He loses his arms and legs and most of his face and is kept alive, but wants to die rather than live on as on object of curiosity. Metallica was so inspired by the movie for the writing of this song that they tracked down and bought the full movie rights to the film so they could use it extensively in the official video.

One is one of the greatest metal songs of all time. If not the best metal song of all time. The solos are perfect and take genuine skill to play, let alone master. The song structure in fantastic, the lyrics are so metal but also deep and have a message. The buildup and payoff in this song is just unlike anything else. Hearing it for the first time is truly an experience.
This song almost has electricity when it begins to crescendo. Just an accumulation of lightning, fire, emotion and it becomes alive, like a dragon made out of those elements that you’re riding. It’s such a good ride. It’s really hard not to feel those lyrics and hear those drums and guitar go off and not just go along for the ride.
It’s about soldiers coming back from war with PTSD and the deep pain their loved ones feel for them. I used to listen to this song in locker-room before every game when played football in college. It puts the mind in such a - calm-explosively-maddening-depression-rage urge - to tear apart the opponent. It gives such a deep appreciation for all those that have served (been to war). Love this damn song so much.
Metallica bought the rights to the movie, so they wouldn't have to pay every time the music video was aired. amazing vid, these guys are legends. glad you watched and are enjoying your journey! 👍
I vividly remember first seeing this video on MTV when it came out in 88...i was 12 and wasnt really into Metallica and yet...little did i know 30+ years later id be watching the same video almost crying at how powerful and beautiful this legendary song is. The mighty Metallica at their best!
I find that in our adolescence that we are not aware of the information that we are aware now and that's super depressing. We are grown that we are seeing the hidden messages from these songs.
7:45 is the Eureka moment. It clicked perfectly for you. Although I probably overplayed it back in the 80's and 90's to the point where it lost its appeal, these reaction videos, 30 years later, allow me to observe other people's first listen and reaction, and rediscover my own appreciation and original love for this song.
Yep, that's really the cool thing about reaction videos. Especially when you know a killer part is coming up and you see their minds blown in real time.
James said that he wrote this song after reading a book where the character went to war but stepped on a landmine and lost everything, his sight, his hearing, his arms and legs, his speech, and feels trapped inside his own body and just wants to die already, and he really related to this part of feeling trapped in his body with only bad things around you
I love that you checked this one out. It's a classic. I can't even imagine being without any senses just alone inside your head forever. I think even hell would be preferable. Master Of Puppets is another great one by Metallica. Greetings from Germany
OMG I love you at 1 minute in - "I need the lyrics!" is my constant refrain when being played new songs, especially when it's a musical like Hamilton. "Sure, keep playing it, the music might get me at points, but if I can read the lyrics I might ball my eyes out, because that's where the emotion lives."
ride the lightning 1000% thought he did master of puppets but if not obviously that too. and Fade to black isn't a favorite of mine but totally get why so many people love it.
I mean hard to pick a best song. Depends on what's going on in your head. Now that I'm old I don't bother with a best song though I just play the black album, ride the lighting, or S&M back to back for hours of awesome driving or lifting.
Remember watching the film when i was a kid. They had to buy the rights for the movie to be able to use the film clips. Then to hear this for the first time on the album then see them play it live is insane. Brilliance at its best. Keep up the reactions Stevie, from a Brit fan.

The lyrics were always secondary to me with this masterpiece but after hearing you analyze them I realize they might be my favorite part now. Thank you for that brother

Then this old veteran became "WOKE" and ready for the fight. lol Just saying even at my age these guys will inspire you disabled or not.
I appreciate you checking out the lyrics. Now that you’ve got the song lyrics and meaning understood, I hope on your own you can check out the full video again. I remember when this dropped on MTV. At the time. It was a “thing”. Their first video. This song and album took them to another level as a band.
Stevie I’m surprised to see you covering this. Very cool man. Metallica is amazing!
He did master of puppets if you haven’t checked it out. It’s a great reaction lol
The song was inspired by an old book/movie called “Johnny Got His Gun” about a WW1 vet that gets shredded by an explosive cannon shell. He loses his arms and legs and most of his face and is kept alive, but wants to die rather than live on as on object of curiosity.
Metallica was so inspired by the movie for the writing of this song that they tracked down and bought the full movie rights to the film so they could use it extensively in the official video.
Wrong
@@jw3807 Right
It turned out to be cheaper for them to just buy the whole movie outright than license parts of it.
Let's go Stevie. The way this song builds is incredible, can't wait to kick back and watch this
And Lars' double kicks at the end.... whew!!! FIre!

awesome that you got the message but the most chilling is the end of the video when the doctors are getting messages in Morse code saying "kill me, kill me"

I look for reactions on this song allll the time, because its great. No one ever starts it without lyrics, then says, "i need to see the lyrics". I'm glad you did. Its the greatest Metallica song in my opinion. Hits hard.
The video explains it. Dude gets messed up in war. Can talk, lost his limbs, can’t see. Can’t truly communicate and wants to die but they’re keeping him alive
I said the same thing lol, I missed your comment.
LOL TY man, your facial reactions to the music put concert memories in my head !
You sure do wait an awful long time to give the stamp of approval on some of these songs, Stevie... I need that "Yeah, I fuck with this" a bit faster on masterpieces such as this one.
Facts!! Lol
Yeah this song will go down as a musical holy grail.
I come to see reactions but more I come to watch a humble man who understands that true strength is measured by character. Stevie you stay good!
As someone growing up as a metal head, I loved your stanky face when the bass drums and riff started bangin!
I appreciate someone taking the time to step out of their comfort zone and actually honing in on the message of the piece while consequently enjoying the sound they heard. War is hell and music can be more powerful than any politician's propaganda.
Another great reaction to a Legendary band Stevie! 💯👏🏼👏🏼 This song is a masterpiece in my opinion.
Best moment in a Metallica reaction ever “f$&@ the video l need the lyrics”. Love to see you do Metallica Disposable Heroes - a very similar themed song of a soldier dying on the battlefield
You're not dancing, you're Head Banging!!!!
\m/ \m/
One of my favorite Metallica songs of all time! Thanks for this review Stevie Knight.
Man... been watching you for awhile. I'm an ex hip hop head who gravitated to Rock awhile back, so it's nice to see a fellow hip hip head appreciate Rock. With that said... I think you'll like Avenged Sevenfold... sick guitar solos and Ill beat
Please to meet you man!
Can I recommend the artist Intervals??
The writing and playing is killer!! Very groovy and amazing melodies
Yes!! Avenged Sevenfold!!
You needed the video to understand the premise of the song but you kinda got it right.
I kept telling my husband that there was no way he'd make it thru watching the video. I was surprised he watched as much as he did, actually.
Stevie needs to hear "Sad But True" by Metallica! Perfect song for a hip hop head going on a metal journey!
agree!!
Yes that's the banger for hip hop guys.
Fax bro fax
Thank you for looking up the lyrics. Real Reactor. The instruments are the emotion. The solo in this case.. is the almost gleeful insanity. CRAZY.
Anything from the 80s Metallica albums is gold.
We are grown that we are seeing the hidden messages from these songs.
you must listen the song with the video! There's a story behind. It's a song against war.
James said that he wrote this song after reading a book where the character went to war but stepped on a landmine and lost everything, his sight, his hearing, his arms and legs, his speech, and feels trapped inside his own body and just wants to die already, and he really related to this part of feeling trapped in his body with only bad things around you
"Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo,1939. You're welcome 😁
Always like how the riff and drums sound like a machine gun too. Great song!
I love seeing people open their minds to other types of music ad being surprised at what they like. Music is just like that.
Love seeing you expand your your horizons. Metallica is a good gateway into more metal.
"Fuck bro, what the hell inspired this god damn song?"
War did. Thanks for the reaction.
Ride the lighting. Master of puppets. Fade to black thank me later
DEFINITELY AGREE 💯
Fade to Black one of the best rock songs of all time
ride the lightning 1000% thought he did master of puppets but if not obviously that too. and Fade to black isn't a favorite of mine but totally get why so many people love it.
I mean hard to pick a best song. Depends on what's going on in your head. Now that I'm old I don't bother with a best song though I just play the black album, ride the lighting, or S&M back to back for hours of awesome driving or lifting.
Steve already reacted to Master of Puppets - good reaction and he hits the analysis of the song right on the head.
Remember watching the film when i was a kid. They had to buy the rights for the movie to be able to use the film clips. Then to hear this for the first time on the album then see them play it live is insane. Brilliance at its best. Keep up the reactions Stevie, from a Brit fan.
Pantera “domination (live)” is a great metal song with the best metal guitar and drummer of all time.and the video is wild.

He cares mostly about lyrics though.
This song was from the 80’s so all of us has family members in Vietnam Alis in chains did Rooster about Vietnam. My father and all my uncles were in Vietnam...

Strong video for visual story tellin.. clips from 1971 movie "Johnny got his gun".. good sh!t.. deep..
My man lost.. eyesight.. hearing.. speech.. arms.. legs.. just there living by tubes.. yes Sir video is helpful
I think you definitely missed out with not watching the video, it does help explain the song. Love your work stevie
Damn bro. Thank you for doing this song. You need to do “fade to black” by Metallica.
Seriously, I watch you reading the lyrics as the song continues and those are the emotions because you (and I having to listen to the lyrics) are getting the emotions AND the great musicianship.
Not that you give a sh*it lol but you earned my sub and like by reacting to a lyric video instead of a music video. Props bro! ✊🏽✊🏽
I’ve listened to this song some 15,000 times. When James delivered the “landmine” verse, I got goosebumps up and down my body, all over. Impressive!
YOU NEED TO REACT TO THE MUSIC VIDEO NOW! The music video is made up of clips from the movie that inspired this song's lyrics!
The best part about the long version of the video is the ending with the abrupt sing along that sounds so unsettling after the loud metal ends.
Listen to master of puppets! Liv your work AS usual

People who haven't grown up on Metallica for the last 30 years can't understand just how legendary they are
The lyrics were always secondary to me with this masterpiece but after hearing you analyze them I realize they might be my favorite part now. Thank you for that brother
I feel this song is about mental health. That may not be how everyone else perseveres it. But coming from someone who suffers from mental illness. This song connect's with me on every level.
Music can be interpreted in many different ways, so I can definitely understand why you’d perceive the song as such. It certainly sounds like the song could be about some someone who is suffering from depression.
No matter how many times I hear this song I get goosebumps at the halfway mark when the drums come in sounding like machine guns
You opened the door man im glad u did cause I’ve watched u forever and now u listen to metal on here that’s awesome cause metal is one of the greatest if not the greatest to me.
im always impressed by how much stevie can decipher without the music video. you nailed it, dude.

Stevie. Props for listening to one of the musical masterpieces
Isn't it heartbreaking man. I tear up everytime i hear this song
I love that he pulls up the lyrics instead of guessing what's being said, good reaction
The great thing about music is that the greatest songs leave the interpretation up to the listener. Each individual’s interpretation depends on how the song resonates with that person. Just knowing the lyrics and having your own idea about what they’re saying shows your humanity and individuality
Great reaction.
This song is a three step process.
1. Lyrics video for the vocals
2. Actual video to the song to tie in the meaning
3. The live version. It will pull you into the song. The experience will not disappoint.
I feel fuxed up dancing to this ish shoulda been my hs year book quote
No need to worry about feeling like dancing - this music moves people too! You see the crowds banging around at a concert - that's done in comradery and celebration, getting that anger out in a positive way and getting the fuck down!
Song inspired and cinematic clips from the film "Johnny Got His Gun", an independent film from 1971. Peace!
i hope you went back and watched the video. it's incredible. metallica's first video. they were against making videos until this track. at the time, MTV had first access to certain big videos, so they would tag the video with "exclusive MTV". this was one of them, and it was absolutely huge.
Would have been nice if you saw the video clip for this song. pure amazing
You nailed it soon as you switched to the lyrics. Some reaction videos don’t know what the hell is going on watching the video. Good job!
In case anyone forgot. This is Metallica's 1st music video. And it did not disappoint.
That’s why you needed to keep watching the actual video. It goes with the lyrics to the song.
And dont feel bad for vibing to it. That's the point, to get out of that feeling of hopelessness...feel strong.
The video version has a copy out there somewhere with FULL subtitles
The video is a heart wrenching experience, for sure. It stays with you.
You did hella good explaining the song in just a few words. Keep it up bro appreciate the content.
