The lyrics of this song send a different vibe compared when the song is watched with official clip.. First of all album got out without clip but back then was not too much just lyrics on radio and plenty other trash heavy-metal bands wrote & played something similar i had this first on vinyl it sounds epic then on cassette-player.. so moving few years latter (cd- coming out) they decide to do a clip for it and throw it on MTv and after watching it, i really felt so much different associating all the lyrics with the clip, just how they intended to be (not how i imagined when i was hearing the song first time without the clip).. With the video this song hits much harder because you feel the pain & suffering like you are teleported right there, and then drums+guitars are like machine-guns are just so on point with the story and action from the clip..
I'm so jealous of you.. I wish I could go back in time and hear this song again for the first time. It completely blew my mind the first time I heard it back in the day. It was wonderful reliving that feeling through you. The solo in this song is my favorite solo in all of metal. The whole song is a masterpiece.
I have those last few lyrics on the back of my only band shirt. absolutely chilling words that depict the horrors of warfare and the consequences on humans
No matter what you are going through it could always be worse!!! A land mine could take your sight take your speech take your hearing yourarms your legs so don’t ever give up on life.
ONE is a masterpiece! A truly powerful song that not only shows Metallica's prowess for song writing, but also their mastery of their instruments. It anchors a catalog of music by them that is truly incredible. Now that you have absorbed the lyrics, give the official video a watch. The imagery provides even more emotion to those lyrics, as they come to life right in front of you with what is being shown. Also, it is really cool seeing them just jamming. You won't be disappointed.
Love the videos! You should definitely check out Slipknot, some of their songs like Duality, The Devil In I, Dead Memories, Solway Firth, Vermillion, Nero Forte, Snuff, Psychosocial, Sulfur, Unsainted, etc have heavy messages in them, and the music videos are great. You should definitely check them out.
So glad you reacted to this song. Some people don't like reacting to the official video because they think it's distracting, but it really gives you a visual meaning of the song. In my opinion, it's the perfect metal song.
Trust me. When us as teens heard this...beauty, sadness and horror was hard to process. So usually we'd just headbang to the music and didn't focus as much on the lyrics. Some songs merited knowing the lyrics but back then it was about the music and how it made you feel.
“One” is a masterpiece. IMO the best song ever written, but at the least, the best metal song. What a joy to watch someone experience it for the first time. Kathryn if you ever get the chance to see them live, do NOT pass it up. Their music comes alive in a totally different way.
Metal in its own right helps us to voice the emotions we hold back. Metallica is one of those few Metal groups that can evoke emotional turbulence with so much of their music. This track was the 7 steps all rolled into one.
This song is based on the movie Johnny Get Your Gun. The music video, which is MUST SEE, incorporates some of the movie into it. It helps you understand the song more.
In my opinion this is the best way to listen to this song. You can just listen to this master piece without getting confused by trying to keep up without the visual interference.
Honestly, I'm glad you did the studio version with lyrics as your first listen through. Most people do the music video, and because there's a lot of talking and sound effects over the song in the music video, you can't quite hear everything quite as well. But now that you've listened to the studio version, checking out a live version is a good idea. One is definitely a top 10 Metallic song. I highly suggest reacting to Blackened and Harvester of Sorrow, which are both from the same album as One. Other great songs from them are The Four Horsemen, Fight Fire with Fire, Wherever I May Roam, Spit out the Bone, and Disposable Heroes. I'm digging your channel!!
this song is based on a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" - 1971 When they performed this at the Grammys they went from Metal kings to Metal gods! Oh and yes please please please please ORION!!!!
My head bobs the same way when that machine-gun beat kicks in. I feel this song in my soul. I was a combat medic in the Army and saw firsthand the effect of war casualties.
Totally agree with your methodology of doing studio versions with lyrics. It's closer to how us "old timers" did it; with just the audio and the liner notes that often accompanied the album/CD. That said, you do need to see the music video to this one as it is phenomenal and expands on the story of the song. It contains clips from the movie that was based on the book that inspired this song. 👍🏽😎
Master of puppets, enter sandman, one, call of ktulu, Orion, fade to black, unforgiven, king nothing, no leaf clover. Some of my favorite Metallica songs.
Your reaction to "One" earned you my subscribe hit...my introduction to you was a few minutes ago with one of my favourite Bands, Pearl Jam with my favourite song by them Black with maybe my favourite verses in a song ever....but the way you 'felt" THIS song 'One' is what moved me...this is a classic and the album came out when I was a teenager and really my first foray into Metal...I absolutely loved the way it moved you and you just reacted to the beautiful piece...more than the song I love that ANY music can make a person feel the way you felt is why music is so important to me and why being human in this time is so beautiful like this song and so many other we have yet to discover...Thank you for this reaction.
"Fed through the tube that sticks in me" "Can't tell if this is true or dream" I wrote an essay comparing this song and All Quiet on the Western Front for school. I am 15 years old, starting playing drums when I was 4, and mastered this song at 10.
When you get a chance, watch the music video. Even more emotional than the song by itself. This was their first ever music video released back in 88-89 (can't remember lol).
Well I can easily say this is by far and away the best reaction I have ever seen to this or any song/video. I was young when this came out and loved it then, still do today. Great off the charts reaction!!!!!!
The original video has parts of the movie, Johnny Got His Gun, from 1971 you will understand the song a lot more. I remember watching them in concert and that same night is when the video was released. It took like a week for or so till I finally saw the video on MTV, back then when they actually played videos on that channel.
Metallica is one of the few bands that have really good full LP albums. You could react to so many song from Metallica, not only the famous ones. Keep rocking!
Completely 100% Agree...ONE is my all-time favorite song..period!! Even after all these decades of listening to it, I still get goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME...ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE!!
Finally someone reacting to the song itself and not the captions in the official video version. Thank you, and congratulations for knowing the best song ever
Love your reaction to this song, it is as you said very beautifully done. By far their best song as far as composition and complexity goes, an absolute masterpiece of musical artwork. They performed this song LIVE at the 31sr Annual Grammy Awards in 1989, and the very next FRICKIN WON a Grammy Award for best metal performance. 25 years later in 2014 they returned to the Grammys to perform the song once again.
I love your Metallica reactions. You have full body reactions. You have the exitement to explore Metallica in a short time for what i have done in 40 years. I love it.
IT'S OKAY TO LISTEN TO THE STUDIO VERSION THE FIRST TIME. I WOULDN'T SAY YOU SHOULD REACT TO THE LIFE VERSION BECAUSE THE BEST WAY TO UNDERSTAND THIS MASTERPIECE IS LISTENING AND WATCHING THE OFFICIAL VIDEO. YOU SHOULD WATCH IT, IT WILL BRING YOU ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE 🤘🏼🎶
Exactly. Sad thing about Metallica is that a lot of their amazing special songs don't really have the same punch and feel in the live version. The best example for that would be Fade To Black
Been listening to this for about 30 years...this is the first time I've noticed that the drums before the solos sounds like a heartbeat as if emphasizing all he could hear! Amazing song!
I grew up with these guys in the San Francisco Bay Area. I must tell you, these guys are as good today as they were back in the day. If you get a chance, you must see them live. Totally worth every penny for the price of admission
I've watched your reactions to the Metallica videos and I see that you really love them because it always looks and sounds like you're having a "Big O". Keep up the great reactions!
Perfect! Now u have heard the song, understand the meaning, now u are ready for the official video! Te official video is just too much to take in and hear the music, but now u can watch it, knowing the lyrics and really get ur feelings touched by the video! Trust me it is an experience all its own!
My grand uncle was in the 1st world war. He survived wounded. Whole life traumatized. This song and 1916 by Motörhead are true anthems about the victims of the WW I.
"One", and the whole "...justice for all" album was my opener in the metal-world. I guess I was 14/15 years old, back in the days. Love Metal since then. Thank you for your great reaction to this masterpiece.
Beautiful, beautiful song. To think that this album was the first one I heard from them thanks to my brother giving it to me ❤ Thanks for your reaction.
Finally someone with the sense to listen to this masterpiece of a song that's not the video version, does my head when so many reaction channels react to this watching the video version and they all forgot about what it's about the music, all more bothered about the video itself instead and commont on that and get distracted by it.
Listening to a "studio version" of a song is absolutely fine. So many people are exposed to a song the "very first time" through a studio version being played on the radio or through an album or streaming services. Not everyone experiences a song for the first time by being able to see the band perform live. PLUS, a ton of "live performances" tend to be iffy at best due to recording equipment used, sound levels being used at shows, "directors" who tend to focus on random things and not the band playing, or simply being a "bad version" of the show when the band alters the lyrics or music for one reason or another. There are a ton of songs where you can actually HEAR the lead singer trying to "hold back" in order to keep their voice for an upcoming song, or to keep their voice for upcoming shows... meaning that they aren't giving their full performance like they did when they were first recording the song.
Every time I listen to One it's like the first time. There are few songs on the planet that have that kind of power. Very few bands in history have created anything close to One. I consider it their magnum opus, even with the lack of audible bass.
So many of these reaction videos are from my childhood, early adulthood years. Imagine being around when this stuff came out. Having been in the Army now for almost 23 years, this song hits me differently. I've had friends or worked with people who resemble what is being talked about in this song. A guy I went to the board with for Sergeant lost his leg, as a Physical Therapy Tech, I worked with triple amputees and those who lost their sight. And other things.
It's so awesome to see more people react t the music I grew up with the 4 great ones are still alive and influencing all around this was back in 88 I was less than 10 and Metallica with Iron Maiden , Black Sabbath , Led zepellin and of course the big 4 of thrash another metal head in the making we got here, Welcome !!!
Im glad your enjoying Metallica, Ive been supporting them since the 80's which is also my favorite music by them... but if you want to get to see them they are on tour... I have my tixx for Gianys Stadium in August
I wish nothing more than to hear this song again for the first time. I was 11 when it came out, and it didn't mean much then, but now that I'm 45 years old, it's completely different.
This song still makes me cry. I wasn't in a good mental place when it came out in 1988. Lucky to be here, today. That's about as far as I want to go into it.
On the night of September 15 2001, while I was in liberty from the Marine Corps I slid down a 40' cliff and suffered a class 3 tramdic brain injury. After I spent two months at the a hospital in California, then I got life flighted up to a VA. I remember laying in the bed in the VA and this song was going through my head.
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on the Song ONE bey METALLIC THE LYRICS ARE INCREDIBLE AND THE INTERMENTS ARE OUT OF THIS WORKD .I ENJOY THIS VIDEO BETTER THAN THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO.
How I envy people, who hear Metallica for the first time. Metallica has appeared in my life since 1993 with the song One. I didn't know then that it was possible to play like this. Metallica soundtrack of my life
Tanxugueiras is a trio formed by Aida Tarrío, and the twins Olaia and Sabela Maneiro. They are from Galicia, northwestern Spain. They almost always sing in Galician, Galicia's own language, although they have sung in Spanish in some performances. They also play the tambourine in many of their performances. The name of the group comes from the toponymy: it is the name given to farms where badgers (teixugos in galician language) usually roam and that in the area of Fumaces, municipality of Riós (province of Ourense) is called tanxugo instead of from teixugo (which would be the correct form) and hence "tanxugueira". Until 2021 this group was known in the field of traditional Galician music but throughout 2021 thanks to the videos of the songs MIDAS and FIGA, in which they mix traditional and modern elements, they became famous outside that field. In the fall of 2021, RTVE, (RadioTelevisión Española) decides to organize a music festival, the Benidorm Fest, to choose the artist and the song that will represent Spain in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest The Eurovision-Spain portal carried out a consultation among its members and readers about possible candidates. The Tanxugueiras prevailed in the vote. This prompted them to appear at the Benidorm Fest with the song “Terra” that combines Galician folklore with electronic percussion. In December 2021, the video of the song was released and can be seen on UA-cam:Tanxugueiras - TERRA (Official Lyric Video). In this video the lyrics of the song are in Galician with subtitles in Spanish and if they do not appear they can be activated in the settings. English subtitles can also be activated. In January 2022 the Tanxugueiras perform in the Benidorm Fest Final and come in third place. The performance can be seen on UA-cam in the video: Tanxugueiras - "Terra" Benidorm Fest 2022 The Grand Final. The song and the staging are a tribute to an aspect of the tradition and culture of Galicia, the figure of the cantareiras, women who sing, and the pandereteiras, who play the tambourine, which enlivened the “foliada” or nocturnal meeting. of people to have fun, sing and dance. The phrase "there are no borders" is said in several languages spoken in Spain: Galician: Non hai fronteiras Basque (Euskera): Ez dago mugarik Catalan: No hi ha fronteres Asturian (Bable): Nun hai fronteres Castellano (often named Spanish: No hay fronteras Sign language, in the last scene of the performance. In the background images of the stage are scenes of women singing and playing the tambourine and of people dancing. The song has the structure of a muñeira, (muiñeira in Galician), a traditional Galician melody in which “ailalala” and “ailalelo” abound. Olaia's “aturuxo” almost at the end of the performance is a high-pitched, loud and prolonged cry that is emitted as a sign of joy at festivals and “foliadas” or while doing some agricultural work. The costumes of the Tanxugueiras are inspired by the traditional Galician gala dress, black with lace and jet decorations and with jet or gold jewels. The makeup simulates the drawings of the lace and the gold leaf on the hair is reminiscent of the gold of the jewels. Aida is the one wearing the braid, Olaia is the one who throws the “aturuxo” at the end of the performance and Sabela is the one wearing the golden ornament on the left side of her hair. I suggest you watch the official video in UA-cam:Tanxugueiras - TERRA (Official Lyric Video), in what you can activate subtitles in English, to understand the lyrics, listen to it several times, even while doing something everyday, and then watch the Benidorm Fest final performance. UA-cam: Tanxugueiras - "Terra" Benidorm Fest 2022 The Grand Final. I list you some videos of this group published on UA-cam in which you will observe an evolution.
The movie/book this song is based on is incredible too. One of those stories that sticks with you forever. "I am the boss, this is champagne, merry Christmas!"... *shudders*
Its my 41st bday today 4th of march... No one around me remembered so my best part of the day was rockin one with u... Thank u , Old skool Metallica fan
I agree to what some comments have mentioned, the video for this song is a must watch and I encourage you to even have a reaction video to it. In fact I think you did yourself a favor by first hearing the song, because the video adds that much more emotional intensity to this epic peice :) P. S: I think Michael has a good music taste lol
Interesting facts about the riffs and drums, Lars and James said in interviews they wanted to simulate gunfire bursts with it, you can hear it clearly at 7:51.
This is in my top 10 Metallica song list. However, my wife cannot listen to it. Her mother lost her battle with ALS years ago. She had to nurse her mother through it and at the end her mother couldn't talk or move anymore so this hits very close to the heart for her. I avoid the song like the plague when she is around (for obvious reasons) but I jam to it on my headphones or when I'm alone in the car ALL THE TIME. Classic Metallica is best Metallica.
I was a barely a teenager when this dropped and it was fkn FIRE 🔥 I love Metallica. Btw, those Blue eyes of yours 😍 that smile… you are Gorgeous. Have a Beautiful day
Ahh, those iconic sextuplets on the double bass drums, synced in with the lead guitar, amazing. I played Marching Percussion, primarily snare, for many years, absolutely love the percussion's pulse through this whole album.
0:12 I'm a big defender of doing the studio version of songs first, unless for some reason the live version was the more popular radio version. For most songs, the studio is how we all first experienced the song, and so I think its the best place to start as a first listen. And then the live performances are good ways to return to the song and get an appreciation for the differences between studio and live.
Finally someone that listsens to the music and notices the lyrics without being distracted by the scenes of the official music video. +100 points for you dear !
@@KathrynLayneReacts Seriously. Listen to this version 2 or 3 more times to get the feel for it, then please react to the official video. It's an absolute necessity and this track will never be complete for you if the video gets skipped. Back in the day, they said they would never sell out, and never make a music video. Well, they made their first video with this track, and spruced it up a little to appease the die-hard fans who didn't want their favorite band to make a mainstream video. I'm one of those who hated that they made a vid, but this was a very good compromise.
That song is a masterpiece, they way it’s start and ending, it’s so powerful. Probably one of the best songs ever!!!

Yep
THE best song ever.

As a veteran, I cannot listen to this without bawling every time. But I love it.

Since you enjoy their musicianship, Orion is a must listen.
Also The Call of Ktulu or To live is to die 🤘🏼
Good call

The song with no beginning and no ending… just a short clip that Cliff plucked from the music that’s floating around in the universe.
I have heard this song literally thousands of times and I still got chills right now.

This was Metallica’s Stairway to Heaven, or Hotel California, if you will - their magnum opus. Timeless metal classic!
Love this description

Was this Metallicas Master of Puppets?

Kind of an Epic Fail to do this reaction without the video for full experience.

The video is too distracting.
You made the right choice. The video is great and definitely worth watching, but it does distract from actually listening to the music.

STRONGLY disagree. Video distracts too much from the music. Great video once you've heard and understand the song, not for a first listen.
I do not believe the band was aware of this movie, when they recorded the song. ( Though obviously they were, when they did the video.)

I just checked Songfacts, and you are right. Except it was the book he read. Not the movie.
Metallica actually purchased the film rights of the movie Johnny Got His Gun so they wouldn’t have to pay royalties for clips playing in their video.

Glad you got around to it and appreciated it as much as you did. I've been keeping an eye out for this One.
OMG
LOVE this lady!
So animated and so fun!
IDK this channel can’t be Kathryn’s first experience in front of a camera.
My first Metallica song and been hooked ever since
*The inspiration comes from the 1939 book; Johnny Got His Gun. Was also a 1971 movie...who's clips are in the 'Official Video.'*
I was 6 in 1989 when this song came on MTV. I turned the tv ALL the way up. I bounced off the furniture. I got grounded. My life changed that day.
Every time I listen to One it's like the first time. There are few songs on the planet that have that kind of power. Very few bands in history have created anything close to One. I consider it their magnum opus, even with the lack of audible bass.
My Mt Rushmore Metallica tracks; One, for whom the bells till, bleeding Me and sanitarium.
The oficial video of this song, ¡that's intense! You must see it
This songs music is insanely awesome. Just freaking incredible!!!
Your reaction was priceless.
Really enjoyed it.
Many thanks
This song is absolute perfection - I loved your reaction to it. Keep it up!!
It's only now that I learned that the song is inspired by the a novel and a movie titled "Johnny got his gun."
Back when this album came out was the why & when I got fully into metal.
Mine was the one before.
Justice was my first metal album and still my favorite
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on the Song ONE bey METALLIC THE LYRICS ARE INCREDIBLE AND THE INTERMENTS ARE OUT OF THIS WORKD .I ENJOY THIS VIDEO BETTER THAN THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO.
The best way to experience. This song is actually the music video uncut because that tells you more of the story that it’s about.
How I envy people, who hear Metallica for the first time. Metallica has appeared in my life since 1993 with the song One. I didn't know then that it was possible to play like this. Metallica soundtrack of my life
Beautiful reaction. Seeing folks love Metallica is amazing.

In the fall of 2021, RTVE, (RadioTelevisión Española) decides to organize a music festival, the Benidorm Fest, to choose the artist and the song that will represent Spain in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest
The Eurovision-Spain portal carried out a consultation among its members and readers about possible candidates.
The phrase "there are no borders" is said in several languages spoken in Spain:
Galician: Non hai fronteiras
Basque (Euskera): Ez dago mugarik
Catalan: No hi ha fronteres
Asturian (Bable): Nun hai fronteres
Castellano (often named Spanish: No hay fronteras
Sign language, in the last scene of the performance.
Brilliant reaction video. Such a amazing song. Look forward to seeing your reaction to the official music video.
just have discovered your channel, your #1 viewer from now on
Your reaction to the greatest song ever written is pure eargasm.
In fact I think you did yourself a favor by first hearing the song, because the video adds that much more emotional intensity to this epic peice :)
P. S: I think Michael has a good music taste lol
The official video (and the movies it references) really illustrates the subject matter here. Appreciate the reaction.
Definitely an amazing song for. The contrast of the story being so dark, but the guitar interludes being cheery and bright works so well somehow
Have a Beautiful day
6:32 is the best guitar tone of any song I’ve ever heard. So crisp and meaningful
Ahh, those iconic sextuplets on the double bass drums, synced in with the lead guitar, amazing. I played Marching Percussion, primarily snare, for many years, absolutely love the percussion's pulse through this whole album.
Too bad they turned down Jason's bass.. it would have been more badass.
I wore out two copies of this cassette cutting grass the summer after it came out. I still remember every song by heart.
Now that you know the song you MUST see the music video version they filmed. It will change EVERYTHING!
Yes! I agree!
It's almost a different song. Definitely a different experience.
Absolutely. The original music clip takes you to another level in this song.
the music video for this song brings even more meaning to the song.....
Gotta check out "Fade to Black." It's from the Ride the Lightening album. It's just as deep, if not deeper, both lyrically and musically.
I love your appreciation for such music.
Im going too a Metallica concert in April im so exited and btw amazing video!
Kathryn!! Your reactions are so animated 😂😂😂
Thanks again for entertaining us 😘
This song is a must watch with the video. It will mean much more and explain a lot.
