Something not a lot of people know...when Def Leppard were playing working men's clubs around Sheffield - when Pete Willis was still the second guitarist, and long before they got their first recording contract - Miss America was what Steve Clark used to play during every soundcheck.
Interesting little factoid there, thanks!
In 5 minutes you had me . Learned 90% wow thanx
Holy moly !
I thought I was the only one that liked playing this song !
Man, your channel rocks ! Awesome !!!
Haha, I like playing good guitar riffs, and this is a great one by any standard.
This is the riff that got me into rock n roll! 🎸🎶😎
As a youngster I got a radio for Xmas, was tuning through the stations, heard this, and was hooked.
This riff is one of James young's masterpieces.. Awesome song. When they mixed this recording there was so much stuff goin on.. unreal.
MR ANDERSON. YOU ARE A MATRIX SENSEI. THANK YOU.
Great riff! Brings back to my younger days.
Wow, there's a song I haven't heard in ages. I absolutely loved the whole Grand Illusion album. Thanks Kelly.
First album I purchased with my own money. This video is perfect. Right to the point and easy to follow. I know what I'll be doing tonight. Thanks!
1 of the 1st licks i learn ,KILLER TUNE
This dude can play that guitar! I thought the last part of the riff was a hammer -on, picking it makes sense.
cool. Lots of techniques I can learn and practice with this one. Styx had some great licks and riffs.
Awesome lesson! 🎸🎸🎶🎼🎵
Great song and tutorial! I saw Styx on the Grand Illusion tour. Just saw them last year and they still put on a ln excellent show. Keyboardist Lawerence Gowan was a treat to see too. What a showman and worthy successor of Dennis DeYoung. Thanks for sharing!
Great stuff KDA…yrs ago our drummer was a huge Styx fan, so I had to learn this one and renegade, crystal ball, Lorelei, blue collar…I’m sure I played most of them wrong 🤣
Cool my fav styx song, trouble me longtime. Slowed down half speed, 5 minutes I had iy
My first 2 concerts were Grand Illusion and next the Pieces of Eight in Seattle. This riff might be my favorite of James’ songs.
Just discovered your channel a couple days back. Watched the Rocks tutorial, which was my first ever Aerosmith album, and (when I’m listening to it) favorite of the 5 great ones.
As I watched I thought’this guy HAS to have an episode where he shows Rock Bottom (UFO) since that’s one of that eras MUST KNOW guitar riffs.
But no, I was not rewarded.
This video, you made the point that said it all: greatest riffs, but not the most popular ones😢
A friend showed it to me decades ago, but I can’t quite get it right. I’m a terrible player, so I learned to cook to impress chicks instead. 😂
Thanks for this one, it reminds me that Styx was a great band, but doesn’t have the same caliber of name recognition some of its lesser peers.
I guess after Paradise Theatre it was determined they were (mr. roboto (unworthy of caps) always comes to mind)
Stranded in the same parentheses of side notes along with REO and Hatchet and 38 Special.
Now this is a very recognizable and great Riff ! Definitely worth having in my arsenal of riffs. Thank you Kelly. I love the short guitar riff lessons.👍👍
Cool tune, thanks Kelly
Cool tune from a great album, saw JY and the guys do that one live in the Winter of '77 during their Grand Illusion tour, incredible show.
I always credit Tommy Shaw with the lick, and he does it one position up on the a and d strings. That’s the way I learned it, but I do like your positioning. Great lick by a great band, also great are Madame Blue and too much time on my hands.
All I know is that it was a James Young written song, so I just assumed the riff was his. As far as position, I learn everything by ear and try my best to find the most economical place on the fretboard to play it. Not always going to be correct however.
Love it!
Love these shorts...you just get right to work👍
Your tone was excellent 👏
Holy shit that rocks ❤ nice job why haven’t I heard this song before?
All right, you got me. I've been watching you for a couple of weeks and it just gets better. Hit that subscribe button!
Thanks man!
Very COOLL!!!
Nice choice!
Good stuff
Just started eatching you im pretty new to guitar, i think you play very good
This is an excellent song!Should’ve had a greater amount of air play back in that day, never hear Miss America on any classic rock formatted satellite or radio station/channel.
Super cool riff! I haven't seen a lot of Styx videos by the big guitar influencers though.
Thanks mate! However your not including me in that "big guitar influencer group" are you? Haha. Someday maybe.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar you may not be there in views yet, but after watching guitar videos for years, I can honestly say I like yours the best. I've learned more applicable skills watching your videos. You're an excellent teacher and it doesn't hurt that we have similar taste in music. Please keep it up
Great lesson!
Just saw styxs Saturday night,
Great show! (Fourth row from the stage 👍)
Tried learning this song a few years back, guy doing the tutorial was all over the fretboard. I noticed the other night jy and Tommy we're keeping it very compact.
I'm curious, how did you learn the song? nicely done 💯
Awesome riff! Just learned it thanks!
I haven’t searched yet but do you know Hey Operator by Coney?
🎼🎵🎶👍
