i love how much personality this speedrunner has, seeking out their favourite fish to use in a skip that could use any, causing a glitch that does nothing but amuse
I love this about certain speedrunners. It's especially common to see for more exhibition style speedruns too, like GDQ, but some speedrunners are willing to do it in basically every run. One example I know pretty well is SmallAnt doing "XD Skip" in Super Mario Odyssey, which saves zero time and is a bigger risk than the normal way. As far as I know, it doesn't lose time at least

A few more tidbits... 1. Equipping the O₂ tank early not only messes up the death timing, it also actually slows you down as you swim. In a normal playthrough, the trade-off between speed and O₂ is negligible, but speed's the goal here so picking up the tank is saved until after the Seaglide can be built. The Seaglide pulls you at a constant velocity no matter what you are wearing or holding, or what direction you are moving; our speedrunner can equip the O₂ tank without losing speed. This is also why the Any% run doesn't use swimfins, as any bonus to swim speed is negated by the Seaglide's constant velocity. 2. The first time visiting the kelp forest after the coral tube, our speedrunner is already doing some pre-work on the doggo teeth. You mentioned clearing out the bad metal; there's also checking on the presence of good metal, counting the dogs to make sure there are enough there in the first place, and watching to see if they drop teeth during this first visit. 3. You can identify the crates with Seaglide fragments by a scorch mark on top of the crate. 4. A subtle way the death inventory mechanics work in the runner's favor: after cutting a shroom, you're normally given 4 shroom seeds. Our runner would end up with an inventory-clogging number of shroom seeds when flooding the base or hacking deep shrooms, but because he dies instead of simply returning, he is left with only one shroom seed each time (later placed in the time capsule). 5. Casual players can take advantage of the power drain order by building 1-3 solar panels BEFORE building a bioreactor in a base. Power will always drain first from the naturally recharging solar panels before taking any fuel from your bioreactor, making constant-drain items like lights and water filters consume less fuel. 6. Fish skip can be done with any fish, but there is something about hotkeys and the way your inventory is alphabetized that can make it desirable to do it with certain fish. I understand that bladderfish are undesirable. 7. Resources in multiple buckets (i.e. gold in both the sandstone and shale buckets) drain from BOTH buckets when harvested. Sandstone's 8-count cycle is broken when the first gold is taken from a shale.

Hearing that little reminder that no feeling is final reminds me how and why I come back to this channel. Along with this channels amazing commentary it's refreshing to feel cared about as a viewer on such a personal level.
As I first time viewer, hearing that little reminder that everything will be okay was such a neat addition to this video. It’s the little things such as that which really can help people see out the day. Remember you’re not alone and it’s never weak to speak. Awesome video
@@theFishy_ I don't think so, ifanyth8ng it just reminds them of what they're going through. I watched this video to see how this dude beat subnautica in 30 minutes, not for a huge reminder that life can be a pain in the rear end sometimes
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your little notes about self importance in every video. I just lost a close friend last week to self destruction and I can't help but wish he watched these videos and heard that message. Keep up the good work and have fun anus. And to those viewers that may read this comment, He is correct. Those feelings are temporary and there is a tomorrow and you will be here for it. RIP my dear friend Kristopher.
“Those feelings are temporary.” Bitch, you don’t know everyone on this earth, stop fucking lying. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and that applies to you too
You forgot to mention the bit about the Q.E.P. being glitched to think you're still underwater. The whole facility is supposed to be explored on foot and with no oxygen constraints.
Hey, just wanted to say thank you for always mentioning mental health awareness in each of your videos. Please don’t ever stop. I sometimes go through very rough periods and absolutely love hearing what you have to say. I had a terribly difficult spell several months ago and I just accidentally found a speed run of demon souls. Not knowing what to expect, I loved the style of commentary you provided. Then suddenly you’re talking directly to me and telling me the words I desperately needed to hear. Thank you mr anus aka small mushroom big bush
im going through my own really tough time right now, and I agree, it helps so much to know that one of my favorite creators is rooting for me. tomatoanus is such a lad
the fact that this runner had so much personality and humor along with tomatoanus' commentary and humor really made this video so got damn good to watch. like a GDQ without the live audience so now i feel a little more lonely. great video! great run! :D
Speedruns of this game are great for the same reasons speedruns of old games are great. It's a great game that can be broken mercilessly for our benefit in the most spectacular ways. From simple clipping to leviathan power poses. And the PDA being usable in weird positions, which is perfect.
Little late, but that bit at 22:00 about mental health hit home for me. Currently going through a rough patch and those words mean so sometime in my shoes right now. Youre amazing :).
I really appreciate the early spoiler warning, particularly visual spoiler warning, even though the game is like 5 years old now. Subnautica is a wonderful game but "wonder" is a huge part of that, and if someone is planning to play it they need to go in as blind as possible to get the most out of it. Seeing biomes before discovering them yourself can really damper the amazement when the player finally does so.
Genuinely, it was such a nice touch I was surprised it was included anyways. I think people sometimes think that age means at a certain point the spoiler warning doesn't matter, but it does, especially in games like these. It's a really good spoiler warning too- if you've played the game, the stuff presented makes sense. If you haven't, its nonsense. And thats a really great way of going about it imo.
I wasn’t aware that people who cared about spoilers even watched speedruns. It seems like common sense that a speedrun will more than likely contain spoilers in it
@@lt_johnmcclane That's fair, though I approach them in a different way. I've watched speedruns for games I haven't played but intend to, yet I expect only "minor" spoilers. These tend to be a bit old and I've already been spoiled, but a) any% speedruns require skipping entire, huge chunks of the game; b) my memory isn't amazing and I sorta zone out at the end as I'm mostly interested in the tech/glitches used. (Endgame also tends to be plowed through, with the run completed once the player loses control, so final cutscene revelations typically aren't included in these sort of things.) There are entire biomes this speedrun/video skips, so someone watching this wouldn't be _super_ spoiled, but the spoiler warning is more important in this case because "visual discovery" is part of what made Subnautica so enjoyable: Even if a new area is impressive or different in, say, Skyrim or Fallout, it still sticks to an overall art design. Subnautica does not do this, each biome type is extremely different from the others.
I remember back in 2020, it was quite the pain to play on console, my only port available. But now after a few patches, I rarely get any glitches minus the occasional lag spike and waiting for things to load in, like in the mushroom forest
Hey man, I love your vid's. It's been a hard time for me and you wouldn't believe how much your videos help. I look forward to hearing your positive message somewhere in the middle. Cheers, keep being awesome.
I've seen this run before but hadn't seen an explanation of all the glitches and game mechanics. You did a great job explaining it all and also cured my depression at 22 minutes, so well done!
21:58 broke me. Been having a rough time recently. Only had this vid on as a distraction. Had to reply to make sure I didn’t imagine it. Gained a life subscriber ❤
That random but genuine little check in was unbelievable. This is my first video but I'm already subscribed just for that and I plan to continue watching videos on your channel. Thank you.
I've played a bunch of Subnautica (multiple playthroughs), but damn I had no idea that's how the resource nodes worked. This video was fascinating. And yeah, was aware of the community naming each leviathan, so I didn't flinch at "Casper" and "Kevin" until you pointed it out. XD
I'm listening to this simply to keep something playing in the background because my home is so quiet after losing someone I loved. That bit at 21:00. It stopped me in my tracks. I didn't come here for it, but I needed to hear that.
I ended up crying a bit when you were talking about dread and despair as I've been feeling that way for years and near the edge of that several times. After having to pause/cry I finally decided to get help and now I have an appointment with a therapist next week. Thank you.
Tomato thanks for the kind words you put into each video. I've been watching your speed run explanation videos for over a year now and in that past year things happened that were life changing in both very good and very bad ways. Those little words don't do much on their own but it does remind everyone that we are all human and that helps.
I think more than anything watching this run breakdown makes me want to finally pick up Subnautica. Even with the spoilers, I just wanna try the gameplay out
It’s well worth it, I have absolutely 0 patience to play a story game more than once and I’ve played subnautica 3 times, the only game I’ve played more than once.
yeah I can really recommend it! I feel like it has a good balance kind of? the grindyness is not too bad for example. and the neon fish are just super pretty. sometimes I just love sitting in my all glass bedroom I built and watch the ocean lol!
Do yourself a favor and don't look stuff up! The saddest thing about the game is you can only discover everything once, and there's a TON of stuff not shown in the video.
the thing I didn't know I needed- kind words for mental health in a random speedrun video- thank you, I don't know why you do this but well that helps feeling better.
I wanted to compliment you. Great explanatory, great speed, great detail. But the "hope you are doing well"-segment hit me hard and unexpected. Thanks man. You don't know me, but you made someone's day a lot better. 👍
I haven’t finished the video yet but I’m so glad I found this it’s incredibly interesting and very pleasant to watch! Also I’m so incredibly grateful there’s cc its rare to find long video essays with captions
Thanks for explaining everything! I literally watched Eclipse's run last morning and since I don't know much about Subnautica glitches, I was very confused about his insane Seaglide speed and the remote access to the Lifepod's locker 😅
I’ve been in the Subnautica speedrun community for a couple years now, was once a runner but I mostly spectate now. I just wanted to shout out Eclypsed a little more. When I started, the world record was around 34 minutes and pretty stagnant. Slowly, new strats were found that took off a bit here and there, but when Eclypsed came in, the world record was somewhere in the 32’s. I personally hypothesized that the run could be brought down only to around 31:30. Eclypsed came out of nowhere, absolutely destroyed every perception we had about what the run could be, and currently holds the wr by almost A MINUTE AND A HALF over 2nd place. Absolutely unit. Edit!: there’s also a great idea for “speedcucked” in this game. The cure animation takes absolutely forever, and dispite everyone looking for a way, we can’t find a way to skip the cure that saves time.
ive come back to this video many times, mostly because i speedrun ultrakill and i love watching other games runs aswell i always smile at the little mental health check up tomatoanus says as its been a rough year for me with a lot of physical illness, which in turn brings down my mental health a lot, these videos always remind me that things arent all bad and i will get through these times thank you tomatoanus for being awesome :D
Wow - there are a lot of interesting things that go into this run. I have played this game too death (and 100%) and I thought the explanations were excellent. I really enjoyed the 'buckets' analogy. It really drove home how much is going on cerebrally. I also didn't know about 'bad salvage' - so interesting! Very well done.
I just found you and i already love your videos. Explains everything clearly, a lot of spoilerwarnings, memes and jokes (and even meta ones, man i love that), with a clear voice at a really comfortable speed. And then you just support mental positivity in the middle of the video. You said in your deathloop video that it may be a meme on your channel at this point, but i kind of needed that today. Thanks, please keep making amazing videos.
I’m gonna be so honest, I was just scrolling through my recommended stuff when I stopped to look at this video for like 2 seconds and I just heard “Hello my name is tomatoanus” and I’ve never been more instantly intrigued in my life
This is not only a very entertaining video, but an amazing resource for learning how to speedrun Subnautica! Thank you for the clear and skillfully timed commentary, and the cute and informative graphics and animations

I clicked on this video just out of speedrun curiosity and an interest in the mechanics, but I’m absolutely in love with your sprinkled in jokes and fun comments throughout
21:46 - My God dude you don't know how bad I needed to hear that. Times are seriously fucked for me right now and I honestly don't know if I'm just entering a new life turn or losing everything. Not sure why I decided to watch this video today, I’ve beaten the game ages ago, I know how the runs are done, I’ve never seen or been recommended your videos. But today, I needed the message you put in @21:50 . Thanks
for the first time since i've started watching your content, my life has been going up and i'm happy but despite this, this emotional cut in hit the hardest of all knowing how much your speeches helped me keep my head up when i felt like there wasnt a light at the end of the tunnel. incredible video on a super cool game and speedrun, thank you for the amazing content as always
Just wanted to say thank you, I have not been doing well at all for the past few months and just having a stranger tell me what I already know has helped more than you could know. Usally youtubers mentioning something liked that will be followed by a better help sponsership but you didn't. you ddin't take advantage of my mental health for money and views and also you were just so kind and I want to say thatthis has helped me more than you know

I remember back when the terrain modifier was in the game. I couldn’t figure out how to get the the deeper areas at first, so I dug my way there lol. That’s why they took it out
You're not gonna believe me, but these words at 21:46 actually helped me. I never thought that these things really help anyone, but I was wrong. I was watching random videos just to stop thinking about everything bad that is happening in my life recently and to escape my bad feelings. And this few sentences in the video were actually more helpfull then everything that my friends were able to say to me. I am really thankfull for your words, it was unexpected and therefore more influential for me.
I slept on this game for years, thought it was another unfinished survival game for children, like Ark or something. Boy was I wrong. Played it for the first time last year and had one of the most transcendent video game experiences of my life. What a beautiful game.
My greatest memory of this game is trying to go to the floating island and my dyspraxic ass mistaking north west for north east (or vice versa) and ending up going TOO FAR. Anyone who has played it knows, but I just slammed escape and had a breakdown before reloading. This game is the scariest game I have ever played
I know u will probably never see this but i just want to say thank u . You made feel better in one of the most stressfull parts of my life and listening to someone saying everythink is going to be okey really helped me . I will never forget it
That Mental Health PSA you made at around 22 mins hit me pretty hard. I was genuinely contemplating some pretty bad stuff just before and hearing that out of nowhere made me tear up, even as im writing this now still. Some people might not appreciate those things you say, but you made a difference for me today, and I just wanted to say thank you. Youre a good bean.
Hey dog, I want you to know that I know how you feel, I've been there. The thing that helped me the most was being able to talk about it, seek help if you must. I ended up getting professional help, which is literally a building full of people who's jobs, education and careers revolve around helping people like you and me, so don't ever think no one understands how you feel or that no one can help you. That was two years ago, when I got lost. The treatment worked, meds worked, hardest thing about it was reaching out to someone, if you feel you must please reach out to someone who cares about you. Help is the only step forward after you're unable to deal with it yourself. I believe in you, everyone that knows you does.
Man, I just wanna say that I really appreciate the little call out you give about 22 minutes in. The mental health check basically. Thank you for that. It's a nice little gesture and yeah, things been a little rough lately. I kind of needed to hear that. Thank you dude.

@@Turt3752 At this point with a decent CPU it runs fine although the pop in has never been fixed, you can easily run this over 100 FPS with no stutering on a 5800x and any recent GPU but on older ryzen CPU's in particular it doesnt run great still.

At like 22 minutes In when he was asking how we were doing it made me feel better. I had a pretty terrible day today so I really needed to hear it. Thanks man.
21:58 damn that got wholesome and thanks tomato I've been having bad thoughts recently and that actually kinda helped
That was totally out of left field but I really needed to hear that. Thanks for time stamping that.
@@Waytigo no problem friend
I didn't know I needed that message until he said it. It means a lot to me, and thank you!
I feel like Im living in a simulation. I was not feeling good at all either and you're right, completely out of left field
No, they are really annoying.
21:50 damn I really cried after hearing all that. Thank you for those kind words. You’re truly the best.
This feels like a training video for what to do if I ever get stuck on a water alien planet and need to escape as quickly as possible.
Ah yes build some shit that literally destroys other shit completely negating the laws of physics where matter cant be created/destroyed... and also using a tool to clip through reality just to get a buried alien tablet

No
If you manage to clip into terrain, its not you thats stuck on the planet, its the planet thats stuck with you. And it should be afraid, very afraid
Same! Took it from a 9/10 to a 10/10 in my book. :)
He says it every video, it's really annoying
@@BiggerR10 well, someone might need it
@@BiggerR10 how miserable do you have to be to comment this multiple times. No one cares if you find it annoying. Dont watch his videos
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and that applies to you too
My condolences for your loss
Hope you're doing well, wherever you may be, and my sincerest condolences for the loss of your good friend.
Wish you the best!🤗
I hope things have gotten better with time ❤
You forgot to mention the bit about the Q.E.P. being glitched to think you're still underwater. The whole facility is supposed to be explored on foot and with no oxygen constraints.
21:51 it's almost creepy how this came completely out of left field while i was in a really dark moment right now... That helped a lot
Same here bro. You’re not alone. 👊
@@TehUltimateSnake thanks man, nobody should have to go through stuff alone, so thanks man
yeah, it was a sudden bought of wholesomeness, and while I haven't had mental health issues it was still awesome to hear!
I actually started crying
the fact that this runner had so much personality and humor along with tomatoanus' commentary and humor really made this video so got damn good to watch. like a GDQ without the live audience so now i feel a little more lonely.
great video! great run!
And thats a really great way of going about it imo.
the most huge thing in this game is sound design and they fired the guy responsible for it
I wasn’t aware that people who cared about spoilers even watched speedruns.
(Endgame also tends to be plowed through, with the run completed once the player loses control, so final cutscene revelations typically aren't included in these sort of things.)
There are entire biomes this speedrun/video skips, so someone watching this wouldn't be _super_ spoiled, but the spoiler warning is more important in this case because "visual discovery" is part of what made Subnautica so enjoyable: Even if a new area is impressive or different in, say, Skyrim or Fallout, it still sticks to an overall art design. Subnautica does not do this, each biome type is extremely different from the others.
once i started to get it down it gave me the same feeling minecraft did the first time i played it. amazing game!!!
Excuse me..? That encouraging message was unexpected and well needed. I feel weirdly offended being hit by it, but thank you
underrated comment
Despite the bugs, subnautica is such a good game. I love how it keeps itself relevant through the years, and I can’t wait for the 3rd game
I remember back in 2020, it was quite the pain to play on console, my only port available. But now after a few patches, I rarely get any glitches minus the occasional lag spike and waiting for things to load in, like in the mushroom forest
@@reallyoriginalname1221 yeah I never played on console, but I know it runs poorly because it’s not well optimized, on top of being a huge game
there aren't bugs there are fish
After recent updates it runs wayyy better than it used to. On pc at least. I just beat the game on hardcore with no bugs.
shame about the second one
19:18
“Getting dogs to drop teeth” is something I’ve never thought I would have heard 💀😭
Gained a life subscriber ❤
that part where you just started encouraging the viewer to carry on and push to tomorrow, was weird. i needed it. thank you.
That random but genuine little check in was unbelievable. This is my first video but I'm already subscribed just for that and I plan to continue watching videos on your channel. Thank you.
This is literally my favourite youtuber ever. the way he just cares about his viewers so much that he starts speaking about his mental health
Thank you.
Dude you made me cry when you had that little speech at 22:10 or so. As someone going through a lot, thank you.
Tomato thanks for the kind words you put into each video.
I've been watching your speed run explanation videos for over a year now and in that past year things happened that were life changing in both very good and very bad ways.
Those little words don't do much on their own but it does remind everyone that we are all human and that helps.
Thank you commentator-person for those kind words at 22:20! You got me and I can feel it in my soul. Best of luck with your channel.
Get it, it's absolutely worth ot
yeah I can really recommend it! I feel like it has a good balance kind of? the grindyness is not too bad for example. and the neon fish are just super pretty. sometimes I just love sitting in my all glass bedroom I built and watch the ocean lol!
its on Xbox game pass for PC and xbox which is how I played it
Do yourself a favor and don't look stuff up!
Your scripts and editing just keep getting better. Love this run and love the video!
5 seconds in and "Churro Pequeño" already got me good, lmfao🤣
ive come back to this video many times, mostly because i speedrun ultrakill and i love watching other games runs aswell
i always smile at the little mental health check up tomatoanus says as its been a rough year for me with a lot of physical illness, which in turn brings down my mental health a lot, these videos always remind me that things arent all bad and i will get through these times
thank you tomatoanus for being awesome :D
It's only a matter of time until one day, he tells us to hang ourselves
The transition from the parts of the cyclops image to the crafting image was so good
I’m gonna be so honest, I was just scrolling through my recommended stuff when I stopped to look at this video for like 2 seconds and I just heard “Hello my name is tomatoanus” and I’ve never been more instantly intrigued in my life
I was looking forward to this vid since seeing this speedrun with no explanation. The visual at 19:25 was especially quality
Was gonna subscribe anyway but the wholesome message mid-video ensured that your channel will also live rent-free in my recent searches
This is not only a very entertaining video, but an amazing resource for learning how to speedrun Subnautica! Thank you for the clear and skillfully timed commentary, and the cute and informative graphics and animations
21:48 was so uncalled for that made me like deadass shed a tear. dude ima watch every single one of his videos, he won me over. Thank you.

21:46 - My God dude you don't know how bad I needed to hear that. Times are seriously fucked for me right now and I honestly don't know if I'm just entering a new life turn or losing everything. Thank you, sir. I really mean it. Best to you as well. 🙂♥

Been watching subnautica speedruns for a long time and this is the first time I've seen this particular one, AMAZING!
The small messages you put in these videos have saved my life more than once
for the first time since i've started watching your content, my life has been going up and i'm happy but despite this, this emotional cut in hit the hardest of all knowing how much your speeches helped me keep my head up when i felt like there wasnt a light at the end of the tunnel. incredible video on a super cool game and speedrun, thank you for the amazing content as always

I love the random motivational message in the middle of the speedrun tutorial, its just soo random yet soo relieving.

I am crying right now 22:06. I really needed to hear that. Thank you!
Outlast is far scarier imo
21:58 I needed that, thank you for the motivational message

Thank you for the uplifting message, I really needed that
WOOOO MORE TOMATOANUS
