You've provided the best video/lesson on this song. This is one that I remember playing on air guitar in front of the mirror when I was kid to the 45 dreaming of being a rock-star. To be actually playing it now some 35 years later because of you is too cool to express. Thank you brother.
+Andrew Winford hello Andrew - thanks so much for checking this out and the kind post is sincerely appreciated! Just saw these guys a few weeks ago and this tune sounds as good as ever - keep rockin! your friend, dale
Been a few years since anyone has commented...holy crap. Thanks! I love this song, and love my Taylor. I was missing a few minor parts but you clarified them. Such a fun song. I try to only play fun songs.
there are so many appreciative posts here, but I wanted to pile on the positively bandwagon and say that I have been playing guitar semi-professionally for more than 30 years, and you helped me figure out one of my favorite tunes of all time! I'm going to attempt this with my 3 pc acoustic trio. just wanted to say thanks!
Thank you so much for all the time and energy you must have invested into the production of this outstanding and accurate tutorial. I absolutely love Tommy's performance of this song with Cleveland's Contemporary Youth Orchestra, and you nailed it perfectly. Great job!!!
I see this tutorial has been out quite a while, but I simply can't help but say thank you! Thank you so VERY much for this. I watched Tommy do this on a 12-string and couldn't help but wish I could play it someday. You make that Collings absolutely sing. You're one of the very best instructors on the internet. Clear, concise, enjoyable, and any other superlative you can think of! Pretty amazing to think that the videos you make will be viewable for years and years. As a side note, you have the peace of Christ on your face. You can't fool me. :) Bless you, brother.
Dude, you are the man!...I've learned many songs from you but don't know why it took me so long to find this lesson for a song I've been wanting to learn since the 80s...thanks!
Hello. I am getting it. I just have to watch it several times. Thank you again. I have been wanting to learn this tune since the album first came out when I was in Jr. High school. I just started to learn to play about 4 years ago and will continue to do so as long as I am able (I am 50). I need to start studying music theory and get my ear trained so I can learn songs by listing to the CD. Thanks for using your time to show these instruction videos. Take care. P.S. I spoke to soon in my earlier post.
great to hear you are playing and enjoying it! I wish you the best and please know i'll help in any way i can. I'm 52 and enjoy it more than ever and i know you will. Keep on..your friend, dale.
5 months ago I started playing guitar and thought I'd never be able to play this song. Last week I took another crack at it and I can play most of it, although slower but I'm getting better. I just need to get my fingers used to barring the 3rd fret of the E and B strings. Right now I'm using my index and middle fingers and I think it's slowing me down.
That was fantastic. Thanks immensely! I just saw the video of Tommy Shaw with the Youth Orchestra behind him and just had to know how to play this song. Made my day!
What an excellent Lesson, You Sir are a true --- MAH --- IS --- TRO. I tip my hat to you Sir. Keep them coming...Talk to us about that gorgeous Guitar....Cheers....
+Amado Navas thanks for the very kind post and taking your time to check this out! The guitar is a Collings AT16..all the best wth your music, your friend, dale.
Thank you, thank you!! This song is a blast to play! End of chorus, (woah, woah...part) - I keep my middle finger down when traversing down the neck. Cuts it from 3 to 2 movements: go down neck and pinky up or down. 1 fewer brain synapse used.
Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated! beautiful guitar agree - I know longer have it just wasn't 'my thing' but I could just look at it!
very cool older one hard to believe this one's almost 10 years old now..you still have that cool Collings up there in one of those cases you got with all your guitars? to me that one seems like would be a keeper even if it's not played that often
Great video, sir! Tommy posted video of himself playing part of this from his home last week. I couldn't find a good transcription. Your video is just what the "Dr" ordered. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Started playing again after a long time. My son comes in and sees me playing along with you and asks " How did you guys learn how to play these songs before UA-cam?" Good question. I have learned so much in the last 6weeks. Thank you to the doctor of tones...
Dude, I stumbled upon this and you made it so easy. Thank you so much. I've always loved this song, and now I know how to play it. Can't wait to impress some folks. lol
when I need fast ideas to a song I have to play out live , I check with you first, I don't need alot of Bull____ you get right to the point, Thank You !
Hi tonedr, your videos are awesome. I was hoping you could post how your strumming the beginning progression in this video lesson. I can't get that down for some reason from watching, nor can I find it anywhere. Rock on.
michael j hello Michael...sure appreciate you checking this out and thanks for the very kind post. Strumming is a hard thing to teach for me - my best advice is try to 'feel' the grove or beat of the song and start with strumming to that and try to feel the pulse and what seems to fit. Honestly i never think of a 'pattern' like so many great folks ask for but rather think in terms of feel. We could always SKYPE and talk about this in more detail. your friend, dale
Thanks for the advice Dale. Skype would be great if you have the time. I'm fairly inexperienced and could use any tips I can get, especially regarding strumming.
Oh man, dat axe!! is to die for, it sounds awesome and you do a nice job on this song, I haven't tried it but I am sure I can do it just wish I could sing it
By far the best video of this song I have found, Could you possibly show Tommy's intro like when he and Jack Blades do this song acoustically? Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the most complete chord progression tutorial for this song that I could find. Your pace is a bit fast, but hey, that's what rewind is for. cheers.
I think this will clear up the song for people that can play anything. For beginners and intermediate players, it is quite hard to follow. The speed of which he goes though the chords,(not the tempo of the song) makes it very hard to play along and make to chord shape on my guitar with my hand. I have to continuously pauses and rewind to write down the chords. Please of future videos please remember that some people that are as fortunate to play as well as you do are trying to learn. Apart from that great video. Is there any chance you can respond with a list of the chords you played in order of the song? Thank you.
tonedr What might work as a solution is an accompaniment graphic of the chord when you first land each new one in the video (but that is time consuming as hell). That should cover it, and frankly, I watch your videos precisely because you aren't a rookie teaching in the Mel Bay-vision of UA-cam. There is plenty of hackery out there...let's be real. I think you are a great player and smooth as silk on chord changes and you show two and often as many as 4 alternative chord shapes to capture certain voicing or tones produced from certain guitars that might be able to add color to these. I don't get it ToneDr. - you were plenty slow for that lesson, as it's not a song a rooking would likely be trying to play anyway since it has more than 3 chords already! :P
hello Gerald...greatly appreciate you checking this out and thanks for your post - good thoughts and i appreciate the kind words! I'm sorry i cannot provide a list of the chords - i wish you all the best with your music! dale
tonedr I didn't write any chords down but I did rewind. Stuck with it for about an hour and I got it. Now just polishing it up along with Styx. I thought the lesson was as good as it gets. Just takes the dreaded "P" word. Clearly this lesson isn't for every player yet. They'll get it if they practice and stay with it.

Slow it down in the Settings -> Playback Speed. I did that to get the strum pattern of the verses. You can go as slow as 1/4 speed.
