  • Join me on a trip back to the Game Boy Advance and reminisce on the weirdest Megaman sub-series. It may not be as good as I remember but oh well, it's still the start of something great!
    ---------------------------------------------------
    I don't own Megaman or any related properties.
    All music in this video is from Megaman Battle Network.

    Yes I am incredibly mediocre at the game, thank you for noticing.
    I don't really care how you say Chaud. Say it however you want.
    I might touch on the remake at some point in the future.
    Yes I'm covering all the main Battle Network games as well.

      Played every single battle network growing up except for the first. I got mmbn2 as a Christmas gift or something. Nice to know I didn't miss much.
      Also, yes, I agree mmbn4 was a downgrade after playing 3. Tedious, repetitive, less fun battlechips, permanently missable battlechips (Some battlechips of a certain lettercode were 2nd playthrough only).
      I still miss style change.

      I was wonder why you didn't play the 2009 remake of this game which got some voice acting, fixes for all the issues you complained in the video, quality of life improvement from later games such as chip sorting, reduced random encounter rate and an alternate Megaman that has a shield and a lock-on gap close.
      Many issues mentioned in this video were already fixed in 2009 remake and it's a much nicer experience as the first entry for the series.

      In interviews the team explains that this was intentional. Apparently hey were looking into tech progress and I guess some sciences or psychological predictors (I honestly forgot the terminology they used) to help guide them on judging what tech in real life would be progressing into the future so they added details that would reflect how those may be useful or interesting or even just details for world building.
      They kinda got lucky on all the details that hi and ended up actually being what we experience now. I'd guess the details that missed faded into the background of the game and we dismiss how weird those may be with "ah its just the game" so we don't really even think about them as much if at all.
      Super interesting they were beyond just creative predictors, they straight us used statistics and science to help dictate what the future of tech would look like.

    • @snintendog
      @snintendog 3 роки тому +18

      @@SKysofRain another game that did that was the .hack//quadrilogy in the tech news section there are examples of home automation controllable by texting them, the affordable VR by 2016, how stupidly connected society was and how that was a horrid idea and how more and more issues come up IE major infrastructure like gas pipelines the power grid to dam release valves could be controlled from the net to even how a majority of them are born from incompetence of tech oligarchies rather than malice....most of the time. There seemed to be a theme in the early 2000's that letting tech have too much control was a horrible idea...Disaster report had things like that too now that i remember it.

      BN3 is balanced...?
      I'd say BN5 is closer to being as balanced as 6... If only because of how restrictive that game made folder building.
      I can't comment on BN4, because... There's possibility for innovation, but Airhockey is broken. I do wonder if it's possible to break your own panels to prevent your opponent's Airhockey... Eh.
      But BN3? May I remind you about the F Folder with its infinite stun and high damage output, which turns the game into who can press A first? And how there's a shit ton of defense chips that can drag a game out longer than it needs to be? Oh yeah, and as mentioned, folderbak, particularly if used along with the 11th chip glitch. Plantman lock can also be pretty terrifying as well... Oh, also, you don't have any breaking chips, have fun with your opponent spamming barriers until they have Holy barrier. Then have fun with not being able to deal damage. The tornado folder is at its most fun here though at least, what with having the most consistency here.

    So fun fact about the battery level, if time runs out you are treated to a cutscene where it looks like its game over, but in reality the scientist next to you will give you an item to restore power, so the time limit is actually just there to scare you, you were never in any actual danger. all that happens is a quick mini game of pressing A as fast as you can and you can continue on.

    Eugene's Japanese name, 炎山(Enzan), is a fictional name that is a pun of 演算(calculate) and happens to mean “flame mountain” so that the name seems more natural than just “calculation.” No one is named like that in real life, nor is it a real, used word like 火山(Kazan =“fire mountain” = volcano).
    Likewise, Lan's Japanese name, 熱斗(Netto) is a pun of ネット((inter)net), where 熱 is “heat” and 斗(to) is a popular naming convention (in fiction and real life) that not even the Japanese people (mostly) know the meaning of (so it’s not that important). This also is a exclusively fictional name.
    I like how there is subtle characterization expressed in the meanings in the names, even if it is coincidental. Lan and Eugene both have a burning passion within themselves, despite having opposite personalities.

      Just to add a bit of context... the Kanji of 伊集院 炎山 (Ijuuin Enzan) individually each have their own meanings and multiple ways they can be read.
      炎 - En in Enzan, is normally homura or honoo (note honoo is not like noodle, but pronounced honoh. double letters only change length not sound). It has the meaningo of fire normally, but when pronounced 'en' is typically used at the end of a word to create a disease name, written in dictionaries as -itis. It can certainly be used out of these contexts, but its sort of hit or miss in modern japanese, whether any of the kanji meanings directly matter to the meaning of a word. There's a reason they were chosen, but its a reason that even japanese people rarely ever think about.
      山 Zan, in Enzan, is most normally read yama but can also be mure. Mure meaning hill, Zan meaning Mt. (in the way Mt. Everest, but not typically used to mean "a mountain" only as part of the name of the mountain). Yama, means mountain... and also Hill, mine, heap, [crown (the hat), thread (of a screw), tread (of a tire), any other protrusion all count as the same word], [Climax, peak, critical threshold, again one word], [guess, gamble, speculation, one word], (slang for) a crime or criminal case, a festival float, especially one with a halberd, a wall tile in the mahjong, or, a temple or grounds containing a temple even if not actually built on a hill.
      So to say "Enzan" as written means "flame mountain" is... true... but not true... Just people named Tanaka 田中, aren't necessarily named "middling quality rice field"...its just the symbols of their name. (Many kanji spellings of words have actually changed a lot over centuries even when the meaning and pronunciation haven't)

    I don't know if someone has explained this yet, but Enzan when written as 演算 can mean "operate" but his given name is written as 炎山 which isn't a word (just a way to write a name) but 炎 individually means flames and 山 means "mountain."
    In other words, its a kanji reference to a firey mountain (ie: a volcano), but it also is pronounced the same way as "operate."

    • @vtuberfanjames

      Popping in for more info even if it's late. The video mentions "kazan" (火山) being a fire mountain. The "ka" bit is more like a general term for fire, as in the element, or when something is burning. 炎 on the other hand is more intense so usually the translation that's used for that becomes blaze (probably why Enzan is Chaud Blaze in the anime localization).
      On a somewhat connected but unrelated note, the pokemon Entei is probably spelled as 炎帝, which would mean flame emperor, but we can't be too sure because all pokemon names are spelled with katakana.

      When translating you have to choose between the straight pronunciation, the straight translation or the meaning. You also have to account for the difference in the way the language and cultures vary between the two countries. Sometimes the straight pronunciation would be too unnatural. English names don't end in U. So the translator/s went with a happy middle ground by choosing a name that kept the thrust of the original pronunciation, made a pun on email, and sounded like it could be a normal name in English.

    • @natchu96
      @natchu96 3 роки тому +6

      on the flip side of english names never really ending in u, Japanese names (or even words at all) don't ever end in consonants that aren't n. So any attempt at rendering an english word like "mail" in Japanese inevitably has a u at the end. It's a really short u just shy of silent anyhow, so take what you can get really.

    • @UniGya
      @UniGya 2 роки тому +10

      They dropped the U because her name was always a pun on the word "mail," as in email. Calling her Meiru or Maylu would be a direct translation but it would make the pun less obvious, and the point of localization is to convey the same meaning if a direct translation would muddle it.

      BN1 did very well introducing something so brand new for MM and even rpgs in general. That battle system is a genius invention for a gba game. Let's remember that the classic MM1 was also poor compared to the sequels.
      These things are common to happen in game history (especially early), when the makers are handling a good number of original ideas that they dont have much reference of implementation. And whenever it doesnt happen that way, which is very rare, whenever a game bringing very original ideas gets many things right, the makers become reverred as extraordinaries in the field (rightfully).

    Um, the big reason it sounded like that was because there was no sound chip. It was handled by the CPU which meant it got weird effects depending on what other processes it was doing. It also lacked the ability to play pre-recorded music which is one of the reasons it sometimes struggles to copy the SNES since that one did have that capability.

    Nice video series. I am pretty sure Dr. Froid is supposed to be pronounced « Froh-wah », not « Froyd ».
    Froid is the French for « cold », hence both a logical name for the human thematically linked to Ice Man and the Ice Dungeon, as well as the enemy introduced opposite Chaud (French for hot/warm as you figured out).
    Froid’s Japanese name is 氷川 which sounds and looks like a regular Japanese surname but can be read literally as « Frozen River » .
    PS: Also! Dr. Hikari is another pun. He has the same name in Japanese. Hikari means light in Japanese, so he is the game’s Dr. Light. But Hikari was also the common name given to high speed internet in Japan (Hikari Fiber is the local term for « fiber-optic cable ») in the early to mid 2000s, before the avent of WiFi.

      Some BN designs are not good, but still more interesting than the old robots. Although it's ok to give it a lot of slack because it was games from the 80's. Most BN designs are very good anyway.
      I think if the classic MM series was rebooted somehow, all old robots would be redesigned to look cooler. The general design style of MM11 robots, being more elaborate than the wacky ones from NES games, give a good clue of the direction that the redesigns would take. Some of the MM11 robots even look like they would fit a BN game.

    I don't know about Chaud's japanese name, but a way to connect the two (calculate and fire) would be the "HCF" command/joke/legend of imputing a command to halt a CPU and/or make it go through many busses and heat up. It was referred as "Halt and Catch Fire"... sort of a "calculate until you burn" so maybe if that legend got to Japan then it'd make sense.

It's much faster than standard trashbins because you have like 20 people all doing it in 1 container that can be dumped all at once.
