They really were the Beethoven of heavy metal the first three albums alone sounded like something that Amandus, Bach, Paganini and Tchaikovsky would do if they decided to get together to form a heavy metal band which was amazing considering that before he died Cliff Burton was the oldest member and he died at the age of 24 and Master of Puppets was his last album

Now they couldn't write a song even remotely this good. Too many bandmate swaps and musical directions and styles have killed Metallica for me.

This song is very closely related to the movie _Johnny Got His Gun._ That movie was based on a book of the same name, loosely based on a true story of a Canadian soldier. Anyway, James Hetfield came up with a similar idea in a band meeting one day and his manager suggested he read that book. Metallica ended up buying the rights to the movie and incorporating scenes into the video.

It's really sad to see how Metallica, who were the top of their game here seemed to have faded into obscurity now. So many bad business decisions, the Napster debacle, veering away from their Metal roots have damned near killed Metallica for me. At least I can still listen to Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets.

No...., not really. They were sure ready to quickly find a replacement weren't they.
      Master Of Puppets: 1986
      And Justice For All: 1988
It takes roughly 1-2 years to write and record and album. 6-months to a year was spent finding a Bass player replacement, then teaching him the songs and the business side of the band. So that left not a lot of time to find a bass player. I'd say immediately following the funeral, they began searching for a new bassist and writing and recording the album.

It is indeed from a real movie that is based on a real book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. I have it on my shelf and have read it many times. It was at one time banned by the US government during the Vietnam War.
The book and the movie are about a young, idealistic WW1 American soldier who gets hit by a mortar. He loses his arms, legs, ears, eyes and face. He is kept alive inside an iron lung. The doctors believe he is unconscious, but he is not. He is still very much conscious, but has no way to communicate to the outside world. He struggles in his head with the awful conclusion of his idealogical foolishness, and with various ideas of how he might find a way to communicate. He argues with Jesus, with his father, with his now dead fellow soldiers. Finally he hits upon morse code. His nurse sees him banging the back of his head against his pillow and slowly realizes what he's doing. She answers by tapping her fingers against his chest.
In the end he decides he wants to be taken to Washington to be paraded before the politicians and the people so that they might see with their own eyes the horror their policies and war lust have wrought. The generals tell him no though, and they then leave him alone in the dark with his nurse to rot in some distant, forgotten place where no one else will learn the truth. It's a good book.

I’m really enjoying y’all’s reaction to Metallica. Yes, this song was emotionally driven and I also love that they played for a great cause. It’s not common for a band or artist to create music that touches on the humanities and not just about partying, sex, money, anti government topics. If you want to hear another of their emotionally driven and meaningful songs then try “ Fade To Black”. Very deep and their outro is one of the deepest. IMHO.
