There's a LOT of metal music out there that's aggressive and actually has meaning behind it. A LOT. Metal heads have feels too.

I’m not sure if you or anyone else will see this, but here’s what’s going on:
The song One by Metallica is based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo which is about World War 1. It describes the life of a man who goes to war and is a victim of a mortar blowing up in his face which robs him of his ability to see, hear, smell, or taste and blows his arms and legs off. He comes out of a coma while in the hospital and during his time there he reflects on his life and the things his father had told him. Eventually doctors grow worried because he keeps having spasms all the time but doesn’t seem to be dying from them. They call in the general who has no answers for the spasming but a soldier alongside the general recognizes the spasming as Morse code. The general then asks what he’s attempting to communicate and the soldier replies with “Kill me, over and over again. Kill me”.
It’s about a wounded soldier who cannot see, cannot taste, cannot hear, cannot smell, and has no limbs but is very much alive and wishes for death in a constant state of regret and sorrow.
A specific passage from the novel inspired the song: “How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it’s a million to one shot. But if he does win, you’ll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I’d read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn’t believe it because it’s a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. I’d never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one.”
In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie and this music video uses images and monologues from that movie.

It took me over two decades, but I finally managed to go see them live just last year. Best concert I’ve been to, hands down. And this song is a major staple in their performances.

Happy late B-Day! One of my favorite bands also. Been listening to them since the mid 90's and finally got to see them live in Atlanta, GA in 2017. Hands down the most amazing show I've been to. The laser and sound effects when they played One were incredible. We showed up early and sat through two opening acts. When Metallica came on we were standing on the ground in front of the stage. The crowd let out a massive singular cheer. I turned around and I swear it looked like every seat in the stadium was occupied. One of the really cool things was when people shouted, screamed or cheered in unison you could feel it. Absolutely amazing. I'll never forget it. Also crowd was full of people of all ages and everyone we met was really nice.
The best anti war book ever! Read it 5 times. And heard James purchased the rights to the book cause he liked it so much.

as a Veteran from iraq and afgan, this song hits different. paired with the video its even more gripping. it almost hurts to listen to it. which means it was a Masterpiece for what is intended for. soldiers. and also its musically just beautiful how it transitions from slow to heavy to slow to HEAVY

It's for copyright that those people stop videos,alot of people don't really get big of a hurdle it is.You can stop it every three seconds,you can edit however you want, even putting fair use doesn't stop it from being blocked. Copyright is all encompassing. Your video can instantly get taken down with the bot system scanning videos or labels restricting videos with it.Dude you can even literally have the textbook definition of fair use (not reaction videos but things like news coverage and even only playing snippets to promote that artist in like a top ten video).You can also get copyright blocked if you sing the song and play every instrument yourself, still...I think you get the point.
Most do it so it falls under fair use and doesnt break copyrights.

I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and worked in Veterans home with a quadriplegic patient. He only communicated with his eyes. He had been in that same bed for 20 years. He got in a car accident at the age of 18. Makes you appreciate what you have. And makes you feel embarrassed when you start to feel sorry for yourself and your trivial problems that will come and go.
I agree that he had worse issues than you, but you shouldn’t feel weak because you worry about your problems. Your problems are also life altering events. We all have the right to feel sorry for ourselves, everyone has their own problems that cause them stress and sorrow
Trying to bury your feelings because someone else has it "worse" doesn't help anything, it doesn't fix why you're feeling what you're feeling. Humans have emotions and I guarantee you that if he had never ever had that accident, he'd still feel depression at times too. Emotion isn't like the olympics, there are no higher emotions above anyone elses's, you feel those feelings for a reason. It's how you deal with them that matters the most.

Being a Metallica fan since 1982 and I can honestly say that this is the only song that literally kicks your ass in 7 and a half minutes with the progression of it. Metallica = Legends

Problem with metal bands is a lot of them still hold onto old metal cliches. The ones who don't are amazing - Metallica, Tool, Mastodon etc

Are you going to find thought provoking material with songs like look what the cat dragged in, or talk dirty to me? probably not, but they have a following just like each Niche.

Like others have said, there are so many bands that stick to the cliches of Metal. Don’t get me wrong, I love some cliche metal. Dio often sings of swords and sorcery type stuff, and Blind Guardian is all about it.
Then there is the hair metal that’s mostly sexual innuendos. I’m a big hair metal guy.
Today I’m more about progressive metal. This type seems to have more thought provoking lyrics than the typical Demons & Wizards (great band by the way) stuff.
Some of my favorites now are Kamelot, Circus Maximus, Evergrey, Iced Earth, etc. a lot of it is really about the times the music is created and what’s going on in the musicians life at that time. Still one of my all time favorite bands that have done both cliche and poignant lyrics was Savatage. The Oliva bro’s. we’re a once in a lifetime musical team. R.I.P. Criss. 😞
Then there are bands like Megadeth and Metallica that we’re far ahead of their time.

I can tell you as a veteran, that soldiers have indeed been forced to suffer like that. That is why there is the age old custom in the military known as Giving Mercy. Its always been a thing that those who aren't soldiers often find difficult to understand.
There is a special pride that comes with serving your country by knowingly putting your life at risk. When a soldier loses the ability to truly live when they come home its crushing. Its not just physical wounds that do this to soldiers either. Thank all the gods that folks are finally realizing that and trying to help.
I grew up in an era when people still cursed Vietnam Veterans, they cursed my father and uncles because they followed orders. They cursed them because they made it home... They laughed at me and my sister because our dad couldn't stand to walk out our front door. For years he spent all day just sitting in front of the record player listening to album after album of patriotic songs, trying to drown out the hate he came home to. Remember listening to One for the first time and seeing my dad sitting on the floor by the record player, day after day, year after year.

My dad, being a veteran of 4 tours in Vietnam as a Special Forces soldier, endured the same vitriol that yours did. It was not until I was old enough to understand things that I realized what he had come home to over and over again. My utmost respect to your dad as a soldier and his patriotism. My dad came home without wounds, for which I am very thankful for, but he lost a number of friends there.
As for myself, this song (and especially the video) is always very relative and sometimes difficult to watch, as I being a veteran of multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, know some men who came home not like they left. One of my best buddies was KIA in Kandahar Province while we were deployed together.

At some point people realize that the USA is in many ways the evil Empire from Star Wars, and thus people who volunteer to be storm troopers for their mammoth war machine are not really worthy of respect, and saying "I'm just a drone following orders" just doesn't cut it

I personally think it's the worst song on the album but that is a really high standard
One of the things to remember with Metal Music also is that you cannot listen to the song once and understand all the musicality that is happening. There is too much for the brain to process, you have to listen to it multiple times and each time your brain might pick up a new sound. The progression changes, the tempo changes, you need multiple listens to really enjoy the song.

Slanzzy does stuff, I would personally recommend that you react to the studio versions first, then a live version of a band's song if possible.

So I was 15 when this song came out. I had only recently gotten into harder music - rock etc, having grown up on 80s pop (MJ, Prince, Madonna, Cindy Lauper stuff). I fell in love with Sanitarium from their previous album. We didn't have UA-cam or internet easy way to research and I grew up in a small community. I had no idea what Metallica looked like or what it looked like to see that kind of music to be played live. I remember MTV was doing it's "WORLD PREMIERE" it had been advertising of this video at 3PM. As soon as school was out, I rode my bike home faster than I ever had rushed through the door turned on my TV and made it in time to watch their first video ever and get my first ever look at my new favorite band. I remember how my smile and giddy enthusiasm slowly turned to absolute shock and horror and sadness and all sorts of emotions that felt uncomfortable. I was in a daze for the rest of the day and didn't know what to say or think about it but it left a huge impression on me and moved more than any song ever had before. Music videos at that time were usually happy and campy and cute....that video was emotionally scarring. But like this lovely gal said - in a good way cuz it makes you really introspective. About 5 years later after the Black Album was out I remember seeing an interview with (drummer) Lars who said "i love that people just didn't know what to say after seeing that video." That +1! Guilty. To this day I don't think any music video has ever moved me that way. Still one of the greatest epic songs ever recorded.
Your review right there shows what good music is supposed to do. Make you feel and a good band will have loyal fans that cant wait to see what they bring out next like you when you rode your bike straight from school. Personally it is my fav song in the world.

As most of people my age have grown up with this music its nice to see the younger generation stepping out of their comfort zones and experiencing it. i have a 19 and 24 year old and they grew up listening to this music and they love it

If it's views and likes you're after, a reaction to Nightwish is probably one of the safest bets. Pretty much any song from their concert at Wacken 2013 will do. Bumps any reaction channel from a couple of thousands up to the 20-40k range. Yes, it's a completely different style of metal, but well worth listening to. And that's coming from somebody who used to make fun of Nightwish in the early 2000s and never really liked their songs. But I've grown up over the course of the last decades, and their current singer changed my mind pretty quickly.
Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead have rabid fans bases too. All four are outstanding bands,
Love love love Metallica! Their music spoke to me when I was in High school. This song in particular, helped so many veterans deal with PTSD, Anxiety and Depression. It helped to start a conversation for these folks. When I joined the military the meaning deepened for me. After 11 years of service, and spending time with all sorts of people form all sorts of countries and origins I could see how everyone has felt this alone and unheard. Thank you for listening and re-acting to this song! I love that you could see the deeper meaning in the lyrics and feel the emotion of the song.
New to your channel. Love how there's not a bunch of pauses so you can talk about it. A good tool some reactors use is in post-production...you rewatch your reaction and add text/thought bubbles or whatever about what you were thinking/feeling during that part vs just pausing a lot. It's about a soldier who lost his arms, legs, pretty much everything. All he can do is think, this song lyric is what he is thinking and he is asking for help, asking to die.

Rock and metal songs are the best for telling stories, a lot of people think its just screaming and shouting to guitars, but its so much more than that, if they would listen to the lyrics, most tell deep stories that are so much more than hard vocals. Try Master of Puppets by Metallica, but get the lyrics version and really try and understand the song, the music together with the lyrics is a musical piece of genius.
Yes, a lot of metal music has real deep lyrics about life. Most people never really hear the meaning of the lyrics, they just hear screaming lyrics and loud guitars. Listen to "Holy Wars" by Megadeth, and delve into the meaning of the words. Older folks from my generation (my parents/grandparents) only thought that Megadeth/Metallica were only writing lyrics of death and destruction, when really they were trying to spotlight the chaos of death and destruction....the chaos of war, and the lack of compassion in humans. They were not writing about how much fun it was to kill someone.

Have you heard the garage version of this song? All the music and room for the lyrics was there but, he hadn't finished the writing the song yet. There's a lot of nah nah nananah, na na nahhh (in the "hold my breath as I wish for death..." part) they're all really aggressive nah's... it's kinda funny.

I'm a 70's baby. I grew up with Metallica and have met them in person several times. Other songs by Metallica I think you might like would be Of Wolf and Man, For whom the Bell tolls, Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets. They all got me through very rough times. And watch the Cliff Burton Bass Solos. He was the original Bassist for Metallica.

She is imagining life as this deaf, dumb, mute, and blind torso with a brain case attached (don't know that you'd even call it a head at this point), desperately sending out its one lone wish using the only form of communication that remains to it, "kill me kill me kill me kill me kill me kill me".... pretty horrifying if you think about it.
Yea dude when I first heard this song, I felt numb, i have a sense where I could almost feel a situation that somebody else is going through and when I seen the movie that's in the video, fucked me up for sure but definitely an eye opener that today's crybaby generation need...not that it's their fault, they coddled into a technology based world but...I get this feeling when I start imagining that if Warner hurtzof(something like that) did a remake of it, it would definitely be a paradigm shift

You're right when you say it's an emotional message covered in chaos. So very true. I would love to see you do AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. One of my top 5 Metallica songs. (One is my favorite song)
I remember this album when it first came out I was in 6 or 7th grade now im 42 years old brings back memories one of my favorites.
I really enjoyed that reaction. It's very refreshing to see someone who admittedly hasn't heard a lot of metal openly say that she was surprised about the emotional content of the song. What you'll perhaps be even more surprised by, if you keep listening and reacting to this genre and the subgenres around it, is that it can often be more emotional that even mainstream stuff like ballads and the like. A lot (A LOT) of metal is very deep and in many cases, the songs are a way for the singer (and also the other band members) to exorcise demons. The rabbit hole does go pretty deep for some bands and songs (Alice in Chains, Tool, etcetera), so advance warning on that. Just be prepared and go in with eyes, ears, and mind open.
Anyway, liked and subbed and looking forward to the next video.

It is so rewarding watching someone from another generation identify and relate to an important, yet sometimes misunderstood song/video. You have connected to and identified with what we have felt since it was released. Much more amazing, dismissed, underappreciated/misunderstood music ahead...
I'm thoroughly enjoying these reactions...its like getting to hear these songs 20 years later for the first time...I was basically born when master of puppets came out, but didn't get to experience it until high school...changed my world...unreal. Seen them three times and by far the best shows ever.
Metal for me actually calms me down and if I'm going through something it put me at ease and makes me feel better. Everyone is different. I listen to most genre of music and Metallica has always been my favorite. Good for you for opening your mind. Look forward to more videos.
For me it gives me whatever I need at the time. If I need to relax, it will calm me down. If I need focus or energy, it will be given. But I guess that’s how it is for us because we enjoy Metal.

Deeper / more complex Metallica - Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Disposible Hero's. Metallica didnt do music videos for thier older stuff so you may as well hunt down lyric videos so you can comprehend as you go. I'll be watching👍

But the more I scan my brain (regarding what Metallica songs would serve best for a newbie who wants to get teary-eyed), the more I think the post-Burton era has at least *those* couple tunes to start with? Maybe the irony (that the better Metallica era could still be emotionally outdone by some of the slightly later work they did) is a reflection of the boys having just lost Cliff?

keep in mind that justice pretty much had no bass and cranked treble so the guitars do sound more 'aggressive'

this is one of those songs where you need to listen to the studio version with lyrics then the music video. the song is about the movie Johnny Got His Gun where he is drafted for war steps on a land mine and ends up having all his limbs amputated, also loses his sight, hearing and the ability to speak. and on the subject of war, Disposable Heroes by Metallica is another must listen.

Great debut! Highly appreciated, that you didn't interrupt the song, but listened to the end before reacting and gave the musicians their respect. There is never late to discover metal music, specially the deep emotional baggage each song carries, therefore the music is so ''loud/disturbing/complicated''. Make a research on One lyrics, they are based on a book, which James Hatfield (lead vocalist) had read, if I'm not mistake it's called ''Johnny got his gun''. I recommend to react to lyric videos (in order not to distract from the song) or live performances. Other great songs by Metallica are :

I've listened to this hundreds of times. Not sure why, but listening to One this time evoked a lot of visceral emotions in me. It might be the fact that you are listening to it for the first time too. I think everybody at some point has felt loneliness and disconnection from others. I think that is why this resonates with so many people on some level. The music and lyrics touch that desperation within all of us. It helps us realize the importance of friends and family. I have eclectic tastes in music. I love experiencing a wide range of emotions. Comfortable, excited, happy, sad, fun, dark etc. It is human.
I was 7 years old when my mother found me headbanging to this on MTV, Easter Sunday. The family thought it was hilarious but now it takes on a whole new meaning for me because recently my 70+ yo father told the whole family intimate and deeply personal details about his experience in Vietnam. Which up until then was off limits in our family and we wouldn't dare ask him about it.
Even though near 2 decades separate us....it seems as if the tears and pleasure of this song and video were the same betwixt us both. In that I savor that this is a song, preserved, could touch through the current ages. God bless, and I wish you a most excellent life.

Please review Sanitarium... All these songs are in a class of their own, and need to be heard.
If you keep breaking down songs the way you just did, you'll build a strong following pretty quickly (and not just bcuz of your face). Metallica has a plethora of topical tunes, covering war and military, politics, addictions, death, faith, control, depression, the life struggle, literature etc, and Hetfield is certainly an interesting lyricist. There's many songs to recommend regarding the above topics, and an entire month might not be enough to get thru em all. A selected few I'd suggest would be Fade to Black, Master of puppets, Welcome home/Sanitarium, Disposable heroes, The shortest straw, Dyers Eve, Sad but Tru, Unforgiven, Until it sleeps, Hero of the day (S&M version), The fixxer, No leaf clover, All within my hands (acoustic version), Atlas rise, Halo on fire. Some of the songs are quite heavy and fast but that's often a conscious choice to support the story telling. In any case, hope their music will broaden your horizons and take you somewhere unexpected

I would definitely second any song off of Master of Puppets or Ride The Lightening. Not that the other albums are not as deep and thought provoking, but those two are extreme in their exploration of mental and emotional health. Like One off of And Justice For All being about a soldier who returns from war with everything taken from him; Ride The Lightening is about a man facing the electric chair; Fade To Black deals with suicidal thoughts; Welcome Home (Sanitarium) deals with being locked away in a mental institution; Disposable Heroes deals with how soldiers are disposable and replaceable; Master of Puppets deals with addiction, and so on and so on. Very deep in their exploration of the darker side of things and makes you really think about what it would be like to be in someone else's shoes and the consequences of what we as humans do to ourselves and others.
100% agree. I have watched a lot of reaction videos, especially those involving metal bands and your style is excellent. You let the song roll all the way through and gave your take on it at the end. Too many youtubers interrupt the video to interject an opinion which, to me, breaks the thought process and take you out of the moment. Great video. Keep it up! The video clips are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" from 1971. It's about a World War I soldier who's severely wounded. The movie is based off of a book of the same name from the 1930's.
Also the book and I guess movie is what the song was written about. They go hand in hand. Also the is the first "music video" for a metal song that really wasn't a live performance. So people say anyways.

Adam Blakeney I do wish their “selling out” was limited to making videos like this, but still playing Justice type songs. Boy what a shock ‘96 came to be, then in ‘97 or ‘98 whenever reload blessed our presence. The coffin nail for me came with the Napster debacle, until then, I had hoped they could recreate what they were doing before kind of like how Megadeth was able to. Hardwired was close but still had an element or two missing.
Metallica baught the rights to this movie to use it for the video and the song (the day that never comes) might be cool for you to react to I think it's underrated

Metallica is a great band. If you seriously sit down and read James Hetfield's lyrics on most of his songs you will realize how talented the man is without even hearing him play a note. Then when they start playing it makes the lyrics even better. I'm glad you were able to come out of your comfort zone and give this great band a try.
Metallica still helps me to this day with issues and problems I have. It gives me motivation knowing that there are people dealing with bigger issues and coping. It makes me feel like my problems aren't that bad and that I can push through it. If they can, so can I

Think about the fact that this was the late 80's. Not only is this song still heavy, as is the whole album, but no one was saying this stuff in music, not like Metallica did.
Some more Metallica songs: master of puppets, fade to black, blackened, wherever I may roam, creeping death, seek and destroy. If you wanna check out other metal bands, slip knot is a rly fun one. I would recommend starting with duality, psychosocial, sulfur, before I forget, or wait and bleed (my favorite).

@@slanzzy Do yourself a favour and check out Fade to Black live in Moscow 1991. This is Metallica at their peak and the best live version of this song. Crowd was reported to be 1.5 Mil in attendance. One of their most emotional songs.

One video can't adequately describe what they are like because they wear so many hats. They love to mix genres and do different takes on Metal. For example they did a Bollywood Metal song and a Latin Metal song.

Thank you very much ! I love to see younger people taking a look at music from a different point of view than just causal easy litening, hipster, commercial point of view ! I am around my 50s now and music has always been something very deeply emotional for me. The lyrics and their meaning were one the most important things in my teens, twens till now. Just image a whole part of a generation getting sick of that easy listening pop-non-substance billboard chart bulshit people with no feelings for lyrics, meanings and so on, ( as you have experienced with One , surely one of the hardest and deepest songs to get into with ).The majority will not like to be confronted with this, the minority wille be. The result will definately be to get to music which IS off the average, which DOES have a meaning off the popuar topic. What I am trying to tell you, thank you very much to be open minded, I am missing this for about 20 years for the young folk to get interested in things outside the box. Keeping your thinking inside the box is actually damn boring, get out there and explore. That is what you do, which I higly appreciate. As an advice, just do not stop at Metallica, get a wide and diverse impression, go and do some work before just 'enjoying' the music, get the background information. E.g. read a litte before listening to Rage agains the Machine - Killing in the name of... read about Pearl Jam - Jemry, get informed about Tool - Sober, read about Metallica doing Fade to Black, Orion, Nothing else Matters... and endless uncountable stuff there is. I wish you would, I hope you will !
