If these parts are compatible with your vehicle then this tutorial should be able to help you out even though all steps may not be the same. Your serpentine belt layout should look the same as the video thumbnail. If it does then you are good to go!
2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 Mazda6 Mazda3 CX5 CX9 2.5L engine Serpentine (Drive) Belt and Water Pump Belt Replacement.
Part and process may be different for turbocharged engines in more recent models.
Good job sir . For the small belt you can also just cut the old belt with a knife to remove it
Great detailed video for the DIY guy / gal 👍 but undeniably easiest way to remove belts when replacing especially stretch belts which more common on majority on new modern cars...
is simply to use RazorKnife and cut belts off in 15 seconds
then proper install as very well detailed..
Happy wrenching 🔧
Thank you! my dealership offered to do this exact service for $562 USD on my CX-5. Lifesaver!
They are morons
Your video really helped me. I have 130,000 km on my 2015 Mazda CX-5 and the Serpentine belt blew, I had it replaced 4 years ago and decided to do it myself this time. I also replaced the waterpump belt because its getting up there in years and could go any day so i figured while I have everything pulled apart get it done .
was it hard, I'm stressed lol the Mazda dealer wants 300$ omg.. I'm thinking of letting someone else do it.. they seem to know... I just don't want it to be routed wrong....
Much respect for the cloth trick on the water pump belt. The lisle tensioner tool didn't fit the pulley. That trick saved the day
'16 CX-9
Watched both your videos, I have the hatchback, However looks like your sedan has more room to get to get in there , overall this was a super helpful video, saved me over $600.
For anyone else doing this get a double box 17mm long wrench or a short cheater bar to get leverage that Auto tensioner takes some force to compress.
This is how you do the belts the easiest way for sure, nicely done. I have one small hint to add, when I did the belts on my Mazda 3 2.5 the streach on belt for the water pump would always walk its way over to the outer crank pully when you walked it on the pump. I found I had to then use the same technique of turning the crank pully with a wrench and walk it back on the rear pully on the crank after the fact. Hope this hint helps someone.
Nicely done, man.
With your help, I changed mine with ease. You’re right, taking the plastic out of the wheel wells was the most time consuming part of the whole process.
Just an FYI. Your lug wrench fits that crank bolt perfectly too.👍🏾👍🏾
Good video, for seasoned mechanics or 1st timers. Gave me the outline and btw, that rag trick is a new one for me, I always used a screwdriver. There was no room for that, so rag it is. Thumbs up
Thanks for saving my vacation
This helped me tremendously, thank you for taking the time to make it and post it.
Thank you very much. The first couple video's that I watch involved taking all the plastic off of the bottom, removing the RH engine mount and jacking up the engine. I was done in an hour and a half. Thanks again!
Thank you will be doing it on my 2015 Mazda 6 with 100k miles.
Super helpful video. Great pacing and video angles helped a lot. Nicely done. Thank you!
Logged in just so I can say Thanks for making the video!
Thank you for making this video! I just replaced the belts on mine and it couldn't have gone better!😄
Good video. I wonder how Mazda and manufacturers make it so difficult to get to the tensioner. The enginer/frame/engine cross members leave little room. Also, getting water pump belt on was diffcult for me, I am ok with tools and cars but darn I had to get a friend to help me, I needed one more hand as I only have two. Putting the serp back on was a PITA....But I got it, and your video was consulted several times in the process. To that thank you.
Exactly what I needed man! I love you for this! 👑👑😤😤
If you are swapping the water pump belt, remember to put the car in NEUTRAL (from the button under the gear shifter) and only turn CRANKSHAFT CLOCKWISE! Turning counter-clockwise can cause timing issues. I'm not sure if these were mentioned or emphasized in the video.
I found my crank turned just fine with the transmission in Park. No need to put in N....
Thanks, this was a BIG help
appreciate the video and diagram. helped me changed mine
Very helpful video! Thank you for posting!
Thank you so much men good video 👍 very helpful
Great video .... worked like a charm
Good job and information .Thank you .
Very informative, thank you!
Good job! Thanks!
🔥🔥🔥 thanks for the help!!
Great video! Excellent lighting too! Can you not just cut off the water pump belt? I think I’m gonna order a stretch belt tool to just have but was just curious.
Never mind I saw you responded to another similar comment. Thanks again. Excellent tutorial.
Great video
This video is helpful. Thank you for your recording that video. Is it possible to see how to check the circuit A sensor fuel level in CX-9 2008?
Any reason you went from a 13/16 socket when you took off the water pump belt, to a 21mm wrench when you put the belt back on?
Nicely done! I'm just curious about the tires you have, is that possible to have 235/45/R19 on this car?
The old belts you can just cut it to make work more easy in short time
True story. But it’s pretty easy to pull them off too. Wanted to show how to pull it off in case someone was looking to reuse. Like if they have to replace the water pump itself and not the belt.
AutoZone has sold me the wrong parts 3 times in a row I wouldn't cut it Incase they sold wrong part
Can you make a video of replacing the water pump please on your 2.5L Skyactiv engine?
I would love to, but my water pump doesn’t need to be replaced at this point. For this vehicle it would honestly be a matter of removing that belt, draining all the coolant out through the petcock, removing the bolts from the water pump, making sure the mating surfaces are clean, adding the new water pump, refilling the coolant, and replacing the belts. As I have other things that need to be fixed on my vehicle I will post new videos.
So to take the water pump belt off, the crank pulley needs to be rotated clockwise, never counterclockwise?
Yeah, you can rotate it clockwise to remove it. Or you can just cut it if you don’t need it.
Great
100 god job
Thank you for an excellent video. Do you know if a 2014 Mazda 5 sport will be the same ?
While some of the concepts may be the same, it's a different part and a different set up. Here is the belt that you need: amzn.to/3lg375S. It’s just one belt instead of two. I believe this is the diagram for your vehicle: www.fixya.com/uploads/images/blew-serpentine-belt-dont-diagram-ghdahqg2ajax420sfccgbpmc-2-0.gif If you can find a video that fits that diagram it may be of more help. With all these Mazdas you will likely still need to go in through the wheel well.
Thank you very much for a very prompt reply. I really appreciate it.
Good afternoon, I want to congratulate you on your excellent video, a consultation after installing the two belts, how it is synchronized or how many turns must be made to the main pulley so as not to lose the synchronization of the engine, thank you in advance ..
These are accessory belts - NOT a timing belt. No sync with engine required.
Why didn’t you show how you got the belt on at last using the pulley tensioner*?
Huge mistake. I definitely should have.
Hello, question.. When turning the crankcase pulley do you leave the car tranny in Park or do you need to put it in Nuetral? thanks
i am stuck on the water belt part :/
I also have a floor jack. Where did you jack the car from?
The place you placed the jack stand protrudes outward so you can use the OEM jack stand. So, how did u floor the car from there using a normal floor jack?
If you can slide it far enough there is a center spot. I don’t think mine fits there very well. On this car I usually jack it from the side point right next to where I place the jack stand. That’s what it shows to do in the owners manual.
@@homemechanics3349 Thanks for the reply!
Unfortunately, my floor jack is not long enough to reach the center spot. what do exactly mean by side point? As there are only grooves for the OEM jacks. Where did you put the floor jacks exactly.
Thanks in advance!
Check this link for where the jack points are on the Mazda 6. You can still place jack stands in the same place where your oem jack would go. www.mazda6info.net/jacking_positions_vehicle_lift_2_supports_safety_stands_rigid_rack_positions-525.html
Where it says vehicle lift supports you can lift from that point and slide your jack stand in there.
@@homemechanics3349 So you used the floor jack on the "vehicle lift" points? Is it not bad? Because these side lift points are meant only for an OEM jack not a floor jack.
Amigo sirve el tutorial para un Mazda cx 3?
Creo que el proceso es lo mismo pero las piezas son diferentes. Estas son las piezas: amzn.to/3jxP75H

Why has the original belt failed so early?
My belt hadn’t failed, but I saw some cracking in it. It’s preventative maintenance.
@@homemechanics3349 thanks. I just bought the latest Mazda 6 2.5 turbo. I was surprised your belts were replaced so soon. I did preventative maintenance on my wife's toyota echo by replacing the drive belts and they were changed after 22 years of driving. The belts hadn't failed they were just old and showed some cracking.
@lesmotley6839 Part of it is paranoia because I’ve had a belt break on the road and it’s the worst.
@@homemechanics3349 I get it👍
Does this work for a 2010 Mazda CX-9?
I don’t think so. I believe you have the V6 3.7 engine and this is the V4 2.5. It wouldn’t be the same belt set up.
When you take the water pump belt off the nut on the pully does it come loose when turning clock wise?
I did mine counter clockwise. If you can move it clockwise then you would just have to separate at the bottom instead of the top.
@@homemechanics3349 great video, thank you very much. I did this job for a client with mazda genuine parts. He is super happy with the result. Greetings from Mexico.
Excelente! Donde vives en Mexico? Viví en Torreón hace quince años
@@homemechanics3349 vivo en Guadalajara. :)
Since you are replacing the water pump belt; an easier way to get the old one off would be to cut it. Just sayin. Work Smarter, Not Harder.
Yep. For this job you’re not wrong. For others they may want to know how to remove it so they can use the same belt to put back on if they are replacing their water pump.
@@homemechanics3349 I noticed a previous comment stating the same. Sorry I didn't read them all before I iterated. Thanks for the video though as I was thinking of tackling this job from the top instead. Your way is better of course.
Hi, How long does this take to do?
I’ve done serpentine belts about 20 times and I would say this one took about 2-2.5 hours for this type with common hand tools. Other serpentine belts can take about 15-20 minutes. It’s all about how easy it is to access. This one is about as time consuming as they come.
@@homemechanics3349 thanks! thumbs up on your video. Thanks for taking the time to post it.
For a Cx5 it's a 20 min job with right belt size. I order a Gates belt and was way to tight...could lead to pulley issues if used...ordered a OEM slip belt was so easy 1 min to get on by hand. Also CX5 no tire to remove just turn wheel far right....there is plenty of room if you drive up on a thick board for a little extra space and are medium build. I just cut the belt off also... taking off is a pain. Good video.
Mark G good to know. Was yours the same belt design as this with the two different belts (water pump belt and drive belt)?
@@homemechanics3349 Yea two belts 2014 2.5 Cx5.
Cx5 is from 2012 to 2016 that are the same not 2017+
Really just depends on if you have the standard 2.5L engine. It’s actually still an option up through 2021 on the CX-5. If you have the turbocharged 2.5L or the 2.2L turbocharged then it is different.
just cut old water pump belt off
You definitely can. Some people might want to save it if they are replacing the water pump.
Stupid design for the water pump
