I really liked the 945 for weight and screen size as primary use-case of running. I bought the EPIX2, but I have to say the 945 is my all-time favourite. I wish the EPIX 2 had solar. Garmin manages to give me Goldilocks syndrome 😂. @DesFit you do have the best Garmin reviews.
Your content is always good. I still think the Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar is objectively cooler, but after looking at the features of the 955, may have to get one of those as well...

Thanks for the excellent review Des. After trying out 2 Epix 2's and 2 Ultras I'm going back to a FR955, just dramatically better value. I am more and more put off by Garmin's seemingly random pricing scheme where here in Canada a basic Epix with 16gb, and no multimode GPS is $1169, a sapphire Epix is $1299 with 32gb and multimode, while a FR955 is $629 with Epix Sapphire specs (other than the screen obviously). Let's not even mention the MARQ at $2730 that's just an Epix with a few extra builtin software switches on the motherboard turned ON (and what's with the random $30???!!!). Anyway, great review as always. Cheers
Great review. I’ve been looking at getting the Epix 2 for the OLED coming from an Apple watch. But the 955 seems like a good proposition as its cheaper and lighter. How would rate these two watches from a use case? This watch will be used for Ironman events and something I can wear all the time. Thoughts?
Hi Desfit I have had my 955 a month now. I had my Galaxy Watch 4 classic 46 4g. I have been walking the past few weeks and the stats compared to the smart watch 4 are far different. The 955 is about 10 per cent lower than the galaxy. I did my first swim with the watch and it was amazing. It clocked in 269 kcals burn on 12 lengths (300 Meters). Clearly Garmin is making a run at Whoop. And, I personally prefer the $ model and not having my historical data behind a paywall. Any thoughts on a vid comparing Whoop metrics to the 955’s?
Looking to buy my very first sports watch. It's so overwhelming with the different options...955 vs 945 vs 255 vs Instinct vs other brands. I think I need to stop going down the UA-cam review rabbit hole and just pick this sucker up. Thanks!
You had me at touchscreen! I love my 945 but trying to navigate maps with buttons is maddening! That alone is worth the upgrade for me. Regarding the training status, do you still have to run 2x/wk to get it to produce a status? As a non-runner this is so annoying to me.
Yes, it still needs activities that can estimate VO2 max to produce a proper Training Status, but this can also be achieved with cycling with a power meter.
As a runner that often goes on Hikes on the weekend, how would you recommend this when it comes to hiking or would you just recommend the Fenix 7? Keep up the good work! Thanks :)
Des - Excellent and through review as always, thank you for all of your hard work! Is it fair to suggest that many of the newer training related features are software rather than hardware driven? Put another way, would you anticipate these features available on the Fenix 7 series via a software update? Thanks for your time! - David
Most of these features will be coming to the Fenix 7 and Epix, and some of them to the 945 LTE as well. Although a lot of it is software, these watches also have the 4th gen HR sensor which I’m sure has something to do with supporting the software. Thanks!
great review as always. can you comment on the screen visibility of the 955 Solar vs 945 LTE indoors? i ask this because there was distinct loss of contrast between the Fenix 7 and Fenix 7 Solar/SolarSapphire models. i love the indoor readability of my 945LTE and while i would love to get the extra battery range of the Solar i wouldn't want to sacrifice indoor screen readability. thanks for your thoughts (esp since you have all the different watches in your possession)
I couldn't compare it by myself yet. But DC Rainmaker says in his review that the display and the solar layer between the glass and the display are identical to the F7 series. So, if you see differences in F7 series you should find them in FR955 too imho.
Since Garmin has changed their update cycle from "nobody knows" to "quarterly", it's most likely that we'll see those features in the big Q3 update. Enroll in the beta program if you want to try them out before the official release (note: they are not in beta yet, Garmin is still deploying the latest official release version 8.37).
Des I want to ask: I watched a video of yours about turning your watch into a bike computer. I remember seeing in one of the reviews that the 955 doesn't work with that mount. Is that true?
Great review DesFit! I'm an ultrarunner enthusiast, whose had the FR745 for +/- 2yrs now with no complaints but thinking of upgrading for the new features. However, im caught between the FR955 and the FX7 which seem to have all the same features but the FX7 having better build quality. Am I right in saying that and are there any specific reasons to go for one or the other? Thanks!
amazing review! i was just wondering if you have a perspective from any female runners or triathletes in your life on the size of the watch! i would really love to know what they think!
Thanks, Des! Training Readiness seems to be a better version of Body Battery - what’s the difference between the two and is there any reason to use Body Battery over Training Readiness?
I'm thinking BB is mainly on how rested you are (in the last night sleep) vs. TR which takes into consideration other factors like how your training is going, what intensity and whatnot..
I have a similar dilemma. 3/4 of training is running, 1/4 is cycling. In winter, almost only running. I don't really need super accurate multi-band and 15h more in Fenix sounds good. On the other hand, 99% of us will not really feel any difference in the battery. My main concern is the battery in the cold. In my old FR 735, the battery normally lasts 10 hours of GPS, but in a light frost only 2-3 hours because I always have the watch on my jacket or bicycle handlebars. Which watch will perform better in light frost - F7 or FR 955? PS I would prefer a clearer font on the data screen because I have poor eyesight.
It would be interesting to know how much % of the charge the Solar version gives, for example, in the summer with daily walks on the street for 4-5 hours. Maybe someone has already made a similar comparison?
What about this compared to the Venu 2 Plus? Aside from the maps, I'm interested in seeing all the health stuff compared. If you could only pick one, which would it be? Thanks
Can I Use a Screen Protector With a Garmin Solar Watch? Garmin does not recommend the use of any kind of screen protector, as it will reduce the solar intensity received by the Power Glass lens?
Hi, I'm Italian so it's possible you said it and I missed it😅. What are the main differences with a Fenix 7 (sapphire version) in addition to the material and weight?
Found out what happened - the original information I got a while back had higher pricing, so everyone wins! I went ahead and removed that section. Thanks for pointing that out 👍
Thank you very much for your review of the watch, but I missed a little comparison between 945 and 955. Maybe there are no major significant changes that make one should acquire the watch when one has 945 !?
OK, a question for ya on the HR accuracy. I bought my 955 a few days ago and now I wear it all the time. One issue though, and I want to figure out if it's something I am or am not doing. I got on zwift today and had my polar arm band on, and I didn't have my forerunner active for the exercise, but I do have HR on my watch face at all times. I got up to around 160 bpm on zwift, but when I looked at my watch to see how close it was, it read 111. Anyway, a couple interval sessions just to make sure, and my watch HR barely changed. However, when I went into one of the exercise functions on the watch and started it, it was maybe five to 10 seconds and it jumped to match what it said on Zwift. I did that a few times, and it's the same every time. Any thoughts? An added note: My polar band is connected only to my trainer for zwift. I have yet to pair my watch to anything other than my phone at this point.
Do the settings for your 955 now include a separate "Running" Power Zones section under user defined Power Zones? That would be nice then for working with Stryd. I could then keep that in sync with my Stryd CP, as I will continue to use Stryd rather than Garmin's own. And I'm going to assume, like the 945/Fenix6, this software will of course land on my Fenix 7X.
Do you think a lot of these new software updates/metrics will come to the fenix 7 line? I’m currently getting ready to exchange my 7X for a 7, it’s a little too big for me, and I really like what I’m seeing with the 955.
Is garmin doing away with the LTE service? and Power zones and Native run power. I spoke to Garmin at the Ottawa Marathon and he said Native power for running was in the latest update but on the 945 LTE its still 5.07.
945 LTE came a few months after the release, so probably 955 LTE might join the ranks in a similar fashion. Probable reason could be separate FCC filing for different way of network communications
Hi from Greece... I have the fenix 6x pro which is a unique watch in all its features, the only problem I see when I run is the gps accuracy, on the map it shows me running on the roofs of the houses and the route is not a straight line but a zig zag .... I'm thinking of buying the forerunner 955 new, only for the multi band GPS. or, garmin fenix 7 sapphire solar (used 3 months in the same price as the forerunner 955....550 euro )... Has Garmin finally fixed this bug with the maps? this problem is very serious, is the GPS accurate in this models ? or like 6x pro ? ... what's your opinion is it worth it? or should I stay with the 6x pro...buying the forerunner 955.... or the fenix 7 sapphire solar (used ???) Thank you very much, I appreciate your opinion and I await your advice
Why is there a 1 second lag when going to activity mode? e.g. I wear my watch as normal, when I click the start button there is a 1s lag. This was not present in the 945 LTE and is really frustrating.
The sensors perform similarly, for the most part. However, with the Fenix 7 and 7X, that’s a heavier and larger watch which can lead to the watch bouncing around on your wrist which can throw off the sensor.
Thanks for this amazing review, considering buy one once the 255 music costs about 100 dollars less than the 955 and the 955 is better. Greetings and best wishes from Brazil
Firend. I think my question on the other video didn´t pushed. So I ask here again. Sorry if it is repeated. Which one would you recomend for a normal runner. Forerunner 955 Solar or Venu 2 Plus ? I'm not professional, but I do like to get stats, route and music (running whitout my phonee, only the watch). I'm a Apple Watch user thinking of moving to Garmin. Thanks.
Do you have another UA-cam account under "Aprendendo Astronomia"? This is what I replied to with the other comment which was nearly the same on my Venu 2 Plus video: "The 955 offers a lot more in terms of training and performance feedback vs the Venu 2 Plus. The Venu 2 Plus however offers more smartwatch-type features like the microphone and speaker as well as an AMOLED screen but doesn't come with those feedback features, it also has shorter battery life, and also doesn't come with maps like the 955. In regards to the training and performance feedback, I wouldn't classify those as features just for professionals - likely the opposite actually as it provides all us normal runners with information which can help us become faster or more efficient runners."
I need a professional opinion from a reviewer before making my decision. I’m an engineer in the Air Force, I’m outside all day and do some really messy dirty jobs. I also constantly train on my time off and I feel like I’ve been missing out having never owned a fitness watch. Durability wise I want a fenix 7 however I like the sleekness of the forerunner 955 and some of the things it has which the fenix does not. Do you think I could get away with having a forerunner? Or will my job inevitably end up damaging it far more than if I were to go with a fenix? Thank you for your time and response.
Hi. I have a FR 645, a RD Pod and a Stryd and I noticed that when I use the Connect IQ for the RD Pod, the Stryd data fields get messy and it looses signal several times during an hour. It would be great if someone can test that this doesn't happen anymore because the RD pod now has native power. Thank you
Now that the 965 is out the 955 looks great at $399 or $499 w/solar. Wanted to come back to these reviews to see if it was really that good.

Great Overview. As a 945lte owner can you elaborate on which features will be added that you alluded to in the video? 👍
They shied away from guaranteeing an exact list but I’d say nearly all the big ones 👍
@@DesFit is it only comes for 945 LTE only? What about non LTE? Will it got the same treatment?
@@DesFit Thanks for the reply. I used a WHOOP for a few years and it would be nice to get those features back without the subscription👍
The 945 likely won’t be getting these new features. It has older hardware that may not support some of the new features.
@ Jason definitely!
Yup, most if not all should be coming to the Fenix 7 👍
Des - I ordered the 945LTE on sale for $449 a few days ago so it's returnable. Do you think the 955 (non solar edition) is worth the extra $50?
The 945 LTE will be getting some of the new features via software update so it may more come down to if you want to utilize the LTE capabilities.
Any clue if some of the features announced on the 955 (HRV status, updated sleep, etc) will roll over to the Fenix 7? @desfit
And Fenix 6 Solar…
Fenix 7 yes, Fenix 6 probably not.
Awesome, is the heart rate sensor usable for swimming?
Yup 👍
Is garmin doing away with the LTE service? and Power zones and Native run power. I spoke to Garmin at the Ottawa Marathon and he said Native power for running was in the latest update but on the 945 LTE its still 5.07.
I'm surprised it doesn't have LTE on it... Maybe Garmin ditching LTE going forward?
945 LTE came a few months after the release, so probably 955 LTE might join the ranks in a similar fashion. Probable reason could be separate FCC filing for different way of network communications
i heard there is a problem with watch faces.
Has Garmin finally fixed this bug with the maps? this problem is very serious,
is the GPS accurate in this models ? or like 6x pro ?
... what's your opinion is it worth it? or should I stay with the 6x pro...buying the forerunner 955.... or the fenix 7 sapphire solar (used ???)
Thank you very much, I appreciate your opinion and I await your advice
Hi, Des! Any idea if the HRV Status and Training Readiness will be available for the Fenix 6/Descent MK2?
Probably not. They both use previous generation HR sensors which may not support these featues.
Save a syllable by calling it the nine five five.
Why is there a 1 second lag when going to activity mode? e.g. I wear my watch as normal, when I click the start button there is a 1s lag. This was not present in the 945 LTE and is really frustrating.
how do you add features to the morning report ? i only have sleep - readiness - and HRV - your example in video had other feedback points - thanks -
How does the HR compare to the F7 & 945 LTE? You mentioned it's the same hardware but different design, but does that design really make a difference?
The sensors perform similarly, for the most part. However, with the Fenix 7 and 7X, that’s a heavier and larger watch which can lead to the watch bouncing around on your wrist which can throw off the sensor.
Hi @DesFit would you say the 955 Or the ForRunner 265 ? for prices vs features ?
More features go to the 955, so it all comes down to if you are OK with the 955 MIP display or wanting AMOLED on the 265.
Wow! how can purchasing a Garmin Fenix 7 be justified over the Garmin Forerunner 955? Any Ideas?
Durability and more premium materials
How accurate the heart rate sensor underwater for pool swim?
Suggest me between fenix 6 pro or forerunner 955 please
This is what I replied to with the other comment which was nearly the same on my Venu 2 Plus video:
"The 955 offers a lot more in terms of training and performance feedback vs the Venu 2 Plus.
@@DesFit Ha, thanks. thats why I didn't see. YT change the profile. kk Thanks... it's hard to decide...
Hi, Des: which is better value $ , as my first Garmin, for a rookie runner: Fenix 6x Pro or forerunner 955? Thanks
With the sales that are going on the 6X Pro is a great deal 👍
@@DesFit Thank you! 🏃
955 is available in India??
I need a professional opinion from a reviewer before making my decision.
I’m an engineer in the Air Force, I’m outside all day and do some really messy dirty jobs.
I also constantly train on my time off and I feel like I’ve been missing out having never owned a fitness watch.
Durability wise I want a fenix 7 however I like the sleekness of the forerunner 955 and some of the things it has which the fenix does not.
Do you think I could get away with having a forerunner? Or will my job inevitably end up damaging it far more than if I were to go with a fenix?
Thank you for your time and response.
For the most peace of mind a watch with metal construction and a sapphire lens will probably be your best option.
@@DesFit thank you 🙏
Sure thing 👍 Thank you for your service.
7X sapphire solar vs 955?
Thank you
Does anyone know if adding a screen protector causes an effect on solar charging??
Has anyone figured out how to add media control into the watch . Seems to be missing compared to the other forerunner models .
Do you know if some of those new features will be in Fenix lineup as well? 🤔
Fenix 7 should be getting some (if not most) of these features.
SUP but no surfing? That sucks little bit.
