This short manga has a lot of things to love, but the title in particular stands out as unique and special to me. 1 thing I didn't talk about in the video was the name of the disease, "Kokhaku disease." This name is probably significant in some way, because "Kokuhaku" is the Japanese word for a love confession, and the first character in the title is usually read as "Koku" but I'm not sure how ...

Also note how every time Frollo prays in earnest, i.e. not to quiet his own guilt, the musical tone shifts away from dark, strong tones and towards more lighter ones - this is most obvious in the moment where he prays for Maria to protect him, and for god to have mercy on him, two of the only moments where he seems to put aside his own desires and pride.

I personally believe the entire part where he sings "Like fire, hellfire, this fire in my skin. This burning desire is turning me to sin" is him realising in real time that he himself is actually a sinful man, and will suffer divine punishment. When he sings "like fire, hellfire!" I think it's him realising that what's blazing inside of him is actually hellfire, which terrifies him because he knows that if he's being hurt by hellfire, it means that he's sinful, and is being punished by God and is on the path to eternal damnation. This would completely shatter his reality which is why I think he's so aghast when he sings "like fire", it's the first the he's made the connection, he's shocked. When he continues with "this burning desire is turning me to sin", I don't think he's blaming the hellfire for turning him to sin, I think he's continuing the realisation and saying that he's becoming sinful on his own accord; his burning desire is turning him to sin, and then the next part of the song is him going into denial.

I haven’t seen any comments about the faceless guard reporting that Esmeralda escaped. That was God answering Frollos prayer, giving him an opportunity to just let Esmeralda go.

God have mercy on her and kyrie eleison is taken from a scene in the book in which Frollo takes the captured Esmeralda in front of the Notre Dame to confess her "sins" in front of the people of Paris. God have mercy on her/him is what the priest was supposed to say after hearing the confession of someone sentenced to death.

While you might be correct on the objective of hellfire, I think you misunderstood something which is the religious hypocrisy of Frollo. He doesn't see the fires of hell as something that punish the sinners for their own good. He wants they punished for his own amusement.

I would actually say the lines "Like fire, Hellfire. This fire in my skin" is not contradictory at all. As this video established, hellfire is for burning sinners. In these lines, Frollo is describing himself as burning. Ergo, he seems to be acknowledging, at least on a subconscious level, that he is sinning and "burning" as a result.

  • @Flame-rp6yq

I think it's in the sense of Frollo already seeing himself as "Holier than thou" speaking to the Virigin Mary about how pure and holy he is (especially above that of a weak, indecent promiscuous man), so why is God now testing him with Esmerelda, if he has already proven how holier and pious he's been? questioning if he himself is truly as holy as his believes, when he is so enamored with her? Immediately going to how it must be witchcraft! Lulling him in with her siren's song, and how it's not truly his fault, it's because of how evil she is! Easily dealing with shifting the blame to of her, instead of his own, dark desires, since that must be the reason why that he is being so easily swayed, it's that she is but a sorceress! Using her powerful dark magicks against his piety! Almost painting Esmerelda as a personification of his guilt. referring to hellfire because she is the reason his is being brought down to that of a common man, both testing and punishing him with any attraction he feels to a mere commoner, and a Romani one if that, giving the ultimatum of either letting him indulge in his own trial by fire, or giving Esmerelda her own.

Why does this guy's way of thinking so closely relate to the mindset of a certain mid 20th century central European political movement, headed by a certain Austrian painter? Does that have anything to do with the people who composed and produced all this musicals and songs?

I also like to think when the tall people red robes turn into fire is more of foreshadowing what will happen to him for after all, he IS blaming God for what he’s feeling and that is a very huge no-no

Uhh, something to note about witches is that the Catholic Church doesn't believe in them. In fact, they think it's heresy to believe that any supernatural power that doesn't come from God or His messengers exists. Now, I'm not sure if this is intentional, but either way, it adds to Frollo's hypocrisy. In trying to shift the blame for his sins, he's just committing another one.

Interestingly enough, “Mea culpa” and “mea maxima culpa” are the first two lines in the Judge’s song “Johanna” in Sweeney Todd. That song, like “Hellfire,” is a classic villain song.

It would be interesting to compare this song with Te Deum from Puccini's Tosca (which I believe was an inspiration) as well as Claggart's aria from Britten's Billy Budd. Both have similar themes of villainous lust (and kickass music).

Ahh.. during the adventure I will have died like 15 or a little more times during the whole game. I just passed it recently. I don't understand why it would be difficult and frustrating as a soul. that if, without equipping yourself well and putting together good strategies it will be impossible for you. Ask who completed a bn without chips or lvl up's with anything. not counting optional fights that I have not seen the "game over".

Guard interrupting Frollo was last resort of saving him from his actions by mind represened by chorus. Guard is like an angel, staying in light and saying that Esmeralda is gone, implying that Frollo should give up on his plans. But Frollo distances himself from that concept saying to guard (AKA concept of angel and therefore heaven) to get out, as he stays with fire alone, which makes his evil mindset win and set decisions that chorus mindset wanted to prevent.

Though I can't find it, I remember reading ages ago an interview with one of the leads on the series (probably series creator/director Masahiro Yasuma?) remarking on one of the core design philosophies of the series: It should be difficult, but anyone should be able to beat every boss, regardless of skill, with the right chip library setup. The quick kills on bosses are living proof of this. The game has an extremely high skill ceiling once you're in a battle, but even before that, you can trivialize the fight with a well thought out strategy and the right element chips.Of course, very few people were building an entirely new library for every boss, until the postgame where you needed those S ranks and the bosses were overwhelming, sometimes a kill or be killed in 30 seconds or less.

Thanks for doing this--I was literally just looking for such a thing to help explain stuff to a friend. Dimitri is kinda like Seliph if Seliph was a survivor of the Battle of Belhalla. I just realized that Seiros/Rhea is kinda a "what if Maera succeeded in reforming the Loptuous Church?" Sure, Rhea started the Seiros Church, but she did still carry through with the historical revisionism similarly to how Maera did so--as noble champions who lost their way!

From what I was taught hellfire was something made of the wicked to punish the wicked, something to be feared and inherently negative in it's existence rather than positive, I assume the writers had something similar in mind when creating the song. It could also be that Frolo fears the feeling of hellfire as it implies he is wicked and deserving of it, something that obviously clashes with his egotistical view of his own virtue

The cinematography in this really emphasises the lyrics of the song. When Frollo is interrupted, it is by a guard, shrouded in white light whilst Frollo stands in front of the fire. A lot of people say that the gaurd is outlined by Heavens Light, and is the help that he had begged Maria for. Yet he not only refuses to let Esmarelda go and thus stop his feelings, he scorns the guard, turning against the help he begged for and degrading it. Also, the part where he throws the scarf into the fire is very interesting. The angle at which the audience faces Frollo makes it look as if his arm is also in the fire, which I think symbolises that his condemnation of Esmarealda is also his own condemnation. By wishing Esmarelda to 'taste the fires of Hell', he is also setting himself on the same path, he is throwing himself into the fire that he before thought was thrust upon him, but now he is willingly traversing through it in order to have even a small chance of gaining Emareldas favour.

I know this is two years late, but if I don't say what I noticed I might forget forever. I see the contradiction between hellfire's true purpose and how Frollo describes it to actually fall in line with each other. If hellfire punishes sinners, and Esmeralda's beauty is like hellfire, then the metaphor makes sense in that regard because of how it's affecting Frollo, the worst of sinners in the movie. It even evokes Frollo's downfall and descent into actual hellfire, too.
