    It's actually not that surprising that Carrie appeared on QI, she and Stephen were very dear friends. Whenever he was in LA he used to stay with Carrie at her house. Such a great shame we lost her so early, I absolutely adored her, she was so much fun.

    This QI episode was broadcast on 27th December 2014.... Carrie Fisher died 27th December 2016- exactly two years to the day. She was so funny ( as was her mom ).
    Her last UK TV appearance was on 8 Out of 10 Cats, S19E07 which aired on 21st December 2016; she then died on the flight home for Christmas.

    There's a fantastic Christmas song/joke by Alex Horne and his band, The Horne Section, called No-L. You seriously need to check them out - there's a compilation of their appearances on Cats Does Countdown, and an incredible song about peas on The Last Leg. You'd absolutely adore it, mate.

    I've been subscribed to Steve Mould's channel for years. He recently revisited the chain fountain along with another science communication UA-cam channel, ElectroBoom, and the two of them had a long debate, with many demonstrations and experiments, about the actual mechanism of the fountain. Very interesting stuff.

    This is an episode I like to go back to re-watch frequently. As was mentioned before, this turned out to be one of Carrie’s last appearances. She was great and at the time I remember thinking “I hope Stephen has her come back.” She was funny and entertaining and was having fun with everyone.
    One thing that did bother me about the show was Jimmy’s gift. Stephen at first said it was ‘discovered’ in 2013 when a video of it was posted. It’s actually a well known experiment. I had a science teacher who showed us that effect of energy build up and release (or lack of) by doing it in 1982. There is another time when they claimed something was discovered in recent years that actually was known for a long time before any video on it was posted but at the moment I can’t recall what it was. (For that I blame lack of sleep due to my current work schedule)

    • @SaturnusDK
      @SaturnusDK 2 роки тому +1

      I think what Stephen is referring to is that the cause for the effect was proven in 2013 while it was only theorised before then.

    There's a bunch of regulars in the Stephen Fry era of QI that just mesh brilliantly: Bill Bailey, Jimmy Carr, David Mitchel, Phil Jupitus, Sean Lock,... I think Jimmy and Bill, along with Phil Jupitus, are so often recommended because they're a perfect fit with their quick witted humour. They're completely different styles naturally with Bill saying something clever and then do the pipe mine and a wink while Jimmy can sexualise almost anything with a just a few words.

      David Mitchell too. There are other great comedians that can be a bit subdued on QI (e.g. Sean Lock, Johnny Vegas... still good but not the show to bring the best out of them IMHO and with all respect).. Bill Bailey, Jimmy Carr, Phil Jupitus, David Mitchell and some other great wits always seem to thrive on QI and appear regularly so the best episodes often feature them.

    Early public toilets in the UK were coin operated, and cost a penny coin to gain access. This led to the euphemism 'spend a penny', instead of the less polite 'going for a sh*t'

    One of my favourite one-off guest appearances on QI, was by Corey Taylor, the lead singer of Slipknot! It's sounds unlikely but he's very much an Anglophile and a massive fan of QI. In 2013 he stated his goals for 2013. They were, 'quit smoking, get on QI, bring the World to it's knees'. Only 3 years later, the QI elves made one of those wishes come true. :)

    • @BrianC1664
      @BrianC1664 2 роки тому

      Yeah, I remember that episode, and thinking he wasn't likely to be a 'good fit' for QI at the start of that episode, I wrongly assumed (due to the band he was in, and the type of music they played) that he wasn't going to have much of a personality, instead thinking he'd be like a moody teenager and just try too hard to be edgy, but he pretty quickly disabused me of that preconception, he was genuine, funny and wasn't afraid to participate, just generally a good guest.

    Always brings a smile to my face when people from a relatively young country say things like "We live in an old house. It was built in the 1930's". People here in the UK and say to themselves, "old? ... We have houses and buildings still being used that were built in the 1530's..." HHAHA. The house I live in was built in the late 1700s and was converted from a cotton mill into 4 houses. And the outer walls are not modern insulated stuff. It's built of local stone 24 inches thick to keep it warm. All windows and fittings are original and it's illegal to have them replaced with modern ones. No satalite dish could be fitted to any exterior and even the doorbell had to be attached with double sided tape as it is not allowed to be drilled into the old door. That's old. so anyone saying they have a house 100 years old makes me smile.

    You asked about Bill Bailey & Jimmy Carr: they've both done so many episodes (and, in the early going, Bill was doing 4 or 5 episodes a series) that they're both near the top of guest appearances overall, along with Jo Brand and Phill Jupitus. Jimmy only recently had his streak of appearing in every series due to lockdown-related issues, so now Phill's the only one left with that distinction. After Alan, of course, they're the big four for QI.
