    Good observations on the 10 Spd Auto. vs. the 6 Spd. Manual. Thanks. I am looking at the 2018 Mustang and have driven both the Auto & 6 Spd. I own a 2013 V6 with the 6 spd. and a bunch of owner-installed upgrades. Historically I am a manual trans guy. So a few comments.1. Typically 8 or 10 spd. auto. transmissions fit well with small displacement high performance engines due to the need to keep these engines running tight within their generally narrow power band. A good example is the new Alfa Giulia with a 2.0 L turbo-charged engine. The Alfa's ZF 8 spd. works great with this little engine such that even with that small bore powerplant, the Alfa is a flyer. The new 5.0 L V8 in the 2018 Mustang is not a narrow power band engine. This engine is uber-torquey and pulls well from about 2000 RPM right up to the redline. Woo Hoo! For this reason, many gears are really not required to get solid performance out of it. You will say, yes, but the 10 spd. beats the 6 spd. on the drag strip. True. But that's because the 10 spd. shifts more quickly than most of us can shift a 6 spd. And, let's face it, the drag strip is simply not where most of us drive our cars.2. The 10 spd. can be slightly more fuel friendly than the 6 spd. because in routine driving it gets you into the 9th or 10th gear really quickly. Probably far more quickly that you or I would get a 6 spd. into 6th gear. To be honest, this is annoying to me. I am driving a performance car. I don't want it to get itself into 10th gear within moments after leaving a stop light under light throttle. I would prefer to have those revs available during my acceleration away from the light by keeping the 6 spd in 2nd or 3rd much longer. Sounds nicer as well. Now maybe running the 10 spd. in Sport Mode improves this. But the Sport Mode shifts I find to be annoyingly firm. Jerky, if you will. Not very refined. Or I could use the paddle shifters, right?. But if I have to use the paddle shifters, I am basically back in manual mode. So why have the automatic? Remember the 10 spd. adds $1595 to the sticker price.
    3. I like being able to shift the gearbox into a lower gear when entering a corner. I have perfected this technique which includes double-clutching and smooth rev-matching. This is a skill that an experienced driver should develop. The 10 spd. totally takes this fun little clutch and throttle maneuver completely away. A bit dull, IMHO.
    4. How long will you own your 2018 Mustang? I'd like to keep mine for ten years. So which transmission do you suppose will be more durable over the long haul? IMHO, the technically simpler 6 spd. manual will prove to be more durable. And cheaper to fix if it should break. Repairing a broken 10 spd. auto. beyond the warranty period could cost a ton.Well, folks, that's my summary. You may still prefer the 10 spd. auto., and that's fine. The car actually will be great with either gearbox. Be blessed, y'all.

      Actually the 10-Speed costs an additional $2000 dollars for the drive mode selector on top of the $1595 option if you want to get the most out of it in non premium GTs.

      I agree with most of what you said but there is one thing i disagree with...the fact you said its the speed in which it shifts that makes it faster vs a well driven manual (well driven is the key word here). That has a small part to do with it...its mostly due to gearing. No the 5.0 dont have a narrow power band but it does make most of its go fast power in the upper rpm band where the huge gearing advantage the 10 speed has will really help it to be faster. I beleive if someone geared the 2018 manual better and threw 456 gears in it to make it closer overall to what the old mt82 trans ratios combined w 373 was like 11-17. The old 331 cars were geared better for this engine than the current 373 cars...the new trans and clutch is better outside of shitty shift forks but the gear ratios are much longer so 373 isnt even close to optimal for drag and that is a big part of why the 10 speed has a significant advantage et wise stock for stock. It has so many gears it constantly stays in the upper rpm band and it has a huge advantage over the manual as far as average power during a quarter mile race. If you look at average power on the manual for 18 up and compare it to even a 3.15 geared 10 speed the 10 speed has way more average power because of the gearing due to having so many gears and on a high revving coyote engine thats a big deal. People dont even come close to realizing how much of an advantage this is. That is 85% why its faster...not because of having "faster shifts" that is a small factor comparitively

    I have a 15gt performance pkg manual and I have never complained about the transmission. I also came from a miata which had a great gear box. My new18 gt wil be performance pkg, magneride, 10speed, digital dash, active exhaust. Its due in 3/5 cant wait. Will be my first auto sports car ever and im 42. Maybe getting lazy in my old age but thought the specs on the new 10speed were impressive enough to give it a try. Im also really loomimg forward to finally having auto start to.

    I have a 2016 GT with the PP and manual. I couldn't agree with you more. I don't go drag racing, nor do I do a lot of street racing, so the straight-line acceleration advantages of the new 10-speed really isn't that important to me. I have owned 3 Miatas, including the 2011 PRHT I traded in to get the Mustang, and 2 Honda S2000s. I loved the manuals on both those cars, but would prefer my GT over them, primarily because handling 400 lbs of torque is a lot trickier than handling 140 or 170. The GT manual has a precise feel, light and positive clutch engagement and, combined with the fabulous acceleration and sound (Borla Touring exhaust), clearly is a more visceral and engaging experience than those 2 icons of manual delight.

    Have you found the gearing to be too tall in the non-PP? I've heard some people say the 18s don't feel as fast in the lower rpms with the new taller gearing and 3.55s in the non-PP. Happy to see you back man!

      Hey, Matt!
      From what I have read they have tuned this engine,, specifically with the new intake, to utilize a little more torque in the low rpm’s. So, to me, it doesn’t really seem any different down low with my 3.55s; but it’s a good bit more powerful at the top. I also really love that 7500 RPM redline!

    I want to use my new GT as a daily driver. I drive a lot when I'm tired at 5am and need my coffee, etc. I also get stuck in traffic on occasion. My first thought was to get the 10sp Automatic, and it is nice and convenient, also very fast off the line.
    However, I drove the Manual, and it really is as you say. They have really refined the 6spd Manual. The clutch is much better, the short throw is like butter 2-3-4. I have test driven a few of them now, and they are SOOOOooo FUN to drive in a manual. I honestly don't know what to do.

    • @OffroadNow
      @OffroadNow  6 років тому

      It’s a hard decision, I think... at least for anyone that isn’t forced to drive automatic or too dedicated to manual. The new auto is fast and gives you decent control with the paddle shifters, but that MT-82 manual has been so refined by this point. I love driving it every time I take it out.

    Totally understand where you're coming from. I have a 16 GT and got it with an automatic for the first time. I've owned lots of high performance cars of different makes ( 10th mustang) and I've always gotten a manual trans. I got the auto for the simple fact that I was going to put a twin turbo kit on it, which run much better on automatics. The auto/turbo setup is incredible, but I do miss having complete control over the drivetrain, just like you're describing. If 1/4 mile times aren't the end all/be all for you, I agree with your choice. I was looking for the quickest straight line setup so went auto...

    Good to see you’re back in a ‘stang. Wondering if the 2018’s retain that horrendous clutch assist spring? I dumped mine almost immediately in my 2015, gives the clutch a solid, predictable heft, that does away with the spongy, lightness the spring imparts.

    The new gt stick has the old optional 3.55's rear. It is quicker than the old base cars 3.31s in the stick. It's a nice trade off between the 3.73's and 3.31's.

      The 2018 manual has completely diff gearing in the trans itself so the new car with 3.55 is a much longer gear than the old trans with the 3.31s. You would need 4.30-4.56 to be comparable to 3.73 with the old trans. People need to realize this.

    European here, for me the "auto gear" was like a blasphemy on a car like this (and it was for the previous model), until they introduced the 2018 model with the new 10 gears and extremely fast steer paddles.. well, I can't justify the manual gear anymore and I must admit: the auto model is "faster" (where with faster I mean more efficient).
    I'm not talking about the "auto" feature, I still love deciding which gear to use and when... I'm talking about the fastness into shifting gears, you can't beat it.
    If for the 2015 model I would have chosen the manual one... for the 2018 there's really no doubts: auto all the way.
    PS: why they are selling that tiny LCD and analog gauges in the US? The 2018 here has the 6" LCD and only digital gauges.

    • @OffroadNow
      @OffroadNow  6 років тому

      I have no idea why we still have this ridiculous center stack. At least the aftermarket can take care of that. With regards to the digital gauge, I like still having the option of the analog gauges. At least all Mustangs now have the little LCD screen between the gauges with Track Apps and the like (since the 2015 model year).

    Got this same car but it’s my first time time driving a manual. Had the car for 2 days and my mpg sucks(around 13.) Can you send me a video on downshifting from 3-2 and where should I have The rpm. Or maybe you can just respond to me here. Also when do you find it necessary to use 5th and 6th gear. From what I can tell 3rd is for low to high road speeds 50-75 and 4th goes up to 110. When should I be use gears 5-6.

    • @kicksoverthewire3820
      @kicksoverthewire3820 6 років тому +1

      FullBattleRattle 249 hey bro what’s good. You should keep the rpms around 2300 when driving normally. So on the highway you should be in 5th gear minimum even 6th gear but don’t lug the engine and let rpms go under 2000. Then when you want to go fast then you can take your rpms higher. If you’re driving around at high rpms over like 3 or 4 k then you’re just burning unnecessary gas and adding unnecessary wear to your engine. Remember the power is there and always will be. Oh and I just got the 18 gt pp1 but I’m still breaking in the engine I can’t wait until I reach 1 thousand miles

      The ECU is usd to being beat on by demo drives. Plus, the ECU needs to calibrate itself when new and that takes 700-1000 miles on average. Dealer fuel in new performance vehicles is also 87 octane. The Mustangs 460 hp is rated on Michigan 93/94 octane. Deduct 10-12 hp and tq for 91 fuel and another 12 hp and tq for 87 octane.

      You really just gotta learn the car and it’s trans ratios. You’ll know after some seat time what rpm is required in each gear for a downshift. And fuel economy comes with break in and how heavy your foot is honestly. I average 16-17 city and about 25-26 highway if I drive conservatively. But considering I’ve got the active exhaust with an H pipe my fuel economy goes out those quads tips.

    Don't blame you at all. The manual design is proven in this automobile after years of screw ups starting in 2011. Can you name one auto in a passenger car in the last 8 years Ford has built that has been reliable? Not the Focus, Fiesta, way too many early issues with 6f35 in the Fusion leading up to and still with the 2015s onward. Maybe the Taurus?

      Ryan Frizell it learns how hard to shift by you driving habits,drive it hard it will shift harder and hold gears longer, drive it easy and it will "granny" shift and put you in a higher gear quicker for "a better ride". Most newer fords have this "adaptive shift protocol"

      Also the 10 speed has what they call skip shifting most of the time when all 10 gears arnt needed(city driving or in the f150 when not towing) it acts like a normal 5 speed auto 1-3-5-7-10
      When you steep on it or load it down it will step though all the gears,it's basically a 5 speed auto with an "overdrive"on each gear

      Yes Ricardo, it's called a cell phone. It's why we are losing our driving privileges slowly and manufacturers are pushing for autonomus vehicles. People are just ignorant and would rather use their dumb devices than drive. I'd love to pass a national law: If you want to use a phone while driving, when on it hands free or texting, then you don't need a vehicle or a license. You are a danger to society and just showing the rest if the world how stupid you are and a complete wanton disregard for other people's lives. If anyone is pulled over using a phone in any manner 2x in 1 yr, they should lose their license for 1 yr. Folks don't seem to understand, your devices have a built in gos that can not be turned off unless the battery can be removed. That gps unit tracks your speed, direction, date, time, etc. it will be used against you in court. All vehicles built after 2005 also have an automotive version of an air,iners "black box" that records all kinds of data, so if you go race you vehicles on tne street or are in an accident, the information is recorded, sent to police labs and the insurance companies. Freedom does not exist after 2001 folks. Figure it soon.

      I’m curious: have you tuned it? I know those transmissions feel really aggressive with a tune.

    JUST DONT SHIFT TOO HARD, ALUMINUM SHIFT FORKS BREAKING APART. 3 MONTH BACKORDER ON MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS

    Auto is faster but the manual is way more fun to drive..IMO

    I hope you didn’t get the manual for the simple fact that people would bash your video for getting an automatic!

      Not at all. I just can’t let go of the feel of a manual in a performance vehicle. Personal preference... as I said in the video, I see the appeal of the automatic.

    I'm in a mustang group and everytime I turn around somebody is having problems with their manual transmission. SMH Ford makes shitty manual tranny. I have a Volkswagen with 300,000 on the original clutch and tranny.

      ImaRealPotato hard or soft break in ?

    • @AsapBilla
      @AsapBilla 6 років тому

      It was a little bit on the hard side but the one thing I did was line lock. They just told me today that they found a lot of tire shreds under the car and it looks like its been "abused" by the owner .

    Answer: Because you like to be slower.
