    To be brutally honest, if you really want to be appointed by USAFA, identify the congressional districts that don't have a single applicant to USAFA and move there. As long as you meet the minimum requirements set by the academy, you will gain a congressional nomination and therefore gain an appointment assuming you don't have any medical disqualifications. From what I know, there are approximately 30 districts nationwide that don't have anyone applying to the service academies. By law if one of those states have ANY applicant in a given year, USAFA needs to accept them since every district in the nation gets at least one slot per year. Usually Colorado Springs and Virginia/DC area are extremely competitive for USAFA, due to the academy's location in the Springs and high military brat population in Virginia/DC. Those districts oftentimes get additional slots that were not used by 'non-competitive' districts that don't have any applicant.

    • @academyendeavors
      @academyendeavors  7 місяців тому +2

      The congressional district system isn't perfectly equitable, and some districts are much more competitive than others. Moving to a different district isn't sometimes feasible for many families and includes a considerable amount of risk (some have other kids, or, what if your child's college preferences change after moving?). However, Title 10 federal law mandates that an Academy must offer at least one appointment per eligible district. In 2022-2023 for USNA, for example, all but 5 districts in the US had a qualified applicant. (Source: Institutional Effectiveness Assessment Report, USNA). It's not straightforward which districts those are and they can vary from year to year.

    I had a counselor in high school (1970s) suggest to me that I should apply to the USAFA, after I told him I was enlisting in the Air Force. First time in my life I laughed at an adult. I am in MCJROTC, Varsity swim, and I will be in NHS and Spanish Honor Society, so I have leadership opportunities in all of those, but also I am hoping to obtain a management position at my job. Would that be considered a leadership position?

    you said that an appointment has to be given out to each district. If I theoretically won my district, would USAFA’s application portal state that I have won my district? Or would it just remain the same as the others but will be notified later on that I have received an appointment? Moreover, is this basically called principal nomination or is it different

      Great question, and it significantly depends on the district you reside in, what school you go to and how quickly you can get onto varsity and obtain leadership roles on campus. Regardless, even if you don't succeed, it won't be a waste, because doing so will boost your competitiveness for other colleges and ROTC as well!

    Is the application process different for college transfer students?

    • @academyendeavors
      @academyendeavors  6 місяців тому

      For college students, it's essentially the same process. A few differences are as follows: they will ask for your college transcripts; you can also ask your college professors for a recommendation, as well as your ROTC commander if you are in ROTC; most likely you won't receive a LOA in the fall because your first semester college transcripts won't be finalized until much later, so you're notification window will most likely be in the spring (Mar/Apr). You still need to apply for a nomination, do the CFA, pass DODMERB, etc.

    Is not taking honors or AP classes counted against you if they are not offered at your school in that subject?

    • @academyendeavors
      @academyendeavors  9 місяців тому

      Great question. Two points here. First, Your guidance counselor should submit your transcript and school profile to the Academies when you apply, and within those documents, it should be clear what is offered at your school so the Academies can determine if you are challenging yourself. We recommend talking with your guidance counselor about that before applying. Second, recommend looking into Dual Enrollment (DE) options at your local community college or online colleges. Academies view DE credits similarly to AP or Honors.

    • @academyendeavors
      @academyendeavors  7 місяців тому

      A GPA alone is not enough information to assess competitiveness. The transcript has 4 critical components beyond merely GPA.
      1) your performance compared to your peers (class rank), 2) the competitiveness of your high school, 3) the difficulty of your classes (AP/Hon/IB/DE), and 4) your performance in specific classes (Calc, PreCalc, Chem, Phys, Bio).
