- Does coffee break a fast when you're practising intermittent fasting?
"Can You Drink Coffee While Intermittent Fasting?" is definitely one of the questions I get asked most frequently regarding this topic. So I made this video to clear things up!
In this video, I'm going to be answering the following questions:-
☕️Is it ok to drink black coffee when fasting?
☕️Is it ok to drink coffee with milk when fasting?
☕️Is it ok to drink coffee with cream when fasting?
☕️I also look at whether it's ok to drink anything as long as it's under 50 calories... which is a common myth I see all over the place!
☕️ Finally, I talk about some of the benefits of drinking coffee while fasting!

I have wondered this! I have been doing intermittent fasting for a couple years now. I quit drinking coffee/caffeine to see how hard it would be to quit something I was relying on. Turns out, it wasn’t that hard and it gave me to courage to quit chewing tobacco. It’s been almost a year since I quit both. Great information!
My fasting blood sugar is always high even I am on intermittent fasting for three months. For an example, I ate yesterday evening at 5 pm, one cup of veg and two small pieces of fish. I was pretty full. This morning my fasting blood sugar is 134 at 6 am, then 144 at 10 am and now at 12 noon is 153 I haven't ate a anything except water. It is happening each and every day for almost last three months. WHY?
J Chase W Good for you!
runuapa yusuf How long between meals are you taking blood glucose readings?
runuapa yusuf You may need to experiment with extended fasting. Those readings are high..for fasted glucose .
Just think the money you have saved and going to save down the road! Including dentists fees and oral surgeons' fees!
When I started doing fast I only drank it black, (first thing in the morning) then I started putting a teaspoon of cinnamon and a couple of teaspoons of coconut oil, and I found it more efficient on making me feel less hungry. (I’m initially doing 16/8, skipping breakfast) sorry my english, it’s not my native tongue. Thanks.
That's better than my Espanol.
Thank you for the advice. I'll try cinnamon in my coffee.
Your English is terrific 😀 from Chicago with love
doesnt matter with ur english , it more important with what you sharing for the the good , my english not good ,
I know cinnamon lowers sugar levels but coconut oil is fat.
I drink it black. As my soul.Thank you for this video!
Ok, Ninja
😂
You are do funny
Lol. Same here. Try sprinkling some Himalayan salt into your black coffee. Smoothes out the acids. and get your electrolytes ;)
Omg 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂
As a white coffee/latte addict, here's my lifehack:
I take a tablespoon of double cream and mix & whisk it with cold water so it ends up with milk ish consistency and I use this instead of regular milk!
You can also mix the cream with regular milk to get about the same results and much tastier.
But then you have the carbs from the milk
Excellent little clip Dr Dan - I drink tea with a tiny splash of milk during my fasts and often wonder if I'm breaking the fast - so this is great to know and to confirm that am doing the right thing after all.....!. Many thanks ;-)
Have always had Black coffee. Just found your channel, so glad I did.
Excellent! Thank you so much. This is the best video thus far that I have watched and to the point. Let my fasting journey begin. 🥰☕️
Great video and wonderful information. Thank you.
I’m new to Keto and consciously fasting - my ground rules - no eating after 8pm - no eating before noon - I have a black coffee in the morning and a coffee with heavy cream at noon as a treat. I find I am happy with one Keto conscious meal at around six pm and I have no cravings to snack. The biggest benefit for myself has been that I have not had a single headache or migraine since I started - about 2 weeks ago - this has been literally life changing for me as I generally suffered headaches daily and migraines weekly - I am interested whether this is connected to the origins of Keto and fasting among epilepsy patients? - I have of course lost weight but I wasn’t particularly overweight to begin with. I just feel great now. Thank you Dan thanks Keto and thanks intermittent fasting 😃👌
Thank you soooo much … nothing before noon nothing after 8 pm
Allow me to quote a famous poet: "I like my sugar with coffee and cream."
Isn’t that a Beastie Boys lyric?
@@DrDanMaggs Yes sir. Intergalactic, planetary! They certainly count as famous poets. ;-)
Gotta keep it going
Keep it going full steam

Thanks again, Dr. Dan. Your videos are great!
The best site on these topics on the internet in my opinion
I have recently given up sugar. Soo hard to swap to black coffee, but it is what it is. It is awesome, and weight loss is quick without sugar and high carbs. It really works.
Stevia monk fruit??
@@sherrymiller8167 stevia occurs for me as “ late to the party” the drink is bitter, then stevia shows up and I have a mouthful of sweet, but the bitter i needed it for is past! Lololol. Monkfruit sugar, nice replacement in cook8ng.
2-3 large mugs of strong coffee every morning each with a tablespoon of heavy cream. No sugar.
Just came across your channel, finding it very educational...thanks for sharing! Black Tea and Coffee. Hot Chocolate in winter with minimal milk. Never have sugar in anything.
Awesome content Dr Dan!
I started with a daily 18 hour fast a few months ago. I just very recently started drinking black coffee in the morning and it absolutely helps key some of the hunger at bay til I eat in the afternoon. Not completely but it does help.
Thank you. I usually have coffee with semi-skimmed milk. No one has ever successfully recorded how many mugs I drink per day.
I am a huge coffee snob. Take my coffee black and no sugar. But because of the way i make my coffee there is no bitterness so no need for milk or sugar. There are 4 reasons why coffee becomes bitter and you can avoid them all.
1. If you burn coffee by using boiling water - so make sure the water is 92-94 degrees C and not more
2. If you leave the coffee grinds in hot water for too long - should be not more than about 2 minutes
3. If the pressure of the water is great (this is what happens when you make espresso which is why espresso is bitter but then sometimes that just hits the spot!) i brew my coffee.
4. The quality of the coffee - coffee beans ripen all at different times. (Not like an apple tree where the apples ripen all together). With Cheap coffee they harvest all the coffee together and include the unripe beans which makes the coffee bitter. The expensive coffees are higher priced because a human separates the ripe beans. I get Ethiopian beans 😍
I was also very pleasantly surprised to discover that adding salt helps to cut the bitter taste!
Great explanation! I drink 3-4 cups a day, I love coffee. I drink it as hot and strong as I can, sweetened with stevia, and with a tablespoon of coconut oil, heavy whipping cream, butter or ghee. I use one of those whizzer thingys to emulsify the fat into the coffee. I don’t care at all for flavored coffee, except on occasion I’ll add a tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder and increase stevia.
Sneakily breaking your fasting!
Thank for the tip about stevia.
Stevia is so much worse then regular sugar in the long run.
4 cups a day not good for your heart, g
@@tyam5543 Why? I don't use it. I prefer Swerve which is erythritol, but am curious as to what's bad with stevia (other than the taste)?
I like to take my coffee black and bitter “Amarican style” 😊
By the way I like your video and your style in presenting the information go ahead my dictor 👍
Thanks for clearing that up. I was never going to give up my morning coffee regardless, all I did was switch to black espresso, took me a day to get used to it 😎
I drink it black,no sugar. Thanks for shading some light on this subject.
I read a book about intermittent fasting while I reached a plateau where I was not loosing weight , the book said that only black coffee is allowed during int. Fasting :( . So I stopped putting milk at all and I clearly saw the difference on my weight.
I live in Colombia and buy organic gourmet coffee for about $5/Lb. I rarely enjoy black coffee, a splash of milk turns it into a heavenly drink for me. Thanks for clarifying the issue.
hazelnut milk, elmhurst makes one with just 2 ingredients: hazelnuts and filtered water, it is so lovely in iced coffee, just a splash is fine
Thank you for the information.
i stop my intermitent fast years ago,
now im trying to start again, and its my 1st week 😊
Black coffee really supresses my appetite. Apple cider vinegar in water (which has no calories) also supresses my appetite as well!
Switch the water for Club Soda. Not seltzer. Club soda. 10 x better
I tbs heavy whipping cream, 1/2 TBS grass fed butter and sea salt. added to 1 kcup (12oz) coffee. YUM!!
Ooo might try that!
You’re breaking your fast doing that, but okay go on.
nice job, thanks for the vid.
I make pour-over freshly ground dark roast coffee ☕️ with 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon - sometimes ground cardamom. The first cup I have, if breaking a fast, is with 1T MCT oil and 1 scoop of collagen peptides, frothed. If I have any further cups, they’re black, no sugar.
This is so helpful; thank you for sharing!! I just adore bulletproof coffee (with butter)!!!
That is not good during fasting, because much more than 50 calories.
@@Infiniteeternal1 Thank you so much for sharing!! This tip is very helpful to me!!!
I take coffee with a rounded spoonful of *monk fruit* (with erythritol) and enough *heavy creme* to make it light brown. Sometimes I had a slice of *butter.*
Why the fuck would you add butter on coffee
I add monk fruit and coconut creme. Delish
Good explaining
Hey, Dr. Maggs. Thanks for your videos! I like how clear, informative and succinct they are.
I'm two weeks into my keto plunge and things are going well enough. Kind of stuck on 200 lbs for quite a few days, but following your advice on not being obsessed by weight alone, echoed by others. I have a question that's related to the food labels and discussion regarding how dietary fiber is considered to slow digestion (and I guess absorption) of whatever level of carbs we ingest, to the point that we can subtract fiber content from carb content to get net carbs. All right, this is all great to know. But this makes me wonder: If I know that I've strayed a bit and consumed more carbs than I should once in a while, can I take a fiber supplement at the time or soon after to keep me from likely being knocked out of ketosis? Seems like it can't hurt, anyway.
Thanks again for your wisdom.
I have one cup of coffee in the morning with a teaspoon of heavy cream. For many years I used one teaspoon of sugar with half & half, but I was able to give up the sugar about three months ago and haven't missed it at all. After coffee I take my morning walk and then have breakfast around 11 or 12.
I found it takes three days to adjust to coffee and tea without sugar. Suddenly it tastes normal and if you then add sugar it tastes weird.
I am a black coffee loving Londoner who's been on an OMAD diet since Jan 1st. I stumbled across your channel by accident, and am very pleased that I did. It shouldn't matter I know, but nonetheless I find it oddly reassuring to hear an English accent as opposed to the American centric content that's so prevalent on UA-cam. You have a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Byron! 🇬🇧
great vid dude! What about mct oil in the coffee?
Thanks for clearing that up for me 👍🏻
Yes! It raises cortisol levels..which spike insulin.. if you must have coffee..wait a good 3-4 days into a strictly water fast. The spikes if any will be so low, it won’t leave you in a catabolic state ( muscle eating).
Coffee with collagen peptides and cream
Black coffee with no sugar is my favorite, I've accidentally trained for this day my whole life lmao.
Well now u developed a tolerance so yes and no xD (dont take this seriously)
Coffee does takes hunger away from me. Great video !!!!
Just started IF, searched for ever about adding stuff to your coffee, saw the 50 calorie thing so I added 1- stevia and sugar free powder creamer.. then came across this video 😩 hope it doesn’t kick me out of my fast!
I’m planning to start 16:8 tomorrow! I love a cup of black coffee and love a double cappuccino 💕 Guess it’ll be coming black for a while!
20 ounces coffee with 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream.
thats not fasting lol
He said to mention down below how you like your coffee.. she wasn’t giving a suggestion for how to drink your coffee while fasting.
I use heavy cream or unsweetened almond/coconut milk creamers in my coffee. I’ve done the blood sugar test and cream, butter, and unsweetened nut or coconut milks won’t raise my blood sugar. However, unsweetened oat milk “broke” my fast as well as half and half. So if you have a blood sugar monitor you can test if something in your coffee breaks your fast if your blood sugar rises even 30 mins to an hour after. Your blood sugar should lower and ketones go up while fasting.
That is so helpful, thank you Dr Maggs. I like to have my coffee as a barista made flat white on almond milk. I find this can abate my hunger for hours but I've always wondered if it broke the overnight fast.
Coffee may not be an appetite suppressant but the cream in it certainly is! 😊
I like hand poured semi-decaffeinated drip coffee with 1 tablespoon of heavy cream and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Sound good
I am loving all this content, it sure is a new learning curve for eating. Can I ask how you measure your ketosis? There seems to be plenty of recommended products in the US but as always we seem to be a little bit behind.
Any suggestions/recommendations?
Could this be one of your next videos?
Hi Richard. I’ve got a playlist and several videos on this topic
@@DrDanMaggs just found them :)
Thank you this was helpful
whipping cream is great in coffee, with stevia on my 7 Day fast.I do my one cup of coffee upon awaking.
I'd rather go with aspartame, can't stand the taste of stevia
@@CripplingDuality aspartam causes cancer, stevia is a natural sweetener, a plant. Just use less...
I'm suffering from degenerative disc disease and considering trying long term (5-7 day) fasting.. I'm curious why you're doing long-er term fasting
2 tablespoon of healthy cream and 2 teaspoons of monk fruit sweetener
I have one black coffee with honey in the morning then it's green tea & black tea after that. Thank you for a great interesting video.
I use cacao powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and recently started using a small amount of butter.
I like my high end coffee beans fresh and free from a UA-cam channel creators as a give away for the great support. I'll supply the labor of hand grinding and the MCT oil.
Actually having coffee keeps you in a stressed state and when you are in a stressed state your body will not access your fat stores because it is in fight and flight mode. When cortisol is in the bloodstream it's naturally a blocker. So instead of obsessing that it's accessing immediate quick energy glucose it also triggers the brain to release ghrelin which makes you hungry and makes you want to eat more. I.e. quick energy stores.
I remember I was depressed but I was eating sooo much but losing weight at a terrific speed ... How was that? I am just asking? Stress makes me lose weight even with normal eating and snacking

Black with 1/4 teaspoon of stevia when fasting or a cappuccino made with coconut milk When not fasting, Yum!
I like coffee with a little cream or half and half. Black is ok, but not as good 😁 I usually drink mine with cream while intermittent fasting, but only black while fasting for autophagy
I have unsweetened vanilla almond milk in my coffee. Black coffee gives me heartburn.
Drink first (in the morning) a glas of wather with 1 tbs ACV+ lemon juice and after one hour a cup of coffee.
Black no sugar .... The best (I drink LOADS)
I am changing from the way I used to like my coffee. I used to like lots of cream or milk or half and half...with no sugar or sweetener. My first preference was heavy cream, my second preference was half and half, and my third preference was milk. But, I used milk the most often, because it was the most affordable. But about 2 to 4 months ago, I stopped buying milk because it finally dawned on me that drinking so much milk...mostly in my coffee, was the reason I was unable to lose weight even though I had already given up bread, pasta, potatoes, sugar, cereals and grains...and so on. I bought some dehydrated heavy cream powder to put in my coffee, and occasional other uses, and that didn't interfere with losing weight. But, then I ran our and I'm not going to be able to replace it for at least another month. So, after I ran out of cream powder, I started drinking it black with a little allulose in it...two scoops for the whole pot. I am getting used to the black coffee, and starting to actually like it that way.
I cup of coffee with 1 scoop of mct oil powder, 1 packet Stevia in the Raw, and 1 tsp of cream. Yum
I like my coffee dark with nothing in it! ❤️❤️❤️ Without sugar either
While I'm fasting, I have black coffee. Otherwise, I like to add a splash of cream.
I like a cold brew with cream. Sometimes It can be a little too much heavy cream or half-and-half I'm sure but, it does have zero carbs. Hot coffee, I like blended with a really good organic butter or ghee, with a little bit of 0 carb organic dark cocoa unsweetened with a little bit of liquid stevia to offset the bitterness of the coco.
Excellent video 👍
Thanks Cliff!
I’ve always had an odd eating schedule. I’m not on a diet, and I’m pretty sure I’m not intermittent fasting.
What I do is I have two cups of black coffee in the morning and then I’ll have one meal in the evening, about 3 hours before I go to bed. I never eat snacks, sweets, or drink anything besides coffee and water. Am I eating wrong? 🤔 I’ve been the same weight ever since high school so I never really worried.
Pretty close to 23:1 fasting. You eat one meal at the same time every night and only drink water the rest of the time so technically you are fasting!
I have my coffee with cream! Makes fasting easy for me!
So let me tell you a fact!! When you drink coffee your not fasting! Why? Because caffeine is a xenobiotic, it’s something that has to be metabolized by liver enzymes, your gut processes it!! Anything other then water will break your fast.
@@Kaykay-yl2mi I'm not sure how true your conclusion is. I have seen a few sources claiming the xenobiotic effects of coffee, but there isn't alot of evidence on the extent of this.
It seems that whilst you may be right, that coffee does illicit some metabolic reaction, it may have negligible effects on fasting (so whilst it might be optimum to just have water, having coffee/tea seem to not affect it much at all, so I would suggest having the BLACK coffee/tea is fine).
@@Kaykay-yl2mi you're not wrong but you're not right. The truth is that scientists debate whether or not black coffee breaks a fast. Some scientists believe what you just said to be true.
Thank you so helpful
love your videos and loooove coffee. What about plant based milks?
Thank you!!! I needed this understanding. Before beginning my Keto lifestyle change I used to have cream and coffee with my sugar, literally. I was totally ignorant to the effects of sugar on the body. Now I just have cream.😁
Is coffee with powdered creamer it says it has no carbs 10 calories Per teaspoon. Talkin about Coffee-Mate.
Thanks so much for this. I watch as I fast and drink my coffee with 1 TBS of vanilla nut pod creamer (10 cals, zero carb/sugars) just enough to take the bitter edge off. Normally though, I will drink it with 2 TBS HWC and stevia.
How about black coffee with heavy cream and a little teeny bit of Swerve? Because that's how I love mine. Or almond milk? Great video! I'm currently doing 15:8 or 16:8 depending on my schedule and I and a few other people I follow have been able to have a steady weight loss even with a tiny amount of cream and sweeteners.
That's exactly how I like to have my coffee :)
what about artificial sweeteners like Stevia or Splenda?
How about sugar free non-dairy creamers, less than 1 carb per serving?? Are they ok??
I also wa t to know , no response 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤷♀️
Love watching your informative videos @Dr Dan Maggs. I am drinking Decaf Latte with Almond Milk during fasting. Just the one a day when starting work in the morning and lasts me til lunchtime for when breaking Fast. Is this version of coffee OK in your eyes for fasting and weight loss??
I really don’t think lattes are alright. I believe that would break your fast 😯
Great insights here; thanks. I love a mocha though lol
I like my coffee like I like my metal music. Black! 🤘
Black like my soul

Does adding butter or coconut oil to coffee in the morning interferes with intermittent fasting?
why the heck do you want butter in coffee ahhhhh
My question also . Thats my morning ☕
I want to know also! I scrolled down through the comments until I found somebody asking about the butter in the coffee.☕️... I want to know if adding the butter to my coffee breaks my fast? I add about a teaspoon of kerry gold butter. This helps me get my fat and it makes my coffee richer which, helped me to give up the Creamer completely! I'm steadily losing weight daily so, I think maybe it does not but, would love some input! Thanks!!! 🤎👍🏻
He's right, I am a sugar addict but started drinking black coffee and you quickly get used to it.
For my part - I gave up sugar in my coffee a number of years ago - will I give up cream in my coffee? NOT A CHANCE. I will continue to 'Fast' - but perhaps to the degraded part of having cream in my coffee (One coffee per day). Great seing the tips and other information in here. A nice community here.
I like to put a small amount of butter in mine sometimes.
What's it taste like?
Joe Russo great idea if you aren’t fasting!
caffein in triggering cortisol ! why didn’t mention that ?!
Then insulin
I used to add a fair dollop of chocolate milk to my coffee...not sure of the calories, but probably too much...and a Splenda packet too. I cut back on the chocolate milk and sweetener, but found that black coffee was more palatable than not enough of the other. Also, I find that the taste black coffee leaves in my mouth tends to suppress the kind of 'mouth hunger' cravings you get from boredom.
Black coffee with nowt in it all the way - although occasionally have been known to have coconut oil in it (not as part of a fast though)
I liike coffee mate in my coffee
I love black coffe with cinnamon. 😋❤️
Me too
I fix my bulletproof with a little half & half, a pat of Kerry Gold butter, and about a tblsp of organic unrefined coconut oil. Good to go til my first meal around 2 or 3pm.
I use sugar-free non-dairy creamer...flavored as either hazelnut or French vanilla. Seems to work just fine.
I'm not sure if you're trying to stay away from sugars but I bought a sugar free creamer recently and decided to read the ingredients and it had listed "corn syrup" which is basically sugar..... I was so mad when I read the ingredients even though the nutritional facts says no sugar.
I like my coffee with a little bit of honey, less than a spoon
Coffee, causes me to lose sleep for a day or two!
I like it black with half teaspoon of sugar would like to try cream instead I’ll do the math(s) keep up the good work
Thanks! I have been trying to get into black coffee but I just find it a little too bitter to really enjoy, so if I can go back to my long black with a very small splash, perhaps 15ml, of whole fat milk, I will be a very happy person! Yay!
Try a pinch (or more) of salt in your black coffee. Cuts bitterness and adds valuable electrolytes
